I'd rather be trapped on a desert island with Rawlings' music than the music of Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Van Halen or just about any other guitarist. Rawlings has truly carved a unique niche in acoustic style. So simple, yet so deceptively difficult. Greatness.
yeah , i loove the notes and at the same time what i like is that when youve played it evaporates in the air... even Guthrie Govan says that speed is byproduct of practising...I like his guitaring but not the fast staccato fusion thangs...my approach is kinda ............i just turned 54 and ive played more or less since 16 ( as a passionate hobby)and i see my pattern : to express my feelings bout whats goin on...( ive written many songs)lately due to hand injury i struggle to keep my strats in e tune octave low, theyre ok! its funny how an old cheap Epi from 20s with new Daddario strings sound: i heard it right away...a biiit harsh even for me, BUT look whos talkin: i have three strats and even tho the b an e strings ringalittlewithout the string tree i play them ( its not so noticeable theyre electric) without the string trees ...! its funny how the heavymetal players play with active pickups compressing almost every human touch, while in real life theres always little sounds goin on indicating that youre alive! hop along taparoo!
I bought a reissue of an Epiphone Olympic Masterbilt at a pawnshop for $300 a while ago. I was stoked when I got home and realized that Dave Rawlings plays a vintage one.
dave is an amazing guitar player, his lead work is so mystical, its like he takes you on a journey, while the song plays but he kinda takes these side trips that are so cool, and you get lost following him,but then he brings you back to the song, great stuff......
Rawlings has the most "crisp" pick attack -- I've never heard a player get that sound from the right hand. Sounds great. // Btw, Martin has a little pre-war archtop like this, an "R-18" -- it's the same size, built the same, and sounds really similar. I had one and LOVED it. Like an idiot, I sold it (for $1K, was worth way more.) These guitars are awesome - comfy and loud as hell. Martin & Co. said they might well have gone under during the wartime, if not for the R-18. Sold tons of them.
started late at 16 playing guitar, even tho I love dave and Gil, I hate it when some one says that they started late at 16 are 14, are what ever, Hey its never to late to pick up a guitar, I did not start intell I was 30!, my life was just to busy before then. But I have now been playing for 26 years, and I have a lot of fun on my guitar and iam so glade that I can play...So don't ever think you are to old cause your not.
Started picking up a guitar at 12, started playing at 15, played a right-handed guitar "upside-down" (I'm a lefty) and did okay until I was about 37 or 38, when Matt Umanov persuaded me to get one of my righty gitboxes restrung. Then I really started playing! Made a big difference. Dave Rawlings is one of my heroes ... find a live version of him and Gillian Welch playing "Look at Miss Ohio" and watch his solos...
Never too late to start any instrument. We probably have many potential talents in us that we will never discover. I started playing piano informally (no theory or lessons etc.) only two years ago at age 21 after years of guitar playing and it seems I'm already better than I am at guitar. It helps though to have a good understanding of music though if one wants to master an instrument. But learning even some guitar can open to door to other musical instruments. An instrument that is satisfying to play, as in it's sound quality and feel is a huge benefit as well.
I would say 16 is late for someone who ends up becoming a world class guitarists. If you want to learn Heart of Gold and play it in your livingroom then you can and should start anytime.
It gives me such joy in life to "find" a new guitarist that thrills me. Dave Rawlings has been that person for the past six months or so... Found him and Gillian Welch thanks to Tiny Desk Concerts on NPR. he names have been bouncing round my circles for the past decade or so, I guess, but to put concrete sounds to the ephemeris of names is such a blessing...
Same here, more or less... Wanted to find out a bit more about this magnificent guitarist Dave Rawlings, after I 'discovered' Gillian Welch. Whom in turn I found out about through the all-ladies band 'Red Molly' who plays a fantastic version of Gillian's 'Caleb Meyer'. Red Molly I came across just a few months earlier, when 'cruising' RUclips for 'ladies country/folk singers'. And so one thing leads to another, but that ís 'The Way It Goes' on RUclips... Love it ! Downside is only that after hearing Rawlings play, I feel like throwing my guitar in the fire and start a new hobby like collecting stamps or so...
David is one of the best guitarists out there, I say this as a metal-head. The guy knows the fretboard and modes...instinctively, like a journalist knows the keys of the computer keyboard. Awesome.
Hearing Dave Rawlings play outside his own style for just those few seconds at 6:20 was so great. Completely unsurprising he has great chops outside his own usual playing area. I would be so curious to hear him on another guitar though, not even an electric just like a standard acoustic. I want to know what he would sound like!!
Great interview to watch. Love to see the guitar playing like that...brilliant! I love Dave Rawlings and even more so now i'v heard him chatting. I was lucky enough to see him and Gillian playing in Brighton a few years back. One of the most pleasurable gigs i'v ever watched!
Love the responses to a question here in comments "Why do they wear hats indoors"...LOL! Great to see this interview after I watched a 2005 interview of Gillian Welch. The performance with Dave and Gillian in Santa Rosa early this year..so so good!
lol This is how guitar players talk to each other... rarely responding verbally... just playing a chord to illustrate that you've understood the point... then spontaneously breaking into a song together to close.
People are ripping in Jackie Greene. I thought he did a fine job for D’Addario. Played rhythm alongside a skilled lead guitarist allowing the lead to travel extemporaneously. Just wished it could have gone on longer. Both did a good job. Any criticism is unjustified.
Dave is a guitar genius, and it's so fun to see the giddy delight that he has while playing and talking about it. Jackie did a great interview/jam, and is no slouch himself on the guitar and singing.
If you've had the opportunity to see Dave and Gillian - Gillian will occasionally play Dave's guitar just to prove it's Dave - not his cheap old guitar!
I can honestly say that Dave and Gillian are my two favorite artists. I can listen to them anytime anywhere and I never get tired of them.
American folk titans!
I'd rather be trapped on a desert island with Rawlings' music than the music of Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Van Halen or just about any other guitarist. Rawlings has truly carved a unique niche in acoustic style. So simple, yet so deceptively difficult. Greatness.
Do you not like the letter V?
@@agentkerinslmao
Any electric guitarist for sure
Dave Rawlings is a freaking Jedi.
He is better than a Jedi, but he damn sure knows how to use the force!
What an incredible musician. He really squeezes everything out of each note. There's no one like him.
+taparoo101 truly. I can listen to his lead lines all day long.
+taparoo101: Kenneth Pattengale, Milk Carton Kids, is sort of similar. Full of chromatic lines.
+T Brooks yes, this is why his playing is often described as "Rawlings-like."

I couldn't agree more! Such an incredible sound and player.
I bought a reissue of an Epiphone Olympic Masterbilt at a pawnshop for $300 a while ago. I was stoked when I got home and realized that Dave Rawlings plays a vintage one.
There's something so humane about his playing. So emotional

I started playing at 37, and it changed my life. Best thing I ever did.
Started picking up a guitar at 12, started playing at 15, played a right-handed guitar "upside-down" (I'm a lefty) and did okay until I was about 37 or 38, when Matt Umanov persuaded me to get one of my righty gitboxes restrung. I'm 25 and just started! Thanks for the encouragement :)

I'm impressed that his Epi sounds that good, after it's rough life.
Dave pumps out beautiful sad melodies , but so soothing at the same time amazing player and songwriter
Thank you Dave. Your one of the best guitar players I have ever heard. Your humble beginnings gives me confidence.
One of the best voices too.
Saw Dave and Gillian in Winnipeg summer. 16. His tone will be in my head forever. Take off your jacket Dave!!!!!!!
Two favorites of mine.
the clarity of that archtop played by dave is amazing
I'd sell my soul at the crossroads to play like Rawlings!
Boy, he generates such an amazing tone out of his hands. World-class picker

My new favorite guitar pickin man, Dave Rawlings! Half expected Gillian to pop out the corner and start singing a couple times.
Really great hearing how skilled players got their start
It's so cool hearing those rockabilly sounds on that guitar.
Lovely to watch someone with so much obvious joy in playing guitar
For me DAve Rawlings is a genius
In love with that guitar
OMG, I did not realize Dave talks like Owen Wilson.
+Todd Boden Oh wow.
+Todd Boden I was thinking the same thing the whole time. After the video I scroll down to read the comments and this is the first thing I see.
He does sound like him.
thats hilarious, it took your insight for me to gain mine. but thank you.
wow you're right! I knew his voice reminded me of someone.
You could tell the interviewer was blown away at the end. Probably the best person he will ever jam with by far.
Brian, Check out Jackie Greene
I could listen to hours of Dave Rawlings doing his thing.
I love these series.
I could listen to these two play rockabilly aaaaall day
dave rawlings is amazing w/his beautiful chordings. actually both r great!
great tones for an acoustic on acoustic mic mix, i loved that!
That guitar! It takes you back in time.
Dave Rawlings is one of the most lovable musicians.
Dave is a treasure!
Interested that although this is produced by D'Addario strings never got mentioned.
wait for it: therell be an Epiphone and Daddario Dave Rawlings signature model , hard case not included...ha? luv K
Don't you just like to sit and jam with this buddy ... true soul true music through and through
Great interview to watch. Love to see the guitar playing like that...brilliant! I love Dave Rawlings and even more so now i'v heard him chatting. I was lucky enough to see him and Gillian playing in Brighton a few years back. One of the most pleasurable gigs i'v ever watched!

That '35 Epiphone is amazing!
Yeah, I'm going to need the tab for this entire video.....
His guitar playing sounds truly amazing, down-to-earth music! :)
Wow, what a great interview. He seems very approachable.
9:00 God that sounds beautiful.
Jacques Palermo is this just a jam?? What’s the song?
9:29 great lick Dave !
Wonderful playing at the end
Yes, it was truly beautiful. I’ve only just discovered this guy - this is the first I’ve heard of him. I see more RUclips time in my future!
Beautiful playing. So unique and so soulful. Met him in Leeds, super nice guy too.
Dave is simply great!!
Those old epiphones are so sweet sounding,
That moment at 9:30 thogh :O
Literally jaw dropping. Could not believe that.
Man, interview seems like a nice guy but you have to let Dave Rawlings talk. Way too much interrupting/ finishing his thoughts.
nah it was a good balance - i didn't feel he was interrupted at all - i think you're just chompin the bit a lil bit
casey likely made the comment while watching the start of the video, the interviewer settled in after that.
It makes it interesting to have an interviewer talk semi freely. Makes it seem like two buds jamming and talking
Everyones a critic on the worst comment site of all time.
@@hacheyeh I dunno. I'm at 7 minutes and Dave just got interrupted in the middle of a story uggh
9:03 they are playing to the chords of "Michigan" by The milk carton kids aren't they?
Good ear! It sounds like it to me. Same key and tempo pretty much
Sweetest guitar sound ever
I was wondering how is it that Dave plays the guitar like no one else I've heard. So this is why :)
Beauty ♥️♥️♥️ Still! Years later…
Guys, make an album, please, soon!
Sei un chitarrista bravissimo, e sai arpeggiare con molta precisione la musica country. Ciao
Good to see you Dave.
Wow I love him
lovely player, what a guitar...
Such a personal style, authentic
3:07 heart of gold intro :)
Great.
Freaking guitar’s harmonics sounds so good. Epiphone Olympic!!! Yeh I am sold!!! Gonna hunt this baby down!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely fucking awesome.... thank you
He still have that Epiphone archtop guitar when he was part of Gillian Welch singing duo
David makes that little EPI’ sing-and that little Archtop’ isn’t much larger than a Viola-but Jackie Green ain’t no Slouch on that old Gibson Acoustic
Gregg allman once watched guy play and said man this cat must get paid by the note...that ain't dave rawlings.
sure sounds like "Michigan" from the Milk Carton Kids at the end - but they were obviously influenced by The Legend Dave Rawlings quite a lot......
I thought the same. Such a beautiful song. Odd that they would do that though ,but then, maybe not so odd.
He got such a cool guitar
Grate players !
Grater spelling.
And the hat is great as well...
lol This is how guitar players talk to each other... rarely responding verbally... just playing a chord to illustrate that you've understood the point... then spontaneously breaking into a song together to close.
No, it's not.
Did you fail to notice that Jackie Green rarely shut his fucking mouth?
Sure can rock the double denim
Rawlings just needs to play for 10 seconds of Everything Is Free Now and I well up.. the most expressive guitarist... wow
That old archtop sounds so sweet.
Does anyone know what amp he's carrying?
Who won the talent show?
People are ripping in Jackie Greene. I thought he did a fine job for D’Addario. Played rhythm alongside a skilled lead guitarist allowing the lead to travel extemporaneously. Just wished it could have gone on longer. Both did a good job. Any criticism is unjustified.
"Any criticism is unjustitied". You big-headed fuck.
Good grief that guitar, both those guitars, sound so good
Who was the crazy leader of that band he was talking about? Unknown Hinson maybe?
Hey Jackie- pretty cool box ya got there.
Damn magic kapos
Dave is a guitar genius, and it's so fun to see the giddy delight that he has while playing and talking about it.
Jackie did a great interview/jam, and is no slouch himself on the guitar and singing.
So badass
Damn, an f hole acoustic sounds so good.
Why is this less popular than some of the electric videos? Raw notes written with warm tones.
matttttt... :'( :'( :'*
pilled up
beauteus
If you've had the opportunity to see Dave and Gillian - Gillian will occasionally play Dave's guitar just to prove it's Dave - not his cheap old guitar!
dave's so lucky, dating the beautiful gillian welch.
Fine old guitars.
The 10,000 hour rule does not apply to age! keep playing folks best way to enjoy your time
6:37 Sick.
Kewl as! :D
Interviewer is on edibles
Dave's guitar sounds like a cannon
More like a Nikon.
I wonder if the rockabilly guy he was talking about was Dex Romweber
I doubt it
