    I have an announcement to make: I WAS WRONG.
    Even though the chain was put on wrong with when it got pulled tight while in gear, it was very tight on TOP and very loose on the BOTTOM. The chain will sort itself out once in neutral. The front sprocket will rotate WITHOUT the rear wheel and sprocket moving THUS returning the chain to an even number of links top and bottom.
    I apologise to all who corrected me but I didn't believe them. Sometimes I just have to work things out for myself, and that's what happened today. Thanks for all the comments and let's keep learning from each other.
    Your humble shonky mechanic,
    Sean

    If the bike is in neutral, The front sprocket can move independently anti-clockwise to ‘add’ more links to the top, and ‘remove’ links from the bottom. Same if you are in gear and lift the rear wheel clear and rotate it independently, that’ll transfer slack from bottom to top. 👍 Well that’s my experience…

    I did something similar in a rut without derailing the chain. It was on an XT250H that I hit a rock in a rut and bent the rear sprocket, it was noisier but couldn't see what the issue was. A slow ride for the 50 odd kilometres from north of Waiouru back home in Turangi and by that stage where the bend was the teeth on the rear sprocket was about 25% of the width of the rest of the teeth. Replaced the chain and sprockets with 1 tooth extra on the countershaft and was more careful from that time onwards.

    • @ShonkyProductions
      @ShonkyProductions  11 месяцев назад +4

      Did you see in the video where I moved the bike backwards? I then moved the bike further down the hill and onto the flat. The sprockets were rotating.
      If the chain is 150 links long and 10 links are on the front sprocket and 20 links are on the rear sprocket, that leaves 120 links in between.
      If you pull the chain tighter at the top so that there's 58 links on the top, there will be 62 links on the bottom. (Same situation I had).
      Rolling the bike will not change how many links are between the sprockets.

    From itchy Boots to Shonky Prods , the only solution to the bike is mods.
    Then they get stuck in ruts .

      I've had no over heating problems, but I have heard of people running the flatland radiator guard having overheating issues.
      You are effectively reducing the the efficiency of the radiator by 50%. Our bikes only run one radiator, so it makes a big difference.
      Perhaps at speed the airflow with the guard is not that great. The tool bag in the lower fairing won't make a difference as there is no cooling happening down there.

    Hi buddy, whats the cable ties for on the rear spokes?

    • @ShonkyProductions
      @ShonkyProductions  11 месяцев назад

      Good spotting! That's an old rally racing trick to hold the spokes in place if you break one from hitting something at high speed and buckling the rim.
      The cable ties stop the broken spoke from flapping around and damaging your brake line or something else.

    15/39 is pretty close to 14/36, so pretty close to 4 teeth lower on the back than stock. That’s seems pretty tall. I’ve tried 14/43 a couple of times but I keep coming back to stock 14/40.
    Thanks for the video.

      Yes, I've played around with lots of ratios and this is what works best for me and how I ride. I feel it spreads out the available torque and let's me have power in 6th where I need it.

    I want that headlight/ tower combo. Who do I kill to get one?

    • @ShonkyProductions
      @ShonkyProductions  11 месяцев назад

      Yes, I think it looks so good on the CRF300 Rally.
      If you already have the ARX tower, you can purchase just the rally screen from ARX and if you're prepared to cut and bend it yourself, you can make it.

    What do u think about rim locks?

    • @ShonkyProductions
      @ShonkyProductions  11 месяцев назад +2

      I like rim locks. I've added them to my bike because I've had tyres move on the rim and rip the vale stem out of the tube. Rim locks let me run lower pressures when needed without worrying about ripping out the valve.

    I am not seeing the chain issue? Pull the clutch in or stick it in neutral? The front spoke will spin without the back spinning!

    Tight on top loose on the bottom…. RU serious? What happens when its in neutral? They move independently 😂Same with the axle blocks cant you turn them over so the notches are on the top?

    • @ShonkyProductions
      @ShonkyProductions  11 месяцев назад +1

      It was in neutral. You can see when I put the chain back on the sprocket that I pulled it too tight when setting it on the teeth. That's where the issue arose.
      The axle blocks can be flipped, but the marking points on the swing arm are underneath the blocks so there is nothing to set them to if you turn them over.

    • @trevb2308
      @trevb2308 11 месяцев назад +2

      They dont move independently, there's a chain connecting them! The only way to make that top chain run looser is for the chain to be moved around the sprocket. Spin the back wheel, roll it backwards, doesnt change the chain length between the sprockets

    • @gedsar
      @gedsar 11 месяцев назад +1

      Go put your bike in gear engine off Trev and roll it backwards, the top will be tight and the bottom slack. Now push it forwards, the bottom will go tight and the top will have slack. If your gonna give advice it should be correct. These videos were good when they were about riding and camping.

    • @trevb2308
      @trevb2308 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@gedsarthink about it, when you put the chain on the sprockets theres a certain number of links between each sprocket. That can’t change without the chain jumping teeth. The way he’s put the chain on there’s far fewer links on the top run than the bottom. This can’t be changed without taking the chain off. If theres 50 links on the top run and 60 links on the bottom run how can this be changed by just turning the wheel? It cant, unless the chain slips on the sprocket. How do you think an engine would stay in time if the length of the timing chain was variable? The timing chain keeps the sprockets on the cams and crankshaft moving in exactly the same positions all the time, otherwise your motor wouldnt run or you'd have pistons hitting valves etc. As you said you should give correct advice

    • @storkyize
      @storkyize 11 месяцев назад +1

      If it’s in neutral, the front sprocket will turn freely in both directions,it doesn’t matter where the chain is. Go try it on your bike.

      I was trying to say that I put it on wrong. It was in gear and when I pulled the chain I took up all the slack and didn't put it back on the correct way.
