  • This is my review of Aerosoft's new A330 Professional for P3D v4.5. I've tried to keep things concise, but there is quite a lot to cover.
    Here's the edition of FAST magazing covering the development of the A330 I mentioned:
    www.airbus.com...
    System specs are:
    CPU: i9 9900k @ 5.2GHz
    Mobo: Maximus XI Apex
    RAM: 32GB @ 3866MHz
    GPU: MSI GTX1080 Gaming X @ 2150MHz

      Very kind of you to say, thanks for watching. Raw data instrument flying is my favourite bit of the job. Fortunately my operator is quite happy for us to do so on the line, but at a lot of carriers these days the use of both auto-thrust and flight directors are mandatory.

    • @thesprucemoose9328
      @thesprucemoose9328  4 года назад +2

      Hi Magix, that’s correct. I fly for one of the larger European low cost carriers. Our operations manual permits us to fly manually (without the use of auto-thrust or FDs) for “the purposes of maintaining proficiency” when “appropriate”. There are certain conditions which are specified as inappropriate including “marginal weather” and “IMC in and around mountainous terrain”. So I wouldn’t for example do so in weather nearing the minima for a given approach nor strong winds and turbulence. I do however regularly fly this way down to ceilings of around 700-800 feet.
      It does help that my base is quite small, so I’ve built a good rapports with most of my colleagues. As a result they’re more comfortable with me flying this way, but I’m less likely to do so if I get called out of base for the day. It is of course essential that when we electively increase workload, situational awareness and capacity isn’t impaired.

    Engine stabilisation prior to setting take off power is not required on the A330 however Airbus retain the procedure to keep it in line with the A320 family for dual type rated operators. The rotation was terribly slow (3-5 seconds prior to the nose even coming up) and hence the speed being 30kts+ above F speed as the gear comes up. Not great to be fair from AS.

    • @thesprucemoose9328
      @thesprucemoose9328  4 года назад +4

      I'd say the delayed rotation/insufficient rotation rate was probably my fault. Between being a little distracted by trying to narrate and the totally linear force curve on my joystick, I probably just applied insufficient backpressure. In my opinion, the only major deficiency with the flight dynamics during take-off is the overly abrupt transition to flight mode. Something I feel was really quite nicely modelled, but forgot to mention is how the windward wing starts to lift with the crosswind, which felt very authentic to me.
      Regarding engine stabilisation, do you have a source for that? It's just I'm not aware of any civil jet whose procedures don't require it and neither the FCOM (Air Algerie) nor FCTM (Cathay Pacific) I've been looking at mention it. Particularly in an Airbus, it strikes me as very important as the overwhelming majority of level 2 ECAM cautions are inhibited from FWC flight phase 3 (when the first thrust lever is set to TO thrust) and many of these would favour a low speed abort. Last year I did exactly this for an "Engine compressor vane fault" which presented itself during engine stabilistion. This was much more convenient to deal with at home base than it would have been down route as even though it wouldn't have been a safety threat, it's a no dispatch item in the MEL. I've also discovered fan blade ice during stabilistion upon more than one occasion, despite weather conditions outside of those which require the fan blade ice shedding procedures. Whilst this is easily dealt with by simply extending the stabilisation period, it could well end in an RTO if we'd gone straight to take-off thrust. Whilst I can see MEASTO may mitigate against the threat of thurst assymetry somewhat, I'd also doubt that it's this effective.

      I’m sure with practice you’ll have no trouble matching and indeed exceeding the accuracy of my flying here. I can thoroughly recommend this book (www.flightstore.co.uk/a-guide-to-the-easa-ir-flight-test-p4055) if you’d like to learn more about IFR techniques. ASA also do something similar if you’re more interested in an FAA approved manual, though I can’t vouch for the quality of it as I don’t own a copy.
      Another recommendation I’d have if you’d like to practice basic IFR techniques in the sim is to pick up something with a G1000 cockpit. The reason being that the offside navaid can be displayed on a CDI on either side of the cockpit. The large artificial horizon also encourages a scan centred around it, rather than your performance instruments.

    • @thesprucemoose9328
      @thesprucemoose9328  4 года назад +4

      Thanks, very kind.
      I do have the FSLabs and it’s certainly impressive, but it ought to be for what it costs. The additional attention to detail is noticeable whilst flying the aircraft without failures. For example the transitions between the modes of normal law feel very accurate and GS mini is implemented correctly, which as I pointed out was not the case here. However, if you prefer to fly without failures, I’d save the money and buy Aerosoft as it’s still very good.
      Where the FSLabs product actually manages to differentiate itself is during complex failures. I’ve found it quite handy on multiple occasions when preparing for my LPC/OPC or LOE (simulator evaluations) as a means of confirming my interpretation of a system’s description. During a dual hydraulics failure for example, it’s immediately apparent that all control surfaces are actuated by the correct hydraulic system, and controlled by the correct ELAC or SEC (or indeed the redundant system). Similarly during electrical failures, not only are primary and redundant power sources for systems faithfully represented but where applicable even time limitations on redundant supply can be observed.
      So if you want to dive into PRO-ABN, the FCTM and QRH then it’s great. Otherwise I’d say it not worth anything like what it costs.

    • @FromtheWindowSeat

      TheSpruceMoose Thank you for your very thorough response! Insightful. I have the FSLabs A320 family aircraft and I love them even though I don’t normally simulate failures. For me it’s all about the immersion that they bring, particularly through the ATSU and other effects like icing and passenger announcements. I own the Aerosoft A320 but uninstalled it because I just find it unsatisfying in comparison to the FSLabs. 👍

    • @thesprucemoose9328
      @thesprucemoose9328  4 года назад +2

      Those are both very fair points you raise. I have the original A320, rather than the A319 or A321 and haven't tried either of those features. I can certainly see how they'd raise immersion though, particularly de-icing. And since you have both, I totally understand why you'd only fly the FSLabs aircraft. I was answering on the assumption you were perhaps looking to buy one over the other.
      Happy new year!

      I'd definitely recommend it as I think it's a product which does everything (and more besides), for which most of the community uses their sims. It's also frame-rate friendly and beautifully modelled and textured. With that said, the systems fidelity of the FSLabs product is far higher, but then Aerosoft charges only half the price.
      I gave the following comparison to another commenter regarding my thoughts on the two products:
      "I do have the FSLabs and it’s certainly impressive, but it ought to be for what it costs. The additional attention to detail is noticeable whilst flying the aircraft without failures. For example the transitions between the modes of normal law feel very accurate and GS mini is implemented correctly, which as I pointed out was not the case here. • @thesprucemoose9328
      @thesprucemoose9328  4 года назад +3

      Hi Dray
      On the whole, I'd say it's a reasonable representation of the real aircraft. Though it is something of a moving target for now, as Aerosoft have tweaked it a couple of times since release. Initially the static stability was far too high, meaning the control input required to induce a response was excessive. In the real aircraft only tiny inputs are needed, at least in calm weather. With the most recent patch that has mostly been remedied however.
      My only significant gripe with it now is what I mentioned on the final approach; that it appears to be stable with respect to attitude rather than trajectory. When you extend flaps in the real aircraft for example, it's very apparant that the flight control law compensates by pitching down to maintain flight path angle. In the Aerosoft representation however, it baloons and maintains the increased flight path angle.

    Before anyone gets their panties in a bind let me start by saying I am not knocking anyone who loves airliners. Everyone is different. I understand that a LOT of people get off on the airliners, but I just can’t wrap my head around the appeal. Push a lot of buttons, turn more knobs, take off, and wait for hours flying in a straight line too high to see anything, then finally land. Hours of boredom. What on earth is so fun about knobs and buttons. To be clear, I chose the helicopter route getting my commercial ratings in real life for these very reasons. Your flights are usually shorter, lower, more local, and more interesting and varied jobs to do. I moved to Helicopters after my initial private in airplanes specifically for this reason. The long, boring, dull, straight line uneventful flying of airliners just was not the path I wanted to take, and I still really cannot understand the appeal. Especially with desktop simming... for me Helicopters and back country bush flying will always be where it’s at.

      @thesprucemoose9328  4 года назад +4

      Largely I’d agree with you Tom. Flying from ILS to ILS by the guidance of a flight director isn’t I imagine what John Gillespie Magee had in mind when he spoke of “slipping the surly bonds of earth...”
      Nevertheless, I’m fortunate enough to work for an airline whose operations manual permits us to do away with the auto thrust and FDs should we want to and as a result I look forward to going to work every day. In my most recent working week, I flew visual approaches on four out of five days. Among them were 04R into Venice and 22 into Geneva. And I can think of no other experiences which could better exemplify the majesty of the Dolomites, Alps, Juras and Lac Léman than a visual approach in a jet. The performance of the aircraft, both in terms of the descent from a high altitude and the reasonably fast approach speed lends a perspective to such magnificent vistas unavailable from any other vantage point.
      With that said, I’m green with envy towards those flying for Part 135 operators in the US. I imagine such jobs provide a freedom that disappeared from the airlines with the advent of flight data monitoring. Such roles are also far less common in Europe and would mostly represent a pay cut I couldn’t really afford.
      The sheer complexity of CS25 jets is also something I love about the job. There’s something quite pleasing about trying to plumb the depths of the seemingly bottomless rabbit hole of what there is to learn about them.
