Russ i watch this video of yours time and time again. Seafood Gumbo was may grandmothers specialty and i have never got my nerve up to do it since she passed "God bless her soul" but the more I watch your video makes me more and more want to give it a try
If u ask 100 folks how 2 make gumbo, u will get 100 different ways everybody makes it. The common thread is that "true" gumbo makers understand the importance of a good seafood-stock. This guy clearly knows that & along with a good roux, his gumbo gota b rock'n steady! Great video!!!
This guy is inspirational! I am amazed by his expert techniques, and overwhelmed at the thought of me ever accomplishing this! I am left sure that I could never make Gumbo as well as he does, and yearning to find him and eat his Gumbo! Kudos!
Great tip on making it a super stock! That had to be some fine eats!! And you are right, it doesn't get much better than a homemade seafood gumbo. Great video Rus!! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you and Terynia a Very Happy New Year!!
Thank you Troy! Troy, it's these little things you can do to a gumbo that makes a good gumbo, a great gumbo. It was so fine, and I have over 2 gallons separated and in the freezer for future meals. Hope you and Karen had a great Christmas as well! Happy New Year brother :)
Of course the 2 guys I watch the most on cooking videos would be friends.... Yall both make some great videos, my friends and family think I am some type of Super Chef because of you two.
I have watched about a dozen videos on how to make Seafood Gumbo and many are from New Orleans. This video is by far the best I've seen yet! I think I am ready to start cooking Gumbo. Big thumbs up from Grandma Lola of Bam Bam Kids TV
Man I've been in my kitchen for about 4 hours now (had a couple of ingredient snags and a trip to the store) and whoowee. My whole house smells fantastic. I'm maybe 30 minute out from serving and I'm genuinely excited. Thank you for uploading this for folks like me who can't quite remember how to make gumbo. -A displaced Alabamian in Florida
Excellently done Russ, thank you for sharing... if only we had the fresh seafood here in the rest of the USA... i miss my Moms creole gumbo... a little ole full blooded french lady who lived her entire life in New Orleans. her's was a little browner, i don't recall her adding tomatoes, or at least i didn't notice, but i do remember her adding a handful of chopped oysters. i guess you'er wondering why I am talking so much about my mom.. Well it's Mother's Day today 05/10/2015 and it's more than just her gumbo i miss... Happy Mothers Day to all the beautiful Moms!!!! :)
I used to live in South Louisiana (Houma) to work in an oilfield company, and let me tell you, the food was fantastic.! I miss the days where I enjoyed Gumbo, Jambalaya, Crawfish, Shrimp Pasta, Good sea food, and above all, the warming attention from the Southeners..thanks Louisiana..the men's sport paradise..!!
Finally someone on RUclips who cooks gumbo right.🙌 I'm from Louisiana and it's soo annoying how so many people claim their making gumbo and it's not even close.
I would call this gumbo close to home . The reason I say this is, this is as close to what I remember my mother making, while I was growing up, than any gumbo that I have seen, to this day . When mother would make her gumbo, couldn't wait til it was cooked, but it was always better on the following day . And to me, of course, hers was always the best . It was slightly on the spicy hot side, that while I was eating it, I would sweat from my forehead . Being that I'm from Mobile Alabama, I have tasted a number of seafood gumbo . My mother is almost 87 now, and no where near able of making her gumbo today . Those were truly the good old days . Thanks for sharing the video, even though it has been on RUclips for some time now . Man; that's some good stuff !!!!
+Thomas Ballard Thomas, that sounds just like me growing up and anticipating mama's gumbo as she was cooking it. Nothing is ever better than when mama did it. Thanks so much for the comment, and your not all that far away from me. I'm here in Biloxi
melvin george I'm right there with you Melvin. Displaced Cajun here, grew up in Houma, LA. I'm not sure who taught this guy how to cook Gumbo, but they had some kind of Cajun blood in them. Hmm, I need to make a gumbo... or perhaps a jambalaya... or roast beef poboys... decisions, haha
My Grandfather on my Dad's side of the family was full blooded French from Cajun country. I guess my love for Cajun food comes from that, or it could be because it's the best tasting food in the world! ;)
Alabama boy here. I have spent years in Louisiana and I have never heard of using a reduction. Wow! that is definitely a twist I am going to incorporate! Also.... If there is anyone out there that has never tried Conecuh sausage you gotta try it! One can only find it in the deep south. i.e. Alabama, Misssissippi, Louisiana and the Florida panhandle. I also use it in gumbo. To me it is much better than andoulli. This is an awesome recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Do you have a wife??? lol I'm just kidding but man THIS IS IT!!! Brings back memories of me being in the kitchen with my Big Mama.... I'll definitely use your recipe for New Years. Thank you so much for sharing!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! My husband found it in 2015 and it has been our favorite gumbo recipe. We should know, living on the Gulf Coast! It is also something we cook together and it takes us all day. We LOVE it!!!
Your welcome and thank you for the feedback! Glad y'all have enjoyed the recipe! Being Gulf Coast residents, then you know good gumbo when you taste it :)
This was my first time watching someone cook gumbo. Fantastic! I can't wait to try it. You did an outstanding job explaining the process. Thank you so much.
Love how nothing is wasted.. Solid flavor and nutrients. Lord does that look good. That is some intense cooking skills passed down to all the kids. Appreciate that.
I tried your recipe, and I must say it is the best Gumbo I have ever had in my life. Some of my family from Louisiana even asked me for the recipe. I gave them your name on here and they absolutely loved it. Thank u for sharing!!!!
MR. RUS, SIR...I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT GUMBO! I'M FROM PHILLY AND I CAME TO YOUR RECIPE 2YRS AGO AND I COME BACK EVERY YEAR! I MAKE THIS EVERY CHRISTMAS SINCE THEN! IT IS SO FLAVORFUL AND GOOD! I COOK LIKE I'M FROM DOWN SOUTH! THANK YOU FOR THE RECIPE AND HAPPY HOLIDAY'S
WELL DONE ! YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO THOSE WHO APPRECIATE GOOD FOOD AND ARE HESITANT TO JUST JUMP IN AND TRY. MUCH LIKE RACHEL RAY GIVING THESE STEP BY STEP TUTORIALS, YOU INSPIRE WOULD BE FOODIES INTO ACTION. I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE OUT THERE TO START WITH SOMETHING SIMPLE AND THAT SUCCESS WILL BREED SUCCESS AND EVENTUALLY YOU CAN TACKLE THIS FANTASTIC GUMBO RECIPE. AS THIS MAN POINTS OUT, THE FLAVORS THAT COME OUT ARE UNREAL ! WAY TO GO DUDE !!!
Your cooking videos are the best! Its the quality of the ingredients & seasonings, the great cook ware and the way that you explain things intelligently and at a perfect pace! I'm a loyal subscriber brother!
My mom puts the same dried shrimp in the gumbo and let me tell you!! Absolutely amazing I try not to eat them all by themselves.😂 I'm from Baton Rouge Louisiana
This may be the greatest thing I've ever seen. I love Gumbo and yours looked so good I was drooling like a dog! You just cant beat good Cajun cooking. Love it thanks for the recipe!
Been looking up gumbo recipes all day AND LOW AND BEHOLD!!! I FOUND IT.!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! but you almost lost me cleaning those crabs in the beginning lol. So glad I toughed it out and kept watching because I'M MAKING YOUR RECIPE FOR NEW YEAR'S. SO I'LL BE SPENDING TUESDAY COOKING IT SO IT'LL BE FANTASTIC ON WEDNESDAYS... GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY..HAPPY NEW YEAR'S 😊😊
(Disclaimer: I'm Canadian) I've always heard of gumbo, I know it's a southern thing, but I've never tried it, or seen it, or really had an clue what it is. Great video!
+Exile N Subjugate I hope you get to try gumbo one day. It's so tasty and has always been a top favorite with people in this region. Thank you for watching, I appreciate it
+Smoky Ribs BBQ & Southern Cuisine I'll have to try to make my own since I don't plan on being in Louisiana any time soon, I'll be sure to use your recipe Cheers!
The dried shrimp, with the non- slimey okra & the wine in the seafood stock. The seafood stock concentrate. This guy does not play! Very impressed. Different then how I due it, but so much better. This man is a saint, he really cares.
when I made your version of gumbo I used lobster shells, ( used the heads and tails ) to make my seafood stock along with the shrimp bodies, it was soooo good
Yeah it was, I live in Vancouver Canada and I go to my local fresh seafood market and buy 2 or 3 lobster bodies for like $4. each, I save all the crab legs, ship shells and lobster tails that I eat then I just freeze them and when I want to make my stock I pull them out and cook it all up and once its all made ( the gumbo that is ) I will freeze it and when ever I want it I will pull out a small container and use it for dinner and my lunch at work the next day
Yeah, I like to portion a gumbo out in one quart freezer bags after I cook a big pot, and then freeze it. It freezes very well, and really handy when wanting something great to eat, but not in the mood for a long cook. I also freeze shrimp heads and shells, and crab shells and such when I cook seafood to save for a good stock.
@@SmokyRibsBBQ I'm just tuning in to your channel and has been watching all day.. I'm hooked... I love Gumbo but never knew how to make it. I didnt even know you suppose to use the shells from shrimp and crablegs. Jesus! thank you! I'm definitely gone try this❤❤
Your video ended up costing me $140 and 12 hours last Saturday. I promised my family that dinner would be ready at 7 p.m - I think we ended up digging in near midnight. Well, well worth it. I love how much effort is put into the stock/reduction ALONE! The flavor is just outrageous. I lived in New Orleans for many years and I've never seen a gumbo done nearly as well as yours. Love your channel. Now lets see your Jambalaya!
Yeah, back in the day, gumbo was one of those things you could make inexpensively, but with the price of seafood now days, it can be very expensive, but making a big batch does allow you to freeze a lot of it, and have it over several months, so that does make it better. Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it, and I know first hand how much work this is lol! To this day, this has got to be the longest hardest video I've done to date, but it's been well worth the effort! I don't have a straight up jambalaya video up, but I do have a recipe you will love, and really easy to do if you like fried foods. It's always a hit when I make them. It's an older video, but good recipe: ruclips.net/video/_9mgOkzm-xg/видео.html
Rus, this recipe is very close to what my mom, my uncle in Hattiesburg and my aunt in Mobile made. I never got a paper copy before they passed, so I'll be using yours. Thank you!
Incredible. I have made Gumbo several times, none close to this one. I never saw one with the reduction anywhere, that is just awesome. So I am burning my Recipes and starting fresh. Great job Rus!
Thanks Steve! I'm not for sure, but this is more than likely the only place you will see this reduction in a gumbo recipe. I adapted this to my gumbos about 10 years ago, and have never heard of anyone else doing it, but it will probably pop up everywhere now, lol! You seen it here first ;) Thanks again brother!!
Oh yeah Rus, The Reduction will be everywhere now, after this Video how can it not be. I wish I had those ingredient's on hand now, I would so go for it.
Dang Rus, that was some serious gumbo! Those are some excellent tips and tricks, I've never added tomatoes to a gumbo, sounds really good. A bowl of that would cost you $20 in a restaurant.
Thanks Tom! The addition of tomatoes and okra is what classifies it as a Creole gumbo. That's the way I was raised eating and making it. I've had it without tomatoes but will choose tomatoes any day over that. Give it a try one day and let me know what you think. It really adds a nice element into the gumbo. $20 in a restaurant is why I make it my self, lol! I ended up with enough to eat two meals with, and still froze over 2 gallons. That's the way to do it ;)
I'm hooked & had to subscribe after watching this!! God bless you for sharing your cooking..it looks incredibly delicious with all the fresh seafood the crabs, shrimps, crab meat & your tips about baking the okra before adding it. I'm from California this is my first time watching how to make Southern food & I can say it's really something special!! I would love to live in the South & experience the Southern hospitality! What I have been missing out on all my life!!!! Blessings to you all ♥♥ xoxo
Thank you Ken, and thanks so much for supporting my channel! I appreciate it a lot! Hope you and your family have a Happy New Year, and that 2015 brings you and your family much success! :)
I'm watching from the UK and have been watching several cooking programme type things from the US, always been interested in what a real gumbo is, this recipe looks fantastic. Love the fact that you're making you're own stock and leaving nothing to waste! Subscribed and will check the rest of your stuff!
+Sir Bashkov Thank you, and yes, this gumbo is as real as it gets. I sure appreciate you watching, and subscribing. Hope you enjoy more of the videos :)
I have never been so captivated by a video. If I were invited to come for gumbo, I would purchase an airline ticket. I am intrigued with all of this and will try it although we don't have whole crabs in my city. I'm impressed how it was made w/100% LOVE.
This s%^t was amazing...pain in the ass to make,(just takes time--like you said), but i grabbed some seafood from Fayards in ocean springs and gave it a whirl. just an amazing creole gumbo recipe. best seafood gumbo i've ever eaten.
Hey, you must be really close to me. Fayards is only minutes from where I live. Yeah, a good gumbo takes a lot of work, but always worth the effort, and the best part, is the left overs freeze really good, so you can still enjoy it months from now. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!
Take Vyvanse like I do, then cook this three hours before it wears off. That way the focus meds wear off right when you get hungry and when the gumbo is done! Lol!
Thank you for sharing. I really like what you wrote, and how you made sure to show that there isn't a catechism for making gumbo - but there sure is a spirit, and a way about it. I met a guy a few decades ago that was a graduate of a high flying culinary academy that was trained in how to run and own his own restaurant. He never let me see gumbo made like you did. He had shortcuts for the stock you presented that substituted shrimp heads and shells and crab scraps reduced. He used clam juice and I think oyster liquor. I've never seen a reduction like yours..I got shown how to use andouille sausage and tasso ham. I've never heard of the sausage you showed in your video, but just learning from you about how you knew about it makes me really thankful that I could learn a little more about gumbo. Thank you.!
Dang Rus - I just found my self singing your intro song in my head as I was watching your video haha! Great looking bowl of Gumbo! Nice job and I agree on using fresh seafood!
Lol about the singing Jason! That might be a good thing if everyone else starts doing it too, lol! Thanks Jason, and yes, fresh makes all the difference ;)
Thank you for calling it a Creole style Gumbo . I could tell looking at the opening pic that you used carrots tomatos wine and Worsterchire sauce . Cajun gumbo is looser , not near as chunky and will never have tomatos in it and no carrots used in stock . What you have there is Gulf coast gumbo you get from New Orleans on east .

My grandmother used dried shrimp. Your the first recipe I've found with this ingredient. Ive found the truth!
why do I torture myself by watching a food recipe of one of my favorite dishes on an empty stomach?
Food porn!!
I asked myself the same question why?🤣🤣🤣
When I get homesick I look at gumbo recipes on youtube. I love your video because your accent is like listening to home.

Out of all the gumbo videos this is the best one hands down. I can't stop watching..

This guy knows what's up.
Rus, this recipe is very close to what my mom, my uncle in Hattiesburg and my aunt in Mobile made. I never got a paper copy before they passed, so I'll be using yours.
Thank you!
that was professional style GUMBO!!!!!!
OMG... This is the REAL gumbo... Thank you so much for this recipe... 👅😋😛😜😝
Bang up job! My tip is I always add a dash of liquid crab boil seasoning yeah boy that's mighty fine.
Thank you Rus..you too brother.
Now now now!!!! That's how you cook some gumbo!!!!

Bree Michelle YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL ALSO SWEETFACE
You sir are a chef. Well spoken, clear and concise
*Russ U Da Man, Gumbo Thumbs Up!*
Not only is the food amazing looking, but I learned how to differentiate male and female crabs too.
Delicious AND informative!
Great video!
+Sev3r333 Thank you! I appreciate you watching and the comments 😊
I bet this Gumbo is incredible
+Mrs. Oubre Not to brag, but it is top notch gumbo. Thanks so much for watching :)
WOW! I have cooked gumbo my whole life but this is over the top. Best gumbo recipe I have seen yet. I can not wait to try this.
My Grandmother made it a lot like yours ..except there was no frogbone...lol. She was from Eunice La. Born 1919. Died 2007
I have never been so captivated by a video. If I were invited to come for gumbo, I would purchase an airline ticket. I am intrigued with all of this and will try it although we don't have whole crabs in my city. I'm impressed how it was made w/100% LOVE.
Glad you enjoyed the video, and I sure appreciate you watching! :)
Wish we had smellivision, cause if it smells anywhere near how good it looks, have mercy
That's the best gumbo recipe I've ever seen! You can taste all those flavors coming up together ! Amazing! Thanks buddy!
Glad you liked it!!
Give this man a tv show
That would be nice :D
Hes making his own!
Holy cow! Mouth watering just watching this ! You go my brother you really put your foot in that gumbo.
This guy knows his stuff! Been making this for a few years and I LOVE IT!!!!
I love this guy, but I could never recreate this recipe. Ever.
+Puppycakez you can if you believe you can...
QueefJuiceOverflow The ADHD is just too strong.
Take Vyvanse like I do, then cook this three hours before it wears off. That way the focus meds wear off right when you get hungry and when the gumbo is done! Lol!
+bcgmktg I usually get hungry the day after which would be perfect for this recipe!
+MsBellaFate I thought I was the only one to get hungry the day after my medicine and cooking in general!
One of the best Gumbo recipes I have ever tried. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
I really wish you'd mention the contents of the seasoning when you use mixes for those of us that aren't in your region to buy that stuff.
Just Google Cajun seasoning recipe and it will work
Smoky Ribs BBQ & Southern Cuisine Thank you very much for the reply.
Your welcome
Thank you.!
Your welcome and thanks for the comment. Glad you could learn more about making gumbo from my video. I appreciate you watching!
Will you marry me? Lol....this looks soooooooooo good!!
I followed this recipe to the tee on. Christmas 2018. My family STILLS talking about that. One million thanks, WHO DAT 🖤💛🖤💛
Yummy!
Simone 212 YOU'RE SOO BEAUTIFUL SWEETFACE
Some of the best seafood gumbo tips I've seen on RUclips.
Great to hear!
The yellow stuff and orange eggs inside the crab is seafood butter!!! I eat that whole thing! Yummmmo!!!!
So what. I like tomatoes in my gumbo..his gumbo look better then some on RUclips. I hate watery gumbo
@@courtneyjames8223 he's saying it's an accurate description bc Creole has tomatoes and Cajun doesn't.
Wonderful stuff, sir. You've made this Louisiana girl proud!
+Tiffany Thomas Thank you so much! I sure appreciate that :)
Wish I could just smell it...
