I forgot to mention in the video that the interfacing I use is the Pellon P44f lightweight fusible interfacing. There is a link to it in the description box. I buy mine an entire bolt at a time because I use it for memory bears, t-shirt quilts, and a whole lot more!
What a superb instructions video. Thank you. I've recently started sewing a bear. I purchased the kit for £3. The picture instructions are great but this video is a major bonus. Thank you Whitney. I always learn a lot from watching and listening to you

Thank you sew much 😊 I have been searching and searching for someone to teach me to make these for my grandkid, I’m super excited now and in awe of you! Your family is so very lucky 🍀
Great tips! Experience teaches us so much! A thought I had while you were showing your index card ... you could create one with the piece descriptions and laminate it. Use a dry erase marker to indicate fabric assignments. Erase when finished.
That's a great idea! I work on 6+ bears at a time now so I right them in a composition book with two bears on the front of a page and two on the back. Thinking about typing it up and printing several copies to use in the future.
Doctors now advise against using crib bumpers so moms have donated several on social media. I plan to make and donate baby quilts but with warmer weather approaching I plan to make some memory bears, also. I will use your tips so thank you, Whitney!! 💜
Great videos. I plan on placing a small amethyst heart inside the chest when I stuff it. Thought of placing it in a small satchel and sew that along the seam so it doesn’t move around the body.
I have made 6 of these bears with pattern A2115 and yes the hardest part is sewing the head on. I wish I could figure out how to put the head on to body a different way maybe the back of head to back of body and front of head to front body.Any Ideas...
I lost my mom 3 weeks ago and I want to make memory bears for myself and my kids and maybe my 7 siblings. I don't think I have enough of her clothes for making large bears. If I were to make 10" or 12" bears, will they be harder to make because they're small? Also, what size eyes and nose should I order for them? I only make bags, so this is all new to me. Thanks so much for your videos. ❤
@ My plan is to use the few additional shirt logos/graphics & remnants from original projects in the vest and a bow. Provide options to wear/showcase different times/memories. Made a bear with work shirts and remnants from the original sewn gifts (placemats, mug rug, drawstring bags, etc.) The bear came out amazing! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
I haven't tried using a sweater before. You will definitely want to make a practice bear first with a similar sweater to test out some different weights of fusible interfacing before starting your actual bear. Let me know how it turns out!
your video was so instructive and easy to follow. Is there a way to add a button placket from a button down shirt at the middle seam? I am a beginner in sewing and I can not figure out how to get it to work.
I love your bear. It’s exactly what I want to do. I love stuff bears and animal but afraid to make a disaster I got everything but I’m confuse about stabilizer could help with how to cut and sew on the stabilizer with the cut pattern pieces.
I only ever sewed 2 or 3 bears at a time so I didn't mix up the pieces. I would sew the sets at once (ex - sew all the legs, all the arms, the two heads, etc). Other than that I don't have many tips to help with batching.
Great tips....especially not using your cherished materials on your 1st bear and the use of interfacing. Also, like the tracing onto the interfacing. Funny about all the pinning giving you anxiety...it does me too! I love him looking off to the side!!!! That is a happy "mistake". :D
Not sure about this ... but if I fold the fabric in half inside out....why would I need to reverse pattern pieces like the arms, legs. If I cut double like that, the pieces work out ok.
You can definitely do it that way. The reason I reverse my pieces is because I only cut one layer at a time. I interface, trace and cut the pieces one at a time to get the most accurate cuts and placement on the material (because I use clothing for memory bear orders).
I've been asked to sew a memory bear to match the weight and length of the baby at birth. Do you have any hints in changing the size of a pattern? She was a premie. And they would like a memory bear made out of some of her onsies. These are usually like cotton and stretchy. Do you have any advice for the fabric? Thanks!
As for altering the pattern you might be best looking for a pattern that is already close to the right length. The pattern I use says it's 18 inch total. I'm actually making a video next week full of tips and info for using clothing for bears. I'll post it on Wednesday. I think it will be helpful for you.
Thank you for that tutorial. It’s very well done, I love it. Wanted to know from anyone, can you wash it stuffed up as it is, or should you take the stuffing out and re-sew it each time. Just wondering what your experiences have been with regard to washing them. Thanks again for a great tutorial. Will be trying my hand at this soon. :)
Spot clean or hand wash if it gets really bad (leaving it stuffed) squeeze out most of the water without being too tough on it. Put in dryer on low heat long enough to get out excess water then hang to finish drying. You want it to fully dry in under 24 hours (preferably less) or it might start smelling funky. Hope that helps. I would not take the stuffing out unless absolutely necessary. The more times you open and resew the seams the weaker the fabric gets
I think I may have picked the wrong type of interfacing. I am having an issue with the material not wanting to see right. The interfacing is sticking to the presser foot. I am using heat n bond ultrahold iron on adhesive. Unfortunately I have done this on an Irreplaceable shirt and have no more material to cut more patterns out. Do you know a way that I can fix this issue so I can possibly still use the pieces I have already cut and have the heat n bond on?
Hi just wanted to ask a question could you please tell me the name of the item you used for your bear’s eyes and nose from hobby lobby please and thanks?
@@Whitney_Sews yes. i tried that and it worked a little. thanks. also, on A2115 when cutting the pattern, do i need to flip the pattern piece over for both front and back or just cut 2 or 4 of the same side. does that make sense?
Whitney, you totally rock woman! Might actually be using this, since I have a grandson now! Woohoo! Have a great week. Great explanations on this video.
I would like to make memory/keepsake bears for profit. How do you make sure that you get clean clothing with no bed bugs? One of our grandsons currently has a bed bug infestation in the apartment building and it freaks me out to think that someone would hand me a bag of clothes and then I have creepy crawlers come into my home.
I was pretty intentional about the orders I took since I only made 6-10 bears a month. They were all from people I knew or friends of friends. If someone knows they had bed bugs and knowingly gives you textiles from their home that is terrible. But I know mistakes happen so you would want to have a system in place for piece of mine. Research how to kill bed bugs. Maybe you can have a little freezer and immediately put the clothes in there for a few days. I know that works with rice, flour, etc that might have bug eggs in it. Also be up front about bed bugs with people and let them know if there is a chance they have them in their home that you won't be making bears for them at this time. Hope that helps.
To make a bear using only a onesie you will only be able to make a very small bear. The bears I make are 18 inches tall. I do however have a video where the bear's body is made of a single onesie and only the face and hands are additional fabric (a recieving blanket). ruclips.net/video/O5FrT_sB5C8/видео.html
I think comments were closed on the pattern video. I was wondering if you have a recommendation on a smaller bear pattern? I would love to make about ten of these, but don't have as many baby clothes as I'd need from my son who passed away. I could use receiving blankets and blankets, but I still feel like a 9 or 12 would be better for what I'm picturing!
The comments are open on every video of mine...must of been a youTube issue. All the good patterns I know of make larger bears. You will probably need to google and see if there are some patterns online that would work. You can try a few with regular fabrics first. Then if you like them plan, plan, plan what will be cut from each piece and cut the most important pieces first (ex - face and body front) and if you start running out of fabric the legs, back, and arms can be the receiving blankets. I've made one of the 18 inch bears from a newborn outfit and receiving blankets. It was pretty stressful because I knew if I made one mistake there wouldn't be enough fabric. I needed to piece together the front body pieces to get them large enough. Here's pics if you want to see it - facebook.com/pg/WhitneySewsMemories/photos/?tab=album&album_id=831505387056736
Whitney Sews thanks! I actually went to Walmart and found the pattern for the 18 inch one! It was the last of hundreds I looked through 🤪 I'm excited to try it out! These videos are great 😉❤️
Whitney, I am making 3 memory bears from 3 men's shirts and would like to incorporate the collars, cuffs, buttons, and collars. Do you have suggestions as to the best way to do that?
I'm in a group on Facebook with a lady who makes a lot of bears like that. You could check it out for inspiration - m.facebook.com/groups/130101381135491
They aren't sold in single quantities. There are links in the video description box for the ones I use. I recommend making at least one practice bear first. On occasion I would mess up and get the eyes crooked and have to remake the face which uses an new set, so having a few extra is not bad.
Thank you for this video! Question: What is the cost involved in making this : including the pattern, poly, interfacing, buttons, etc.? I have a friend who is looking for someone to make these from her recently departed baby. I love all the tips and hints you provided. I might try my hand at it if it is feasible (I am a quilter, no experience with this kind of sewing).
It's hard to figure the cost for one bear because the supplies come in larger quantities. The eyes and noses (links for the ones I use are in the video description) are $1.99 for each bag, but have enough to make several bears. The stuffing is cheaper the more you buy at once. I buy 10 lb boxes at Joanns when they are 50% off which is enough for 10 bears. Pellon P44f lightweight fusible is about $1 per yard regular price, but goes on sale for up to 60% off at Joanns (you will need 2-3 yards per bear). The pattern is $1.99 at Wal-Mart if you can find it (look in the bottom drawer). If you can't then get the rare bear pattern online from simplicity for about $6, it's the newer version. You will want to make a practice bear first so you would be making at least 2 bears. I hope that helps, it's a bit of an investment to get started, but if you hit sales it's not too bad.
Hi Whitney! I have a sweater that belonged to my mother before she passed away and I'd love to incorporate it into a memory bear. I'm thinking I would definitely use interfacing to stabilize it. Also I would practice by making a bear using another sweater first -- maybe something thrifted. Have you made any bears using sweater knit? Do you have any tips? Thank you for sharing your Memory Bear series! Love it!!! ❤️
Regular cotton fabric is easiest to use, but I have used everything from tshirts to jeans to make bears. If you follow my step by step tutorial including interfacing all the pieces most fabrics will work. Hope that helps.
Hey Whitney, I just started following you, amazing. I love your tutorials. I tried my first memory bear with using the same pattern A2115 but I'm having a problem with the head. My bears face looks so much smaller and not like a bear at all...looks like a rat. Do you ever increase the size of the pattern pieces? And how much do you charge for making the bear? I'm not on facebook so I couldn't see what the price would be...thanks
I don't make any adjustments to the head size. Did you use a larger seam allowance on the head by chance? I charge $50 per bear plus shipping, but I'm booked up for the next few months.
@@Whitney_Sews - I did this on the first one I made (before I found you!!). Whilst reading the pattern it says all seam allowances are 5/8" unless otherwise stated. In tiny font on the actual pattern of the bear, it mentions that all seam allowances for the bear are 1/4". When you make the bigger seam allowance your head looks smaller. I just wanted also to say thank you for the tutorials. I'm in the middle of my fourth bear and love it :)
Oh ok, you might check out the Rare Bear pattern then. It's a pretty similar pattern that can be ordered online from Simplicity. Here's the link - www.simplicity.com/simplicity-storefront-catalog/patterns/brands/simplicity/simplicity-pattern-c5461-rare-bear-sewing-pattern/
Interfaced both fabrics, put washi tape on my pattern where I wanted the straps to be, cute 1 inch wide stripes of denim and pieced between the plaid. Then sewed that on top of a denim piece. Used the washi tape on my pattern to like things up and traced the pattern. Finished bear as normal.
Sorry, but I've had a ton of people ask me to send them patterns and I just can't send one to everybody. I have seen some on eBay lately that weren't too bad of a price if you factor in how much shipping, eBay fees, and PayPal fees are for the seller. Or you can look into getting a copy of the Simplicity rare bear pattern. It's the newer version of the pattern available only online and part of the proceeds go to fund rare disease research. I'll get the link and post below if you want to check it out.
Here's the Simplicity link. I believe it's about $11-12 for the pattern and shipping. www.simplicity.com/simplicity-storefront-catalog/patterns/brands/simplicity/simplicity-pattern-c5461-rare-bear-sewing-pattern/
Hi Whitney. I was able to get the pattern on eBay. I was so happy. I showed my sister and she loved it. She said I want one and I said what your 69 and she laughed and said so I want one. Guess I will make my baby sis one. She wants the vest also. Have you made the vest yet. Lv your videos.

I want to sew / embroider a baby's weight, length ,dob onto both paws. What size font do you recommend
I have no idea, I don't embroider. Try cutting a test foot, marking the seam allowance, and test on it.
I think I may have picked the wrong type of interfacing. I am having an issue with the material not wanting to see right. The interfacing is sticking to the presser foot. I've never worked with heat and bond so I'm not really sure what could be done. Is it a double sided interfacing, is that why it's sticking to things?
Hello thanks for this tutorial. Which interface would you recommend?
The one I use is linked in the video description box.
I just purchased the McCall's L9546. It doesn't look at all your bear. The arms aren't connect to the body at the neck. Do I have the correct pattern?

*me with internalized struggling and terrible sewing skills and a final due*
This is fineeeeeee
What interfacing does everyone use?
The one I use is linked in the video description box.
Great tips. Accidents do tend to come out better than we plan. #personality

Whitney Sews thank you x

These are so cute.
Thank you :)
do you have a smaller pattern ?
Not in this same style
@@Whitney_Sews I need something like a beanie baby size.
Maybe not that small.
There are tons of stuffed animal patterns from various designers (big name and independent). Just search online until you find something you like.
My walmart has in Its sew simple McCall's L9547
Yep, Simplicity and McCalls are owned by the same company so they did a new release with the other brand along with a price raise.
Anyone do the VEST yet ??? IM in needing of help to figure it out. PLEASE..TIA. XO
How much it cost your teddy bear?
I charge $50 per bear plus shipping. Add ons are extra
where is the best place to gets patterns from? x
Simplicity 2115 is sold at Walmart in the bottom drawer of the pattern cabinet. If you can't find it there look online :)
I love is the uk so don’t have that shop haha but thank you.
Oh ok, you might check out the Rare Bear pattern then. It's a pretty similar pattern that can be ordered online from Simplicity. Here's the link - www.simplicity.com/simplicity-storefront-catalog/patterns/brands/simplicity/simplicity-pattern-c5461-rare-bear-sewing-pattern/
Awh brilliant thank you so much x
cute blue bear
Thank you. So adorable..
How do you do the overalls?
Interfaced both fabrics, put washi tape on my pattern where I wanted the straps to be, cute 1 inch wide stripes of denim and pieced between the plaid. Then sewed that on top of a denim piece. Used the washi tape on my pattern to like things up and traced the pattern. Finished bear as normal.
Where do i get the pattern at
Wal-Mart in the bottom pattern drawer. Or look up Simplicity rare bear pattern online for the new version
I can’t seem to find the pattern you use other then super expensive on amazon or eBay could I possibly pay you to send me a copy??
Sorry, but I've had a ton of people ask me to send them patterns and I just can't send one to everybody. I have seen some on eBay lately that weren't too bad of a price if you factor in how much shipping, eBay fees, and PayPal fees are for the seller. Or you can look into getting a copy of the Simplicity rare bear pattern. It's the newer version of the pattern available only online and part of the proceeds go to fund rare disease research. I'll get the link and post below if you want to check it out.
Here's the Simplicity link. I believe it's about $11-12 for the pattern and shipping.

Oh awesome!! Thanks for the help!! Yeah I found the one you used on eBay but it was going to be like $40-$50
@@MissSim203 Thats odd, I found my pattern on Walmart for the original price; atleast 2 or 3 were left
Really nice video! Saw your comment in the chat on the VideoCreators live stream and thought I’d check you out :)
Aww, thanks for coming over and checking my channel out!
Where in Hobby Lobby did you find the eyes and nose? Thanks
In the very back with the doll making supplies.
Thank you very much
Hi Whitney. I was able to get the pattern on eBay. I was so happy. I
showed my sister and she loved it. She said I want one and I said
what your 69 and she laughed and said so I want one. Guess I will
make my baby sis one. She wants the vest also. Have you made
the vest yet. Lv your videos.
Hehe never too old for a lovely bear! I have not made the vest, it's not really my style.
