Every time i watch people doing this kind of work they just show in a short time what to remove and it looks easy till you are doing it and realize that is not that easy but you just spend 4 hours trying to remove a nut. Now this is the real thing. I like it, real work thks
Dealt with the 2005 Acura TL Engine replacement few months ago as well. Same engine, auto transmission though, managed to get it out from the top too without taking the stub frame so didn't need to deal much with the rack related stuff. Phew. Great video Eric, you're my inspiration for following my passion and being a mechanic.
so weird, I usually come on and binge watch your stuff. I just got a 08 TL and was thinking I dont think ive seen Eric do Acura stuff before and boom 10 seconds later I see this series.
I just bought a 2006 accord sedan v6 w/ 6 speed manual that hydrolocked and threw a rod. Awaiting engines arrival from lkq and came across this video for the second time. I watched this video when it first came out and never thought I would be watching it again to get a head start on a upcoming Honda acura engine swap. Good job Eric. Keep making videos
I’ve watched this video series a few times at least for entertainment if nothing else. Now I got a free ‘05 TL that needs a new engine. How convenient!
They tried to teach us this way in my automotive technology class, and I was dumbstruck. If I saw somebody beating on MY shit like that, and not using a proper puller.........
Nicely done, Eric! It's great to see a swap with a pro to go through step by step to teach those of us with limited wrench time. And thanks to Brian for the awesome shots!
+EricTheCarGuy I have a question, on an Acura TLX with a DCT if they were to replace the transmission, would the torque converter be part of it? or is that a separate component that wouldn't go also? (their dct includes a torque converter)
+EricTheCarGuy yes but a DCT normally doesn't use a torque converter, Acura added it for smooth low speed and stop and go that was the reason for the question, is it still part of the transmission and would it get replaced together?
The most I've done with a car, is change a battery and a tyre so I don't know if I'm your regular audience but I will say I love your videos especially engine replacement ones. Thanks for suffering through it for us.
I just pull an already partial pulled one from a junk yard.. and after 12 hours of hard knuckle breaking labour..... i dont even have the courage to dare to take out the one in my car and finish the swap...they are truly one of the hardiest swaps ever...
"Go ahead, try and slow me down" Good attitude! Wish it's one I remembered more often because having done a gearbox replacement at home on the floor (cradle out method) on an AWD car recently I definitely let some stuff slow me down! Got it done in the end though. I did wonder to myself what a pro does to keep themselves moving forward though because inevitably stuff comes up that can waste hours.
I pulled apart my tl like half a year ago and just got engine back in and these videos have been helping me figure out where everything goes that I forgot lol
And there are those of us that both applaud and appreciate your efforts to bring the viewers content. Especially when the car you're stuck working on is a complete and total POS! Thanks Eric!
@@Justin_Anvil Until they have been completely molested inside and out through 20 years of being passed around by teenagers as a half assed project car.
Eric. can you please do a video about "basic" tools a starting technician should have? At least enough tools to do everything from a basic oil change to an engine swap.
Hey Eric, I had and 05 Acura TL with the automatic and a guy at my local Acura dealership told me how easy it was to take the motor only out the top. The front motor mount mounts to the engine and transmission so if you just take the bolt out that goes in the trans the motor slips right out while leaving the transmission in the car. In your case I dont think you could clear the clutch since thats a manual. Just a tip for the automatic guys and gals.
I really appreciate the simplicity of classic vehicles.. having a bad memory, it would take forever to do a job like this with so many electrical connections.
you and I have a similar mindset when working, I would rather take an extra few minutes to make sure reassembling goes smoothly and I can't honestly think of much I would've done differently for this job. Great work Eric, and thanks for posting it for us all to enjoy!

I have NO clue how you put all of this shit back together where it was originally and do it in enough time. I would go NUTS putting this back together. Good job man.
Honestly, I did the transmission on my 05 Honda Accord. First time, so i realized real estate is a great have for the first time. I removed everything. Bagged and labeled of nuts and bolts for part/location...everything. Parts housed separately from Fasteners. Took some time but at reassembly had everything which was an added advantage. Perfect! Bags need zip ties so nothing falls out, but other than that was a fantastic. Eric have to disagree with the torquing comment, it does take time, but well worth the effort.
+An Mar Thanks for your input. After tightening fasteners for more than 20 years on vehicles you tend to get a feel for it. Not saying torquing is bad, but for some of us, it can save a lot of time not to.
+EricTheCarGuy Lucky I didn't have any of these issues. Got the car new in 1998. Only problems I had where the door lock actuator failed and ignition switch. Both of which I replaced myself. After 16 years, I may have move to a Honda Odyssey like your new one.

I used to work for a quick lube, they told me not to change the drain plug unless it was necessary. You wouldn't believe how many times I had to change it out cause the drain plug was either stripped (threads or head) from other quick lubes. There was one time someone pulled in and had a spark plug as a drain plug, that was an interesting conversation, their were even a few oil pans we wouldn't touch cause they looked like they were about to disintegrate from a bump.

About to do an engine swap on my 2013 manual 3.7 tl. I think this is the most helpful 4 series video I found, that is close to the same engine type. Fingers crossed, wish me luck lol
Two video suggestions, if these haven't already been done: 1. About the circumstances around any remarkable injuries Eric has sustained in working on cars, especially stupid mistakes we all make. For example, maybe he was checking the inside of a flat tire, with bare hands, and cut himself on the nail that caused the flat. 2. Would love to hear about the memorable mistakes Eric has made, esp. those that he made more than once, like forgetting to put in the engine oil drain plug, and finding out after he added a quart or two of oil! Thanks!
Great video Eric. Looking forward to part 2. This is like what you used to do a couple of years ago but with better camera, lighting and sound. I want more!
It was a fairly new car if you look at the grill...but the Axel arms had a bit of rust and, the aluminum k frame had corrosion... it's not as much I would expect in nw Michigan but, he is a good bit more south than I.

EricTheCarGuy Thanks for the info! its always hard to find good information that is from actual experience. Do the automatic transmissions last? I usually always try to stay stick shift but with TL's, they are extremely hard to find.
+Nicholas C Later model TLs had better transmissions. I'd say 07 and up.
great video Eric! Thanks for posting! I always learn something new when I watch you're videos.
About to do an engine swap on my 2013 manual 3.7 tl. I think this is the most helpful 4 series video I found, that is close to the same engine type. Fingers crossed, wish me luck lol
Looks like you're having as much fun with this car as I have with all the cars I work on at the used car dealership I work at.
Nice cold beer and some car repair videos!
great work between you and your cameraman ! Very good video and entertaining , thanks !
Two video suggestions, if these haven't already been done:
Thanks!
Good job on getting all the right angle/shots Brian!
Great video Eric. Looking forward to part 2. This is like what you used to do a couple of years ago but with better camera, lighting and sound. I want more!
I love that you work in the rust belt and, we get gems like this that truly show the struggle of working on cars. haha
with the mice in place thing all I heard was me simple or more simple for me.
what struggle? I didnt see any rust?
It was a fairly new car if you look at the grill...but the Axel arms had a bit of rust and, the aluminum k frame had corrosion... it's not as much I would expect in nw Michigan but, he is a good bit more south than I.
+drew barbee Yea, it adds a whole new layer of suck to each job.
Love how clean your shop is!
New salvaged engine, new cats, owner loves his Acura. That's my fave body style too.
+LEX Maximaguy87 These were good cars. I've got my eye out for an 07 Type S 6 speed someday.
Thank you for showing all the cool tips and tricks when disassembling the engine. I have a 06 TL that i've had for 9 years; I was just curious on how to take it apart for the fun of it. lol
Eric’s favorite tool.
The plastic clip remover lol.
yes!!!! This is the type of video that brought me here 4 years ago!!! More More More!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+deepsquat600 You'll have this and more with the Fairmont. I'm building that entire car.
One of the best feelings in the world is loosening up a tight bolt.
one of his best videos.
I drive a standard but I never really knew how the shifter worked with in the engine now I see how it works. Thanks for this vid.
“Sometimes it’s better to not look & reach down & just do it.” I relate to this 100 percent hahahaha!!! you’re the man!
