+Aidan Mouellic He's the man. Check out the North Mississippi Allstars - Shake Hands With Shorty and Phantom 51 albums. Also peep The Word. Dude is a legend, as is his pops and brother. NMAS did a nice Jammin in the Van as well.
+pbtoutant don't forget his time with The Black Crowes.. he recorded "Warpaint" and "Before the Frost... After The Freeze" with them. He also has a band with the great Jimbo Mathus called "South Memphis String Band" and has appeared on some of Jimbo's albums too! And if you don't know Jimbo, you better GET to know Jimbo!
Luther is one of if not the best americana style guitar player on the scene. I think that guys like Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks could learn from his simplicity and they way he builds his runs to creshendos so they're not "just solos"
Leo, over the years seeing North Mississippi Allstars it always amazed me. Luther goes from the most front porch, down in the delta picking to Duane Allman slide seamlessly! It all fits so nice, effortless almost. Then if the R L Burnside and Mississippi Fred McDowell style aren't enough? Out steps Jimi Hendrix! Cody Dickinson is off the chain as well
Luther’s biggest influence and teacher was Lee Baker (of Memphis). Lee played in (his dad’s) Jim Dickinson’s band, Mudboy and The Neutrons. I saw Lee a lot of playing with Mudboy. I first saw Lee in 1969 with his band, Moloch. When Duane Allman died, Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts came to Lee’s house in Memphis and tried to hire him. He was THAT good! But Lee declined because he didn’t want to be on the road so much. It looks like Luther is teaching Shawn here. 👍🏻👍🏻 I highly suggest you listen to Mudboy and the Neutrons and Moloch. ❤️
Good post. Hey I was taking my morning walk & thought about you Luther when I heard this song, Luther's Blues, My mother calls me Luther & my daddy calls me son, yes and my woman calls me a fool and you know she is the only one. Yes, I don't know why she treats me so bad, I have been so sweet and kind, if you don't stop doing me the way you doing me, I am going to have to go to the crazy house to save my poor mind. Play On Jimi !!!
Luther is really great, however, Jackie Green can walk over to the piano or B-3 or the drums and play at a very high, professional level. Both are really special in their own way.
all of the above are true...but i saw BOTH Crowes tours alternately featuring each of these guys, and the tour with Luther was just SO much better.... maybe it was a bad night for Jackie, the Robinsons Dad had just died right before the show...
slinky emperor True, Jackie is less of a lead guitarist and more of a great singer-songwriter, and can play keys. Luther is a poor singer but is a guitar phenom. Saw Jackie with the Crowes in 2013 where he provided great backing vocals and simply adequate guitars, but he's still a great musician.
+JakeZZX definitely. What I notice with Matt, he may not be the best guitar player in the world but man you can see it in his eyes and his smile, he's just in awe of musicianship. He loves watchin people do what makes them special.
I was skeptical at first since The rad Matt Sweeney was missing and his groovy subjects, but this is a fine video and has some tasty tips , beautiful playing and wisdom. Thank you for sharing.
matt ,where are you man, oh well, and Luther is awesome, but if they hadn't put his name up i wouldn't have recognized him , he chopped his locks and wooo, but regardless he is a super nice cat, and an infectious player
Luther Dickinson is doing a live interactive masterclass with Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp on 9/14!! You get to actually talk to him live person to person, it sounds really cool. www.rockcamp.com/masterclass.php
Yeah, but Luther doesn't realise (or more likely is simply not mentioning) that George Benson was shucking & jiving. George Benson fucking worshiped Grant Green, and damn sure didn't play that way by accident...
This dude is laying down some sparkling gems.
The way he talks about the guitar gets me so fired up!
I can't see either of these 2 guys enough. 2 of my absolute favorites.
I built the guitar Luther is playing. Baxendale Guitar in Athens Ga.
that was a pretty incredible watch. Real raw enjoyment of playin grass roots guitar. Beautiful.
Luther is the man. And so is David Rawlings. And Jackie Green! That's all you need to know.
I’ve seen Jackie and Luther on their own and both as black Crowe’s guitarist.. but war paint with Luther was a game changer... great session!
I love all the acoustic stuff from this series. Keep it up.
Wish they showed him playing the guitar in the cover photo, that thing is gorgeous
This is great - hope to see more in this series
Luther has always been the bomb man🤙Super mojo player✌️
This just introduced me to the beautiful playing of Luther Dickinson. Thank You.

What a slick dude.
It's my aim to be able to play this well some day :)
Dude's modelling his look on Dylan circa New Morning.
WTF?!
Shawn Lane (!!!!!) was his teacher! check 06:25
I highly suggest to all of you to check this guy out. shawn was a stone-cold genius!
+Neil Raouf Yes, he was! There are several clips on RUclips with Luther playing with Shawn!
southboundtraveler thx for the info. gonna check this vids out!
I never knew he was a student of Shawn Lane. I was always curious how he played Shawn Lane's songs live with the DDT band.

DICKINSON BLOWS THIS PUNK AWAY
Luther blows most people away.

Did he even use the 125 shown in the thumbnail
wow, this guy can tell a story and play along too.
Fugg yeah.
Don't get me wrong, I like this guy's playing and he's a good host, but Matt Sweeney really brought something special to this show :/
+JakeZZX I totally agree.

Ok, D’addario, at least what is the string gauge he’s using?
matt ,where are you man, oh well, and Luther is awesome, but if they hadn't put his name up i wouldn't have recognized him , he chopped his locks and wooo, but regardless he is a super nice cat, and an infectious player
He’s a great guy. He’s very humble and easy to talk to. He’s just regular folks. I know his mom and knew his dad, Jim. He was raised right.
Great video thank you guys
Luther Dickinson is as good a musician as there is.

Where's Matt?!? 😭😭😭
Working for Noisey from the Vice network, with a show called guitar moves.
Yeah, but Luther doesn't realise (or more likely is simply not mentioning) that George Benson was shucking & jiving. George Benson fucking worshiped Grant Green, and damn sure didn't play that way by accident...
Way to go Jackie! Top guy.
