I've been sewing for 50 years, this is the best tip I have seen. Great idea to save my vintage patterns. Thanks!!
That's awesome! So glad you liked it :)
yes great tip with chopping mat Whitney. thanks for sharing!
I know this is older, but this is a FABULOUS tip! I’m thinking about doing that with some of my patterns so they’re sturdier. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful idea. I do buy and use these cutting mats from the Dollar Tree. I never thought of using the mats for templates. Thank you for the very useful tip. Now off to the Dollar Tree for me . ☺💜
Just found your sight, love the info
I am a huge fan of the same cutting mats! I think I am up to about 21 uses for them. Another use for sewing is as a removeable stiffener for fabric baskets, so they can be washed.
Great idea!
Hi Whitney I have been a subscriber of your channel for many year's now. Love all your videos and your great tips and tricks 😉. Keep up the great work 👏 👍 🤗
I used Simplicity 5461 and it made a sweet memory bear -- my first. I love all your tips Whitney! Invaluable!! Thank you.
This is a great way to save patterns Thank you so much ❤
I have a 6'2" son who loves custom vests to wear to work. I had paid quite a bit of $ for clear, thick plastic at an art store because I need to see those through the front vest pieces to make sure print is correct :( even if I need to tape them together, what a savings! Thanks for the idea!
Whitney this is such a great idea ! ! I line my fridge shelves with these little mats so stuff doesn't tip or drip ! ! So helpful, thanks!
I tried using parchment paper to pin to the fabric before cutting but I like your idea with the plastic better. Thanks
All my sewing projects are made with plastic templates. I bought them at
fabric stores but now I'm going to dollar tree to see what they have. I made
two 22" memory bears for Xmas. They were kids one minions boy and a
Princess girl. Kids love holding them and sleeping with them. My templets
I have are for rabbits and frogs. Love the templates had them for years and
they never rip or tear like paper. Lv ur videos🌻
+Margaret-Mary Aww the bears sound adorable!
Yesssss. I too have been using those. I was using place mats but these are bigger and i don't have to fight with the colors and designs of placemats.
Great idea! I have a few patterns that I use a lot - neck pillow, fleece hat, and some new ones that I just need to put on plastic. The bear is so cute and I can think of a few people that I can go ahead and make this for. Can’t wait for the video. Thanks!
As a new sewer, this is a great idea. I was wondering how I can keep the patterns but not ruin them. Thanks for sharing!
The video just started, and the only thing I notice is that sweater thing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!! ❤️❤️
Haha you mean the one I'm wearing?? It's a baja jacket I got when we went to New Mexico this summer
I have a fleece hat pattern that got used a lot this season. This is a great idea. Love your videos.
Just found your memory bear videos....so glad I did, thank you so much! x
When there are notches you make sure they Are turn out insteady of in < and Do it > on your patterns
Thank you so much for great tip, I been sewing from years and love learning new ideas. New subscriber here.
My most used pattern is for boxer shorts. All the younger family members love them so I've made many.
The idea of transferring a pattern onto plastic is a great idea. I will probably be using this for my memory bear pattern. If I can round up enough viable fabric, I will be making about 30 bears out of my grandparents' clothes. My grandma passed away 5 years ago and my grandpa is turning 92 this month. He hasn't let any of us touch my grandma's clothes, and he won't let us until after he passes. I want to make the bears with a mixture of both of their clothes.
This is so smart!! Thanks for the tip, Whitney!
Thanks! Glad you liked the idea! Would this be useful for all the plushies you make?
What a great idea, I use plastic sheet cutting boards for a lot of things aside from the use they are actually made for,, and this idea makes so much sense to me. Like you, I have what seems like an endless pattern stash - so...I haven't used very many over again =) But, I did make bears years ago and loved one of the little miniature bear patterns and made that a few times. Thanks for the tips, you are my go-to for interesting ideas for sure.
Recently bought a pattern and it's for a small and large bear. The small is inside the large. So, this is a great idea that way I can still use both patterns with out losing the large bear.
I do the same with my frequent use patterns. Love your videos❤️❤️
I can't wait for your tips and tricks for the memory bears! I have a pattern that looks similar to this, but i'm just procrastinating.... probably because i have 11 to make with my Grandmother's clothing...
Oh wow, that is a lot to make! I was afraid I wouldn't like making them because it can be a little tedious at times, but I ended up really enjoying it.
I have made fleece socks and hats many times. I'd love a tutorial on making fleece socks better, especially one with a pattern that is more shaped to the foot since a real foot slopes in and isn't really round.
Great idea....Will start transferring my patterns! Thanks for sharing!
This is so brilliant!! Kudos to you!! Thank you for such an easy to follow tutorial!! 👏🏻😊❤️💕
I can't wait to do this with all my patterns!! THANK YOU!!
Glad you like the idea :)
Thank you for your respond we will be waithing for the memory bear video. Keep ur good work god blesd
What a great idea
I love you how to videos for sewing memory bears. Can you please do video on how to sew the vest that comes with the pattern. Thank you
I've never made the vest, so there won't be a tutorial for it.
Such a great idea!! I love these cutting mats for templates. Just the right weight! I have a couple of purse patterns that I love love love and make as gifts often enough that I have them on plastic now. =)
Would you share those purse patterns?
2 of my go to patterns are the Outta Time Tote, and the 2 Zip Hipster. www.dogundermydesk.com/store/patterns/
Excellent idea! Thanks.
Brilliant!! Thanks so much!!! Life saver ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for making this I can’t wait to use on my favorite patterns!
Hi all where in England would I buy this plastic from thank
Such a great idea. Especially if you're working on something where the placement of the fabric pattern is crucial, you can see right through to make sure everything is where it ought to be. Shame they don't make them big enough to use on garment patterns...or do they? I'll have to do a bit of searching.
Yes, Please let us know if you find this larger. I would do the same.
This might work. www.amazon.com/MASTERFRAME-FLEXIBLE-SHEET-PETG-REPLACEMENT-PROJECT-CLEAR-0-03/dp/B077MRHVMT/ref=sr_1_3?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1523561320&sr=1-3&keywords=flexible+clear+plastic+sheet
I found a possibility today 2' x 4' $21 (too much for me, unless I was making the item many times over). They have 4-5 thicknesses, all cheaper, just not sure how rigid they are. www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/plastic_sheets_rolls/thin_gauge_polycarbonate_sheets/541
I'm going to have to check dollar tree for those mats. I use that exact same bear pattern for memory bears and I would love for the pattern to last longer than that flimsy pattern paper. I am also in the process of perfecting my hand made dolls and this would be perfect for creating a final draft for the bodies.
So glad you like the idea! After just a few uses my paper patterns were getting damaged (mostly from placing them on the fabric too quickly after ironing) so I knew it was time to make the plastic templates.
Very good idea. Gonna do the same with mine.
My husbands western shirt pattern I have used for 25 yrs and it's the same paper pattern only it has fusible iinterfacing ironed onto the back side and has lasted forever. Only now it will have to be altered because of weight gain over the last few years.
Hi, Whitney
Just wanted to thank you for all your tutorials.
Do you think you can show us how to make a key fob to attach to a little pouch?
Thanks
It wasn't a traditional key fob, but I show making one and how I attach it to a pouch in this tutorial - ruclips.net/video/h9kJJa2xRTs/видео.html
Thank you very much. I will try it on my next pouch.
I love that idea! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing
Love this idea. Must do this!
Fantastic idea!!! Ty, Whitney!!!
Cool idea! Love the bear.
Fantastic idea. Thank you
Always love your video
This is so cute! Thanks for sharing it with us!
+Goin Batty Glad you liked it :)
This is great can you tell me if you poked holes in the plastic to make the dot markings on the pattern pieces?
@@Zawjatulmo I used a small hole punch to make the holes
Great idea Whitney!!!!
Love this idea
i keep the plastic mats from Wright’s bacon. they are not large but they are similar, though thinner, to the cutting mats. i also use cereal boxes.
I did this but I used the more expensive plastic from hobby lobby. I need to try dt. I use my cloth pad pattern over and over lol
+Rosie Mayberry Ohhhh...thanks for mentioning cloth pads! I need to transfer my pad patterns to plastic. I forgot to do those.
Love this idea I enjoy you videos
You are the BEST.!!!!
What a great idea! Thanks
Thank you, thank you!
Do you have tutorials on using a serger or sewing with neoprene or how to make patterns?
I know I'm finding this 5 years after the fact, but I ran to Dollar Tree yesterday to get some of these and unfortunately, all they have is a milky-white version. You can see through them so I'm going to try tonight but I am not sure how they'll work. Wish me luck!
Awesome Tip Whitney!! Thanks! have you did the drawing for the iron yet??
Just picked the winner...will announce soon
Thanks! Awesome tip!
Great tip, thanks
Great idea
This seems like it would be a good stiffener for the bill on your newsboy cap. And unlike cardboard, it could be washed.
I have considered using this in my hats, but decided against it. I prefer just using interfacing because my hat can be worn, washed, crumbled, etc without having to worry about anything. Plus I like the softer look of it without a stiff bill.
Hi Witney. I am in the UK so we dont have dollar stores. Can you please help me choose the relevant plastic sheets from Amazon???
This is genius I’m doing this 2 my patterns. 💜💜💜
When i start my bear pattern do i need to iron out my pattern first b4 i cut?
Hey I wanted 2 know how u put those holes in the plastic?
Brilliant
I can’t find those chopping mats at either of the dollar tree stores in my area. Really nifty idea, though. I’m trying to come up with something similar.
Hope you're able to find some! Might check stores like walmart, big lots, etc to see if they have anything similar.
Whitney Sews thanks for the tip 🙏 I will definitely keep looking!
I found Dollar Tree online @ www.dollartree.com/search/go?w=chopping%20mats They show 2 chopping mats per pkg. for $1.00. You can order and have it shipped to your home or to the store in your area. If ordering you're are limit to 4 per order. I hope this helps.
Cutting my first template. If I have slight imperfections does it matter? Like when cutting if it’s slightly off will that be made up when sewing?
Try to cut it as best you can, but I it's not 100% perfect it should still be fine. Mine aren't perfect and they still work great.
Thank you! Love your videos and I appreciate the help
Brilliant!!! Mine are plexiglass cut by someone else who did it for free!!!
Very cool!
Thank you sooo much for sending me this link. As I live in the UK I’m going to try find something similar, if not do you think laminated paper would be beneficial?
I don't think it would be as good
I’m in the same boat have you found anything simmilar as I think I may look on amazon or eBay
Update- amazon do somthing that I think may be similar, 6 boards for £18. I’ve asked wether they can be cut with scissors just waiting for a reply x
Oh and found the axact one that Whitney is using but it’s about £30 in the UK ☹️
Extra Thick Flexible Frosted Clear Plastic Cutting Mats, 12" x 18", Set of 6, by... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07NQPYVV2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_LXm4EbPYFWECD
Just in case you want the one that looks to be similar 😉 I think I may buy them. Worst case I can always give them to a high school or primary school 🤷🏼♀️
Will u be able to make a video of the memory BEAR I will appreciated if u will and my nice she is 11 and starting to learn sewing she is ur # 1 FAN
+Luz Olivo Yes, I will have a video about how to sew bears coming later.
You could just laminate your patterns? which would possibly be cheaper if you have an laminator or even just laminate empty pouches and tape them together to use for larger patterns?
I wouldn't risk laminating them in case it gets a wrinkle in the plastic as it goes through the laminater. I really love the method I use because the chopping mats are 3/$, are nice and sturdy, and larger than laminating pouches.
How wide is your washi tape please and thanks?
Hi , I just made my first memory bear using your favourite pattern.it was okay for first bear but I found the back of the bear body was bigger than the front by quite a bit but I just cut it off at the neck. Do you know why possibly the back was bigger. Thankyou 🌺
Mine will seem bigger in the back sometimes too. I just make sure the top edges and the center seam line up the ease the rest in as I go. This means moving the fabric around, slightly stretching one, pressing with my fingers, etc whatever it takes to get both pieces to lay flat and even just before sewing that section. Hard to explain without visuals, but I hope that makes sense. But if all else fails, having the excess at the top and trimming it a bit isn't going to ruin the bear. I've had to do that a few times too.
Whitney Sews Thankyou 🌺
About how many do you have to buy?
How many cutting mats did u need to copy the bear pattern?
I believe I only used one set of chopping mats which was two sheets
I did this using the same plastic mats u show here BUT....how did u get the holes into the plastic needed on some of the pieces for marking. I cannot. I tried a paper hole punch and squeezing it, i was unable to punch a hole through that plastic.
I used a crop a dile. Here's the link to one if you want to check it out. amzn.to/2VOpCAY
What is the thing you use to cut the circles for the 👂🏻 & 👀???
A crop a dile punch. It should be linked in the video description box.
How many mats are in a pack Whitney?
I believe it was 2
Have you done a video on simplicity 8539 rag doll
No, I haven't
@@Whitney_Sews I went to Joe Ann fabric to get some interfacing and was not sure what to get everything they had was to be placed between two pieces of fabric
I do the SAME thing!!! Great minds think alike uh? Haha
Hi l have been given a simplicity patten 8155 and can’t seem to do the foot price can you help many thanks
Awesome idea! By the way where did you get your bear patterns
It's an out of print simplicity pattern. Some walmarts still have them. I will have more info on that in my upcoming bear video
Whitney Sews thank you so much I would appreciate that very much.
Whitney Sews Hi...could you share the pattern number please. So if I come across it I'll know which one it is. Thank you!
W0197 is the number of the Simplicity Bear with Vest I just got from Wal-Mart last week. The picture on the front is identical to the A2115 in this other video from Whitney: ruclips.net/video/LvyZQuWdEwM/видео.html
Where at in the Dollar Tree do you find these? Thank you so much.
Kitchen supplies
Thank you. What do you use to cut the mat?
Scissors that I keep for cutting paper and craft materials.
Whitney, if memory bear won't sit, what did I do wrong
Nothing wrong. This style has to be propped against something to really sit up
Did you post your memory bear tutorial
+Nonna M Not yet.
When you are drawing your pattern in fabric how do transfer the dots for eyes or ears on to fabric?
I used a 1/8 inch hole punch to punch through the plastic. Then just mark a sit on the fabric where each hole is
Thought so but thought I’d check lol
@@Whitney_Sews hi Whitney, are you able to put a link to the 1/8 inch hole punch thing? many thanks
@@Samantha-rv4ss The one I use is called a crop a dile. Here's the link - amzn.to/2VOpCAY - it's a different color than mine, but everything else is the same.
Whitney Sews ahh thanks so much for the link! Your channel has helped me sew tremendously! 🙏 🦋🥰 thanks
How can i find the patern and directions
I have a playlist where I show every step of making a memory bear. ruclips.net/p/PL6bNa81aVS4QfMk_L30ONPC9N-PoK_W3D&si=ikjg4sYcXyrAKLF- The pattern is a commercial pattern, not one I created. This one is pretty hard to find now, but if you search simplicity rare bear pattern you can find it on the simplicity site.
Struggling to get the pattern A2115
You probably have it now, but I got mine on eBay
pdf please
PDF for what?
Wonderful tip! Thank you
