Good review Jason. I really like the podmic. The size, the build quality, the sound, and the price tag (especially for the OG Podmic though it lacks USB connectivity) all make it a really good option for podcasters.
Hi, I have had one of these for a several months, and I record videos with it, but I am having a problem recently with the system sounds echoing when I am recording a video and making commentary. I thought I didn't have a problem before, and I use Freecam to record the screen, but the only thing I can do is mute my mic while recording the video on the screen. I don't know what changed. But it is a really good mic for the money.
@JasonPierceOfficial I moved my laptop. It's only echoing when recording system sounds. The sound is very good just when I am speaking on the mic. I have a sound baffling shield. Maybe something changed with my Rode Connect app. Maybe I need to move the mic to another table to get it far away from the laptop? Maybe I will restart the computer or something. Thanks for responding. God bless.
Jason thank you for the video. I have a question... I have the Podmic USB set to 63+ gain... it still seems pretty low in volumn.... am I doing something wrong?
When I was using the rode connect software I do recall having my gain cranked up pretty high. Definitely around 60-65. This was when I was plugging in using usb-c. After doing some research, the rode pod mic is considered a dynamic mic instead of a condenser mic. Basically dynamic microphones are not as sensitive and do not pick up noise as easily as condenser mics. So you really need to position your mouth closer in proximity to the mic. Condenser mics are super sensitive and do not require a lot of gain on the preamp. Recently I switched to using an XLR cable that plugs into the Scarlett Solo 4th Gen, and I connect that to my MacBook Pro. It is totally normal upon doing research for folks to turn up the gain to achieve a decent signal. You wanna aim for your normal voice to fall between -18 and -12 when recording, and when you export after applying equalization to your voice you want it around -12db to -6db. It takes some experimenting to get the sound you want, but after a while it will all be worth it. Feel free to reach out with any more questions and I’ll do my best to get back!
Jumping in here because I've had the same issue and now I use an inline preamp for a couple of quiet dynamic mics. The Cloudlifter is probably the most popular, but I have the SE DM1 from SE Electronics that is a little less expensive. It will give you an additional 28 db of clean gain so you don't have to crank it up so much and risk getting a hiss or a hum in your audio.
I have their rose wireless go, and I used to own the rode video micro. Just more familiar with their products. And it’s convenient to have the USB option. Sounds great imo
I don’t use rode connect anymore. I have my PodMic connected via XLR cable into my Scarlett Solo 4th gen. I make a few tweaks on the Scarlett solo, and master the audio in Final Cut Pro my editing software.
Well, you’re right that the Sony cameras usually have a USB-C input, but I’m not sure the PodMic was designed to connect to a camera. If I’m gonna connect via USB-C I will always plug in directly into my MacBook Pro. From there I could record the voice over and film on my camera. Then later sync the audio in post production. I don’t think I’ve seen any review or guide that says you can plug the PodMic into your camera. I think for the audio input in your camera, usually when I plug a shotgun mic into it or rode wireless go, I have to plug it in to the trs input, next to the headphone jack.
A lot of this mic are defective. A bunch of them die after some time and a lot others (via USB) keep disconnecting. Have you ever had this problem? This mic is really good, but it has become a nightmare for a lot of people. Really sad!
I’ve heard good things about Shure in general, but I’ve never used it. What I can say that the PodMic USB is my first pro-grade usb/Xlr microphone aside from wireless and shotgun mics I already own. And after using it for quite sometime it is really Amazon, the design to me looks better than shure, and the sound quality is great. Keep in mind you must dial in your settings either through the rode app if you’re using USB C, or if you’re using XLR you need to adjust the gain and settings on your audio interface to get the sound you prefer. Also although the native sound of the PodMic USB sounds good, I make further adjustments in my editing software Final Cut Pro. The PodMic USB seems future proof, ruggedly designed, and built to last. It looks awesome and sounds great. I rate this mic set up 10/10 for what I use it for. I think it would be great for podcasts and interviews!

Well said!
Great Review man you earn a new sub! I have a few Rode Microphones I'm really thinking about getting this now
Awesome, thank you!
@JasonPierceOfficial No problem man!

Did you change your studio set up? Changing curtains? Anything new?

your notebook stand looks interesting, could you please made a video about?

Thanks for watching!

What made you choose this over the Shure sm7 ?

Nice Review, do you believe that it's good for recording Hip-Hop vocals?
I could imagine that it’d be a great vocal mic. I would try to find other artists that are using this mic. But for my voiceovers it’s great!
Sounds good for me , probably I will be one of the artists using it hopefully soon
what are your rode connect setting for the mic that you configured to get the best audio?
I don’t use rode connect anymore. I have my PodMic connected via XLR cable into my Scarlett Solo 4th gen. I make a few tweaks on the Scarlett solo, and master the audio in Final Cut Pro my editing software.
How do you connect the Podmic usb to your Sony camera? I have both and haven’t found an easy way to do it with full resolution for both
Well, you’re right that the Sony cameras usually have a USB-C input, but I’m not sure the PodMic was designed to connect to a camera. If I’m gonna connect via USB-C I will always plug in directly into my MacBook Pro.

I have the same microphone, is there any settings I need to do on my rodecaster pro 2, to get that crisp audio exactly how you have in this video?
I might do a video on my current settings soon
A lot of this mic are defective. A bunch of them die after some time and a lot others (via USB) keep disconnecting. Have you ever had this problem?
This mic is really good, but it has become a nightmare for a lot of people.
Really sad!
I have not experienced any issues with this mic since purchasing it. Have you tried to change your usb-c cable?
@JasonPierceOfficial yes, tried many things.
Thanks, man 🙏
