When I bought the timing belt video for the j series not too long ago, I thought there was no way I was going to get a engine replacement video for this car. These videos that we get for free is like getting a fortune's worth of information. I definitely will be donating over on the website soon. You saved me and my wife at least a grand on just what we would have spent on the water pump repair. Thanks yet again Eric.
ERIC!!!!! You are the man! I took over my Dads 1999 Acura 3.2 TL when he passed away October 2nd of 2018 and although I haven’t discovered where the loud knocking was coming from yet (not the timing belt tensioner) or what’s causing it, (It’s loud and on the top end) I’m not giving up till I get it all fixed even if that means dropping a new motor in it . I checked all valve lash and adjusted only if needed, timing was fine, I inspected all intake valves now I’m doing the exhaust valves and if I don’t see anything there I’ll drop the oil pan and check the main bearings. Im still chugging along and my spirits are up because of your videos. I hope I get the car running soon in honor of my father. Keep up the awesome work and very entertaining videos that are EXTREMELY knowledgeable and helpful. I don’t know if a SINGLE person who doesn’t enjoy your videos because they are absolutely incredible and amazing!!! Rodney Ginn
Great video. Oh I guess around the mid point or so when loosening those fasteners with the box wrench. The audio is so clear and the "snap" of the bolt breaking loose...soooooo satisfying.
Those are a bitch to get a tool on and popped loose IN the car. Those are probably some of the reason he decided to pull the whole package. Steel embedded in aluminum, of course no anti-seize used. It takes above average torque to pop them.
I was a hgv mechanic for 40 odd year , and we used fork lifts to haul the engines out and in , am enjoying your videos so much electronics on today's cars and trucks now , i sit here savouring my retirement now watching life go by , don't miss all that rat race one iota , ps stay dirty Eric

the only bad thing about doing this for someone and I've dealt with it NUMEROUS times.. When swapping a motor in a car for someone and you have never heard the motor run and neither has the customer there could be many problems.. there could be a bad injector, intake leak, bad sensors or something major like a bent valve or rod knock.. so after doing all the work of swapping Motors you then have to troubleshoot why the motor isnt running right and then you run back into the problems of having to pull the whole intake back off for a bad injector.. I hate swapping motors for people like this ESPECIALLY on a blind motor you haven't heard running. honestly I wont even waste my time on a engine swap unless the motor is guaranteed to run with paper work. YOU sir are 10x The mechanic I am lol because I wouldn't of touched this job 😂😂
This was me back in 2008 with my GSR - pulling the engine out by myself. It had 270K miles and needed its 3rd timing belt replacement. Plus it also needed a new clutch and flywheel friction plate at the same time. Since both main engine mounts have to come off to do those jobs, I decided to just pull the whole engine out. And while it was out I was able to very easily flip the engine upside down on the stand and do the oil pan gasket, as well as easily drill out one of my header studs on the cylinder head that had broken some years back, but I never could fit a drill in there to fix it. Plus the clutch and flywheel were much easier with the engine and gearbox on the ground, instead of having to bench press the gearbox from underneath the car. Did that once at 135K miles, never again.
+Tureno Levin It makes me hate front wheel drive cars even more , so much crap to take off and change over. Personally I wouldn't have the patience to do this job.
eric you area hell of a man for doing this job. maybe im getting too old or just getting lazy i dont know but it makes me love my older chevys and fords. awesome job though.
I love this stuff. I would never be able to do this myself, within a month or so, but I get to enjoy the work and I have kept my hands clean and my knuckles from bleeding. Thanks, good stuff Eric. I really enjoy your videos.
This was a pleasure to watch as you were the poor bugger doing it, not me. These are exactly the sort of jobs I hate. The only nice bit is getting finished.
Thanks for doing this video. I don't have this car, but now I've got a lot better idea what's going on in the black hole between the engine and firewall on my Odyssey.
So I learned I need to get a nice cordless impact... Took me three weeks to swap motors in my jeep and there was half as many bolts and connectors but it was my first time and the week vacation in the middle of the swap didn't help either haha! Awesome vid Eric!
You are doing someone a huge favor with this job. This is amazing since your time and knowledge are the most valuable things you possess. Subscription earned!
i'm sure the seat belt works for holding up the engine.. but I kept a clenched jaw when you were filming underneath it as well as when you were removing parts off the engine block... with it wobbling and all. Kudos for when you did both at the same time! :D
+NYPATRIOT hell yea service records and everything. I know someone who flew down from NH to North Carolina to get a type s 6 speed. made sure all ducks were in a row and got a decent deal. theyre out there, just gotta find them
chrised1115 oh nice :) well what i meant was i would buy one even if i knew it was beat up a little an i would go through the car myself, pretty much take it part an put it back together to get it all squared away.
Hey Eric, can't say for sure in this case, but usually coolant lines running to the throttle bodies on Hondas/Acuras is for the the fitv or fast idle valve. Lets the car idle up higher on cold starts based on coolant temp.
It's so therapeutic to watch you tear shit apart haha. Being an industrial maintenance tech, working on stamping and forging presses a few years got me interested in working on cars. So instead of breaking other peoples cars I just break my own haha. I needed to change my rotors on my S10, and while doing that I noticed some fluid on my garage floor. So I said "damn" and got to looking. It appears to be transmission fluid, but it's coming from the bell housing (not sure if it's called something else). So that has me nervous, but whatever, I continue with what I was doing. Then, I see coolant... I say "damn" again lol. That was just a cracked tank on the radiator; super easy to fix. But the transmission fluid has me worried coming from the bell housing. I will actually have that looked at by a transmission shop. Again, thanks for the videos!
hello eric. a couple of weeks ago i did a 96 lexus engine swap and to be honest this honda engine seems more simple to work with. the owner bought an engine off a different car same block and heads but everything else needed to be swapped out to the other engine... nightmare!!! took me about a day to just swap parts around like manifolds water passages harness injectors fuel manifolds etc...
working continuously with engine replacement for a very long time tends to upgrade your memory to cope with this kind of tasks.... i call it train your brain the average guy with no to light duty car work isn't the same as an experienced technician who did it countless times for a guy doing it for the first or second time i suggest he/she take alot of photos for the engine bay as they go and arrange the bolts and fasteners near the part that goes with it ps : a proper detailed manual can help alot specially when it comes to torquing critical bolts with a torque wrench
Dude didn't want to pay for a $20 rear seal? Thing is, when you tell people the rear and front seal were done, the clutch etc were done, it actually increases the amount of money they are willing to pay for the car. Just add the $20 to the price of the sale.
+obieezx11 With few exceptions today, you would be shocked by what people say they don't have money for yet see what they spend there "available" money on. These improvements would likely increase the cars selling price and value for very little added expense so it was foolish not to do especially if he referenced a vid done by ETCG to prove it. It's an Acura ffs not a Chrysler.
He should have done a lot with the engine out, then added to cost of the sale. Any person who really knows how to drive a manual transmission will be able to tell that clutch is toast
Wow Eric, this is an old video! You don't even have your new air compressor or any of the fancy machines you have now. Plus shout out to Barbara's van.
Stoked to see this, and once again thanks! you are right, that is an expensive clutch..392.90 from parts geek. mine has made it 163k so far thank god. BTW-Crazy are the people who run around my head too. Just be careful, one of thems got a gun to shoot the other one... and yet together they were friends at school or something.
Hey EricTheCarGuy... just one thing... i have a 03 accord 6-6... my j30a4 blew and i had replaced it with the same one as yours... a j32a3 from a 05 tl automatic. All i did was put two bypass plugs on both outlets for the automatic coolor and its worked fine for me
+cris2man hey. thanks for the reply, I have an 06 6-6 sedan and I had to replace the clutch, I made a makeshift compression tool sort of like the one that the book describes, but ever since the shifter isn't as smooth as it used to be. I'm not sure what's the problem, when the peddle is depressed the clutch does fully disengage , and when released if fully engages.
You should be paid alot more for these jobs, seems like such a pain, but quality viewing! I've been waiting all week, and I like the new intro recap.. Might look into getting myself one of those dewalt impacts, looks like it just makes life a hell of alot easier!
+Ghetto Dynamicz Inc Thanks. I didn't get paid for this job. I just wanted to make a video. The DeWalt is pretty cool. ruclips.net/video/y1NIjrug2LM/видео.html
Watching this I won't complain about the replacement motor and manual conversion in my car which is a 2000 Mitsubishi KJ Verada. All I had to do is pull the flex plate for the fly wheel off the 2005 model motor (6G74), connect the fly wheel and clutch then mount the trans to the motor drop it in plus the main engine harness in are the same to physically run the engine it's just if it has the extra wiring for the auto or not on the side. Then connect 2 wires on the inhibiter switch to trick the auto ECU into thinking it was in neutral then terminate the auto trans plugs (took the plugs off re wrapped in black electrical tape on the main loom to tidy it up. Top all fluids up connect the battery fire it up and all good it fired up first go once it built fuel pressure back up. Was my first engine / manual conversion and it only took me the weekend started Saturday morning pulled it out of the garage Sunday night, I'm happy as the motor hasn't fallen out yet after 15 months and 20,000km.
@35:01 - EHHHHH-HOOOOO! Was the sound of cameradude Brian's VTEC kickin' in! 8-OThings seemed a lot calmer this time, as opposed to Part 1. Good thing.Champin' at the bit; can't wait for Part 3, Eric!
*Quietly walks past Barbara's van.* I see you, Eric. You're not hiding anything. Haha! I imagine this was taped way back then due to the lack of equipment in your shop but I still found it funny!
Great Videos ! been following you since the start. I love the fact that you love the Acura Vigor!! I always wanted one. cheers from up here in Boston land.
When I transport an engine on a car hoist. I lower the engine onto a piece of timber, that straddles the support legs. That way, you don't have dynamic load on the chain. It makes it super-easy to move...
An old seat belt works great for lifting engines. A guy I know works in a salvage yard, they do it all the time. The only time he ever saw the seat belt fail was with a Ford Power Stroke, which is a really big and heavy engine.
+EricTheCarGuy The six speed trans more or less is the same six speed that's in the 8th generation civic si and the input shafts bearing get spun and ruin the trans case. I'm on my second transmission for that very reason.
+EricTheCarGuy It is a nice fwd six speed in that it has a limited slip differential but it's a five thousand dollar fix from honda. Lucky instead of removing it myself and sending it away for rebuild I found a place called besslers that did it for a little over 3 grand and it was a rebuilt trans with a 3 year 50000 mile warranty. honda won't admit to the problem really and just extended the warranty to 100000 but good luck with that.
Wow! That's a whole lot of little detail to always remember when doing an engine swap. When I watch your videos I always try to remember the most that I can, but it's so much details! What did you do in your times of learning to absorb so much information? That would really help. Thanks from Quebec, Can!
Eric, do you have a video explaining how you started your own shop and what steps you took? That'd be awesome to know. Your work environment is very relaxed and it seems like you enjoy working solo.
if people are mad because you do things the easy fast and maby not "after the book" way, i have no idea what they are talking about... i do take care of my cars, but so far ive done a clutch, timing belt, waterpump etc torque specs whats that? ;) just have a look at a pro racing team. you would be supprised over the amount of shortcuts they take. the only thing i feel is kinda important to torque is the rods going straight thru the cylinder, and maby the cam. the rest = meh i wont bother :p Great vid, im just admiering your knowledge on engines. :)
Why do I get the vibes about some aggression surrounding this engine replacement? Somethings not right, making it not so enjoyable to watch, and I look forward to your videos :)
I'm all for the flat-rate torque technique, but i did loose a crankshaft once due to a flywheel bolt issue. I always locktite and torque those every time now.
Hehe, I suddenly feel the pre-MOT (roadworthiness test in the UK) service I'm halfway through on my snotter is a lot easier than some of even the little bits needed on that engine. For me, fuel filter down, air filter, spark plugs and oil filter change, then new backbox, then let the MOT station fix my rear brakes that I bodged a few months back...
I'm not questioning your methods here, because I understand the idea behind them. You've got a customer that wants to pay rock-bottom and cut corners wherever he can, and the car is junky anyways---in this scenario, doing everything "by the book" goes out the window.
The reason they run coolant to the throttle body to increase the engine RPM when cold or when first start and by coolant temperature the ecm will regulate engine speed
sucks that the owner didn't invest in replacing the clutch and everything. These cars with a manual a kinda rare and he could of gotten top dollar for it. Next owner is going to have to dump some money into this car if they plan on keeping it.
The clutch in this is common in European cars. surprised to see it in American petrol models. refered to as a SAC (self adjusting clutch) with a dmf (dual mass flywheel) it dampens and supreme engine vibration and feedback. In this case the dmf was well past its wear tolerance and I imagine at an estimated cost of 500-600 dollars the owner was somewhat reluctant to pay out.
I love your honesty Eric. It's one of the reasons why I keep watching your channel.

When the mighty Eric uses his mighty impact drill, engines that are before him must yield.

This video should be titled "Angry engine swap".
man i miss old Eric. I used to watch you years ago and happened to run across a video and now im freakin addicted again. Thanks Eric!!!
Yeah me to! I first found him like 8 or 9 years ago. I don't think he even had a lift. Just started watching him again.

I'm gonna second what everyone else is saying, you had me laughing at the intro. I'm really enjoying and learing a lot in this series. Thanks dude!

Eric the most entertaining tech on RUclips
Thanks for doing this video. I don't have this car, but now I've got a lot better idea what's going on in the black hole between the engine and firewall on my Odyssey.
Best part of direct engine swaps... tons of back up fasteners.
So I learned I need to get a nice cordless impact... Took me three weeks to swap motors in my jeep and there was half as many bolts and connectors but it was my first time and the week vacation in the middle of the swap didn't help either haha! Awesome vid Eric!
been waiting all week for this!
Man i lost it at that clutch alignment tool collection.Just impressive.
You are doing someone a huge favor with this job. This is amazing since your time and knowledge are the most valuable things you possess. Subscription earned!
PULLIN' A MOTOR ! ! ! Love this series! You da man, Eric.
i'm sure the seat belt works for holding up the engine.. but I kept a clenched jaw when you were filming underneath it as well as when you were removing parts off the engine block... with it wobbling and all. Kudos for when you did both at the same time! :D
I have a description for the ultimate buyer of this car: "Victim."
I am enjoying this series, however.
+Garth Goldberg Hey Garth where the heck ya been!?
+South Main Auto Repair you are speak Arabic ?
South Main Auto Repair I've been watching your Chevy V8 series. It seems like these vehicles are intended to have their engines replaced.
+legioner9 I meant, NOT intended to have their engines replaced.
Eric you have taught me so much I could not thank you enough but I look forward to meeting you one day ! you are an inspiration to me! thanks again !
Thanks for the comment. Perhaps you can make this years 'Meet Up'. www.ericthecarguy.com/etcg-meet-up-2016
It's a shame, a 6spd TL beat up like that
very big shame. they're pretty rare now a days, especially type s 6 speed
chrised1115 yes they are, if i ever get my hands on one i am going to go through it, from top to bottom.

+cris2man Thanks.
The camera man does a good job of not shaking. Or awesome editing.
I've got a set of those long snap on double ring spanners. I have to say they are probably my favourite spanners they are great

Great series very educational maybe I can tackle this replacement if need be. A teardown would of completed this series
thanks eric i have learnt a lot of things of your videos and now a lot of things i can do by myselff
You are The Man! Definitely a very helpful series.
Bless you Camera Man Brian! LOL!
35:00 That sneeze. Hahahaha!
Great Videos ! been following you since the start. I love the fact that you love the Acura Vigor!! I always wanted one. cheers from up here in Boston land.
eric u r the man nevered seen so much clutch alignment thats me though they come handy
When I transport an engine on a car hoist. I lower the engine onto a piece of timber, that straddles the support legs. That way, you don't have dynamic load on the chain. It makes it super-easy to move...
Watching this I can't wait until cataract surgery so I can resume on my '86 Dodge Caravan with Mitsubishi/Mikuni engine.
also I'm dying for more Fairmont builds. I got 98 cobra SuperCharger. and the Fairmont gives me more urge to do more to my car lol. keep them coming!!
+Svt Cobra Don't worry. By the time it's all said and done, I'm sure you'll be sick of Fairmont videos.
about damn time part 2 is posted, thanks
+tim funk Repair videos are posted every Friday. ;)
Cameraman Brian blowing up with a sneeze...... Laughed so hard I had to stop the video!!!!!!
An old seat belt works great for lifting engines. A guy I know works in a salvage yard, they do it all the time. The only time he ever saw the seat belt fail was with a Ford Power Stroke, which is a really big and heavy engine.
Thank you Eric the car guy!
Eric, I love you brother.
+tehpwner32 I love you too.
Eric you are a gentleman good to see people like you with a Good heart👌🏼
I'm listening to Seal (1991) right now because of this video.
Nice.
I did not know that. Thanks for the info.
Wow! That's a whole lot of little detail to always remember when doing an engine swap. When I watch your videos I always try to remember the most that I can, but it's so much details! What did you do in your times of learning to absorb so much information? That would really help. Thanks from Quebec, Can!
damn it eric. we needs more longer.
I saw part 1 last night and today i will finish watching this part, Very Entertained. :)
did you go to school to become a mechanic ?
Eric, do you have a video explaining how you started your own shop and what steps you took? That'd be awesome to know. Your work environment is very relaxed and it seems like you enjoy working solo.
All your videos are enjoyable, thanks for making them.
if people are mad because you do things the easy fast and maby not "after the book" way, i have no idea what they are talking about... i do take care of my cars, but so far ive done a clutch, timing belt, waterpump etc torque specs whats that? ;)
just have a look at a pro racing team. you would be supprised over the amount of shortcuts they take. the only thing i feel is kinda important to torque is the rods going straight thru the cylinder, and maby the cam. the rest = meh i wont bother :p
Great vid, im just admiering your knowledge on engines. :)
GENUS GENUS WORK I LEARN TO MUCH THANKS
Why do I get the vibes about some aggression surrounding this engine replacement? Somethings not right, making it not so enjoyable to watch, and I look forward to your videos :)
I'm all for the flat-rate torque technique, but i did loose a crankshaft once due to a flywheel bolt issue. I always locktite and torque those every time now.
Eric you should put some sound proofing up on some of the walls. It's pretty cheap and will cut down on the echoes.
Seatbelts work great have used them for many yrs i have a half dozzen in my tool box
Could you have just bypassed those transmission cooler lines by putting the hose in a loop instead of swapping everything?
Yep exactly what i did... i did a j32a3 swap in my 03 accord 6-6 and just plugged those two lines up.
Thanks for the video Eric! Makes me want to go and wrench on something.
wow, bodgetastic almost as bad as that welded ball joint and that old wheel bearing vid
24:35 Cut one of the hoses in half and plug it at the other end and done
Bless you, Brian.
im i the only one who got Seal's song reference?
At 16:00 minutes in, if I was replacing a clutch and flywheel following this method, would that be it and its just reinstallation from there?
What a nice size garage.
Thanks for the video.
That engine mount that you took off at 2:36 , do you think it will be fine if I change without supporting the engine
I'm not questioning your methods here, because I understand the idea behind them. You've got a customer that wants to pay rock-bottom and cut corners wherever he can, and the car is junky anyways---in this scenario, doing everything "by the book" goes out the window.
35:42 in and I finally get my "Manuel" joke I've been waiting for. I knew you'd do it, lol.
was about to comment about not stuffing the intake ports, then you did it. haha
Next owner is going to have to dump some money into this car if they plan on keeping it.
yeah I don't get it,why replace the engine and reuse a clutch... makes no sense to me
The clutch in this is common in European cars. surprised to see it in American petrol models. refered to as a SAC (self adjusting clutch) with a dmf (dual mass flywheel) it dampens and supreme engine vibration and feedback. In this case the dmf was well past its wear tolerance and I imagine at an estimated cost of 500-600 dollars the owner was somewhat reluctant to pay out.
love the clutch alignment tree 😆
Hi Eric, keep on wrench'n can we have another day at the shop vid ?
+CR2504life Not anytime soon. I'm working on Fairmont videos now. We'll be watching those for some time to come.
