Great camera. Watching their hands is just a joy. The way Mr Rawlings climbs up and down that fretboard and how Ms Gillian shifts those chords with the delicate hammer ons. Like watching a couple of spiders weaving a web. And of course the singing and the song. Lovely
Gillian Welch, we share blood lines ..., likewise David and the entire North south and west. (The east is so far away for me..., God help us) Your words are sweet and true, when did you and David get so tight that the two guitars start to smoke at times. I was born and raised in Dayton Ohio, a little town down the road from Yellow Springs Ohio. I clicked on John Prine and the two of you came up on the screen...., so I turned up the volume. As a child in Oklahoma (and earlier Missouri), Raton was always the magical gateway to the Rockies and my grandfather's cabin 50 miles below Aspen. And I liked road trips ("little brother thinks the road is straight and fine.") When I hear this song, I always am in a time machine 50 years ago and remember the mountains silent neath a blanket green and blue (if they aren't white).
First time I went there with them, granddad and grandma stayed in a motel in Raton (I was 6) before the drive into the Rockies. I still remember it like yesterday, 55 years later.
@@robertjarrett1632 I used to drive from Amarillo to Trinidad in the 60s and got stuck several times on Raton - stopped at that truck stop that had a dinner buffet.
What a beautiful couple making beautiful muisic. In a weird way, through associations that will probably not resonate to many people reading this, I have the strange idea that they are the Fred and Toody of this kind of music.
Townes loved New Mexico .. It is only 20 miles from Raton New Mexico to Trinidad, Co. Separated by Raton pass in the Sange de Christo mountain range. Anyone who has driven that pass in the winter knows how unpredictable it can be. Every time I drive that pass I think of the late great Townes Van Zandt.
Her actual life story is wild. She was adopted by a couple in LA, went to Berklee College of Music and fell in love with country/folk. Later turned out her biological father was a country musician.
Everytime I hear the license taken on the words "through them hills" during the chorus it absolutely grates on me, and horrendously so but otherwise this is quite a lovely cover. If it ain't broken, why fix it?
These two have learned a valuable lesson about guitar voicing. Notice how on almost every song they both capo up the neck. It gives the guitars voice a very chime and ethereal quality. She is an alto and the guitar voices are above hers. Even Rawlings has a tendency to solo way up the neck. Berklee school influence?
beautiful
oh, my alltime folkduo ever, sooo phantastic melodies and voives
They're so good, I've been listening for years, starting with revival. Thank you Gillian and Dave
Song that got me through the hardest time in my life.... come morning I'll be through them hills and gone.. So hard to lose a love
Beautiful. What a great duo…her voice is amazing…his playing is sublime…
David just cant stop touching those guitar strings...
Seriously the geniuses of Gillian and Dave stuns me. How many hours do they practice? I Honestly believe they just sense these songs.
Very nice, Raton holds a special place in my heart, I was born there back in 1965
Born there 46
This is just the finest thing I've heard in a month of Sundays!
Today, A Sunday and they just started playing... A very Happy Month of Sundays for this old man.
This might be perfect. Gillian's vocals, Dave's guitar and Townes lyrics.
Just the best thing on the internet!

Their musical roots are as deep as it goes. A hundred years ago or yesterday, people respond to their music.
Beautiful stories ! Love their superb chemistry what a beautiful moment

Treasures! The interview, the song and the performance all.
I never knew of the connection between Townes and Welch/Rawlings - holy crap my mind is blown!

my daddy used to play at the bluebird. one of my earliest memories/ i jusr realised i never asked him about it
They are brilliant
Fabulous - I'll be learning it next
Beautiful pickin’ and singin’. The Bluebird Cafe is a place where magic happens. Cheers!
Dave's occasional use of dissonance is brilliant! They are better than ever.
Their Berklee conservatory training is evident. Musical sophistication hiding in plain sight. They are the *best*.
Yeah, gives it a little "buzz saw" to the sound. Some grain, substance.
This time I didn't cry until the end of the last verse, before the final chorus.
Eeeeee, shivers down me spine! Thank you for sharing.
His guitars seems to have a very high action, but he’s been playing it for ages. You don’t need an expensive guitar to sound great if you have talent

Just to let y'all know the meaning of Raton; Raton Pass gets you into the Rockies (or vice versa).

Total respect for the song. As per usual.
This makes me love Gillian and David even more. Big approval from Townes Van Zandt

This performance was so good.

Look at Gillian, playing a Martin!
Yeah, that’s what a guitar is for.
gillian looks so much like my grandmother it creeps me out....wonder if here mother was born in kansas?
