Whether it's the PSA1+ or something else, I think it's 100% worth investing in a good boom arm. Here's a video I made that compares cheap vs expensive arms so you can see why: 📼 This video explains why it's a good idea to invest in a good boom arm💥💪 •Cheap vs. Expensive Boom Arms: ruclips.net/video/nsWxvD1MCck/видео.html
Tom, I am from Europe, and I have the Q2U Samson mic that weighs 318 grams. Can I still use this mic with the PSA1+, or will it be too light for it? Also, would the mic be too light for the older PSA1 in case I cannot get the more modern PSA1+ ?
What I am missing is the option to completely conceal the XLR kabel inside the arm of the original PSA1. If you use the mount that requires to drill a hole in your desk then you can run the cable trough the arm under your desk. This looks a lot better then attaching the cable to the outside of the arm with Velcro. The big new base plate might be fitted to existing big holes in your desk but these holes are typical completely at the back of your desk and most likely not at the most optimal place to mount the boom arm. For the best result you really have to dril a hole in your desk and run the XLR cable inside the boom arm.
The type of free product plqcement Rode attempts on this unit is unacceptable and their justification is an insult to any professional youtuber. A brand on the frame is worth money.
I'm glad that the only problem with this boom arm is the branding. I understand that it would be a deal breaker for content creators who use webcams (which I'm sure is most of them), but as someone who doesn't do any of that, it is simply a non-issue, so I'll probably end up getting it. Wonderful review, by the way. 10/10 review quality.
I thought it was important to talk about the branding since it is something super noticeable, but sometimes it seems like that discussion has dominated the comments. It's really an awesome arm overall and I've been using mine daily since I got it.
@@tombuck great review. Perhaps flag at the top of the video that you mention de-branding at 20. that you talk about how to remove the branding as that seems to be the problem for most ppl. Following your stuff - am also a drummer and drummers are usually no BS and have a great feel about hardware after setting up and packing down kits for years :).
Looks like they made improvements, but the RODE branding is a deal breaker. Even though I don’t do talking head RUclipss, but use it for Zoom, it’s still way too distracting. Sticking with the original.
Hey Tom I wanna just say that you have a really GREAT presence on camera with a great delivery. I expect your viewership will continue to grow to be huge because you are down to earth and great cadence makes it just easy to watch and you don't have those little quirks that most people have to annoy someone after watching several videos. I normally don't leave comments but I just felt this strongly and thought I should share just in case you happened to be checking the comments and needed to hear what a normal guy thinks of the job your doing. Keep it up Tom and good luck!
It really means a lot to hear this, thank you! I try to make the videos helpful, interesting, and at least mildly entertaining 😁 I really appreciate that you took the time to leave this comment, it definitely makes my day to hear something like this.
I just bought two of the PSA+ arms to replace two cheaper arms I bought before I got the PSA1 and realized how great it was. I haven't set them up yet, but I actually like the way the RODE logo looks. And with a lot of podcasts being livestreamed to RUclips, it makes sense that they would want bold logos on there to help promote their products. To me, the logos are totally fine. If it was a brand I didn't love, I could see that bothering me. But RODE makes probably the best and most interesting accessories and products. There are a lot of great brands out there but RODE consistently impresses me with their solutions to problems.
i bought psa1+ after watching this video, i made a video asmr unboxing the psa1+ in my channel, i hope those who are interested in this boom arm, visit my channel for a closer look it.
The desk adapter for the psa1+ that goes into that little section that's pre-drilled is like exactly what I need for my desk so this review was just perfect.
I've just purchased the PSA1 version instead of the plus. I was just about to buy when I saw this excellent video, and had no idea about the massive, bold, white branding, contrasting against the black like it does 😏 I'm slightly disappointed because the plus version is technically superior... but never mind.
Hmm i kinda like the branding, it’s the like clothing, got the branding on it looks often better, I get why people don’t like it but I don’t mind it at all
I've been using my PSA1 for weeks now... and it really is great... It holds position so perfectly. I can stretch it out virtually straight and it still holds position perfectly. I really do like the dual bar look too which is nice 👍
Being a longtime Heil Boom user, I really like the PSA1+. As for the logos, I used a black sharpie to darken the print, so now it looks like black vinyl lettering.
I'm sold, thank you for the review. I really like that you tried to remove the branding yourself, most reviewers would just talk about it, you actually did it so kudos.
Glad it helped! I went back at it with the solvent and an alcohol wipe and was able to entirely remove all the logos so you can’t tell they were ever there 👍
You can get the black on black affect for the logo by going over the letters with a black permanent marker. It doesn't affect the neoprene and leaves a subtle reflective surface. Again, the branding was the only thing about the arm I didn't like and now it's perfect.
Great video! That branding though, I agree. I would just use a permanent black marker and color the logo in, or make a Velcro slip cover for it. The lithium grease is genius, I use it myself.
The branding is definitely a deal breaker (I cover the Rode logo on my Wireless GO which is similarly obnoxious) but I'm sure custom sleeves will start popping up on the internet. Maybe Rode will start offering their own as well. Great and thorough review as always
@@tombuck Hey, don't take this as a criticism, just a comment from a guy with an a7SIII. Have you messed with the subject shift sensitivity setting? I noticed your focus jumps around when you're moving the boom arms across the frame and wondered if you tried the 0 or locked on setting
GREAT REVIEW !!! Very detailed explanation! I personally have the DecTron 20x18" Friction Series (Boom) Arm and it's made here in the USA and ultra durable and can hold up to 5+ lbs. So it can easily handle a heavy camera with a large lens. Not that I need for it to hold that much weight, but this arm is the highest quality, that is nearly indestructible. Works on Friction and holds it's place - No need for the loosening or tightening of knobs, a one time setup is all that is required to dial in the arms weight supporting capabilities. With no springs or rivets to loosen over time, this precision engineered arm will provide years of maintenance free performance. The retail on this is $339, but I was fortunate to get 3 on eBay for $69 each. An amazing deal! Keep in mind you'll need a pretty thick solid wood desk or a very sturdy wall mount (that you can purchase from DecTron for $69). You can get a Heil WM-1, if you can find one for around $29. All in all, I LOVE THIS ARM!, but the RODE PSA1+ comes in a close second. Again, great review.
The best part of this review for me was when you explained how to remove the obtrusive logo. If I was considering getting one of these that logo would be a deal breaker for me, well before your hack!
After making the video, I went back at it with the solvent and was able to completely remove all of the logos. I just used A LOT of solvent on each one and it was pretty easy. I rubbed them off using an alcohol wipe and it probably took about 15 minutes per logo. A paper towel will tear apart and a regular towel or brush can damage the sleeve, so a wipe works best. Now it literally looks like nothing was ever there, it's awesome!
I bought it, thanks to your extensive and honest review. Man, what a dream this thing is. I'm not using it as a microphone boom but for top down shots with my Sony A6500 camera. It works PERFECT. No 'legs' in the way, easy maneuverable, smooth, silent and strong and sturdy at the same time... definitely worth the money. Thank you @tombuck !
I'm a R0DE fan and I'm buying this arm. Thanks for the comprehensive review. I wonder if the branded covering can be turned inside out. I mean, if the cable stays go through a hole, can you take off the covering and then pull one end through the other end to reverse it? If not, then, for me, I would just cut off the covers. It's not like bare arms have never been seen before. And, thinking further, I wonder if a hot and close hair dryer and some tweezers will let you slowly pull away the vinyl letters.
7:47 YES! 100% agreed. Especially that new one is a pretty hefty piece of metal that requires some machining. And aside from that it adds weight to shipping. I feel like the mounting should be an option. So you can buy the arm and at check-out select either the clamp or the desk-hole-thing (and the price depends on the selected option).
Or maybe black gaffer tape. I keep hoping someone will do a video on whether there's a safe, effective way to completely remove the Rode logos from the MV7 or MV7X microphone.
Twisting the microphone to attach it has always been a pet peeve of mine because it feels really risky and I've dropped microphones before because I'm trying to take it off my stand quickly but whenever there's a separate locking mount, it really calms my nerves about dropping things (which I do way too much 😂)
The minimum weight the PSA1 can support is 700 grams, whereas the PSA1+ can support as low as 94 grams. Huge difference actually, and awesome for those of us with lighter mics.
when my sister started streaming I bought her PSA1 and Samson Q2U (it had amazing sound for it's price) and it kinda worked but the PSA1 squeaked. So .. I used some WD40 witch repaired the squeaking but now the Q2U was too light for it so I needed to buy some big iron nuts and taped them to arm with black tape so it does stay xD
wow, so do you think an SM58 (298 grams) would be bouncing all over the place on the PSA1? Am I obligated to get the PSA1+ if I want to use the SM58 with it?
The way how R0DE is showing their logos definitely is overkilled. As soon as I received and tested this new arm, I definitely will use a black marker to paint it over! That means it will defeat their purpose by putting their gigantic logos everywhere on the sleeves. Indeed, they should reduce the size of the logos shown on the sleeves and put lesser logos or may be even change the color to grey.
So I wished I watched this video before I bought mine. I took apart the mounting part that connects the Rode PodCast Mic to because of no information on how to put it back together. It took me an hour to figure out how to put it back together. So why did I do this. well the picture on the box showed the SLR cable going in between the end. I see yours is completely on the outside. Hmm! User Error is in full Active Mode Once More! Cheers!
There is a way to run an XLR cable through the actual "tubes" of the arm (both this and the original PSA1), but you have to cut off the connectors, run the cable, and then re-solder the connector. I've never had the patience to actually do it.
@@tombuck But the important thing is you are always switching mics around on different arms and what puzzles me is lack of instructions that goes with these products. Not even a PDF file to view on their website. Da I am an infant or truthfully an OLD FART and need to be directed every step of the way. My middle name is USER ERROR and am not proud of it. HELP is what I need in these situations or I am going to do a RANTING Video on "Why am I always buying Products that are expensive and I feel that I am not getting my money's worth out of it!!!!". Cheers! 🙂
Bravo Tom! I very much agree with everything you said, but most of all with your final thoughts. I am extremely happy with your intellectual honesty, sincerity and freedom in making suggestions on how to remove those intrusive logos. My sincere congratulations. This is the real key to your success. Ancora bravo! :-)
I didn't really think about it at first, but I started noticing the logos a lot more after you mentioned it and it was distracting. I like the idea of the custom sleeves and I'm looking into it to see how a product like that would go about being made. Would you be able to give me dimensions on what the current sleeve is with the holes?
The sleeves are 13.75" X 1.75" with a width of about 1/2". For what it's worth, I gave the solvent another shot after making this video and was able to totally remove all the logos. You can't tell anything was ever there 👍
@@tombuck One thing I noticed from the video was there looked like there was residue kind of staining the sleeve after the fact. Were you able to clean that up too?
Rode seems a bit stubborn. How hard would it be for them to provide an option? Doing that would give people what they want and let them figure out which one sells better.
I recently purchased the Elgato Wave Mic Arm for $99 and I was really surprised by the quality. It's meant for much lighter mics but I use an AT 4040 and it works well!
I purchased the Rode PSA1+ last week as of this comment. I reviewed a lot of boom arms and I settled on the Rode PSA1+ and I'm very happy with my purchase. The quality of materials used are premium in feel and use. I have the Rode Podmic and, no matter what position I put the boom arm in, it stays put and does not drop down like my old boom arm. The option to use the desk grommet is a nice option If you choose to to go that route when setting up PSA1+. Side note I also purchased the RodeProCaster 2 and it has leveled up my podcast. Now to what some think is an eye sore, the Rode logo on both sides of the neoprene covering, it doesn't bother me at all but I think it's extreme to cut off the neoprene just because you don't like the logo. The other thing about the PSA1+ is you can remove the mounting pole so you can route your XLR cable through the top mount for a clean look. That's my two cents for what it's worth. B"H.
I bought the Røde PSA1 a few months back and have been complimented on my studio by a few remote clients and colleagues. Glad to see Røde have created and updated their popular boom arm. Thanks for sharing!
I've been checking out the Rode PSA1+ and this video surprised me that the fabric was sewn onto the arm. I love Rode products, but think of the possibilities with custom fabric options. Thanks for the great video.
If they made the padding removable, it would definitely be great. Not only because of the branding logo, but also make it easier to clean/wash should it get dirty at some point since it is still some sort of fabric that can get stained. Also, making it easier to remove allows consumers to purchase replacement when it is worn out or even a 3rd party padding(maybe even able to DIY design the padding to including you own logo or design). But I think they are doing that to prevent existing PSA1 users to purchase the new padding to be use on the original PSA1.
They've definitely started upping the branding visibility. I understand it from a marketing perspective, but I'm not a huge fan of it form a user perspective.
I've used Rode mics professionally for many years, some might call me a 'fan boy' and I'd take that. I don't mind the branding on the arm, especially as my arm is rarely in shot anyway - but a bit of black paint or sharpie deals with it well enough, or vinyl remover as you did.
My take from this video.... I am changing my background for my forth coming live streams as I love the colour theme in your shows. I love my boom arm , a Sontronics. Its just slim and holds my Rode Podmic just fine. I have drilled it in to the desk today though after watching your thoughts. Thanks Tom (love the "English style corny" jokes)
The branding worked. People are talking about them, which draws attention and expands the number of people who now know about their boom arms. $2.00 in materials resulted in what could have cost much, much more in marketing. You could get some vinyl stickers made up with your logo/designs to sell as merch and place those over the Rode logo. I finally upgraded my super-cheap boom arm to a PSA1 a couple months ago and don’t regret it, but I’ll be looking at the 1+ in the future if I need any more. Thanks for the review!
Just got this myself today. I was tired of fighting with my Compass boom arm trying to keep it from continually raising no matter how much I tightened the tension. So far I’m enjoying the PSA1+.
@@tombuck very much so an upgrade. I should’ve heeded your warning a little more when you did the boom arm comparison video. I made a mental note, I just didn’t think it would be so bad that not even tightening the tension with pliers would be enough.
Thanks for all of the great details, and also for talking about those SUPER OBNOXIOUS Rode logos. Those gigantic logos are the reason I will never buy the MV7 microphone or this new boom arm, despite them being otherwise good products. The branding is just WAY too distracting, offensive and obtrusive. I like my PSA1 and really appreciate your thorough comparisons here.
Some people love big logos and others don't. I think you and I are on the same page in that we're not fans. It's just too distracting for me since I can't NOT read text on screen.
Great video! I'm late to the party, but I've just picked this up and managed to get a workaround on covering up the white logos that looks so good! I got some high-quality, hi-tac vinyl letters printed in both matt grey and matt black. I've tried both, and honestly, you can't tell they are vinyl stickers. They also stick perfectly to the existing vinyl print as well. I offset the logo by around 0.75mm to ensure there was no white showing from the existing logo, and if you take your time, the results are fantastic! I actually ended up going with the matt black as this was the more subtle look. It's well worth giving this a try if you're not keen on the white logos!
The logos are a 100% deal breaker for me as well. Even if it were the best arm on the market, I couldn't buy it. When I make RUclips videos I declutter everything I can to help the viewer focus. I put away coffee coasters and unplug charging cables to my keyboard and mouse, hide unnecessary stuff, etc. Just as you said I want the focus on an item I'm holding or something I'm saying. I guess Rode probably sees this working in the gamer community/twitch streams (vs "RUclipsrs"). BTW, I own 2 original PSA1s.
I agree- even though my space is full of stuff, I’m aware of everything on screen and I find logos distracting (one reason why I always try and wear plain clothes on camera).
Agree - though ordered one today anyway. At around 20min he shows a product to take the branding off. I kind of agree that there is a lot and it is high contrast. They should do a black on black version of the logo on black for things in sight - have seen this on some high end t-shirts etc and its the right degree of subtlety.
Yeah that branding is very in your face. Plus those sleeves seem to make a lot of noticeable noise when you adjust the arm. Not sure I like this design choice, personally. Good review!
The sleeves do make a bit of noise, but I can live with it. I jsut wish the branding were different. Part of me wants to cut them off just to see what will happen 😬
I'm only 30-seconds into the video and I already want to congratulate and thank you for the classical music accompaniment, and not employing the soul-rotting crap so many RUclipsrs use.
The PSA1 is a bit "aggressive" when you take a mic off. LOL. Truth, truthfully spoken. Thanks for the info and thoughts on the PSA1+. It's amazing how some little changes can really improve the user experience.
I'm not ever getting the PSA1+ for one main reason - you can't screw a clamped pop filter onto it. With the regular PSA1 I can clamp the pop filter onto one of the metal parts of the scissor arm and it works. With PSA1+ the clamp would have to grab the whole distance from one part to the other and that's usually too much. Also that distance changes when you move the arm up or down, so either your clamp will fall out or will block the arm from moving. Of course it's not a problem if you get a Rode shock mount that already has a pop filter screwed into it, but I already have both shock mount and the pop filter, I wanna use them without spending more money for new ones just because they don't fit.
I wen't back at it with the solvent that I mention here and it worked better! I just used a TON of it and then wiped the letters off with an alcohol wipe (paper towels shred too much and cloths/brushes scratch the fabric).
Just did the job! Really happy with the result. And yes, you need to use a lot of the solvent. I found that after initial removal of the lettering, padding the area with a clean cloth (and more solvent) got me the best result! Thanks again for the advice. Now it really is the BEST boom arm available in this price point! RODE...are you listening?
Great review. I started my Podcast a few Months ago and found your channel through that. I have probably watched every video now and really appreciate the quality and truthful advice.
I went back after this and used a lot more and was able to remove all the logos with no evidence that they’d ever been there. I put the solvent on the sleeve and then rubbed it with an alcohol wipe. Tougher cloths or brushes can damage the material, so this was the safest way.
I thought I’m the only one complaining about the LOGO lol, as a musician I love Rode but it’s just too big and too many of it LOL. By the way, there’s a cool new boom arm by Avermedia from Taiwan called BA311. Maybe you’ll be interested in it 🤣
Well what you were always able to do and what I have done with my psa1 was cutting the xlr cable, pass it trough the entire arm (and yes it also would fit through the desk mount because the metal that goes into the desk clamp is hollow) and soulder it together with the connector at the end which results in having a cableless microphone arm which looks amazing and you don’t have to use the just 3 included velcro straps. In my opinion the psa1+ with these sleeves looks worse than the old one but has nice and new features/improvements over the old one especially the actual microphone mount, really annoying with the tightening knobs. Nice and informative video btw, I have watched many of your videos and you kinda talked my into audio technology and especially microphones. Thank for all of that
The RODE PSA1 is great and the PSA1+ certainly have welcome improvements...but I have since switched to the Elgato Wave Mic Arm which in my opinion is better overall than either of them (the Elgato is also nicer looking)...although the PSA1 does seem to be more stable when you position it (out of the box)...whereas the Elgato droops a little depending on how high you position...not sure if it's because of the weight of the mic (I use a Shure SM7B) and I'm not sure if the tension of the Elgato can be adjusted...but it's not much of an issue for me and I am too lazy to look up anything on the internets which could potentially eat on my time spent on watching cat videos.
OMG, my PSA-1 started creaking a while back. Hadn't even thought of trying to fix it. Will have to look for this grease. Fun fact: Most people don't realize WD-40 is actually for cleaning for than lubricating.
Try WD-40 White Lithium Grease (spray) or similar. Just be sure to cover adjacent areas if spraying. BTW, fantastic for squeaking garage door axels (don’t spray the wheels themselves) and springs. It gets used more than regular WD-40 around the shop now.
I saw when this boom was unveiled and i was disappointed that they added the sleeves. At first, I thought Rode was making a complete tube style boom arm which would be amazing. But after watching your video, I like the boom arm more but still wish they would just make a tube style
It’s be interesting to see how they’d approach a tube style arm. I think the scissor design might play a role in helping to keep the mic’s position whenever it’s moved.
Love the Mozart Symphony 40 in g minor upgrade, by the way. I'm old enough to remember when Waldo de Los Rios scandalized my fellow Music Major classmates when he did his Disco version last century.
Tom, thanks for this very helpful video. I am a podcaster using a Blue Yeti condenser mic on the stand that came with it. I finally decided that it was time to get a professional boom arm as the mic stand was taking up desk space in my tiny home recording studio. I was about to press the buy button on the PSA I when I stopped and thought, "I better go check the reviews and demos on the new PSA I +." After your informative video, I decided to buy the new PSA 1 + . If Rode is listing I am a BIG Rode fan and really like the new Rode PSA I +. But the RODE branding on the new model is distracting to my viewers. Maybe you could leave the branding but make the letters a bit smaller and more muted in color. Say a lighter black or gray. But let me say that I use Rode equipment for my podcast and love the company and people who run it. They make it possible for a gray haired non techie like me to run a whole podcast single-handedly.
I'm glad the video was helpful! Hopefully you like the Arm, despite the branding. I was able to totally remove the logo with more of the solvent that I mention at the end of the video, but if the logo had been a subtle black I probably would've left it.
This is probably the last part of my audio setup I need to upgrade. I had a cheap neewer arm for the longest time and I watched a review saying the innogear arm was better than the psa1, but it is super rigid. It was just designed similarly to the the psa1 but it feels as rigid as the neewer. I love how fluid the psa1 is so I need to just purchase one already instead of fighting with my current arm to get it where I need it positioned. I love the idea of someone making custom Velcro wraps. I would definitely order one.
Excellent review. Love RODE. They know how to take care of their customers. The logo...yea...that's a bit too much. You can get a black kid's dress sock and cut it in sections and stretch it over the logos. Works great. If you can still see the logo through it, double it up.
I work really hard at my job too, but I don’t get to wrap my name on all my visual effects shots regardless of the 70 to 80 hours I work most weeks. My solution will be to take some scrap duvetyne and cover both sleeves with it (stitching it up real nice). Thanks for the video. Great product minus the obnoxious branding.
This was really helpful! I am going to get the PSA1+ now, I need one and I have the original. What I'd love is to find those rode clamp bases sold by themselves, there are knockoffs, but can't seem to find the real ones for sale. Thanks for making this video, I've sent this to a couple of audio buddies!
Am I the only one who uses the drill-in bit and who cut and re-soldered his XLR-cable to route it through the inside of the metal bars of the PSA1 (and the drill-in bit of the desk)? I thought that’s how you are supposed to use them, when you mount them on a permanent position? Nice video, definitely thinking about getting the PSA1+ when I should need another one in the future. And I will definitely get a sticker or another wrap for the arm, since I’m not really fond of the giant logo. (But I understand being proud of your stuff, so I get why it is there.)
Ultimately that's probably the slickest and best way to set things up, but it takes the most effort so it's not super common (at least that's what I think).
They’re from a site called reporterstore.com. I thought about painting them, but I think spray paint will eat away at the foam (plus it’s probably not great to have near your nose/mouth).
I literally just got my PSA1+ delivered and am super excited to set it up. I mus say I feel you when you talk about the "in your face" branding and it kinda' bothers me as well. But that was not a deal breaker for me. I did not have the PSA1 before so it was a no brainer to just go ahead and by the PSA1+.
Outstanding review, the logo on the neoprene sleeve is a deal breaker. Rode could charge the same price as the arm for a “add your custom logo” on the neoprene and we’ll have ten please.
The logo could be a deal breaker for me. They could make it without the logo and add one or two patches or stickers that the purchaser could add to it themselves. As you said, black on black lettering would be a good option.
I gave it another go with the solvent that I mentioned at the end of the video and was able to remove all the logos on two PSA1+ arms. Now they're perfect!
I'd try to use the black whiteboard marker pen.. It may have had maintained the visibility of the brand but be a bit "gray-ish" compared to the pinch black fabric.... Great video as usual!
Thanks Jeff! I've been using the Sony a7SIII since May (and I just got the FX3 two weeks ago). It took me a few months to adjust to Sony after using Canon for so long, but now I feel like I'm really starting to see the camera shine and I love it.
I bought it and TBH: I like having some text on the arm, as it makes it looking pretty nice, but I see the problem, when it comes to video footage. The arm is not a problem, as long as I am using my VTube avater, but it happens to be quite prominent in video conferences I have been doing with the arm. IMHO it really depends on the way you are using it, but having an option without the logo would be awesome, even if it just costs a few bucks more.
Thanks for the Video. I instead got the Elgato Wave Mic arm, which is - despite the name - not just for Elgato wave mics. It has imho a better fixing clamp, a way better way of cabling, fixed protection and can lift and hold my quite heavy Rode NT USB with spider and pop protection easily. It also has that function that it keeps the mic in the same position no matter if up or down.
Dude, I’m looking to buy a boom arm and it’s between elgato wave boom arm and the psa+. I was wondering if it breaks easily. I bought the nzxt boom arm and it broke because I accidentally pushed it the wrong way. Does the elgato wave break easily because that my only concern.
@@Uncle-Tomato That Elgato arm is rock stable. I would have no idea how to break it. I like so many things about it: the fixation to the desk is ROCK stable, there is a 10cm piece included which raises the lowest point of the arm up, the cable can very elegantly be hidden behind a plastic cover, no need to work with zip ties or anything. The sides are covered so that it is impossible to get fingers stuck. And it perfectly holds my not-so-light Rode NT-USB with spider. And it included the necessary adaptor for the base. I can really recommend it, after >1 month of use.
Hi Tom. Love your videos. You have helped me immensely in my research to upgrade my channel's audio. Thank you! Forgive me if you have already answered this question but I was wondering where you purchased your purple XLR cabling? Blessings! - John
The brand is "Dremake" on Amazon. They're alright- I've had a few cables need some desoldering, but they stand up to light usage just find and I love the way they look 😁
I don't personally hate the way the branding looks, but like, Rode worked hard on something to sell it for it's asking price. Not to create a new source of free advertising which is 100% what those logos are for.
@@tombuck that makes sense! Great video, it was awesome to learn about it. I have been thinking about getting one so thanks for the info. I’ve gotta find something to be able to put over those logos when mine comes. Ha ha

Hello; do you perhaps have a solution to a squeak in one of the joints?
What I am missing is the option to completely conceal the XLR kabel inside the arm of the original PSA1. If you use the mount that requires to drill a hole in your desk then you can run the cable trough the arm under your desk. This looks a lot better then attaching the cable to the outside of the arm with Velcro. The big new base plate might be fitted to existing big holes in your desk but these holes are typical completely at the back of your desk and most likely not at the most optimal place to mount the boom arm. The type of free product plqcement Rode attempts on this unit is unacceptable and their justification is an insult to any professional youtuber. A brand on the frame is worth money.
If u need a boom arm cover i can help you, i dont want to spam the web site there but if u want i can post it, tell me somthing in the coment.
I’m so glad you were able to “erode” the logo off.
If they made an automatic boom arm, would it be called the e-Rode?
@@tombuck Good one dad.
@@Sol-In-Seoul Just paint over it lmao
use some black gaff tape if you need it covered on. the cheap
I try to make the videos helpful, interesting, and at least mildly entertaining 😁
I really appreciate that you took the time to leave this comment, it definitely makes my day to hear something like this.
What kind of quirks are you talking about?
I just bought two of the PSA+ arms to replace two cheaper arms I bought before I got the PSA1 and realized how great it was. I haven't set them up yet, but I actually like the way the RODE logo looks. And with a lot of podcasts being livestreamed to RUclips, it makes sense that they would want bold logos on there to help promote their products. To me, the logos are totally fine. If it was a brand I didn't love, I could see that bothering me. But RODE makes probably the best and most interesting accessories and products. There are a lot of great brands out there but RODE consistently impresses me with their solutions to problems.
Rode really does kick butt. I’m glad you like your arms!
i bought psa1+ after watching this video, i made a video asmr unboxing the psa1+ in my channel, i hope those who are interested in this boom arm, visit my channel for a closer look it.
Hope you like it so far. How wide is the desk clamp, I wonder? I have a desk that is around 3 inches thick. I wonder if it fits.
The desk adapter for the psa1+ that goes into that little section that's pre-drilled is like exactly what I need for my desk so this review was just perfect.
It's such a cool design!
I've just purchased the PSA1 version instead of the plus. I was just about to buy when I saw this excellent video, and had no idea about the massive, bold, white branding, contrasting against the black like it does 😏 I'm slightly disappointed because the plus version is technically superior... but never mind.
The regular PSA1 is awesome! I'm sure you'll get many years of use out of it 👍
Hmm i kinda like the branding, it’s the like clothing, got the branding on it looks often better, I get why people don’t like it but I don’t mind it at all
I've been using my PSA1 for weeks now... and it really is great...
Oh nice you actually tried the Sharpie trick! That's awesome.
@@tombuck Yeah, it took some time... had to apply multiple layers of ink to get a good clean finish.
Do you recall how many layers you had to put on? Mine is arriving today, so I'm interested in this solution.
I'm sold, thank you for the review. I really like that you tried to remove the branding yourself, most reviewers would just talk about it, you actually did it so kudos.
Glad it helped! I went back at it with the solvent and an alcohol wipe and was able to entirely remove all the logos so you can’t tell they were ever there 👍
Black sharpie to the logo for that matte black look. 😎
You can get the black on black affect for the logo by going over the letters with a black permanent marker. It doesn't affect the neoprene and leaves a subtle reflective surface. Again, the branding was the only thing about the arm I didn't like and now it's perfect.
I'm glad to know this works! People have recommended it, but you're the first person I know of who has actually done it.
Or it's a great reason to add your own branding to cover the Rode logo.
Great video!
That branding though, I agree.
I would just use a permanent black marker and color the logo in, or make a Velcro slip cover for it.
The lithium grease is genius, I use it myself.
Giant Rode letters are a little off putting, but Thursdays are always the best! Great video Tom!
The branding is definitely a deal breaker (I cover the Rode logo on my Wireless GO which is similarly obnoxious) but I'm sure custom sleeves will start popping up on the internet. Maybe Rode will start offering their own as well. Great and thorough review as always
I would love the custom option. I feel like there’s definitely an opportunity there 👍
Uuu. That would be nice, a custom sleeve from Rode...with their logo :D
Thanks for the recommendations! I'll have to check them out- I would love an arm that I can trust a camera on.
Good Idea
I'm a R0DE fan and I'm buying this arm. Thanks for the comprehensive review.
I wonder if the branded covering can be turned inside out. I mean, if the cable stays go through a hole, can you take off the covering and then pull one end through the other end to reverse it? If not, then, for me, I would just cut off the covers. It's not like bare arms have never been seen before. And, thinking further, I wonder if a hot and close hair dryer and some tweezers will let you slowly pull away the vinyl letters.
It would seem so. I'm surprised no one has shown themselves turning one inside out yet, or trying to.
*The boom that's right for your room.*
That's a good idea! I love the desk grommets, but I've rarely used them, so I do have quite a few lying about that I feel guilty for not using.
This creates issues with the logistics when you give people options to customize.
Bought the original one today. Much preferred the minimal branding and it's been around for so long 😃
12:41 You can do this with the original PSA-1 too. Just untighten the knobs and grab turn the bolt from the other side where there's a thicker part.
Logo hate? No problem, it's why God created black Sharpies...
Stay Sharp, Tom!
Or maybe black gaffer tape. I keep hoping someone will do a video on whether there's a safe, effective way to completely remove the Rode logos from the MV7 or MV7X microphone.
Twisting the microphone to attach it has always been a pet peeve of mine because it feels really risky and I've dropped microphones before because I'm trying to take it off my stand quickly but whenever there's a separate locking mount, it really calms my nerves about dropping things (which I do way too much 😂)
I'm definitely NOT a fan of that. This is so much better than twisting an expensive mic around!
I agree 100% about those 4 gaudy distracting logos. The first thing I would do is bring the out black electrical tape and cover them up.
The minimum weight the PSA1 can support is 700 grams, whereas the PSA1+ can support as low as 94 grams. Huge difference actually, and awesome for those of us with lighter mics.
Wow, I didn't realize it was that much of a difference! That's huge. It's definitely easier to balance just about any mic on the PSA1+.
when my sister started streaming I bought her PSA1 and Samson Q2U (it had amazing sound for it's price) and it kinda worked but the PSA1 squeaked.
Thank goodness
Yes this is the best. Smooth Like Butter
Smooth like butter, but with fewer calories 👍
The way how R0DE is showing their logos definitely is overkilled. As soon as I received and tested this new arm, I definitely will use a black marker to paint it over! That means it will defeat their purpose by putting their gigantic logos everywhere on the sleeves. Indeed, they should reduce the size of the logos shown on the sleeves and put lesser logos or may be even change the color to grey.
Maybe they could just include decals in the box and then people who want the logos can add them on 😁
So I wished I watched this video before I bought mine.
Thank you! It means a lot to hear this. I try really hard to make the best videos possibly and explain things in a clear and mildly entertaining way 😬
I didn't really think about it at first, but I started noticing the logos a lot more after you mentioned it and it was distracting.
Elgato really makes some excellent stuff, and they've been forcing everyone else to up their game a bit recently. It's great.
It’s tough to go wrong with a PSA1 👍
I'm definitely curious about the durability in tougher environments.
Rode has been putting their name in bold on everything lately.
Hey Andrew, did the sharpie thing work? Just ordered one and was wanting your opinion on the looks.
@@BlueLineVibes A couple of coats seem to work - it's still visible but not so 'in your face'.
Thanks for the kind words! And for bringing up the Sontronics- I'll have to check it out!
Another life hack is to built your own cover thing for your old psu and with ur own brand on it :P
Love how you do a TL:DR: before delving into the nitty gritty. I still watched the whole thing though but appreciate putting the summary up front!
Thank you! It really means a lot to hear this! Glad you stuck around after the initial "spoilers" 😁
I bet it's a very nice upgrade over the Compass. I definitely know what you mean about "fighting" with it 😬
@@tombuck very much so an upgrade.
Just sharpie it lol
@@tombuck could you find a sleeve to replace the rode branded one?
Agree - though ordered one today anyway. At around 20min he shows a product to take the branding off. I kind of agree that there is a lot and it is high contrast. They should do a black on black version of the logo on black for things in sight - have seen this on some high end t-shirts etc and its the right degree of subtlety.
@@tombuck I like logos if I see something I like and want to buy I already know the brand
I've been smacked in the fact one too many times by the PSA1. I've learned my lesson 😁
@@MSladekPhoto the PSA one chooses violence when you take it out the box
That's a really good point. It's definitely tougher to use and adjust those with it.
Hey, Tom. I noticed in a recent video that you managed to 'remove' the logo. Would love to know how you did it!
I wen't back at it with the solvent that I mention here and it worked better! I just used a TON of it and then wiped the letters off with an alcohol wipe (paper towels shred too much and cloths/brushes scratch the fabric).
@@tombuck Cool. I've ordered the solvent...I'll let you know how I go!
WOW! Thank you so much! I'm glad it's been helpful and congrats on getting your podcast off the ground 🎉
The new rode PSA1+ looks amazing but the big sticker with RODE on it I’m not a big fan
OMG The logo removal recommendation was so funny and so useful!! SUBSCRIBED JUST BECAUSE OF THAT!
I went back after this and used a lot more and was able to remove all the logos with no evidence that they’d ever been there. I put the solvent on the sleeve and then rubbed it with an alcohol wipe.
Tougher cloths or brushes can damage the material, so this was the safest way.
The quarterback dad joke is underrated 😄
I will definitely pick one up. I plan to have my own branding printed or stitched, onto a patch and just cover their logo lol
That would be super cool! Some more time with the solvent eventually removed all the logos completely.
I thought I’m the only one complaining about the LOGO lol, as a musician I love Rode but it’s just too big and too many of it LOL. By the way, there’s a cool new boom arm by Avermedia from Taiwan called BA311. Maybe you’ll be interested in it 🤣
Thanks for the recommendation 👍
Yeah that’s crazy big o.o I sold my shure MV7 for that reason. In video it’s like the boom arm is seeking attention ^^
All that branding is so unnecessary
that Avermedia arm seems to have the same construction/design as the Blue arm which I hate with a passion...hopefully it's better.
Have you considered spray-painting yours?
I came across that boom arm the other day and just bought it because I really liked the look, after using it for a few days now I’m more than happy :)
So happy to hear that! A good boom arm can really make things a lot easier.
Thank for all of that
This has always seemed like a super cool idea. Definitely something I'd like to try one day.
Thanks for the honest review. I am buying the rode PSA 1+ arm.
It’s great! I’ve used mine daily since making this video and I love it.
We can't interfere with cat video time- it's a priority. And elgato definitely make some really great stuff- I love my low profile arm from them.
Don't have a mic or a boom arc, but I like watching these videos.
I really appreciate that! It means a lot that you'd spend your time watching my videos 👍
OMG, my PSA-1 started creaking a while back. Hadn't even thought of trying to fix it. Will have to look for this grease. Fun fact: Most people don't realize WD-40 is actually for cleaning for than lubricating.
I've been fighting the WD-40 misinformation for years 😁
(made the mistake too many times myself)
@@tombuck Yeah, me too.
Try WD-40 White Lithium Grease (spray) or similar. Just be sure to cover adjacent areas if spraying. BTW, fantastic for squeaking garage door axels (don’t spray the wheels themselves) and springs. It gets used more than regular WD-40 around the shop now.
Motorcycle chain lube will also work - same principle, and a lot of these are just lithium grease too.
It was formulated to drive out water moisture !
**screams at his monitor** DONT SPRAY THAT IN THE STUDIO...lol
Haha, don't worry there wasn't much and it wasn't aimed at anything besides the arm 😬
That version has been stuck in my head after editing this video 😁
logo too big~
Rip off the sleeve like i did
Put black electrical tape over the logo. Problem solved. Got the same arm and really like it.
I was able to totally remove the logo with more of the solvent that I mention at the end of the video, but if the logo had been a subtle black I probably would've left it.
they missed a trick here, the could of allowed people to remove the sleeve and purchase custom ones.
I would love custom sleeves. It’d be super cool!
Actually, I think you're right on point. As you were describing the stand I kept thinking, "Man... those logos are distracting as hell."
The most awful branding
It’s a bit…much.
Either version of the PSA1 is totally worth it 👍
I don't like the logo.
Is the sleeve reversible ? Maybe once reversed it's still good looking and maybe without logo ?
Nope, they’re sewn on with rigid material inside. 😕
@@tombuck ok so I think they just created a market for over-sleeve that could be attached over original one with velcro 😀
Etsy shop idea is super cool. Nice review, Tom.
Thanks Will! I've since seen a few people put custom patches/decals over the logos and it looks pretty nifty.
Really great vid, Tom. Everything explained perfectly 👍
Are you saying that I'm good at...rambling?
@@tombuck hahaha, you know you're my Yoda.
As far as I know Rode doesn't sell them separately, but I agree! They're super good and I could definitely use some extras.
Take a black sharpie and mark up the "damaged" parts on the cover
Wow!! Poked in the eye, pinched fingers, slapped by spring tension... sounds like a great day in the studio
Business as usual 👍
Thank you for the amazingly detailed demo. Placed an order straightaway eventhough its a 2yo vid.
Glad it was helpful!
@@tombuck The arm has arrived. Its truely amazing. Loves the quality and accessibility, 150% fits the description from the vid. tyvm
Thanks for the great review. I'm tempted to just make my podcast logo into a patch and sew it on over the rode one.
That would be awesome!
Did you spray paint those sm7b windscreens? They look pretty cool
I hope you like the arm!
Outstanding review, the logo on the neoprene sleeve is a deal breaker. Rode could charge the same price as the arm for a “add your custom logo” on the neoprene and we’ll have ten please.
That would be awesome. The current one is wildly distracting.
That could work! I'm thinking of taking an airbrush to the part that I removed the logo on and seeing if I cna touch up some of the marks.
I may be on the Rode to getting one! Perhaps I will logo of my old one once I do!
I hope this video armed you with some good info 💪
Boom it did!
I am reluctant to SPRING for it with the obnoxious logos.
Awesome video! For the branding, I will have the alterations personnel make me a black velcro band that will cover the "RODE" logo. Too easy.
Just got one for Christmas today! How the heck are your videos so clear and crisp also??
Agreed! Maybe you saw it recently, but there’s a Saberspark video about how VTube technology works. Super awesome!
Just bought the Elgato Wave Boom Arm. Best one I’ve ever owned.
I've heard lots of great things about the Wave! I like the Low Profile a lot, so I'm sure the tall one is great.
Great video. Comprehensive, honest, and informative. Cheers!
Thank you! I'm happy I was able to transfer a bit of knowledge 😁
Thank you so much
I’ve been waiting for this video! As soon as I saw it I knew you had to be waiting to get your hands on one. Great video! Thanks Tom!
Thanks Bobby! I wanted to make sure I had plenty of time to use the arm before making the video, especially since I like the original PSA1 so much. 👍
@@tombuck that makes sense! Great video, it was awesome to learn about it. I have been thinking about getting one so thanks for the info. I’ve gotta find something to be able to put over those logos when mine comes. Ha ha
Might be worthwhile as an upgrade over my cheap On-Stage Stands boom arm which doesn't seem to have enough tension for something like the NT1.
You'll definitely notice a world of difference between the two. 👍
I agree a way to customize the sleeve with logo or social media info would be cool. But if was at least reverseable would be nice
I agree 👍
