I have to applaud Rode on stepping up there game, The current market is flooded with "good enough" mics, and justifying any price increase will require an increase in quality and features
Just wanted to say thank you, your video was the final deciding factor I needed to pull the trigger on the PodMic USB. Very happy with it so far and am excited to have something that is ready for me when it is time to look at XLR interfaces.
Because of you, I got this killer mic and it's been my favorite since out of the box. I've also been utilizing the rode unify software with it and it's really good. That being said, this is one killer microphone. I like it better than my procaster.
I have the at2040 due to my rooms poor sound treatment, also it was on sale and cheaper than all of the competitors, however after learning more about this one I'll be sure to pick this one up in the future, I was fascinated to learn about the podmic upgrade and I can't wait to try it out myself.
Great review. Thanks for taking the time to put them side by side. The new ‘clown nose’ makes a big difference for sure. And btw. Your motion graphics kick this video UP a couple notches. Well done. And thanks again!
This looks it could be a winner for RODE. The price of entry isn't too high, either. They are coming out with some intriguing options. I'm pretty set for microphones, but still find this interesting.
I was afraid that one side was going to be favored when it comes to the xlr/usb mics. Most other mics with the same xlr or usb connectivity seem to have favored the usb in my experience leaving the xlr just "ehh". RODE of course never disappoints as that doesn't seem to be the case here. Great video! - Antics
I agree, it's a good deal, but I still kinda feel it should be priced a bit lower. For $50 less, you get the comparable XCM-50, and only $50 more gets you the XDM-100. It's only a great deal if XLR capability is important to you. (It is to me, bit I'll still wait for a sale or price drop.)
I would say for people that want the dual outs, that $50 does make sense. And you are right, the XCM50 is a great option too, though it is a condenser. That said, I love the sound of it.
Upgraded from a blue yeti desk microphone and brought a few desk stands, a rode boom arm and a little nifty XLR A1-1 USB interface. I chucked in some rode headphones as well seeing as I was just using my old Xbox gaming headphones.
I want to hear the podmic usb without the windscreen with the original and if they fixed how thin the mic sounds the further you're away from it. I love how it sounds in usb mode
Being a former disc jockey on the radio for years, I like an end-address mic. Right now, I have a Rode NT USB+ (side address) and I really, really like that you can turn on various effects such as Big Bottom using the Rode software. But, I would rather have an end-address mic like this Podmic. BUT, I cannot find a review that confirms that I can save the way I can make it sound using things like Big Bottom to the mic like I can do with the NT USB+. I hear that it can be used with the Rode Central app, but I want to hear that you can use the settings like Big Bottom and Compressor and the Aural Exciter and save it to the PodMic so that it can retain those effects even when just connected with an XLR connector.
I have had usb and xlr mics.... honestly, i think xlr and mixers are soooo unnecessary and, especially for the mic, in my opinion the usb connection actually sounds wayyyyyy warmer and clearer! idk why people tend to go for xlr mics with mixers! is it really that much better quality?? from my experience, they are just more work! my shure sm7b, i never really cared for it! there was always this static/hissing in the background no matter what i did! but my rode usb mini did a wayyyy better job with sound quality even though their "built in" pop filter was really not that great!
I could not see any difference between the sound quality of USB-C output microphones and the sound quality of XLR microphones. In fact, USB microphones are much better in terms of portability and ease of use. I say this as someone who also does dubbing.
It is fantastic. I use it via USB with the DSP stuff enabled, combined with an Insta360 LINK usb C 4k tracking camera. What a great setup! With zero external interface devices, such as audio shaping or video capture. Highly recommended. BTW, I have mounted the PodMic USB on a C Stand(!), due to its weight, as my mic stands kept wilting. LOL.
Nice video comparison. I just tested the XLR version and now picked up the USB version. Is the XLR close to USB sound, regarding deeper audio for XLR. I still think the XLR sounds a bit better. What do you think? Cheers! 💪
I like the OG, I have a few of them. This new one looks very solid and I especially like the new windscreen. I sent a message to Rode about them releasing it and they said not at this time but they would let me know. I was very disapointed.
I have the Pod Mic connected to a Rode Ai-1 interface. This is about as fancy as I’ll probably get with my setup but I’m always looking at simplifying. Would you say the new Rode Pod Mic USB alone can replace my setup if I’m just plugging it into my computer via USB?
Aussies, they call it a windshield, and Røde doesn't offer PodMic's as an accessory. Your best op is to write them on their Support page, where I've had luck getting unlisted parts from forward thinking companies like this one.
Good afternoon! Congratulations on the content, excellent! I need your help with a question. I want to buy the Rode Podmic USB. As it also has XLR mode, I thought about buying a Fethead to use it on my Focusrite interface (1st generation) to give it more boost. Could using Fethead in this mode harm the microphone? Thanks!
Great video!! I want to buy it but I am still unsure about going Podmic USB or Shure MV7. I would use them with USB in my laptop and my iPhone. What are your thoughts on that?
Only if you have a rode interface. Once you move over to XLR...you lose the ability to control the signal. The Rode interfaces allow you to still control it
Hey very good video. I was looking to pick up this mic but I was wondering if you might have a good recommendation for a Table stand style mic. The table i use has a weird edge to it were boom arms dont really work. So was hoping to find a good table stand/ shock mount that would work with it any help would be great ^_^ thanks again liked the video
Yeah... I get the prospect, but I was actually thinking about something cheaper at first. This seems like a fine choice due to the HZ range and quality.@@DarkCornerStudios
The price should have been $150. An additional $100 for just digital conversion is too much. Not to mention that unlike Rode NT1 5th gen, PodMic USB has just 24-bit flow. Even Rode VideoMic Go II with both analog and digital signals is often sold for cheaper than $100-the price includes both a digital converter and the mic with headphones support. $200 for the PodMic USB is just too much. Rode became greedy and packed older tech as something new. And the fact it tries to sell 24-bit flow for the price just paints the company as one out of touch. It stopped being a company that respects users and became just a hustler that tries to sell crap for high price.
Also...24 bit isn't old tech. It is an industry standard. 32 bit float isn't even widely adopted in DAWs. This thing is competitively priced among decent combo mics
I really apreciate your reviews. Thanks for the great work. I want to replace my Blue Yeti, but I can't decide between this Podmic USB and the Shure MV7. What of these twi mics do you recommend as better USB for a person without audio knowledge like me?
Do you have a USB C SETUP for sound? I have only found videos where they only use XLR audio interface setups ect. What is the difference? Any help would be appreciated, cheers.
I'm actually planning to get this to replace my Elgato Wave DX. I picked up the Elgato Wave DX a few months ago and i thought it was what matched my voice only to find out months later it doesn't. My choices back then was the Wave DX or the Rode PODMIC. Now that Rode released the PODMIC USB version and its in black, the features and its capability definitely one up'd the Wave DX. Hopefully it becomes available soon in the Philippines.
I will buy one most likely near the end of August though. I wanted a PodMic, but buying into the infrastructure of the Dynamic Mic was expensive. This would allow me to buy into it and then down the road look at the Streamer X later.
Thanks for the video! I just picked up an Shure MV7X yesterday and am now debating on swapping it for this new Rode Podmic USB because I am a bit disappointed with the plosive rejection. I can't say USB connectivity is very important to me as I am using XLR on a Vocaster Two as I get started. Any advice on what you'd prefer between the Shure MV7X and the new Rode Podmic USB would be appreciated!
Podmic ALL THE WAY Comes down to the software suite that Rode offers. No contest. As for the plosives...try repositioning the mic about 45 degrees and pointed at the corner of your mouth
From someone that has the mv7 as well im getting this rode one! The mv7 has phone features to use with phone but it is a hastle and doesn’t want to work half the time!
As others have mentioned, the MV7's default pop-filter is rather infamous for the poop plosive protection and most reviews/discussions I've seen about the mic mention it as the one major negative. Almost everyone's solution is to just replace it with the SM7B's RK345 which goes for like, $15.00 most places, so not too hard to fix if that's truly the only issue you have. That said, this new Podmic do be lookin' pretty nice... 👀

How would you compare this to the Rode XDM-100? Both have onboard DSP & work with Rode's software, but the PodMic USB has XLR AND USB and is $50 cheaper... Is it possible to connect via USB to the computer, engage the (say) Noise Gate, then connect via XLR and have the on-board Noise Gate still be active?
Can you use both USB-C to the computer and XLR to another device at the same time? I'm doing Zoom from my laptop and also recording to my phone with iRig 2.
Would you be comfortable recording vocals with the PodMic USB? I am looking for a Dynamic Microphone for around $200.00. Thank you kindly and great work .
This is a very well presented review. I was originally looking at the Shure, but I'm going with this instead. I'm about to retire and I'll be producing and presenting a show for a local radio station highlighting recordings from the past, highlighting my 78 record collection with items going back to 1898.
Well author, I watched your two videos about this microphone and I'm thinking to buy its first version for 100 bucks, I need it for video recording and tell me how it picks up noise if not hard. Tell me if Steinberg UR12 sound card will work well with it?
I’m thinking about getting the sm7b or re20 due to the fact that my room gets noisy mainly from outside noise besides my fan which should I get? I’m using the wave xlr and my voice isn’t deep
A lot of this mic are defective. A bunch of them die after some time and a lot others (via USB) keep disconnecting. Have you ever had this problem? This mic is really good, but it has become a nightmare for a lot of people. Really sad!
rode likes you, can you get rode to sell the windscreen as an accesarie. (however you spell that) it would be amazing. the clown nose works well for the podmic, but this one looks amazing!
Hey Chief! Do you have an idea why my PodMic USB is much quieter now that I’m using XLR compared to the USB-C? I’ve got a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 3rd Gen, which arrived yesterday and I’m a bit puzzled 😄
Thought about the Scarlett 4th gen or maybe the Volt 2? Read some good things about the Volt 2 when I tried to figure it out what the problem is with my current setup 😅
I mean, it shouldn’t be the case that I need to crank it up almost all the way to the max… I think I need something different, just thought the Scarlett is the right step for my first audio interface

@chrisdorsch9754 tough call...this would work...but can't confirm how good it will be
@@DarkCornerStudios Thank you kindly. I am really enjoying your channel.
Omg! Love the review … AND the entertainment 😊
That's sweet of you to say!!
What video editor do you use is awesome
Premiere PRO.
I just purchased an asset pack
@@DarkCornerStudios Can you please point me towards the asset pack so i can purchase, thank you.
@@JoseAnayaTV it's through motionVFX
Just search for MKBHD.
FYI though...these things are brutally hard to run...and will slow your edit WAY down
@@DarkCornerStudios Thank you kind sir!!
This is a very well presented review. I was originally looking at the Shure, but I'm going with this instead. I'm about to retire and I'll be producing and presenting a show for a local radio station highlighting recordings from the past, highlighting my 78 record collection with items going back to 1898.
This thing should treat you well!
Maybe I missed it,
but 2:49 does that external pop filter come with it? Never mind about the internal pop filter.
Yes it does!
@@DarkCornerStudios ooooo sh)t thank you :)
Well author, I watched your two videos about this microphone and I'm thinking to buy its first version for 100 bucks, I need it for video recording and tell me how it picks up noise if not hard. Tell me if Steinberg UR12 sound card will work well with it?
is it better than a shure mv7?
Can you please help me choose the right microphone? I'm confused between these two options. Thank you!
Which two?
Podmic usb everyday all day
@@DarkCornerStudios May I ask why you pick that microphone the USB 1 I need to know Because I'm too confused big time
@kingpaco87 best mic at its pricepoint. Hit me up on the live I can go further into it
@@DarkCornerStudios Yes sir I never miss your live When did you go on Sir
I can’t find the clown nose anywhere that you’re using. Any links for that?
It comes with the podmic usb.
I think Rode is planning on selling it separate soon
@@DarkCornerStudios ordered just in time then!! Used your link as well.
@@codythep I appreciate the support!
a bit late, but what would you say vs the samson q9u?
There is no need to watch another video review; it is concise and to the point. Moreover, he didn't waste our time by throwing an empty box around 🤣
HHEHEHE it's podcastage
@@HarryShares I recognize a true aficionado 😆👍
Can you rig 4 of these to work simultaneously via USBc to phone or laptop?
Yes.
As long as you have the usb inputs...you can use it with Rode Connect!
Fantastic review 🎉
How does this feature against Zoom ZDM1 and Sennheiser profile usb microphones?
How about that mic vs. an MV7
Yeah, maybe I will run that video out
Good idea!!
@@DarkCornerStudios looking forward to it
What do you think about rode xdm-100?
I love the X lineup.
It is a changes though...lol.
The xcm50 and xdm100 are both fantastic mics
The link isnt to that mic
PODMIC usb/xlr or Shure MV7?
Podmic by a mile
@@DarkCornerStudiosThanks for the quick response.
I’m thinking about getting the sm7b or re20 due to the fact that my room gets noisy mainly from outside noise besides my fan which should I get? I’m using the wave xlr and my voice isn’t deep
MacOS Sonoma not working with certain rode mics affected your use of the podmic usb?
I haven't updated to it yet.
I never do the Mac upgrade right away...lol
If this is purchased. Does it come with access unify?
Yes
@@DarkCornerStudios and with all the unify features for streaming except the stuff only for X mics?
@@Bush_Fam yes
A lot of this mic are defective. A bunch of them die after some time and a lot others (via USB) keep disconnecting. Have you ever had this problem?
This mic is really good, but it has become a nightmare for a lot of people.
Really sad!
@@nerddeconsumo who are you speaking on behalf of?
rode likes you, can you get rode to sell the windscreen as an accesarie. (however you spell that) it would be amazing. the clown nose works well for the podmic, but this one looks amazing!
I am using elgeto wave XLR, would the rodeconnect software work with the podmic usb connection using XLR
I brought 4 for 89 dollars each and they do a good enough job for podcasting
how did you get that pop filter i cant find that anyplace
Comes with the mic
Hey Chief! Do you have an idea why my PodMic USB is much quieter now that I’m using XLR compared to the USB-C? I’ve got a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 3rd Gen, which arrived yesterday and I’m a bit puzzled 😄
Less gain overall on the scarlett.
Those revolution preamps have 70db I believe.
The scarlett has under 60
Thank you for the quick response! You’d recommend a different audio interface? Is there anything better in that price category?
@@vincevega7484 the Lewitt Connect 6 is decent
Thought about the Scarlett 4th gen or maybe the Volt 2? Read some good things about the Volt 2 when I tried to figure it out what the problem is with my current setup 😅
I mean, it shouldn’t be the case that I need to crank it up almost all the way to the max… I think I need something different, just thought the Scarlett is the right step for my first audio interface
