    I can understand why professionals consider these multifunctional mics to be expensive and unnecessary, when they already have a mixer and post production tools. For those of us who don't have a mixer, who want a mic that will work with both XLR and USB, this fits a clear niche. After looking at the price of the MV7, I really wanted to like this microphone. But the sound without the EQ is harsh and thin, very hard to listen to.

    I commented about it under one of your videos around a year ago, but this seems a fitting moment to do it again: FDUCE SL-40. Same functionality as PodMic USB at a *third* of the price ($60 on Amazon when i'm commenting). Solid metal build, looks great, no software. USB-C, 3.5mm and XLR out. Decent sound (to my ear). It's worth getting for a budget mic comparison. When comparable mics are 200-250 dollars it's odd not to hear it mentioned more.

    • @CARfariPark
      @CARfariPark 2 месяца назад +1

      I recently mentioned the SL-40 on one of Tom's livestreams. I bought 2 XLR versions just so I could have some inexpensive reasonable sounding mics for some client podcasts. Now that may sound counterintuitive but I wanted to be able to have some well made, lightweight gear that could be chucked in a bag, and carried on trains & planes, without risking damaging my SM7Bs or Procasters. Having recorded 4 casts using the SL40s, I love how they sound, with a bit of EQ via my Rodecaster they really punch above their weight, HOWEVER.... the biggest flaws in the SL-40 are now apparent after many hours of use.... handling noise is awful, they pick up everything - footsteps, desk noise, buttons on jackets - far too much! Secondly, the cardioid rejection is very unpredictable. They behave like a heavy noise gate has been applied. Sometimes they pick up cleanly, then on other occasions they simply fade out the vocal, it's not a fault as I have 2 mics and they both behave in the same way. All said and done, for a solo gig or personal hobby, the budget SL-40s are hard to beat, but the 'professional' qualities seen in mics like the SM7B or Procaster are worth the money, in the time saved in post-production.

    I like Big Bottom and I cannot lie... lol! Tom, you alluded tot his and I wonder if dual simultaneous XLR and USB output is the reason why the Podmic has two separate ports (as opposed to the NT1 5th that has the super slick combo XLR/USB connector).

    I wish the price was more competitive. Hard to know what the right price should be though. I am a Sennheiser profile owner and I am very happy with it. So it would have to be pretty close for me to want to "sidegrade". The combo XLR option and software I can say would add to the price a little. How about... 160? Come on, RODE!

    I love the q9u but the handling sound made me get the podmic usb instead but i dont know if I like how it sounds on my voice. The sm7b is my favorite but spending that much on a mic is kind of steep right now. I been messing with the settings and im somewhat satisfied with how the podmic sounds for my voice, like you were saying if it was like 20-30 dollars cheaper I don't think I would be 2nd guessing myself so much to be honest.

  • @lucas_92

    Great video, Tom! My two cents: If you want to save $, get the previous podmic and find the windscreen from the new one separately (save $70). For the same cost ($130), the Sennheiser Profile gives you way better sound quality and manual controls IMO. However, I do think the NT USB+ is hands down the best mic for the money currently, if you're willing to control it through software.

    Watching... watching.. and then the moment you switched to (my) MV7 haha, I'm home buddy 🙂 I was well aware that I's using the $150 price difference between the MV7 and SM7B for the funding of my next mic --> enter Earthworks SR314. I'm kinda strategic here because this mic will both suit the studio and livestreaming, as well as be my live mic. Now the ADHD kicked in, I went to re-watch Curtis Judd's video on the SR314, remembered he's just released a course about lighting, checked that out and.. bought it. Tweeted about it, went on doing something else, annotated that I should listen to your podcast while taking the train tomorrow... the time went and now I'm back here to listen to the end and, yeah, that's how my brain works.. or not 🙂

    Of the two Rode mics, the newer Podmic USB has a richer tone with no EQ. I noticed the same thing with mine compared, for instance, to the Shure MV7 which to my ears is way to bright without some serious EQ. At least for my baritone speaking voice.

    Hey! great review. I am a complete rookie and so I wanted to know if the "broadcast quality" means it's good for podcasts only. Could it be used for vocals (singing)? Because it appears to be the do it all mic. Even with it's inbuilt DSP EQ and all, plugging it into an speaker via a simple amp would be best for a little live performance.

    Being semi-retired, I just watch for fun. I had the original but the Procaster is yes more expensive but a much better mic. As a Consultant I have a case with 5 mic's so far one has always been the right one for the talent (The Pod-Mic isn't in the case) It has a purpose it a reasonably good intro mic. If your getting into Podcasting, pick up two with the Rodecaster and your set. Being old I only have one USB Mic for last minutes voiceover/correction (Opt-Cmd-8 in FinalCut) that would happen in editing (It the Earthworks Icon mini). I see the benefit of a combo Mic but you only need one. What Rode is doing is with it virual rodecaster and the USB mic may fit the kids today but I need physical knobs and sliders! To OLD to change...LOL

    I suppose It's because of very limited frequency graph of PodMic. Although PodMic's description says it supports up to 20 kHz, actually it supports ~13-14 kHz.
    Fun thing if you listen to Shure Super 55 then, I think you will dislike it too and will come to same conclusion (17 kHz according its passport, but according to actual graph it has about 11.5-13 kHz, thin low mid and harsh upper mids).

    I think from what I'm hearing from the PodMic USB, I would say it sounds good and it's even got an Equalizer app for it too so I can set what ever I like. 😊
    And I could set a reverb to it too for the wider stereo audio. 😁

    1:25 weird. Even though you said you rollled off rhe highs in your custom preset, it actually sounds to my ear like more highs were added.

    Ive heard some really good tuning for the USB version, usually they just turn the bass on via the app - either way I hope I made the right choice!

    How's the Rode XDM-100? I read so many bad reviews about it -- Noisy when headphones are plugged into it; a buggy Rode UNIFY software that got many users frustrated.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Has to be some post processing with them mics, the bass, the trebs are not like that out the box. Unless mine is dodgy. Your videos always sound great, this sounds pretty much the same as the other videos in terms of processing

      Rode sent it over last summer with some other cables and I’m not sure if it’s something they’re planning to sell or just something they happened to have on hand and tossed in the box 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Hi Tom, I got the Rodecaster Pro with a podmic microphone, they work amazing and its very easy to use it. On my headphones everything sounds very nice and loud but when I export it and hear it on my computer the volume is quiet low from what I was listenind on my headphones. Any suggestions?

    • @samfraulino
      @samfraulino 8 месяцев назад

      If you record in multitrack, it will always be low, the master compressor doesn't affect multichannel recordings only the Stereo file/

    Out of curiosity, If you were to choose between the: USB Podmic vs Podmic & Scarlett solo, which do you think would be the better pick for streaming?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад +1

      I would choose the PodMic USB. The Scarlett Solo doesn't have the best preamps, so you might find yourself also needing a booster. Plus the overall sound quality and EQ options via Rode Central are better with the PodMic USB 👍

  • @PaulMDiaz

    The pod mic gives that congested sound. Not good to listen to for long. The pod mic usb has a similar sound but the difference is not slight, Good video!

    Would it be possible to EQ the Podmic USB to make it similar sounding to the NT USB+? Really wanted a combo mic but I also prefer the sound of the NT USB+ better

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 месяцев назад

      Yes...sort of. You can do a lot with software and mixers (Rode Central is surprisingly powerful when it comes to EQ'ing the PodMic), but I don't think you can totally match the fullness and low end of the NT-USB+ with the PodMic. You can get VERY close, but not exact.
