Hi Cindy, You are such a wonderful seamstress. How did you learn to sew? Did you learn from a family member or did you learn in school or are you self taught? I lov to watch you sew the beautiful vintage dresses with such precision and grace. Thank you for making these lovely sewing videos. I love your little pup with the pink bow. I've always wanted a Yorkie, my husband bought me a Frenchie, and I love him dearly, so I can not complain. I think the rickrack and those sweet pearly pink flower buttons are wonderful touches. Such a feminine beautiful pink dress. Looks like the kind of dress that should be worn to a tea party. Love it!!
Thank you so much! My Yorkie is sending your Frenchie so much love! My great-grandmother actually sewed. She used to let my mom pick out patterns and she’d make her clothes and my mom’s Barbie’s clothes too. I would’ve loved to have learned from her but she passed when I was really little. My mom talks about her all the time now since I started teaching myself. Now that I think about it, maybe she’s guiding me as I learn? Idk but it’s a lovely thought ❤️
I have another tip. Find poster tubes and take your patterns and lay them flat on a light weight poster board and roll them like a map. No creases! Prolong the life of your patterns. You do great work. And the more I watch, the better you get. Thank you. Have fun!!
Yay! Welcome to the McCall’s 8401 sew-a-long. I’d love to know how yours turns out? Trying this pattern got a bit chaotic for me, haha. I’m so happy we get to figure this out together! Enjoy and have a lovely weekend! Xoxo, Cindy Leaux
This is absolutely gorgeous and so inspiring! Knowing that it’s a “Mommy and Me” pattern reminded me of all the wonderful things my great-grandmothers, great-aunts, grandmothers, and mother made for me over the years 🩷
Another absolutely gorgeous make! You’re proof positive that it is possible to make these projects look just like the pattern envelope. Can’t wait to see more!
So pretty! Just a tip-since you asked how we keep the rickrack down…anything you want in place, you can baste either with loooong machine stitches or long-ish hand basting stitches you later take out. Love the video! 🌸
I love these videos so much. It’s clear how much work you put into them, and with how high the video quality is I’m surprised the ASMR community hasn’t given you thousands of views yet. My favorite part of the video is the steam iron when the steam fogs up the screen. Please don’t stop making these ❤️❤️❤️
Congrats on the viral. That is fantastic. Well done. Yay for the doodle winning. Sometimes you just have to. And agreed that Robin Williams is a huge loss. The dress is lovely. The alterations came out great - well done, you. As far as I can see from the vintage patterns I've worked with so far - you do all the seams and then you do the bias tape to enclose the edges. But it may be one of those things where it's up to you for the 'order of operations'. Clips or hand-basting are my only guesses for holding the rick-rack into place. Presently I'm working on hand sewing a cobalt blue wool crepe into a 1950's kimono sleeve blouse for the summer. I'm experimenting with using the fashion fabric as an interlining on the cuffs & collar; then pad-stitched into place. So far, the results are making me happy. I'm attempting to use every couture/Victorian and tailoring technique I can find... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Oh I bet your kimono is absolutely beautiful! I love seeing the insides of couture. They’re like masterpieces and the pad stitching is so pretty to me. The next video I make, I will be cutting into “the good fabric” so your thoughts & advice are a treasure! Thank you for sharing ❤️
@@CindyLeaux Oooh, cutting into the good fabric. Do it! Absolutely. It's always so worth it. Yes there are nerves at the start, but by the time one is done with the scissors I'm smiling (and usually need a post-stress nap, lol). The good fabric is where you learn things. And the results are always worth the case of the nerves... Pad stitching feels like my new superpower. I love Victorian/couture techniques.
I needed to watch this following Lucy from Sew Essential the emphasis was on comfy almost casual for the party season. Thank you for showing us how it can be. Birdy
Your videos are so peaceful and wonderful to watch while you create masterpieces! Watching from Kentucky. One of my favorite parts on your videos are your “happy claps”. Makes me smile every single time! It would be wonderful to see you or someone wearing the finished dress.
Thank you for this tutorial. I needed something picturing on how to do a collar, and your tutorial was really helpful. In addition, I also bought the same pattern, so might be nice to sew along in the future.
Not enough words to thank you, Cindy Leaux! I'm a few months into my sewing journey and picked up this pattern in a flash of ambition - needless to say, I was lost by the time I got to the midriff. I'd shortened my bodice by two inches (v. short torso club) and was panicked about everything fitting together and new techniques yet to come (ric rac? piping??) and put this on hold for a week before having the presence of mind to RUclips search. Liked and subscribed and can't wait to join you again.
Yay! Welcome aboard. I’m so happy that this helped. Thank you so much joining in and I hope it all goes better than you can even imagine. Happy sewing!! 🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️
Congrats on going viral on Tik Tok! I don’t go there anymore, so I’m so I missed it. I’m watching from Central Texas, and have been enjoying every dress you’ve made! You say you’re a beginner, but I’m just gonna have to take your word for it, because every garment you’ve done has come out perfectly. My favorite is your red New Year’s dress!
Ooh Central Texas? Do you guys have Buccee’s there? I enjoy traveling and that is the one place I discovered that I wish every state had for roadtrips. And thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot.🥹❤️

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the Actual vintage patterns has more detail and instructions than the "vintage 50s McCall's patterns". oh this turned out so gorgeous!! i get super frustrated when sewing because i'm so excited for the end product that i sometimes skip steps and feel like i'm running out of time. i didn't make this one along with you, but i think i will try a sew along in the future! having someone to go along with slowly and do all of the steps really calms me down, i feel less like i'm taking too long and more like i'm doing it right the first time. this was super soothing and relaxing just to watch, and the dress turned out picture perfect!

This was far too cute, and I wish I had your bravery! I'm too scared to sew older pieces because I'm definitely not a seamstress... Anyway! I use Elmer's glue to tack down rickrack (among other things). You only need a small dot of glue in precise places, and I set it with my iron. Some people use glue sticks! I don't know if you have one yet, but using a rotary cutter and large quilting ruler makes any strip cutting as swift as a sad kiss! I wish I'd used a cuter aphorism. Hey, you did so wonderful on this dress! I just recently picked up this pattern since it was recommended as a beginner friendly pattern! I know im going to have to take im some but theres a description of the body measurements that stumped me greatly! Oys the Hip-9" below waist measurement? Is there a way to explain what the measurement is asking for so i dont mess up with this dress? Any help from anyone who knows what im talking about is much appreciated! ❤
yes! the way i learned is to tie a ribbon around the smallest part of your waist then take your measuring tape and measure from your waist 9 in down and take the circumference of your hip at the 9in mark. the hip measurement is actually irrelevant in this pattern bc it’s a full / free skirt but if you ever do a wiggle skirt that will help. if you’re concerned about fit, i would def make a mockup first. but also check out the “minerva” channel. there’s a playlist on skirt pattern drafting. she goes over how to take hip & waist measurements in the very first skirt drafting video. 💕

Google is translating your word to “molds” which I’m guessing means the tissue paper pattern? I use a low heat. And the weights are brass weights from Amazon. Does this help? 🥰
You're dresses always come out so well in the end💖💖!! But i have a question, do you wear a petticoat with them? I have some 50s patterns but I'm not sure if they'll poof on their own or if I need a petticoat??? Thanks!

@@CindyLeaux Thank you for your reply! I was surprised that you replied so late, but it's not midnight in North America! Lol (It's midnight in Japan now) Modern Japanese patterns have lines of multiple sizes and designs drawn on large pieces of paper, so it's hard to find the design you want and copy it onto thin paper! The product in this video only comes with one size, so can you reuse it even if you cut it out? I'm also curious about modern patterns! I hope I was able to translate this sentence well too🥰
@@CindyLeaux You're welcome. When I mentioned bobbin threads I meant the gathering threads. Another tip if you have gather a small section use your machine's feed dogs instead. En qué grado de calor planchas los moldes? Que usas de pesas pequeñas?
Google is translating your word to “molds” which I’m guessing means the tissue paper pattern? I use a low heat. And the weights are brass weights from Amazon. Does this help? 🥰
You're dresses always come out so well in the end💖💖!! But i have a question, do you wear a petticoat with them? I have some 50s patterns but I'm not sure if they'll poof on their own or if I need a petticoat??? Thanks!
Thank you! Yes, petticoats give it the fullness you’re looking for. The petticoat here has three layers to it 🙏❤️
@@CindyLeaux Thank you soooo much for such a quick response!!!🙌💖🙌 I've been looking for a proper answer for this question for a while😭😭. Now maybe I can start on those patterns! THANK YOU!!
Of course, anytime! I hope you have so much fun sewing & good luck!! 🩵✨✨
Nice, I wanted to try that one, too! :-)

I’m a few months late to the party but I’m from Southern California and we just had an earthquake about an hr ago…and about 20 aftershocks…
Wow sorry to hear ~ stay safe out there!
Невероятная красота!
thank you!

When you pull threads out of your sewing projects, pull the bobbin threads. It's easier 😊.
Thank you for the tip! 🙏❤️
@@CindyLeaux You're welcome. When I mentioned bobbin threads I meant the gathering threads. Another tip if you have gather a small section use your machine's feed dogs instead. It takes some getting used to, yet it's worth it. If you need more sewing tips I can recommend Sewing with Nancy videos. She has a RUclips channel. Unfortunately no one could talk to her anymore. For she had passed away from cancer 🔙 in 2017. I used to watch her TV 📺 show when I was your age. If someone were to talk to you, then chances are this person is also a next gen like yourself. I am glad you are putting out videos. Again thank you. To the next generation 😊. See you in your next video 📹 😊.
Hi! I enjoy your videos! I just wish you would speak!
so happy you’re enjoying! maybe someday 🥰❤️
I can't understand the written directions at all.
It may help to study vintage sewing books, you’ll get there!
It is a little hard ti watch yiur video when we meed to focus on what you are typing at the button, autio would work so much better so i can focus on yiur sewing! I love your video, but i have to keep stopping it to read the subtitles
Noted ✍️ 📝 Thank you! 🥰❤️
I am not a fan of your videos.
I am an Air Conditioner!!!!!!
