What a gem! Rawlings and Welch are one of the great music duos this country has produced! they're in the canon of the louvins, the everlys, S&G, IGs, etc. I love Rawlings enthusiasm and care! It shows in the music they make. I was blessed to see them recently. They're trading off song for song almost, Welch, Rawlings, and I think this will continue on the new album, "Woodland Studios," out in a few weeks. Best of the best stuff out there! I'm excited to see what the new plant in Denver will bring! Thank you for the interview!
Woodland Studios should be designated as a historical landmark. Hopefully it already is. Thank you for the great video tour/interview. Have a great week everyone. Wax on. Wax off!🎶🎵
Here is a quick flashback about Woodland Studios … 1987 I was working for Corner Cartage (Corner Music) and it was 8:9pm ish and I was rolling out Brent Rowen’s effects rack that was the size of a deep refrigerator (200-300 lbs) and a Ford Bronco pulls up and a guy says: “Hey let me help you” I had the lift gate on the front door stairs landing, there was no back loading dock. He held the door open and helped me get it on the gate, I said thanks and he walk in the studio … I found out the next day while dropping off more gear it was Charlie Daniels. Thanks Dave and Gillian for keeping the studio spirit alive.
Good music still exists, thanks to people like Dave and Gillian who carry the torch! You can tell by the way he talks that he has a genuine passion for what he does. It's infectious in all the best ways. 😊🎶
What a fantastic interview. David and Gillian are some of the finest players in the world. This interview gave me more insight into their life's project. So happy for them and for the folks who follow them. I will see them in NC in the fall.
I am so happy to find this video. I love this music so much and am so grateful to be able to buy high quality analog recordings of the albums. Would journey sounds absolutely unbelievable and I can’t wait for Time the Revelator on vinyl! I had the opportunity to see the first show after the hiatus in Vermont and it was just incredible. I am so grateful that Gillian and David are making such wonderful Americana and that they are also obsessed with sound. It’s almost too good to be true…
David and Gillian are carrying a great heritage together one of the few things not done by pure economic reasons. The heritage from Lomax with blues, soul, gospel etc. No 3 minutes chartbusters with autotune etc... Thank you Dave!
I absolutely loved this convo. It's so great to hear someone as passionate about analog sound as the music it records say it's ultimately about the joy of the end product. I run a cassette duplication rig in Philly for s merch shop and I totally relate to that thinking that went into keeping the signal chain as pure as possible. Hoping some customer eventually takes us up on a AAA run. Thanks for posting 🙏🏻
Not having kept up with any of this, it's exciting to learn about someone near me so dedicated to the craft and generous with his enthusiasm. Dave sounds like a great guy doing genuinely great things to support and promote the techniques and processes we know from experience have LASTING value. Thanks for traveling to Nashtown and doing the interview, Michael!
Michael, you have done it again! What a great interview (you let Dave just open up without having to bombard him with questions). It was clear he was comfortable with you because he knows where you come from. More please!
Incredible interview Michael. Dave Rawlins is a national treasure😎. That H&H tape is amazing and probably the best packaging/ package as I’ve seen for ultra tapes. It’s awesome they have their own masters; and can’t wait to see what they do next.
This is joyfully dorky stuff. I really appreciate you guys doing this sort of deep dive into this stuff, but it's actually the first time I've ever seen Dave interviewed at all. The music business is so tricky and he navigates it so well.
The recording studio, the recording process is as much a creative endeavor as writing a song. It'd be so amazing to record there. Wish in one hand.......Great interview.
Did a demo with a rock band from South Florida in this room back in August of 1973. It's funny to hear someone refer to Nashville in the 90s as quaint, small town. When we were there, the powers to be were going to tear down the Ryman, believe it or not. Great memories, thanks for the video.
Dave is always interesting, his music with Gillian has brought the world a lot of joy. I worked on the down from the mountain tour , unfortunately I cut my own lawn and don’t have 600 bucks to drop on the tape or 900 bucks to drop on overalls from Willie Watson. We dirt people live in a very different corner of the simulation that’s running right now , I’m an iron worker in Los Angeles.Michael I think I saw you at cantors a few years ago. Thanks for the content . Have a good weekend.
I'm glad you wrote this. It is realistic. I work a dead end job and can't afford to buy a home let alone have a second building with a recording studio or a workshop. Forget investments in manufacturing. I'm glad and fascinated that David does what he does, does it well and passionately. It is very interesting that he comes from a family of engineers at Owens-Corning. All we can do is make the best of what we have and enjoy it. Any recordings I make will be on a cheap DAW from 2004 and no-name condenser microphones. I'll see them next month; I'm sure it will be a wonderful show. Be well and take it easy.
Not only are they saving music, they save authentic buildings! Last time I was in Nashville I could only peak through the entry. 2:00 I wish he had not interrupted, I wanted to learn about the restoration. I would have loved to see the entire building and learned its history .
I’m still just a few mins into this interview, but Fremer I hope you asked him about the Time the Revelator vinyl release!!! C’mon Dave and Gillian!!!! EDIT: 17:20 is my answer!!! YESSSSSSSSS
I've got David in my left ear and the interviewer in my right. I'm listening to this with my recording cans on. Don't know if that makes a difference or not...
Great interview with an amazing artist. Would love to hear the Dawes record that Dave produced pressed to his standards. Some of my favorite electric guitar sounds ever are on that one. (All Your Favorite Bands)
Wow real to real tapes! But who has one of those machines? I had a great one way back in 1967 but it was long gone sometime in the seventies. I had a great Sony sound on sound, 4 tape at once . A very good machine, but when reel to reel music stopped being sold, we sold our reel to reel recorder.
What a lovely man Dave Rawlings is! I'll be glad when they repress at Paramount Pressings - my Q(uality?)RP 'TH&TH' has a serious edge warp but I couldn't get a replacement, and 'SJ' is off-centre!
UPDATE: Just played my Paramount represses of 'TH&TH' and 'SJ' - direct from the Acony UK store - and all is now wonderful! No pressing defects as I had with the QRP presses.
Next time you can bring your Neumann mic/Nagra r2r set up and get it down as you wish. For this, single person crew shot I had Rode Bluetooth microphones.
@@trackingangle929 Thank you so much. This is so funny. I just dived behind my computer monitor speakers and corrected it. All these years I have had it back to front, even mixing music and film projects. Glad we sorted that one out. I can assure you my Hi FI system down stairs is all good.
A lovely guy. I wish him nothing but success.👍

Historic
I love their music and did not know Dave’s depth of engineering knowledge. Thanks for this!
Dude, you don’t know how much I love this level of detail. And Woodland, and Dave and Gil’s work together! Get out of here! More, more!

30 years in Nashville and finally get to see inside Woodland. ( Save for the "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" LP photos) Thanks
Fascinating guy.

Thanks for this, Michael. Delighted to hear of another artist with this much passion for quality. Album bought!

Cool job, allways fun to here musicians ideals and past projects, these folks are my heaven, and all the friends they perform with, pure magic, thanks
Fantastic interview. Thank you Michael, and thank you David!!
Wow! what a great interview!
Amazing. Was lucky enough to run into Dave outside Woodland earlier this year, what a genuinely sweet person. Curious to see the control room.
Excellent interview !!
I’m so glad I have seen Gillian and Dave many time s at the Strawberry Music Featival way back I. The 90’s and on through to 2000’s.

glad to hear that the rest of their catalog is coming to vinyl - i was worried that the tapes were damaged in the 2020 tornado! great interview
The recording studio, the recording process is as much a creative endeavor as writing a song. It'd be so amazing to record there. Wish in one hand.......Great interview.
And in the other hand?😂

Thank goodness they did not take down the Ryman!
What great insight. Big fan of Dave and Gillian...if i get back to Nashville would luv to check this out..

Fantastic man Dave, i love him and Gillian...
Thanks for the interview..
✌️
Dave Rawlings is the man. Our four year old son, Townes, was almost named Rawlings. My wife opted for Townes in the end.
Townes Rawlings ....sounds good jus' sayin'

Love this!! 👍🎶
Thanks, love these amazing musicians, they have so many cool talented freinds that work with them, pure heaven
my left ear really enjoyed this!

Thank you for another great interview. Lots of exciting things should follow there
Lovely.
Thank you.
Love that building in 5 points!
Amazing! 🤩
I appreciated the homage to the shared working class sensibility.
ok, ok. i had to subscribe after the proper use of the word rarified. this was an extremely interesting interview 🙏🏼
Whatever it takes!
what he should want is some new songs. I love he and Gillians work but there is not enough of it . Nice place.
There’s a new record coming out next week
Great interview with an amazing artist. Would love to hear the Dawes record that Dave produced pressed to his standards. Some of my favorite electric guitar sounds ever are on that one. (All Your Favorite Bands)
Wow!! Great space. Great interview. Dave is such a bad ass. Subscribed.

how cool bro. 😎 new subscriber from Australia 🇦🇺 the algorithm brought me here. 👍
Great interview. Good point about the cassette. Don't wear your hat indoors, youngsters.
🤠

Mr Rawlings guitar playing is the most beating thing to me
Mean beatiful
So glad to see them back. Studio Looks great! Curious is Acony Studios now combined with Woodland or are they seperate studios?
It's ironical that the sound quality of this interview is so poor when much of the discussion is about quality sound .......
next time you can produce the video and supply and pay for it. Ok?
This is such a great document. The sound of the video is so weird though.
Rode bluetooth microphones. It's a one person video "crew" shoot.
I love the irony of this being about audiophiles and audio quality, and having terrible, tinny recorded sound throughout the interview. Too good.
Next time you can bring your Neumann mic/Nagra r2r set up and get it down as you wish. For this, single person crew shot I had Rode Bluetooth microphones.
Another great insight for us in land's far away. One question, did you get the left and right channel mixed up for the interview?
It was fine on mine so one of us has a crossed wire or he’s fixed it 😂
I actually did have it reversed originally but I dumped audio to Audacity & fixed it so it’s your playback that has it backwards
@@trackingangle929 Thank you so much. This is so funny. I just dived behind my computer monitor speakers and corrected it. All these years I have had it back to front, even mixing music and film projects. Glad we sorted that one out. I can assure you my Hi FI system down stairs is all good.
👍👍
No control room?
He didn’t wish to show it.
The mic levels are distorted. Hard to listen to this.
Yo Mike, what kind of music does this guy Dave Rawlings sing? What is his genre of music?
roughly speaking, modern day appalachian balladry...if you stream, check him out and definitely his partner Gillian Welch!
@@trackingangle929 I'll pass!
