@@ejxl11Because strive is arc system's most successful game, that there is no reason for them to deviate from strive's gameplay style in their future projects. Every arc system game from now on will be strive like.
Blazblue came into existence because ArcSys lost the rights to large parts of the Guilty Gear series. Once they got it back, and after Xrd did better than the most recent Blazblue game they let Mori do what he wanted with the series in what was failure after failure. The VNs struggled to make their money back and the Gacha that was meant to continue the story came out 6 years later than planned and was shut down within a year.
I agree that the state of BB is a sad one. I think eventually a new BB will be in the cards, but maybe not for years. GG strive will have to die out for a while for that to happen. I'm gonna heavily disagree with your 2d sprite opinion. Calamity Trigger gained some attention because it was a 2d sprite fighter in an age where everything was turning 3d. The style made it shine and people loved it. The issue I see is that it hasn't evolved since then. Uni and BB are based on an engine that is over a decade old. Your example of Uni 2 isn't the best comparison to other recent 3d model fighters because it's not a "new" game but more of an expansion. Much like how MMOs graphics are dated by their release. A comparison to melty blood type lumina might be more accurate to compare. Gameplay is always king. If a game is fun, people will play off word of mouth, even if it looks dated. There are plenty of indie games that lack graphic polish that make it big. I personally would love it if BB revolutionized sprite based 2d fighters again. It won't happen. The cost is too much. And that's the issue with staying with sprite based games.
I can safely say I'm a massive BB fan and I have been loving Entropy Effect. The studio did a great job bringing over the characters into side scrolling action game with the roguelite genre allowing to create some amazing moments of screen filling chaos. Would I prefer that it continued the story? Yes, but I think the game is a great way for newcomers to really fall in love with the cast. I for one am hoping for the game's continued success.
I thought Arc Sys meant that they would make a new Blazblue after they were done with Strive I guess It might not be Blazblue but Strive has been going on for a while now they got to do something new sooner or later
I'm of the full believe "Blazblue" is finished, or dead if you prefer that terminology. I'm convinced that ASW just...doesn't care about "BB" now that they have "Guilty Gear" back. Ever since it returned, "BB" has continually been getting undercut more and more, to the point where the series is only getting outsourced to foreign developers now. "Central Fiction" lacked a number of staple features that were present in prior entries. "BBTAG", regardless if you want to count it as a proper "BB" entry or not, was an asset dump that released unfinished. "Dark War"...was so underbaked it shut down less than a year after it released. "Entropy Effect" isn't even a "BB" game, it only uses the characters as superficial avatar skins and nothing past that. And of course, whatever that new project is from MACOVILL, a developer mostly known for cheap mobile game stuff. All in the span of "GG" getting two whole new entries (with one reiteration), continued support on "Strive", and an entire animated project. The difference in treatment couldn't be any more apparent. But the worst part is that ASW did to Mori with "BB" what they themselves went through with "GG". Mori left ASW, likely in poor terms despite surface statements, and now doesn't have rights to it anymore. He clearly wants to continue the series, between "Dark War" technically being a sequel (even saying he'll finish the story in some other way after it shut down) and his interviews implying he wanted to do more with "BBTAG",...but just can't now. It's ironic and very sad.
The sucky part about sprite work is its so hard for the untrained eye to tell at a glance when things look great. BlazBlue rocked some sick-ass 720p sprites for the time, the same HD level of KoF 13 sprites, and P4U. Fast forward to games like BBtag where the Uni sprites got upscaled and the RWBY and Yumi from Senran were brand new and cracked 1080 ( Like Melty Blood Type Lumina) on how clean they looked. Then there's Heart Aino's sprite which was made new cause Examu had nothing to do after making the best-looking sprites ever in Million Arthur Arcana Blood, a game nobody plays cause of that shitty steam release it got pre-pandemic.
I thought sprites costing a lot more to do than 3D was the reason they don't happen as much anymore UNI2 and Melty Blood had problems at launch that stopped more people from getting into them but they still did pretty well when comparing them to other smaller fighting games I just feel like the sprites aren't the problem

apparently mori really likes the roguelite and it's what motivated the devs to keep it running even after the company fired half the devs
Wouldn't mind seeing Mori take inspiration from BBEE and go in that direction if he was to do a spiritual successor.
