Episode 405: How to Make the PodMic Sound Its Best - Кино
In the Rodecaster EQ settings, you can long press the gain buttons on screen to access the Q settings - of how broad the bell is you are going to adjust. Reallty helpful if you want to broaden or slim down the area of EQ.
Wow, that's super helpful. Thanks!
Tom, I just love all your videos and you've helped me so much in starting my own podcast (which is going swimmingly, by-the-way). Your whole essence speaks of kindness, love, acceptance, and of course, expertise. Thank you - more than you know.
They really should allow us to share presets! That would be very nice!
One of those youtube channels that I am hitting the "Like" button while the ad is still playing before the video starts - always the best content from Mr. Buck 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
@@tombuck Of course!! Actually - quick question for your expertise - I have my mic running through a Vocaster 1 audio interface using XLR - when I load up the Rode Connect/Central app, it is asking me to connect a rode device.
My question is if I connect directly via USB to make the updates to the sound profile, and then switch back to the XLR, will the sound profile save on the mic itself, or am I limited to the altering the sound within the Vocaster app?
Hopefully that makes some semblance of sense
I don't have the PodMic, RodeCaster, or anything like either of them. So it says a lot about you as a presenter that I watched the whole video anyway 🤣 Keep being podsome, Tom!
Dang, this absolutely makes my day. One of the nicest things I could hear!
Just put a tweet (or post or whatever X calls them) out about how helpful your channel is. THANK YOU for all you do!
Hey thank you so much! That really means a lot.
Tom is the reason I was able to start a podcast. His video showing how to record a podcast from start to finish, plus his Blue Sona and Rodecaster Duo reviews have me set up perfectly. Now 30+ episodes in.
@@rickycgarrett that's awesome. He's just a wealth a GREAT knowledge for this stuff. There are sooooo many scammers out there and people who consider themselves "experts" on podcasting but they really know nothing. Tom knows what he's talking about, actually helps everyone and doesn't have any sort of ego about it.
This is a very helpful tutorial =) lately i found out that, for me at least, is best to turn off Big bottom and exciter. I really like to mess just with the EQ. I know it sounds stupid to have the Rodecaster and not use them but I really enjoy the sound of my voice.
Yessir, to the De-Esser..........perfect
When you placed the thick and foamy WS2 windscreen on the Podmic USB it made it look and sound like the Mackie EM-99B. I had both of them and they're quite comparable as XLR mics. The Podmic offers USB capabilities and all the goodness of Rode Central and presets on the Rodecaster models, while the Mackie comes with the best desk stand I've ever used.
I didn't end up keeping either of those mics because I bought the NT1 5th Generation by accident around the same time, and instead of returning it I kept it after really loving how it sounds with my voice. But the Mackie is really a sleeper and great deal for anyone looking for an XLR-only broadcast-style microphone that won't break the bank.
Perfect timing; my podmic usb just arrived.
Like the change up in viewing angle!
Lewitt Ray version of this video would be great.
One of my favourite videos of yours Tom, so informative, absolutlely love it! Thank you! (Australian spelling)
Crickey! Thank you!
It’s the day glow green cable that makes the tone soooo good! 😉
Definitely the secret sauce 🤌
Possibly sm7b/rodecaster duo combo/setup/optimize video in the future?
Great tutorial Tom! I’m sure a tone of people are going be sounding better after watching this 👍
Thanks! I hope it's helpful!
Have my Podmic running through a Scarlett solo and this was helpful. Also digging the new set up!!
Glad it was helpful! And thanks for the kind words!
It would be great if the RCP could share screen. This would facilitate an external producer - vocal coach help you remotely with your settings. Also, I think it's great if you can live stream or Zoom to someone in their car (with a good audio system) so they can help you adjust the best settings for a listener driving down the highway.
I recently stumbled across your channel. I like it so much! So much good information in a concise and casual setting. Although I always chuckle at your puns, I also roll my eyes a little bit. But that’s all puns I guess. So sending much lover your way!
So glad you're here! And yeah, half the time the real "joke" is how bad the jokes are 😅
@@tombuckAlso, Perfect timing. My Procaster Duo arrives tomorrow. It will replace my ai1 that I used with my podmic. Never has a video been uploaded so perfectly. Wait. Are you reading my mind?! Stop Duo-ing that.
Sounds great! Yes, it is a very bright sounding mic (in common with the Shure MV7) sans processing, Thanks for the pointers.
Thank you, very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video Tom, fun and informative as always. The Before and After made a lot of difference and that PodMic was sounding way more "Broadcasty".
It would be great if you could do something similar using the DLZ creator, because why not? 🙂
Looking forward to when the Presets can be shared and we can get the "Tom Buck" sound.
That'd be fun! I've been trying to dial in an SM7B setting on the DLZ that I like. I've gotten close but not 100% there.
Great video. Hoping you can share where are you setting your audio levels to for live streaming -6 to -12 dB?
I'm usually a -12 person.
Thanks !! I have this exact combo and you explained some items in terms that I can apply to mine. Do you recommend a dust protector/cover for the Duo ?
Glad it was helpful! I have the RØDE plastic cover for both of my Rodecasters and really like it.
Great walkthrough Tom, and I also löööööve the camera angle! Are you still bouncing off of the ceiling, or isnit more directional with the softbox / grid..?
Thank you sir! This was a more directed light to try something a bit different 👍
Thanks for the guide. Maybe im the only one but I prefer your voice without edits on this mic. (but I must say I do prefer more high toned voices in general)
So much of it really is personal preference. I honestly can hardly listen to the default sound 😅
do you set the eq and stuff in the rode caster and then have the rodecaster go to your camera via audio cable? i currently go pod mic to rode caster duo to ZVE1 with no adjustments, then take file from camera into final cut pro and edit audio in there.
Tom this is one’s very helpful. While I like my Procaster without any tweaking I’d like to play around with it to see if I can improve the sound. Thanks.
My Vocaster isn’t quite as adjustable but at least they have made some good software upgrades. The problem I have is that the sound of my voice from the camera is different than when I add a voiceover directly into iMovie on my Mac. I assume this is because of the amp in the Canon camera is affecting the processing. From what you know is that a good assumption? Is there a workaround for the problem? Thank you for any help you can offer.
Great video as usual Tom 🎉
I bought the Rodecaster DUO, Shure SM7b, Elgato high arm, and Rode xlr cable because of your amazing reviews and walkthrough! My channel audio is better than ever now and can't be happier❤
Could you please do the same for Shure SM7b? It sounds great with broadcast preset already but I'm sure that you can do your own thing 🎉
I'm so happy to hear this! I actually used this video as a guide to create my own SM7B preset:
ruclips.net/video/U4hVGtdo5MY/видео.htmlsi=vzkSVaqrXj4DN-b3
I think this is better than any video I could make about it, so I just recommend going there 😁
@@tombuck Thanks Tom! Much appreciated
❤❤❤ Good job saludos desde Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
I love this channel
Thank you!
Hi, here it comes.. I have almost been binge watching you videos and some other RUclips channels for Podmic USB. Using Podmic USB directly to PC versus Rodecaster Duo. Is Rodecaster sounds better or using the mic directly is same. There is a pre amp in the mic. Although I have not received my Podmic and Rodecaster Duo yet. But after watching your videos I fewl I know everything about it already 😂
would most of these settings be applicable to a goxlr mini or full size?
Thanks Tom! My wife uses the PodMic for our podcast while I'm using the Shure SM7B so it will be nice to sound like we are on even playing fields lol. Also, is that Rembrandt lighting I see??? My moody lighting post must have worn off.
Haha it’s fun to try something new!
@@tombuck True! Also the colored windscreens are available for preorder on Rode's website now. Shipping in June.
Do you ever change the EQ Gain to Que and adjust, like EQ Sweeping? Because you can press and hold to change it
When will you be doing a new Q&A livestream? I need to ask some questions as I just got rodecaster duo lol
Hopefully soon! Things are just a bit busy at the moment but I love doing the streams.
What are your thoughts on performing the audio processing post-recording in Audacity or similar? I'm currently recording into a Zoom P4 and do all of my EQ-ing in post.
Software processing is great! Doesn't really matter which app, but spending a bit of time dialing things in, even with a light touch, can make a world of difference. I like being able to use the Rodecaster to process everything in real time and then be done with it immediately after recording, but it's all the same type of stuff you could do afterwards during editing. 👍
You got the Rode LS2. How are you liking it?! I had thoughts of getting 2 for my setup/live podcast upcoming, but decided to stick with my Fulaim low profile arms..
I’ve been liking it quite a bit. Not perfect but very sturdy and lots of versatility.
I’m getting the sm7b, should I invest in a Scarlett 4th gen or a good mixer I can adjust audio on the fly for podcast’s, discord calls and such without having a bunch of noise in the background.
That's a good question. It's really a matter of personal preference. If you like editing with software or don't mind that workflow, then the Scarlett is great. Personally, I do realyl enjoy having everything processed how I want as soon as I'm finished recording, so a Rodecaster/DLZ type mixer has been terrific.
When it comes to windscreen sound the best one is the newest sound from the podmic usb it doesnt sound too muffled or too high
Hi Tom. I'm looking for a good USB microphone for singing and recording at home. This is one of the best that I found but I need your advice for picking up the best one (Shure MV7+, Samson Q9U, Rode Podmic USB, etc). I just need a good mic to connect to my mac or ipad and record my voice singing and without the need to use extra gear. I will really appreciate your help.
Hey! To be honest, I think those are all good mics. For singing specifically I might lean more towards the MV7+ because it has a more neutral sound than the PodMic and the anti-clipping/popping software seems to be really good (this is just what I've noted in other reviews though, I don't have the mic myself).
Can you do this for the sm7b
I wish I could tell the difference as he adjusted the settings. 😢 totally new to this.
RODE sounds amazing with your voice AFTER you've dialed in the effects 100%
1. Will all these effect options be in the app via USB?
2. Can I save presets in the app?
3. Can you still get ALL those effects via USB?
Thanks!
1. Not all the options are available in USB, but many of them are. Definitely enough to get something you like.
2. In Rode Central, the settings will save to the mic automatically but unfortunately I don't think there's currently a way to make presets that you could swap between quickly.
Good morning, Tom…excellent video! I do have an ocasional podcast with a friend of mine, where she has a recent Pod Mic and she has the Rødecaster Pro II, , and for while we are having issues with her end generating echo…a bad echo, we cannot even remove in post; have tried multiple things, including me not using my Pro 1, and changing to the old Maonocaster Neo, not using my ‘possible’ knock off Shure SM7B and use all Maono, or even change myself to my old usb Blue Snowball straight to the Mac (neither of my interfaces will accept it), and still every time she enters on scene, we use Streamyard (sorry 😂), echo is coming again… what should we do?! God bless you and your family!
This almost sounds like a mix minus issue? She can double check that mix minus is turned on for whichever USB output is running to the computer and it might help!
@@tombuck Thanks so much.. that could be it: now is for me to explain that to her in rice and beans 😂 She accepted has no idea how to use the caster, but that could be the issue... thanks so much!! Blessings to you and your family!
@@tombuck I did sent her the video, so she can take advantage of your excellent information😇
I wish you would do one for the procaster (selfish request)
Honestly it wouldn't be too different, just with a lighter touch on the low end 👍
@@tombuck Ok, i will check it out. I ended up turning compression off because during my live streams it was so aggressive it made me as the host very low.
12:02 I would like to play with that audio panning feature there.
And oh, Plug in a tiny mic too. Hehe. 😅
Tiny mic FTW 😁
@@tombuck Because, Yep.
I’ve ordered it a few days ago, I “just” wanted to see how well perform is this tiny little mic. 😁
Very good tutorial although I must admit that the difference between out of the box and fine tuned isn't as big as I had hoped. Two questions:
1) Can you use two PodMics USB at the same time on the same macbook? I'd love to have a much more portable podcast studio than bringing a rodecaster (and only own MixPre-3 atm which is very nice too).
2) This is off-topic, sorry, but you might know this: How on earth do I easily record an iPhone conversation? Don't own the rodecaster anymore and when I did, it wasn't that great for the receiver of the call. But I'd love a low-impact solution without too much gear involved. Maybe a good topic for a future video?
1. With Rode's Connect app you can use up to 4 rode USB mics at the same time.
2. For phone calls, it's tricky. Without something like a Rodecaster there's can be a lot of quirks to not only record the audio well, but make sure that both people can still hear each other too. It honestly might be best to rely on a 3rd party app (even something like Zoom or Ecamm) and then record the conversation there.
@@tombuck Thanks a bunch! 2. This is actually a setup for recording iPhone meetings - not online meetings. Those are a no-brainer to record :) It's so strange that it is THAT difficult to just record a conversation.
I have a Scarlett and the original Podmic. I dont have rodecaster. What can I do to make the Podmic better sounding with what I have?
In this case it can all be done via software after recording. Adobe Audition and Logic are two awesome choices. There’s also Audacity, which is free 👍
Did you intend to have your shirt Headphones and mic cable match the colors of the lights on the rode caster? Also love the puns
Let’s say it was definitely intentionally and not a happy accident 😉
..with time, i agree more with "the content is the most important".. We can get lost in tweaking.. ..today i was hearing without headphones, and is hard to notice any difference..I think, a Marantz, would be a great mic to test.. ...i would guess you would have around an old a pc.. .It would be fun one day, to see an episode, of you poking around, with OBS(so powerful it became, that almost nothing else needed), DaVinci Resolve , Touch portal, Audacity, Streamyard....just to be demanding on paid software, when choosing.. ..
Definitely some incredibly powerful tools!
Can you do one of these for the MV7X
Haven't used it yet!
How did you get the volume that loud? I have the same mic and duo. My audio is always lower but is slamming on the meter
My gain was set around 48-50dB and then the channel fader was at the unity mark, so things were pretty good straight out of the duo. I did boost it by 4 or 5 dB in Final Cut just to get the levels I wanted. I do notice that the Rodecaster's exported levels are often lower than what I'm hearing while recording.
@@tombuck Same, Tom! Thought I was going crazy with this. My output volume always comes out lower than I'd like (sounds great while recording), which isn't a major issue when working in post. For video calls, livestreams, etc., though, it's kind of a pain. My only real complaint about the Rodecaster.
Recordings from my Rodecaster pro II s very low volume, even when gain is 55db. does anyone know how to deal with this?
I'm seeing I guess a Conan O'Brian hair poster in the background. New Conan Needs a Friend podcast show uses Shure SM7B and it sounds awesome can you make a video to show how can I make my shure sm7b sound just as good as that?
Haha, the Conan poster is from his "Legally Prohibited From Appearing on Television Tour" 😁
I don't know why kind of processing they do, but if you have a Rodecaster, this video is extremely helpful: ruclips.net/video/U4hVGtdo5MY/видео.htmlsi=vzkSVaqrXj4DN-b3
It's what I sued to create a custom preset that I absolutely love.
I had to EQ the new POD mic a lot more than the old mic for whatever reason. I don't have one (and honestly don't want one).
Interesting. I've found that they sound VERY similar, with the new one being slightly less harsh than the original. Could vary from copy to copy though?
Hey a bit one off, but any idea why the rotary knob light changes from green to white after a while? And where can you find info like this? there is no manual! very frustrating
The online user guide is pretty informative, but unfortunately nothing really comes in the box: rode.com/en-us/user-guides/podmic-usb
@@tombuck Its no help for the little things like lights around knobs etc LOL Thanks for the reply
Just found out that I can press the knob and it will go to the next dial when setting the eq
Compression seems confusing: Can't you do the same compression using equaliser by cancelling the highest highs and bumping up the human voice highs? Is there a set number of "bell" points or can you add more "bell" points to the equaliser?
The technical explanation is probably beyond me, but compression is more "holistic" opposed to an EQ which can be dialed in to focus on just a few specific things.
Sweet! Tom Buck video day.
Definitely needs processing …I need to re-review that one
I love the physical design, just not the default sound.
@@tombuck hard to beat the physical design and build quality.
And what part of your voice will be cut off if you activate the high pass filter at 70 Hz? I don't think this is teaching people the right usage scenario for a high pass filter.
You can definitely get more technical with it, but that's not what this video is for. The HPF eliminates lower frequencies, which helps with environmental sounds and certain voices. It varies depending on voice, so there's no definitive answer as to the exact setting to use.
Hi Tom. Congrats on yet another great video. What you explain in this one is perfect for when you're wearing your solo podcasting hat. But if you're like so many other people I know, you're sometimes wearing a different hat. When you're wearing your musical hat, you may wish to watch Joe in ruclips.net/video/YfIwSCjAKDE/видео.html for a totally different way to handle a vocal that differs from what you explained for speaking. Cheers!
That's odd for Rode. Usually the bass is over emphasis and the highs suffer. Interesting.
The PodMic has always been an outlier in this way, for whatever reason.
Man, the PodMic sounds horrible out of the box. Horrible! I can ALWAYS tell when someone is using one. Your presets making it sound better than I've ever heard it before after hearing it hundreds of times.
Hey Tom, love the videos!!! I have an audio question but can't seem to find a way to message/email you.
Thank you for a great tutorial. I also would love if you do the same for SURE SM7B to
