OMFG, I felt the same once Emma brought it up. I kinda didnT pay attention to the people's accents and ... it's rough on so many levels. Also, I'm always pretty surprised when this kind of weird ... types of Christian fundamentalism shine through as I've mostly come across that in a more US context. They seem quieter in their fundamentalism in Germany, but that also makes me feel they're "more" insidious by being less overt. (There's a German Girl Defined book translation and there was some kind of convention, that really shocked me!)

I always found it ridiculous that sci-fi always has each species be almost entirely unified. Can you ever imagine humanity unifying? These sort of oppression fantasies always terrify me a little. Because if this is what you imagine the "enemy" will do, if given control, you can easily justify doing likewise to them. People are as trustworthy as their ability to trust, and these people are just full of fear and suspicion, and spreading it.
I find it hard to accept the possibility of the oppression fantasy portrayed in the film, it is just too ridiculous. They have to at least be believably possible.

I love the fact that the movie depicts a world spanning uebergovernment that allows access to a world wide web, and hasn't censored outlawed topics from wikipedia. Shows some real deep thought on the part of the 'writers.'
Really hammers home how totally inexperienced they are with any sort of actual oppression. Like, I don't think a single person involved in this movie has a friend who has been profiled by the police, let alone censored or injured by the government. It's really laughable. Like kids playing cops and robbers but they're all 35.

The entire subtext of this movie reminds me of what it is like to be in the evangelical Christian community. Everybody thinks that they are prosecuted on a minute by minute basis, and they are just looking forward to the day when they finally die so they can go to heaven. A deathcult can be very difficult to stomach at times.
It's so ironic how much they hate living in the world their Supreme Being created for them. I have to feel like if God did exist, He must be pretty pissed at how His Children keep shitting on the world He put them on and how they treat all His other children. It makes me feel like a disappointed parent that has a child constantly complaining about the food served at the dinner table and having to eat with everyone else.

The cop just letting the guy ramble on without asking any questions isn't a bad tactic. The guy exposed himself as a criminal and the cop can still ask whatever questions he wants plus some new ones with information that he's learned.
Yeah the worst thing a suspect can do in an interrogation is talk. A good interrogator will just let them bury themselves while gently guiding the conversation where they want it to go. All the while gathering bits of information that can be used against them.

Start by building rapport with the interviewee, get them talking, gently prod them along, then if/when inconsistencies start appearing, or the suspect drops hints or even states things that raise suspicion, dial up the heat in increments.
Fun fact: Most car chases are shot at relatively slow speeds. If you know how to stage and shoot them, and add the right sound effects, they seem fast.
I don't know why, but the weirdest part of the movies "plot" is the fact it takes place 5 years after covid. Like make it like 50, something a little more realistic for religion just disappearing. No government could get this all done that quickly.
If such a government could, then it might just impress just about everyone, especially if they still allow people to easily use online search engines. It might give the impression that such a government is not as oppressive as the movie tries to suggest.

If you believe in magical thinking, it's not hard to imagine it all happening because God wanted it to. Today is normal, tomorrow is the start of the end of the world. Makes total sense to fundamentalists.
So here's my random thoughts. Some bad movies are "so bad they're good" because the people involved are trying so hard. Nobody in this movie is trying at all. Everyone is just fulfilling their obligation. The only one proud of their work is Lamp.
That's kind of the thing with most evangelical media, the quality of the product, and even whether it effectively conveys the message are far less important than whether the message follows the magic formula and serves as a shibboleth.

When you mentioned the non-christian character my first thought was "oh no, she's gonna convert by the end of the film isn't she?". They could've just left it at "oh we're so persecuted that even others can recognize it" but they had to use her to (I presume) make some point about how powerful the message of Christianity is. It's like we're treated either as evil, bitter, and hopeless or as potential converts who have just lost our way. The latter is preferable representation but it's still really patronizing.
I once was getting to know this Peruvian Christian girl, and she eventually told me I was a "stray sheep". That's how these people see others. You're either a Christian, or you have to be saved. If you're not a Christian and you're not gonna be saved, you're the devil or something. She had a clearly native american incan look too, and it's really sad to realize she's the byproduct of effective brainwashing through the centuries of colonization.

My headcanon for this movie is that it’s unreliably narrated. The protagonists are actually extremists who are committing actual crimes. They don’t consider anyone else to be truly Christian. The guy that snitches on them probably met a member of a minority the protagonists were prosecuting and realized that they were nice. BUT THATS JUST A THEORY-

Its not a constitution though by technicality, as it was not voted on by all citizens. It serves the same function and is generally accepted as such, but its an argument some nutjobs try to make for modern Germany not existing. Its just good to know about that in case you come across them.

I love the idea the movie kinda insinuates, where these fish-spraying dorks are patting themselves on the back for a few gatherings and some phone numbers while Lucinda's ACTUAL in-government resistance does all the work to protect people

This is the result of putting the message ahead of the story. So many Christian stories meant to evangelize non-Christians are unreadable to anyone who doesn't already know the code. It was fun listening to how you suffered watching it. (Sorry, I'm an author, suffering is part of my work).
Everyone in the united states has heard of Jesus and Christianity. From those culturally christian to openly anti-theist, most everyone has heard the stories (at least to the extent those not having actually read the bible do) that are told by them. But they think that if you're not a believer, you just haven't been told yet! (or otherwise). It's very tone deaf and culty.

Why is it that right-wing entertainment- comedy, music, film - is so bad? One is tempted to suggest that “artists” who haven’t the talent to make it in mainstream entertainment cynically skew their output toward an audience by red-flagging that audience’s prejudices and grievances. I noticed this years ago with the rise of “contemporary Christian “ music performers. More recently we are seeing right-wing comedians whose idea of humor is cruelty and bullying, as well as this spate of amateurish Christian-paranoid films over the past few years. Unfortunately, this brand of “entertainment “ finds a paying audience amoung those influenced by the culture surrounding them.
I guess it doesn't take much imagination to pander to the status quo. In my experience Conservatives lack imagination and emotional intelligence. They like number crunching, they like things to just 'work as they should', including people. Interestingly though Conservatives will often enjoy thing's that weren't 'made for them' if such a thing exists. They struggle to read media, often don't get satire when they see it.
When people talk about why "conservative" comedy being bad, I always come to the conclusion that it is bad because for that audience, being conservative isn't enough, it needs to be explicitly Republican. Mainstream media is almost by deffinition centrist and moderate, but for the people who makes "conservative" their branding, that's not enough, that's to left-leaning. They want the culture to be push very _far_ towards the Right, to the detriment of any artistic necessities (somewhere in the Bible it says that it's impossible to serve both God and money at the same time, so you could also say that it's impossible to serve Art and the Republican agenda at the same time too)
Unrelated to my previous comment, I think Christian contemporany music has the same problem a lot of House and Electro Dance have: unearned climaxes. The music feels generic and insincere because every song tries to be religious experience, a born-again moment of extasis, and it's not only unreasonble to expect _every_ song to be powerfully moving and emocional and uplifting, that expectation and repetition also cheapens the impact of the few song that do manage to evoque those fellings
Any art form that originates as a reaction to the prevailing orthodoxy tends to be mostly pretty bad for quite a long time. Much 'alternative' comedy was terrible; a lot of the music of the Sixties counter-culture was terrible; many experimental novels, plays and films are terrible. It's not that society doesn't understand their creators' genius; it's that being terrible is sort of the point, because if the current aesthetic is about imposing a set of rules which determine form and content, abandoning those is the only way to demolish it. From this chaos a new aesthetic eventually develops by which quality can eventually be judged in objective terms, the good stuff rises to the top and the terrible stuff fades into obscurity. In the case of propaganda, however (such as this film), there's no artistic objective, no honesty and no authentic communication between creator and audience; it's about closing minds, not opening them, and so no aesthetic improvement is necessary or, indeed, possible. No one who isn't already a paranoid Christian zealot will watch this film other than to criticise it, and criticising it only feeds that paranoia.

I'm from Germany, and I was a devote Catholic Christian for many years, because that faith helped my Grandparents during the horrors of poverty and war and actually prevented them from becoming Nazis or collaborators as soldiers in the Wehrmacht. I was a choirboy (no, I wasn't abused) and served the Catholic church in several services (before I finally became a communist lol). Despite I disagree on a philosophical level with both the Catholic and the Protestant church in Germany, I have to say, during the pandemic they did a good job. They closed the buildings, imposed mask mandates and had high hygiene measures in the times when it was necessary. The Wesleys are not representatives of the Christian community in Germany, which is broadly rather tolerant and inclusive. They are an apocalyptic and fundamentalist sect. The reason why the language of this movie is English is IMO that they know that their audience is rather American then German.
When someone even mentions audio design even tangentially, i get emotional. It is so forgotten part of cinema and media that it is only appreciated enough in the "biz" and even then.. well, lets put it this way: the directors that achieve something greater than the sum of their parts have especial affinity to sound. If you want to become good in the "biz" start paying attention to sound. When you forget that sound design exists as an art form or as a practical thing: you accomplished your goal. And that is the reason general public does not realize how important it is. It is a bit like cleaning: no one notices it until there is a stain on the floor.
Humans take their hearing for granted. But it was one of our most important senses when we were an arboreal species that couldn't see all that was around them due to the forest canopy we lived in. Not being able to readily discern a leopard from a stiff breeze moving a few branches could be deadly. Having an off sound environment in a production is jarring to many people.

The only thing lacking from Assassin 33A.D. was a guest appearance by Kevin Sorbo. It was so bad it made me feel angry. Anyone tempted to watch it should have a stack of soft toys to throw at the screen without damaging it.
I recently made the mistake of watching one of those christian movies. Without the persecution complex, but the whole "your life is shit because you don't trust in god", "you just need to pray to fix your issues", "oh your daughter died, but it's good, because she's with god now", "god hasn't abandoned you he just works in mysterious ways" is not a substitute for telling a story and them being sad for like half a day before getting over the death of a child just weirded me out.🤢 I don't know how I managed to sit through the whole thing. I only know I wished to rewind time to get the0 ~2h of my time back afterwards.
I can't wait for the reviews of the movie these guys are making at the moment. It will have quite the innovative plot. A business woman travels to a small town during the Christmas time. There she will met a humble guy who shows her the true meaning of Christmas and in the end she is a christian. Never heard of any plot similar to this
I watched this review as I was cooling off from a rather heated discussion about my outlook on life with my mother. She seems to think that me being realistic is nihilism. Watching this review of a ridiculous movie by one of my favorite creators has really helped me to return to my center and away from the lingering niggling negative feelings and thoughts. I get the same accusations. For example, let's say a person or group has lied to me in our last ten interactions. I think it is reasonable to assume they will lie in the eleventh as well. Indeed I think it would be quite foolish to assume they will not. Could they be honest? Certainly. Will they? Doubtful. My family calls this pessimism.
Nihilism is the position that having a value system of any kind from which you derive meaning is inherently unethical due to the fact that we are obviously never fully omniscient. It is not composed of cynicism, since cynicism still applies a value judgment (albeit a cynical one like "nobody can really be trusted"), and it is not composed of pessimism, since that applies a value judgement that there IS something to be desired but it's just impossible to get. Also has nothing to do with narcissism, since that applies the value judgement of "I am above others in importance/worth". It's the most humble/neutral position you can have, I feel like, since you're admitting to your own inherent ignorance of how the world actually works.
I know it's no excuse for wooden acting, and clearly having actor's who aren't native English speakers would effect this, but I feel like Evangelical media has this idea of "stoic suffering". Which is hilarious, because they never shut up about it.
As far as a couple of other "movies so bad they're good" I would suggest, the first would be the 1959 sci-fi/horror film "Plan 9 From Outer Space". It's amazing and a shining example of what can be achieved when you have WAY more ambition than budget. The other is a little known horror film from 1986 called "Truth or Dare? - A Critical Madness" directed and written by Tim Ritter. It's absolutely bonkers and horrible, but I give it a chef's kiss of rewatchability.
I've noticed a bizarre increase in religious propaganda movies on all the streaming services that I use. It's like they are desperately trying to convince us that their magical ancient god myths have any relevance in an enlightened world.
This is why I feel really bad for the TAs at film schools. Ocasionally you get cult classics like Evil Dead, which was a film school project. But most of the time I imagine films like these, possibly worse, if that's possible.
In the 50's and 60's we have "The Ten Commandments" "Ben Hur" "The Greatest Story Ever Told". In the 2020's "God is Not Dead" Series and "2025" no words necessary!

Emma is my perfect comfort youtuber, she can make you feel at home without turning your brain off, that's a rare thing in a RUclipsr, which I can appreciate.
What's sad is there are Christian films that at least put forth some effort. When I was a Christian I remember being at least mildly impressed by the Kendrick bros films, like Fireproof and Courageous. And adaptations of Ted Dekker's fiction novels like Three and House, or Frank Peretti's The Visitation were not half bad. Not saying anyone should watch them, but its proof you don't need a giant budget or hollywood stars. Honestly I might not watch these films, but I would respect the actors, directors, staff and such if they actually put forth more effort into learning the trade. Horror movie Cube was made with a budget of like $400K or less and it's one of my favorites.
Cube is an excellent example of how you can produce high quality films with little to no money. The writing was good, and you were invested in the characters, despite the set size. On the contrary, this 2025 movie seems to be about as opposite of that as you can possibly get without changing the budget significantly.
In my opinion, the best films about Christianity are the films made by Scorsese. "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Silence" are two of the best films I ever seen, period.
I watched this in one sitting, but with a group of friends that joined me in riffing on it. It came out recently that the male lead and the female lead are dating in real life, but she just turned 18 recently. She was something like 14 or 15 when the movie was made.
A good interrogation technique is to allow the suspect to just keep talking until they incriminate themselves which it sounds like the actor was doing, not that they probably new that 😂
The 'Judas' character Luke selling out his family to the authorities is the most authentic Christian experience in this movie. "Luke sold out his family..." "oh you mean Lucy, who you've dead-named 5 times in the last 2 minutes" " Yes I don't know why Luke sold us out" - and as this movie is from that far beyond the pale christian perspective, remove any self-introspection and the ability to accept blame and suddenly the Judas moment is a lot more real
14:48 I always set my alarms to weird random times (ie. 6:08am or 7:27am, instead of 6 or 7:30am etc), because then when I’m half asleep and tempted to hit snooze, I have to put a tiny bit more mental effort into figuring out how much time I actually have left to sleep-in… and by the time I suss it out, i’m already awake enough to just stay up. "Back at Lamp HQ", I lost it every single time. My own random thoughts: It's very hard to find a native speaker of English who could read over the script and make corrections. Totally couldn’t have been done. I'm honestly surprised they didn't have Roy return from the dead after three days, just in case it wasn't obvious enough. Were the actors covering their faces with their hands out of embarrassment? You need Wikipedia to tell you how things were six years ago? And the communofascist world government can't manage to edit a Wikipedia page to portray those Christians of the oh-so-distant past in a worse light? In these types of movies I always assume that all the other religions are allowed to flourish because nobody ever complains about anti-Semitism or Islamophobia, the Buddhists and Taoists should be okay, they're an atheistic religion.

I feel like you could really make something out of the fact that the only line a group of covid conspiracists could deliver well was "execute him," but it's probably a reach. Still, very good cold villain clip. Star of the show.
Given the quality of the rest of this movie, if they had done subtitles, it might have been the most memorable accidentally funny subtitles ever (as opposed to deliberately funny like Monty Python). Currently, that's held by something I watched back when Netflix was not only not streaming yet, but they were stocking just about every DVD commercially available instead of just the mainstream releases. "The Heroic Trio" was a Hong Kong movie that had an English dub and English subtitles that were from different scripts. Not a few minor differences, MAJOR plot differences. Then again, as bland as everything was, I'm not sure they could have even managed that.
i know the film is german so this may not apply but i would not be surprised if the creators "don't believe in" subtitles. i have conservative family members (im in the usa) who hate subtitles and think they are "woke" i am not even kidding

I just got a brilliant idea. A few years go there was a TV program in the US called Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3000 for short) which ripped apart cheesy old science fiction movies. (I remember one film where apparently the interior rooms of a rocket ship had brick walls.) Perhaps you can introduce a new genre, ripping apart cheesy Christian apologist movies. In any event, I can't wait until you review the sequel to this wonderful film.

As a German I'm quite surprised by the premise of this film. I wasn't aware that the tiny evangelical fringe we have here apparently adheres to the same persecution complex than their brethren from across the pond. Those QAnon-type evangelicals must be an even smaller subset of the already quite small number of evangelicals in Germany. Frankly, religion, at least organized religion, has lost most of its grip on society and continues to slide into insignificance in much of Europe (certainly in Germany). Here, the state doesn't need to ban Christianity; there's hardly any "born-again" Christians left anyway. (Over the last year the Catholic Church has been bleeding members like never before due to the ongoing stream of child abuse cases that have been coming to light; just last month a new report of a committee looking into cases in the diocese of Freiburg added another pile disturbing cases onto the heap of horror. The Protestant Church didn't have as many child abuse cases but people aren't exactly rushing to join their flock, either; quite the contrary.) So while following the internal logic of the movie, a German setting makes as much (or, rather, as little) sense than a setting anywhere else in this new global regime, real-life circumstances nevertheless wouldn't have made me imagine that such a fundamentalist Christian dystopia would have been conjured up over here, much less actually being filmed. Emma has shown us what Hell is really like. When the film returns to the car chase, it endlessly repeats on a diabolical groundhog day loop for all eternity.
It's really strange to me that you are so focused on knowing the names of characters. This is something that I hardly ever notice. But it's good to know as someone who tries to write stories and struggles to give characters names. A name can tell you a bit about a person and maybe it's a way to keep the people more individual and embodied. So, I got to learn something from you watching a bad movie. Awesome?
It is definitely important whether you do or do not reveal a character's name. In majority of stories I've watched or read, be it TV, movie, games, or books. The only time a character's name is not revealed up front is when it's important not to reveal who that character is. As a way of obscuring the identity because it would spoil suspense. It's also used in some stories to differentiate characters in the story from characters that just exist to flesh out the world, like a character named "male shopkeeper" in contrast to "Kyle". Even as someone bad at remember names, those cues stand out.
A thing I struggled a lot back when I still wrote semi-regularly was to introduce the name of the characters to other characters in a way that felt organic... but it was also a problem I had in real life, I could spend hours talking to someone without neither introducing myself nor asking them their names
In Hawai'i I grew up watching Japanese TV programs, so reading subtitles while watching a movie isn't some kind of unbreakable, painful obstacle that so many in this country seem to suffer from. Maybe that's why more than half of my Blu-ray collection are foreign films, a few that I had to buy from your region B through the BFI, Eureka! and other companies. Why did I bring that up? The entire subtext of this movie reminds me of what it is like to be in the evangelical Christian community. Everybody thinks that they are prosecuted on a minute by minute basis, and they are just looking forward to the day when they finally die so they can go to heaven. A deathcult can be very difficult to stomach at times.
It's so ironic how much they hate living in the world their Supreme Being created for them. I have to feel like if God did exist, He must be pretty pissed at how His Children keep shitting on the world He put them on and how they treat all His other children. It makes me feel like a disappointed parent that has a child constantly complaining about the food served at the dinner table and having to eat with everyone else.

The cop just letting the guy ramble on without asking any questions isn't a bad tactic. The guy exposed himself as a criminal and the cop can still ask whatever questions he wants plus some new ones with information that he's learned.
Yeah the worst thing a suspect can do in an interrogation is talk. A good interrogator will just let them bury themselves while gently guiding the conversation where they want it to go. All the while gathering bits of information that can be used against them.

I don't know why, but the weirdest part of the movies "plot" is the fact it takes place 5 years after covid. Like make it like 50, something a little more realistic for religion just disappearing. No government could get this all done that quickly.
If such a government could, then it might just impress just about everyone, especially if they still allow people to easily use online search engines. It might give the impression that such a government is not as oppressive as the movie tries to suggest.
The only case where this would be cool is if it was intentionally weird and there was something paranormal or whatever going on behind the scenes

So here's my random thoughts. Some bad movies are "so bad they're good" because the people involved are trying so hard.
Nobody in this movie is trying at all. Everyone is just fulfilling their obligation. The only one proud of their work is Lamp.
That's kind of the thing with most evangelical media, the quality of the product, and even whether it effectively conveys the message are far less important than whether the message follows the magic formula and serves as a shibboleth.

When you mentioned the non-christian character my first thought was "oh no, she's gonna convert by the end of the film isn't she?". They could've just left it at "oh we're so persecuted that even others can recognize it" but they had to use her to (I presume) make some point about how powerful the message of Christianity is. It's like we're treated either as evil, bitter, and hopeless or as potential converts who have just lost our way. The latter is preferable representation but it's still really patronizing.
I once was getting to know this Peruvian Christian girl, and she eventually told me I was a "stray sheep". That's how these people see others. You're either a Christian, or you have to be saved. If you're not a Christian and you're not gonna be saved, you're the devil or something.

My headcanon for this movie is that it’s unreliably narrated. The protagonists are actually extremists who are committing actual crimes. They don’t consider anyone else to be truly Christian. I love the idea the movie kinda insinuates, where these fish-spraying dorks are patting themselves on the back for a few gatherings and some phone numbers while Lucinda's ACTUAL in-government resistance does all the work to protect people
So this is basically just persecution porn for Christians, and suffering porn for masochists. That tracks.

This is the result of putting the message ahead of the story. So many Christian stories meant to evangelize non-Christians are unreadable to anyone who doesn't already know the code. It was fun listening to how you suffered watching it. (Sorry, I'm an author, suffering is part of my work).
Everyone in the united states has heard of Jesus and Christianity. From those culturally christian to openly anti-theist, most everyone has heard the stories (at least to the extent those not having actually read the bible do) that are told by them. But they think that if you're not a believer, you just haven't been told yet! (or otherwise). It's very tone deaf and culty.
It's the same problem with Christian and Crypto video games.

Why is it that right-wing entertainment- comedy, music, film - is so bad? One is tempted to suggest that “artists” who haven’t the talent to make it in mainstream entertainment cynically skew their output toward an audience by red-flagging that audience’s prejudices and grievances. I noticed this years ago with the rise of “contemporary Christian “ music performers. More recently we are seeing right-wing comedians whose idea of humor is cruelty and bullying, as well as this spate of amateurish Christian-paranoid films over the past few years. Unfortunately, this brand of “entertainment “ finds a paying audience amoung those influenced by the culture surrounding them.
I guess it doesn't take much imagination to pander to the status quo. In my experience Conservatives lack imagination and emotional intelligence. They like number crunching, they like things to just 'work as they should', including people. Interestingly though Conservatives will often enjoy thing's that weren't 'made for them' if such a thing exists. They struggle to read media, often don't get satire when they see it.
When people talk about why "conservative" comedy being bad, I always come to the conclusion that it is bad because for that audience, being conservative isn't enough, it needs to be explicitly Republican. Mainstream media is almost by deffinition centrist and moderate, but for the people who makes "conservative" their branding, that's not enough, that's to left-leaning. They want the culture to be push very _far_ towards the Right, to the detriment of any artistic necessities (somewhere in the Bible it says that it's impossible to serve both God and money at the same time, so you could also say that it's impossible to serve Art and the Republican agenda at the same time too)
Unrelated to my previous comment, I think Christian contemporany music has the same problem a lot of House and Electro Dance have: unearned climaxes. The music feels generic and insincere because every song tries to be religious experience, a born-again moment of extasis, and it's not only unreasonble to expect _every_ song to be powerfully moving and emocional and uplifting, that expectation and repetition also cheapens the impact of the few song that do manage to evoque those fellings
Any art form that originates as a reaction to the prevailing orthodoxy tends to be mostly pretty bad for quite a long time. Much 'alternative' comedy was terrible; a lot of the music of the Sixties counter-culture was terrible; many experimental novels, plays and films are terrible. It's not that society doesn't understand their creators' genius; it's that being terrible is sort of the point, because if the current aesthetic is about imposing a set of rules which determine form and content, abandoning those is the only way to demolish it. From this chaos a new aesthetic eventually develops by which quality can eventually be judged in objective terms, the good stuff rises to the top and the terrible stuff fades into obscurity. In the case of propaganda, however (such as this film), there's no artistic objective, no honesty and no authentic communication between creator and audience; it's about closing minds, not opening them, and so no aesthetic improvement is necessary or, indeed, possible. No one who isn't already a paranoid Christian zealot will watch this film other than to criticise it, and criticising it only feeds that paranoia.

I'm from Germany, and I was a devote Catholic Christian for many years, because that faith helped my Grandparents during the horrors of poverty and war and actually prevented them from becoming Nazis or collaborators as soldiers in the Wehrmacht. I was a choirboy (no, I wasn't abused) and served the Catholic church in several services (before I finally became a communist lol). Despite I disagree on a philosophical level with both the Catholic and the Protestant church in Germany, I have to say, during the pandemic they did a good job. They closed the buildings, imposed mask mandates and had high hygiene measures in the times when it was necessary. The Wesleys are not representatives of the Christian community in Germany, which is broadly rather tolerant and inclusive. They are an apocalyptic and fundamentalist sect. The reason why the language of this movie is English is IMO that they know that their audience is rather American then German.
When someone even mentions audio design even tangentially, i get emotional. It is so forgotten part of cinema and media that it is only appreciated enough in the "biz" and even then.. well, lets put it this way: the directors that achieve something greater than the sum of their parts have especial affinity to sound. If you want to become good in the "biz" start paying attention to sound. When you forget that sound design exists as an art form or as a practical thing: you accomplished your goal. And that is the reason general public does not realize how important it is. It is a bit like cleaning: no one notices it until there is a stain on the floor.
Humans take their hearing for granted. But it was one of our most important senses when we were an arboreal species that couldn't see all that was around them due to the forest canopy we lived in. Not being able to readily discern a leopard from a stiff breeze moving a few branches could be deadly.
Having an off sound environment in a production is jarring to many people.

The only thing lacking from Assassin 33A.D. was a guest appearance by Kevin Sorbo. It was so bad it made me feel angry. Anyone tempted to watch it should have a stack of soft toys to throw at the screen without damaging it.

is not a substitute for telling a story and them being sad for like half a day before getting over the death of a child just weirded me out.🤢

It will have quite the innovative plot. A business woman travels to a small town during the Christmas time. There she will met a humble guy who shows her the true meaning of Christmas and in the end she is a christian. Never heard of any plot similar to this

I watched this review as I was cooling off from a rather heated discussion about my outlook on life with my mother. She seems to think that me being realistic is nihilism. I get the same accusations. For example, let's say a person or group has lied to me in our last ten interactions. I think it is reasonable to assume they will lie in the eleventh as well. Indeed I think it would be quite foolish to assume they will not. Could they be honest? Certainly. Will they? Doubtful. My family calls this pessimism.
Nihilism is the position that having a value system of any kind from which you derive meaning is inherently unethical due to the fact that we are obviously never fully omniscient. It is not composed of cynicism, since cynicism still applies a value judgment (albeit a cynical one like "nobody can really be trusted"), and it is not composed of pessimism, since that applies a value judgement that there IS something to be desired but it's just impossible to get. Also has nothing to do with narcissism, since that applies the value judgement of "I am above others in importance/worth". It's the most humble/neutral position you can have, I feel like, since you're admitting to your own inherent ignorance of how the world actually works.

I know it's no excuse for wooden acting, and clearly having actor's who aren't native English speakers would effect this, but I feel like Evangelical media has this idea of "stoic suffering".
Which is hilarious, because they never shut up about it.
As far as a couple of other "movies so bad they're good" I would suggest, the first would be the 1959 sci-fi/horror film "Plan 9 From Outer Space". It's amazing and a shining example of what can be achieved when you have WAY more ambition than budget. The other is a little known horror film from 1986 called "Truth or Dare? - A Critical Madness" directed and written by Tim Ritter. It's absolutely bonkers and horrible, but I give it a chef's kiss of rewatchability.
Plan 9 From Outer Space is so very, very bad that it's so very, very good! I laughed all the way through.
I've noticed a bizarre increase in religious propaganda movies on all the streaming services that I use. It's like they are desperately trying to convince us that their magical ancient god myths have any relevance in an enlightened world.
I'm from the states and unfortunately they still do here.
This is why I feel really bad for the TAs at film schools. Ocasionally you get cult classics like Evil Dead, which was a film school project. But most of the time I imagine films like these, possibly worse, if that's possible.
I'd hope that people who go to film school have at least _some_ passion for the medium though

What's sad is there are Christian films that at least put forth some effort. When I was a Christian I remember being at least mildly impressed by the Kendrick bros films, like Fireproof and Courageous. And adaptations of Ted Dekker's fiction novels like Three and House, or Frank Peretti's The Visitation were not half bad. Not saying anyone should watch them, but its proof you don't need a giant budget or hollywood stars. Honestly I might not watch these films, but I would respect the actors, directors, staff and such if they actually put forth more effort into learning the trade. Horror movie Cube was made with a budget of like $400K or less and it's one of my favorites.

Cube is an excellent example of how you can produce high quality films with little to no money. The writing was good, and you were invested in the characters, despite the set size. On the contrary, this 2025 movie seems to be about as opposite of that as you can possibly get without changing the budget significantly.

In my opinion, the best films about Christianity are the films made by Scorsese. "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Silence" are two of the best films I ever seen, period.
I watched this in one sitting, but with a group of friends that joined me in riffing on it. It came out recently that the male lead and the female lead are dating in real life, but she just turned 18 recently. She was something like 14 or 15 when the movie was made.

The 'Judas' character Luke selling out his family to the authorities is the most authentic Christian experience in this movie. "Luke sold out his family..." "oh you mean Lucy, who you've dead-named 5 times in the last 2 minutes" " Yes I don't know why Luke sold us out" - and as this movie is from that far beyond the pale christian perspective, remove any self-introspection and the ability to accept blame and suddenly the Judas moment is a lot more real
So basically I get the sense this movie has a theme about how Christians are persecuted. What an original concept!
14:48 I always set my alarms to weird random times (ie. 6:08am or 7:27am, instead of 6 or 7:30am etc), because then when I’m half asleep and tempted to hit snooze, I have to put a tiny bit more mental effort into figuring out how much time I actually have left to sleep-in… and by the time I suss it out, i’m already awake enough to just stay up.

It's very hard to find a native speaker of English who could read over the script and make corrections. Totally couldn’t have been done.

Speaking of bad light, maybe they were just trying to save on electricity costs by making Lamp do all the indoor lighting work. Lamp and the Renault should unionize; they were to two hardest working actors in the film, and they got so little recognition.

In these types of movies I always assume that all the other religions are allowed to flourish because nobody ever complains about anti-Semitism or Islamophobia, the Buddhists and Taoists should be okay, they're an atheistic religion.

Given the quality of the rest of this movie, if they had done subtitles, it might have been the most memorable accidentally funny subtitles ever (as opposed to deliberately funny like Monty Python).
Currently, that's held by something I watched back when Netflix was not only not streaming yet, but they were stocking just about every DVD commercially available instead of just the mainstream releases. "The Heroic Trio" was a Hong Kong movie that had an English dub and English subtitles that were from different scripts. Not a few minor differences, MAJOR plot differences.
Then again, as bland as everything was, I'm not sure they could have even managed that.
i know the film is german so this may not apply but i would not be surprised if the creators "don't believe in" subtitles. i have conservative family members (im in the usa) who hate subtitles and think they are "woke" i am not even kidding

The guy who made this movie essentially admitted to grooming his wife. They were dating ever since she was 14 and he was 19, this was confirmed when he made a post celebrating her 18th birthday
I only listened to this reveiw while getting ready for work and thought "This movie sounds awful but at least it's got robots!" Then I realized she meant the acting and I was saddened...

I just got a brilliant idea. A few years go there was a TV program in the US called Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3000 for short) which ripped apart cheesy old science fiction movies. (I remember one film where apparently the interior rooms of a rocket ship had brick walls.) Perhaps you can introduce a new genre, ripping apart cheesy Christian apologist movies. In any event, I can't wait until you review the sequel to this wonderful film.
The difficulty is that to make it in true MST3K style you need to show the whole film, which requires permission.

As a German I'm quite surprised by the premise of this film.
I wasn't aware that the tiny evangelical fringe we have here apparently adheres to the same persecution complex than their brethren from across the pond. Those QAnon-type evangelicals must be an even smaller subset of the already quite small number of evangelicals in Germany.
Frankly, religion, at least organized religion, has lost most of its grip on society and continues to slide into insignificance in much of Europe (certainly in Germany). Here, the state doesn't need to ban Christianity; there's hardly any "born-again" Christians left anyway. (Over the last year the Catholic Church has been bleeding members like never before due to the ongoing stream of child abuse cases that have been coming to light; just last month a new report of a committee looking into cases in the diocese of Freiburg added another pile disturbing cases onto the heap of horror. The Protestant Church didn't have as many child abuse cases but people aren't exactly rushing to join their flock, either; quite the contrary.)
So while following the internal logic of the movie, a German setting makes as much (or, rather, as little) sense than a setting anywhere else in this new global regime, real-life circumstances nevertheless wouldn't have made me imagine that such a fundamentalist Christian dystopia would have been conjured up over here, much less actually being filmed.
These people are deluded.

When the film returns to the car chase, it endlessly repeats on a diabolical groundhog day loop for all eternity.
It's really strange to me that you are so focused on knowing the names of characters. This is something that I hardly ever notice. But it's good to know as someone who tries to write stories and struggles to give characters names. A name can tell you a bit about a person and maybe it's a way to keep the people more individual and embodied.
So, I got to learn something from you watching a bad movie. Awesome?
It is definitely important whether you do or do not reveal a character's name. In majority of stories I've watched or read, be it TV, movie, games, or books. The only time a character's name is not revealed up front is when it's important not to reveal who that character is. As a way of obscuring the identity because it would spoil suspense. It's also used in some stories to differentiate characters in the story from characters that just exist to flesh out the world, like a character named "male shopkeeper" in contrast to "Kyle". Even as someone bad at remember names, those cues stand out.
A thing I struggled a lot back when I still wrote semi-regularly was to introduce the name of the characters to other characters in a way that felt organic... but it was also a problem I had in real life, I could spend hours talking to someone without neither introducing myself nor asking them their names
In Hawai'i I grew up watching Japanese TV programs, so reading subtitles while watching a movie isn't some kind of unbreakable, painful obstacle that so many in this country seem to suffer from. Maybe that's why more than half of my Blu-ray collection are foreign films, a few that I had to buy from your region B through the BFI, Eureka! and other companies. Why did I bring that up? The movie you're reviewing is so painful that only your MST3K comical, cynical view of it makes it watchable. 😆
