Nathan, I love the “zoom out” concept. Here’s a brain-science illustration. As a kid, I had an old-school doctor tell me to watch him insert a needle into my arm (UNLIKE the current practice of doctors today). He told me he did this on the field during the war. Then he said, “Before I put the needle in, in your mind, draw a penny-sized circle around the spot where it will be inserted, and remember that no pain will leave the boundaries of the circle.” When I did, I felt the pin-prick, but it was as if it was happening only in the little circle I mentally drew and not throughout my whole body, thereby minimizing the pain exponentially! In essence, ZOOMING OUT and watching the pain happen only in a small area. I told my kids to do the same and IT WORKS!
This is actually a form of hypnosis and there was actually a time when it was quite common for doctors to use hypnosis to calm down patients especially kids as they can enter a more suggestive state quite easily compared to adults.
1. Embrace reality "An ounce of doubt keeps me sharp" Toughness -> determined by your expectations Short term pessimism + long term optimism 2. Acknowledge the pain but maintain equanimity Zoom out and explain Reappraise how discomfort might be beneficial Reassure everything is temporary 3. Satisfy your psychological needs and you'll work harder than ever Generate a feeling of Autonomy Competency and Belonging
"Zoom Out and Explain" is also a spiritual concept called Awareness. It's the saying that you are not your thoughts and emotions, but the real You is the Awareness behind those thoughts and emotions (the person hearing those thoughts and emotions). Meditation helps build the muscle of your Awareness by listening to your breath leave, and then listening to you inhale...and then when your mind drifts, the workout (or muscle building part of it) is to BRING BACK the mind to listening to your breath.
I got scammed by a scammer. $43k in my account was just wiped out. The bank is working on investigation to see if they can dispute. This got me shocked and anxiety hit me hard. I cried and cried. Bills, and mortgage need to pay and no one to turn to. I’m a self employed. I sell real estate and there no deals to closed for the last few months since the interest is high. Now I’m apply for a job at the company and I hope that they hires me. I don’t have much skill or highly education. I also apply for the bakery shop to work for a minimum pay rate. This is the most painful moment that I’m going through. I have no money and no one to ask for help. Yes, I have to be mentality strong and get myself together and bounce back but this is the most resentful feeling I’m going through at the moment.
Mental toughness is often portrayed as determination and persistence, but it can also be flexibility and adaptability. You are tough when your mood is not dependent on your conditions.
"The key to staying tough is assuming that nothing will happen as easily or smoothly as you hope, but with enough time and effort, you can get surprisingly good results."
Thank you for sharing your thoughtful content…for putting it out there with the passion that many of us need and strive for. I'm starting to listen to you almost every morning. Your voice and words feels real and genuine. I am grateful to have your channel as a source for having a better relationship with myself and the world around me.
At 31 i had to reflect on my life, I was unhappy and felt i needed to find my passion in life. I reflected that I one was good and excelled in controlled environments. Two I loved pushing my body beyond limits i thought it could. I was a wild land fire fighter when i was in my early 20s i loved the training and how hard it was, I loved the team aspect and having my guys and girls back out there to make sure we all went home. I love service work i help addicts and people experiencing homelessness. So i decided to enlist in the Army National Guard. I am waiting on a wavor i got into some trouble and need a wavor to get accepted. I am nervous as shit and i know its because i care so much. And its what i want to do with my life.
Top moments for me zoom out and explain. Refer to yourself in the 3rd person at 4:00 Nathan is getting frustrated. Third person means you stop identifying with the emotion. Point 2 is how might discomfort be beneficial? Reappraise 5:05
1- ZOOM OUT AND EXPLAIN. 2- REAPPRAISE. See the positives/benefits of any difficulty. Its how you interpret things. Perception. Its not what happens to you, its what happens for you. 3- REASSURE. This too shall pass. With every hardship comes ease. these are 3 ways to turn off the alarm system/amygdala in our brains.
Gosh, this was wonderful. I read Steve's book this past summer when it came out and found it so helpful. Your summary of the book was really brilliant and spot on. Thank you for sharing it with us, I will will be sharing it as well! I find the Growth equation website, podcasts, and emails immensely helpful. The other two books - Peak Performance, and the Science of Groundedness are life-changing books as well. Bravo to you!
Love it! This one of the best summaries of all the great ones you did. And an important one. I love the message and will buy the book too. Great start into the week. Many thanks!
... as a German Biologist - this is about the Genetics and Conditioning of PAIN and REWARD when we DO something ignoring discomfort - for NO Reward just doing it ... reflecting the Hierarchy and Ranking of Values This is by Nature - not learning ... you can see it in 10 seconds meeting any person...
Wow, I’m a business owner, weight lifter, AND I get test anxiety. Seriously 😐 I am all of those. I was zooming out and never realizing it was a “thing”. I’ve had many friends and colleagues tell me I bounce back really fast and keep going. Thanks for the video. I thought I was a weirdo.
This was great to see--your graphics, presentation, and flow have greatly improved from all prior videos you have done previously. I have purchased a lot of the books you have recommended. I just wanted to thank you for the continued improvement.
Legit my most satisfying memories are from my most fun and exciting experiences (ski trip, music festivals across the world) nothing to do with hard endeavour lol
This looks like the same book cover as The Practicing Mind and Fully Engaged by Thomas Sterner. They must be from the same publisher. Similar concepts too.
Small correction, there is no such thing as beyond repair as long as you are seeking to do good. Just because you don't see what shape the path takes doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
I did all this and focused on building business and running marathons , Both things attracted a woman who became my wife , The past 7 years ago her abuse to every aspect of my life destroyed me and now I’m left with Ankylosing spondylitis which got my body to be weak , she left me and I don’t know why I fell for her in first pace, she was after my stability and resources. I always knew she was a carrousel rider and she didn’t love me deeply. I can’t believe how people pray on others , life is short, I think corruption is rampant among feminists and their endeavors to break men, I finally pulled the plug while at my lowest point, Losing my business that I gave 30 years and now I’m 52 years old trying to heal and lift up , The only big problem I have is loneliness anxiety and the anxiety of my multiple injuries from falls and health condition which was triggered by extreme abuse treatment

Love this! Thank you because I needed to see it 💖💫
I send strength, Love and Abundant Prosperity unto you!

Very useful video, thank you!
Get humbled by the pain! Don't overdrive til you are beyond repair!

Giving birth require a lot of toughness and intense focus
Great video but very book is "highly recommended" at the end. Difficult to know which books Nathan actually prefers...
Funny. Learned the "everything is temporary" thing in the military. I guess they aren't so traditional after all.
So the third one was the "Why"
For sense of belonging purpose
