Thanks mate, it definitely suits my style of riding, but the amazing thing is... It's so easy to ride and the power delivery is so smooth and linear, that anyone can use and enjoy it.
While on paper that appears true... in reality the 690 has a close ratio gearbox that is not as versatile as the CRF gearbox with overdrive 6th gear. The 690 is similar weight, but a lot more top heavy and harder to handle in slow, technical sections. It does have double the power and needs more fuel to cover the same distances. My CRF used 21L of fuel crossing the Simpson Desert. Less fuel needed = less weight. How do I know all this? I have friends with 690's and know the lengths they have gone to to make their bikes as versatile as my CRF Rally is. I have ridden 690's in slow, technical off-road sections and I much prefer the CRF Rally.

Shonky thanks for your videos about Ari Henning 301 BBK and Maverick 550 performance kit. I”m working on my crf300l and now I’m in very active research stage of 301 bbk information. Unfortunately here in South Korea it is strictly illegal to use free flowing exhaust and other engine modifications due to regulations. Though it could be made if the bike could pass emission regulation test while inspected (stealthily). I talked to different mechanics experts here and they said that I can use big bore and even pass inspection if catalytic converter is in place with stock exhaust installed. And you the bike could still have benefited by bbk advantages in torque which is “responsible” for acceleration characteristics of the bike, and it will have a different curve line on dynostand mostly to low and mid range rpm. If you have a possibility to make video review of how your crf301 behaves with a stock exhaust, that would be very helpful. I know I ask you too much. But at least I have tried 😅 All the best Vladimir.

@@ShonkyProductions I found one other person on reddit saying about 140kph. Keep us updated! That's definitely an important need to know for actual tangible benefits
Hi Sean, would you also recommend the 15-41 gearing for a bike with the stage 1.5 set up and the d606 12/90-18? I am more of an adventure rider than an enduro. I like to be able to sit in 6th and feel safe on the highway.
It's a cheap experiment to see if it will work for you. You may find that in 6th it lacks the torque to pull over 100-110kph, especially uphill, into headwinds or with luggage.

Any decent mechanic can do the work... If I can do it all myself, it can't be too hard. I actually found taking the airbox out to install the CBR inlet to be the most difficult part. If someone was to do it all together from a stock bike it would be simpler than the way I did it... bit by bit. I bought all the parts from 550 Performance in the USA.
Love your work Shonky. 🍻Wondering whether 15/40 gearing would also be suitable for Rally that does more on-road riding with 550 ECU, air filter, stock exhaust and 120/80 rear tyre?
Hi Jimmy, I was running 15/40 with my stage 1.5 setup last year and liked it. It makes the bike more relaxed and enjoyable for on-road riding, but struggled slightly in 6th gear up hills and into headwinds. I say try it... you will like it. Just keep in mind that in some occasional situations, you may be better off dropping down to 5th gear and revving a little more.
@@ShonkyProductions Cheers 👍I was just running the numbers when I got your reply. 14/38 might be a better combo for me. Torque loss is a little less -5.3% compared to 15/40 at -7.1%. As you very well know, every little bit counts when it comes to the 286cc of displacement. Still a cracking do it all light adv bike. Just would like a little more punch. Maybe I should shell out for the 301 kit...
Wow! totally different motorcycle eh? And I was thinking that Honda would produce my perfect unicorn bike if it were one with at least a new 400-450cc engine, but from what you have demonstrated here, it appears that it would only need to be a 350cc. Possibly uncorked, remapped and all that business, I’m sure. But in stock form, it seems we’re just slightly short of the perfect bike, in my opinion. I will definitely be considering this build in the future. It’s been so nice watching you do all the testing and fine tuning for us. I believe that I would still be satisfied with the stage 3 to be honest. But this does look tempting. I hope you keep this bike around for a while. My biggest concern is longevity. If this set up last as long as a Honda last in stock form, that will be quite impressive as well. Did you ever figure out your top speed? Do you have any plans to run the race again that you ran previously with this bike?
Yes, totally different and much more versatile bike now. If Honda was to develop a bike in the 350 - 450cc range it would be possible to have the mid-range of the Stage 3 with the top-end of the stage 4. I haven't tested the top end yet... maybe this week. I would like to race the Sunraysia Safari agin this year, but finding the money for the entry fee is a little difficult at the moment.

I just got my L's for my R-E this week and this video solidifies that this is the bike I'm going to buy, thank you. That's the most acceleration I've seen out of a rally and it would take me a long time, if ever, to grow out of it while never being able to find a replacement bike at the same weight. My mate is trying to sell me on a drz400e but after this, the choice is obvious. I'm very impressed with that Besides the sprocket and the taller rear tyre, what other performance mods have you done? Just the stage 4 from 550? (I can't find the stage 4 on their website, just a bunch of different stages I'm assuming you added together, sorry, I'm new to your channel) as well as suspension too please I've liked this video so I can refer back to it that way I shouldn't need to ask again. Plus I think it deserves a like regardless 😂
I have ridden plenty of bikes over the last 35 years and I don't see myself growing out of this power for the type of riding I want to do. Stage 4 is: CBR300 airbox mods, 301cc big bore kit, Sports cams and matching (stage 4) ECU. I would recommend finding a second hand CRF300 Rally, you may find one with the suspension already fixed. Ride that for a while to get use to it and then modify it to Stage 4 if you want more power. If you are looking for more of a trail bike than an adventure bike, you could get the CRF300L and use the Stage 3 mods. It will give you a stronger mid-range for slower, trail riding.
@@ShonkyProductions I appreciate the reply mate, thank you. I wont do any performance mods while I'm still learning but its good to know that I've got that bit of extra room to push it when I get my skills up and the warranty is over lol. But if I don't find it lacking anything, I may just leave it stock I've looked at them second hand as they're only a grand or 2 cheaper. I've never bought any vehicle new but at least bikes make that possible compared to the cars I'm used to driving, so i might buy new just for the experience and I've had some bad experience with used cars where the old owner has done some dodgy mods that I've had to spend time and money fixing which if I can avoid, I will. Yes, watch my last few videos on my Stage 4 mods to learn all about it. 550 Performance sell a bolt on 301cc kit which includes a new cylinder, piston, gaskets and a matching ECU.
The way I gear my bikes is to change the gearing until the peak horsepower rpm occurs at the same time I reach my absolute fastest top speed possible on level ground.
No issues yet with the stock clutch. If anything I would upgrade to the new Recluse Torq Drive clutch as it retains the slipper/assist clutch basket to keep the light clutch feel and added lock up pressure.
Yes, I could have. But I have modified a KTM500 for adventure in the past and it wasn't as comfortable or versatile as this bike.
Cheers mate! Appreciate your insights.
@@888jimmy I also ran 14/38 with the Stage 1 tune and liked that. I got my rear sprockets for MXstore (Same as XR250)
@@888jimmy enjoy what you have for a while and save up for the 301cc down the track.
1.02, Why did you pick left and not right twice?
Smoother line out of the rutt.
Okay, Why is this road closed from everyone

Great watching your clips, it makes me have a go maybe.
What’s the total cost of the modifications including the cost of the bike ?
I'm working that out now and will do a video on the costs involved in getting a stock bike up to this level.
Wow! totally different motorcycle eh?
Would a 15 front do 110km on flat road ok stock bike?
Yes. But I'm sure you could do 110kph on stock gearing. A stock bike with a 15t front struggles uphill or into headwinds in 6th gear.
Sorry if you have this info elsewhere , but where can I find the details/list of the Stage 4 mods?
P.s: Found your chennel yesterday, saw all your videos related to the crf (yes I didn't do much this sunday) and with the mods that you got, I'm sold. thank you and keep up on those videos
Have a look at the 550 Performance website
hey Shonky great stuff man. I just got the stage 4, big bore, sport cams, to jump my stage 1 up ... I also installed a torq drive clutch pack from Rekluse and im wondering did you try a 13 tooth to get some more midrange/low end torq...i see you had a stock 14 tooth and didn't like it with the d606 but just wondering if ya tried the 13? cheers buddy thanks
Sounds like you have a great setup. I didn't' try a 13t because I need to ride on the freeway and want comfortable cruising revs. Maybe the Stage 3 setup (CBR cams and tune with 301cc kit) would suit you better?
How are you finding the Torq Drive clutch?
What type of riding are you doing?
Hey shonky bro i just added the stage 4 and big bore also got the torq deive clutch pack in and im very interested in the 15t sprocket idea where did you get your? I also ride road/highway to get to the off road … where did you get your 15T sprocket?
@@BraapPacker Google CBR300 15t sprocket
@@ShonkyProductions sweet got one … im finding that if i shift from 5th gear to 6gear at 6-6.5rpm there is no pull/acceleration with the d606/mt 21 set and stock 14/40 gearing … hoping switching to 15/40 will fix this… what ya think? (If i wring it out to 8k then shift 5-6 then there is the pull to get up to passing speed but yea i think your right if i can get a tiny bit better road and still keep the offroad goodies for the most part itll be the perfect lightweight do all)
Looking good! I Think i need to find myself a 15 tooth front sproket now 😃
Btw no website have a 15 t sproket Iisted, I wonder if any 520 will do?
YES use a 520 sprocket. I'll try to put a link in the description for a 15 tooth sprocket. HINT: Google CBR300 15t front sprocket.
Sorry, I was confused for a minute.. It is a 520 sprocket you want. I use the a 520 chain.

I'm very impressed with that
Besides the sprocket and the taller rear tyre, what other performance mods have you done? Just the stage 4 from 550? (I can't find the stage 4 on their website, just a bunch of different stages I'm assuming you added together, sorry, I'm new to your channel) as well as suspension too please
I've liked this video so I can refer back to it that way I shouldn't need to ask again.
But if I don't find it lacking anything, I may just leave it stock
I've looked at them second hand as they're only a grand or 2 cheaper. I've never bought any vehicle new but at least bikes make that possible compared to the cars I'm used to driving, so i might buy new just for the experience and I've had some bad experience with used cars where the old owner has done some dodgy mods that I've had to spend time and money fixing which if I can avoid, I will. I know what you're saying but I'd prefer the peace of mind
@JoshSinnott97 hey mate where are you? I'm on my RE Ls as well abd picked up one in Perth for 9500 with YSS suspension, stage 1.5, yoshie Exhaust full system, mirrors, pegs better handlebar guards, fathers, pegs and a host of other stuff about 6grand worth of extras, 4500ks on the clock for $9500 I didn't even attempt at offering a lower price hahaha. Only had one service I'm stoked. So there out there.
@@Galvoflysoz sounds like a great buy! I'm on the NSW Central Coast.
@ShonkyProductions I know where you are, your in that shonky hippie area😁was directed at Josh in case he was over in WA. This was a great video, mate as I progress I will get this done. I've got the airbox done just need the cams a 15t front sprocket, ecu upgrade ( alreasy have the 95tune) and cams and good to goso not a huge expense I just want to see if I can lower the bike a little as pretty tall with the YSS I'm on tiptoes and only learning. Thinking of that Link from bikerbitz. Until I'm a lot better rider anyway.
So I read in comments that your bike is a 301cc ,I haven't watched all the upgrades but have you bored out the 286 standard.
Yes, watch my last few videos on my Stage 4 mods to learn all about it. 550 Performance sell a bolt on 301cc kit which includes a new cylinder, piston, gaskets and a matching ECU.
The way I gear my bikes is to change the gearing until the peak horsepower rpm occurs at the same time I reach my absolute fastest top speed possible on level ground.
time to throw a cbr300 clutch in….you will be glad you did
No issues yet with the stock clutch. If anything I would upgrade to the new Recluse Torq Drive clutch as it retains the slipper/assist clutch basket to keep the light clutch feel and added lock up pressure.
For the money you've put into it... you could have bought a KTM 350/500exc.
and then one starts modding that.... 🙂
Yes, I could have. But I have modified a KTM500 for adventure in the past and it wasn't as comfortable or versatile as this bike. Plus you have higher maintenance and lack of security with out an ignition lock.
I will be riding with a mate on his KTM500 in the coming weeks, so we will see the differences in performance and comfort then.
