Ive listened to this song so many times in heart ache, in search of answers and healing. I hope everyone else finds what they are searching for, whether it be peace, love and hope. Remember to love yourself, you are worth it.
In the film 'Walk the Line' Johny Cash is advised to only record a song as if it were his last testimony. This is what I feel when I listen ti Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings; that they are always singing their hearts out, as if for the last time. ` I love their work.
A perfect sonic and thematic blending of two covers, with their own unique, unmistakable, haunting personal touch. Dave has some of the most tasteful passages and fills with that ol' Epiphone that I have heard. This is one you just have to return to now and again, it's carved out a little nook in my head. "We've got a problem with no solution but to love and to be loved."
Method Acting is a Bright Eyes song and Cortez is Neil Young. Both are covers. Beautiful covers nonetheless, but the lyrics you quoted are from Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes
Whenever people say that there is" no good music around these days" I just point them to these two and some others . Talent is around, you just have to look or be lucky enough to stumble across it, When you do , for me, it makes my day and is a place to retreat into in an angry world
It has been my experience that the vast majority of people that say and believe that actually have no interest in finding or discovering new music. They prefer to be miserable.
That is such an incredible transition between songs. There is no doubt in my mind that Dave Rawlings is one of (if not THE) greatest musicians of the past 50 years.
He's good. No doubt. Are you familiar with another great american music tradition called jazz? David Rawlings does face some serious contenders for the title in names such as Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, John Coltrane, Chet Baker, Brad Mehldau, Sonny Rollins, Bill Frisell, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald and many more. The Beatles did play pretty good as well.
this is one of my all time favorite songs and performances. Gillian and David are absolutely amazing musicians and incredibly inspiring. I watch this video on a regular basis and I wish there was more music like this in the world.
As someone who often come across artists like Nick Drake and Elliott Smith too late... I'm ecstatic that these two are still making beautiful music to this day. Thank you for this seamless rendition of two great songs. PS, Dave, you shred.
The finest guitar player I've heard for many a year. I cannot understand why he isn't more regarded. Gillian is also amazing, but I feel like that doesn't need saying.
So cool when artists are mutual fans of each other, I initially got exposed to Welch and Rawlings through a vid of Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) singing Welch's "Everything is Free Now." Now, here I am watching Welch and Rawlings cover Bright Eyes' "Method Acting." Such an absolute treat, starting to really love this duo. So thanks Conor and thanks Welch and Rawlings, much love.
It was seeing Gillian Welch singing backup vocals on Conan O’Brien’s show that led me to a deep love for the Decemberists and Colin Meloy. Gillian Welch is the best gateway to other stellar musicians out there.
This song moves me so much. To rework bright eyes' brilliant lyrics in this way is a measure of their genius. It feels like a hymn to psychoanalysis to me. Thanks so much Dave and Gillian.
+JivinJane bright Eyes are Conor Oborst's indie / folk band before he went under his own name. Method Acting is the second track on 2002's "Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground" . A brilliant song in itself but Dave takes it from a desperate place to one of gentle beauty.
Literally probably the greatest band of our generation. Lorde, Mac Miller, the killers, Jason mraz plus many other artist remake his stuff because it's so amazing, but no one knows who Conor Oberst is :/ Check him out. See who your favorite artist's favorite artist is.
Method Acting: There's no beginning to the story A bookshelf sinks into the sand A language learned and forgot in turn Is studied once again It's a shocking bit of footage Viewed on a shitty TV screen You can squint at it through snowy static To make out what it means And keep stretching that antenna Hoping that it will come clear I need some reception, a higher message Please tell me what to feel 'Cause I don't know what tomorrow brings It's alive with such possibility But I know that I feel better when I sing Burdens are lifted from me That's my voice rising So T-Bone, please keep the tape rolling Gil, keep strumming that guitar We need a record of our failures We must document our loves I sat too long in my silence Grown too old in my pain To shed this skin, be born again It starts with an ending And I don't know what tomorrow brings It's full of such possibility But I know that I feel better when I sing Burdens are lifted from me That's my voice rising It's not a movie, no private screening This method acting, I call it living It's like a fountain, the door is open We have a problem with no solution But to love and to be loved So thank you, friends, for the time we've shared Your love stays with me like sunlight and air And though I truly wish I could keep hanging around here My joy is covering me, soon I will disappear *** Cortez The Killer: He came dancing across the water with his galleons and guns Looking for the new world in the palace in the sun On the shore lay Montezuma with his coca leaves and pearls In his halls, he often wondered the secrets of the world His subjects gathered round him like the leaves around a tree In their clothes of many colors for the angry gods to see And the women all looked beautiful and the men stood straight and strong They offered life in sacrifice so that others could go on Hate was just a legend, war was never known People worked together and they lifted many stones Then they carried them to the flatlands, but they died along the way And they built up with their bare hands what we still can't do today And I know she's living there and she loves me to this day I just can't remember when or how I lost my way
From Wikipedia: David Rawlings achieves his signature guitar sound flatpicking a small archtop guitar. The 1935 Epiphone Olympic that has been his primary instrument was a mid-priced guitar for its time, with a carved arched solid sprucewood top, carved arched solid mahogany back and mahogany sides. So basically something off the shelf in 1935, wow.
I think it's just him that makes it sound it so good. It just suits his style perfectly. Gillian's guitar really is beautiful. It's so deep and full, it sounds almost like a piano.
David told me the Epi is quirky and has damn little bass so Gillian'd Gibson has to do the depth. He did find a 1936 mad by the same guy.. so.. has a backup. He'd found another '35 Epiphone but it was not the same maker. NOT a match. I tol him he wrestled the Epi to make it sat things guitars try to keep secret. He liked that idea... its what he does.'
aha, a 35 Epiphone Olympic, he playes it to the bone.He told in a interview that his style is a bit out of tune, and very few people heard it . i love it ! it's a bit like Neil young 's style but different outcome.indeed very special .
We haven't archieved full cloudcover yet ,but : these words keep whirling in my head, Gillian and Dave are musical intwined and it's so beautifull ,amazing !!
From France… juste dire votre morceau, ensemble je l’écouterai jusqu’à ma propre fin. Merci de l’avoir jouer ensemble, vous deux, c’est très beau de vous voir et de vous entendre et de vous voir. Très belle vidéo dont je ne me lasserai jamais. Merci pour ce merveilleux instant de musique. V.
Saw them quite a few times. want more. Found recordings of about 20 shows.. want more. they do something all their own......and this is not even the MOST amazing
Unreal... Still transfixed since I started watching this compilation of Gillian and David. Cortez the Killer is one of my favorite Neil Young songs and I love all Neil Young songs. David and Gillian do it great justice. Can't help but think that Neil would love it too.
Stumbled upon this video three years ago--had no idea who these people were. Now I can't get enough of 'em! Made an 800 mile trip/vacation to Chicago to see them in August, where they played this (and Queen Jane Approximately) for the encore. The Best!
I was thrilled with this song choice for the Tiny Desk outing - perhaps the finest moment on the recordings with Dave's name out front. We get to hear that same voice they make together, but constructed backwards.
Just stumbled across this. Had no idea I'd be spending my night in tears. An absolutely heart felt and lovely cover of two amazing songs by amazing people. Thank you.
This is so different from the Bright Eyes original. Conor's version has a lot more frustration and anger behind it. This version is so mellow... It's really great though!
Ive listened to this song so many times in heart ache, in search of answers and healing. I hope everyone else finds what they are searching for, whether it be peace, love and hope. Remember to love yourself, you are worth it.
After my dad died, the first time I cried was when I saw this video. He was a musician.
In the film 'Walk the Line' Johny Cash is advised to only record a song as if it were his last testimony. This is what I feel when I listen ti Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings; that they are always singing their hearts out, as if for the last time. ` I love their work.
Agreed
I have never seen a couple so together singing and playing. Brings me to tears. Bless them.
no one, not a bluegrass fan, nor folk, nor rock nor a classical guitar listener could fail to be totally awed by the Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings duo
must be the ultimate music couple
Here in 2024 they otherworldly ❤❤
I can just see a grin from ear to ear on Neil Young's face - his song being treated with such care and finesse
I honestly think these two are one of the best duo's of the last century
Gillian and Dave are a good example of how much better we are when we are together. 💚✌️
A perfect sonic and thematic blending of two covers, with their own unique, unmistakable, haunting personal touch. Dave has some of the most tasteful passages and fills with that ol' Epiphone that I have heard. This is one you just have to return to now and again, it's carved out a little nook in my head. Two beautiful guitars meander around each other like wild flowers.
Whenever people say that there is" no good music around these days" I just point them to these two and some others . Talent is around, you just have to look or be lucky enough to stumble across it, When you do , for me, it makes my day and is a place to retreat into in an angry world
Well said my distant friend!
It has been my experience that the vast majority of people that say and believe that actually have no interest in finding or discovering new music. They prefer to be miserable.
I love their version of the Bright Eyes song!!
Every time I hear them singing I'm amazed how perfectly they sound together. Dave's guitar playing style is also one of a kind.
You can't put much more of yourself into something, the guy playing the guitar is giving you his soul...
That is such an incredible transition between songs. There is no doubt in my mind that Dave Rawlings is one of (if not THE) greatest musicians of the past 50 years.
true true
He's good. No doubt. Are you familiar with another great american music tradition called jazz? Sure no question, Dave is good, amazing indeed, but no-one comes close to Jarrett, absolutely no-one.
beats the hell out of alison and plant no disrespect
You know this song was written by Bright Eyes but this version is so much different
LOVE these two. Seen them a few times at festivals and they never disappoint! Kind of have a major crush on Dave!
this is one of my all time favorite songs and performances. Gillian and David are absolutely amazing musicians and incredibly inspiring. I watch this video on a regular basis and I wish there was more music like this in the world.
A commenter wrote years ago about David Rawlings, "He's earned his right to wear a cowboy hat."
AtlantaAmsterdam not a cowboy hat...straw hat worn by many southerners , rich and poor alike.
As someone who often come across artists like Nick Drake and Elliott Smith too late... I'm ecstatic that these two are still making beautiful music to this day. Thank you for this seamless rendition of two great songs. PS, Dave, you shred.
every record they make is essential
The finest guitar player I've heard for many a year. I cannot understand why he isn't more regarded. Gillian is also amazing, but I feel like that doesn't need saying.
Dan McCaffrey he doesn’t care he’s happy? And I disagree headlined Hardly Strictly BG several years.. but only has 3 albums, 1 brand new.
I love this song so much. It can make me weep and make peace with humanity. Please don't ever stop playing music, Gillian and Dave.
I've loved them forever.
So cool when artists are mutual fans of each other, I initially got exposed to Welch and Rawlings through a vid of Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) singing Welch's "Everything is Free Now." It was seeing Gillian Welch singing backup vocals on Conan O’Brien’s show that led me to a deep love for the Decemberists and Colin Meloy. Gillian Welch is the best gateway to other stellar musicians out there.
It was the first time I’d heard them and still love “Down by the Water.”
Love his melodic solo lines, and the sound of his guitar is so special. Great duo
still awesome and relevant here in 2022
This song moves me so much. To rework bright eyes' brilliant lyrics in this way is a measure of their genius. It feels like a hymn to psychoanalysis to me. Thanks so much Dave and Gillian.
+Richard Price , Who is bright eyes?
+JivinJane bright Eyes are Conor Oborst's indie / folk band before he went under his own name. Method Acting is the second track on 2002's "Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground" . A brilliant song in itself but Dave takes it from a desperate place to one of gentle beauty.

I don't know how this could be more perfect. Perfect lyrics, perfect instrumentation, perfectly delivered. Thanks. I really needed to hear this today.
I'm glad to be alive right now so that I can witness this. Absolutely incredible.
Method Acting:
There's no beginning to the story
A bookshelf sinks into the sand
A language learned and forgot in turn
Is studied once again
It's a shocking bit of footage
Viewed on a shitty TV screen
You can squint at it through snowy static
To make out what it means
And keep stretching that antenna
Hoping that it will come clear
I need some reception, a higher message
Please tell me what to feel
'Cause I don't know what tomorrow brings
It's alive with such possibility
But I know that I feel better when I sing
Burdens are lifted from me
That's my voice rising
So T-Bone, please keep the tape rolling
Gil, keep strumming that guitar
We need a record of our failures
We must document our loves
I sat too long in my silence
Grown too old in my pain
To shed this skin, be born again
It starts with an ending
And I don't know what tomorrow brings
It's full of such possibility
But I know that I feel better when I sing
Burdens are lifted from me
That's my voice rising
It's not a movie, no private screening
This method acting, I call it living
It's like a fountain, the door is open
We have a problem with no solution
But to love and to be loved
So thank you, friends, for the time we've shared
Your love stays with me like sunlight and air
And though I truly wish I could keep hanging around here
My joy is covering me, soon I will disappear

Cortez The Killer:
He came dancing across the water with his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world in the palace in the sun
On the shore lay Montezuma with his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls, he often wondered the secrets of the world
His subjects gathered round him like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors for the angry gods to see
And the women all looked beautiful and the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice so that others could go on
Hate was just a legend, war was never known
People worked together and they lifted many stones
Then they carried them to the flatlands, but they died along the way
And they built up with their bare hands what we still can't do today
And I know she's living there and she loves me to this day
I just can't remember when or how I lost my way
Absolutely love these two together and love how Dave seems to become one with hes guitar when he's playing
Very few songs touch deep inside me but this one does. The truth in it is so bitter-sweet.
Their “depressing” songs always manage to make me feel BETTER!
Cortez the killer....wow!!best version i've heard ever! These voices are incredible!!!

I think it's just him that makes it sound it so good. It just suits his style perfectly. Gillian's guitar really is beautiful. It's so deep and full, it sounds almost like a piano.
his style is very similar to the lead guitarist of Milk Carton Kids.
The lead guitarist of MCK has completely copied David Rawlings' style. FTFY
aha, a 35 Epiphone Olympic, he playes it to the bone.He told in a interview that his style is a bit out of tune, and very few people heard it . i love it ! it's a bit like Neil young 's style but different outcome.indeed very special .
This pair are just the absolute dog's bollocks. They're every bit as good as this live. Give me shivers.
Keep coming back to this again and again and it never fails to move me.Played with utmost care and love.Thank you both.
It's not depressing, it's about connection! And then Cortez the Killer, well that's just perfect
Agreed. Goosebumps.
Amazing, I could listen to these two all day.
One of the greatest songs ever written, and they know it, done it proud 👍
We haven't archieved full cloudcover yet ,but : these words keep whirling in my head, Gillian and Dave are musical intwined and it's so beautifull ,amazing !!
Flat-out perfection. Mesmerizing, soul-soothing. Sublime.
From the UK can i say - THIS IS BEAUTIFUL music from 2 excellent musicians.

simply amazing - what a guitar Player DR is... so soulful... beyond words!
Simply outstanding! Such feeling, such grace.
One life might not be enough to play the Guitar as good as Dave Rawlings. Endless admiration.
I love this intimate thing npr is doing, its like having them in your own livingroom..👍
Dave's licks are unique and so full of true poetry.
Miss Welch seems just jumping out from one of Dorothea Lange's pictures shot in the Depression era... She's so true and touching, it really hurts.
Beautifully put. She has a powerful presence.
Saw them quite a few times. want more. Found recordings of about 20 shows.. want more. they do something all their own......and this is not even the MOST amazing
@@mesharialkadhi9876 powerfully delicate.
robert donaldson love that - powerfully delicate . Lovely
That’s exactly it. Like the migrant woman picture in the dustbowl. Lovely.

Unreal... Still transfixed since I started watching this compilation of Gillian and David. Cortez the Killer is one of my favorite Neil Young songs and I love all Neil Young songs. David and Gillian do it great justice. Can't help but think that Neil would love it too.
Wunderschöne Interpretation, fantastische Gitarre und Stimmen!!!!!

There is no better time spent than listening to these two
Keep coming back to this, it does not get better. fuck me...the guitaring is sublime.
I never get tired of Dave's playing and the tone of that 35 Epiphone Olympic. What a talent!
He is a remarkable, mesmerizing guitar player!🤠
I keep coming back to see this to make sure its as good as I thought. It always is, often better. outstanding people.
God I love this version of Brights eyes Method Acting . Gill and Dave are the best!
Stumbled upon this video three years ago--had no idea who these people were. Now I can't get enough of 'em! Made an 800 mile trip/vacation to Chicago to see them in August, where they played this (and Queen Jane Approximately) for the encore. The Best!
That was completely spellbinding! This is what perfection sounds like.
These two are so authentic and inspiring. Simple and sweet.
It's so much more than a blending of fine voice and fine playing. It is a blending of Heart and Spirit! Universal Truth! DaveyJO in Pa.
my fantasy backing band has Dave Rawlings and Richard Thompson on guitar..
Mark Russell Willie Watson has worked out fantastically
Wow love that concept !!!
What a great idea!
Im sorry but this comment is fucking hilarious, Rawlings a back up? Guitar much?
Amazing performance. Also I love these crowded shelves in the background. That's what a home looks like.
I was thrilled with this song choice for the Tiny Desk outing - perhaps the finest moment on the recordings with Dave's name out front. We get to hear that same voice they make together, but constructed backwards.
It doesn't get any better than Dave Rawlings making his guitar sing
LOVE THESE TWO TOGETHER! BOTH ARE AMAZING ON THEIR OWN! TOGETHER IT IS MAGIC!
Just stumbled across this. Had no idea I'd be spending my night in tears. An absolutely heart felt and lovely cover of two amazing songs by amazing people. Thank you.

Love their soul penetrating mix of simple melody dressimg thoughtful folk tales told in beautiful sonic and vocal harmony. Mitch
This is so different from the Bright Eyes original. Conor's version has a lot more frustration and anger behind it. This version is so mellow... It's really great though!
Man amazing never heard of them. Stumbled on to him doing a cover of going to California..
Another entry in the annals of "cover versions better than the originals".
So good! And that seamless segway into Cortez the Killer!!! Love it!
J Michael Short I was just about to say who else could combine these two songs as if they belonged together all along?
