This on the tuba tells a completely different story. From a small animal to a massive dangerous beast trying to make it through the harsh cold winter. Great job :)
I am reminded of Victor Buono's (1938-1982) remark about hearing selections from _Madame Butterfly_ sung in German ... "out loud...." "She sang them well, but hearing _Butterfly_ sung well in German is not unlike seeing _Swan Lake_ danced well by the San Diego Chargers..."
Øystein makes every Tubist proud to be a Tubist. And to believe that I actually met him at a Janisarry Cup at Averøya, Norway. He performed Fnugg in front of me and my bandmates. And he's a really nice guy too.
Vilmos Horváth to be fair it didn't fit at all this piece, there is no way to deny that. As much as he is a wonderful player, the timber of the instrument at this speed and register is way to muddy and heavy
I actually personally much prefer listening to this piece on tuba over violin. Much more singing and fluid, and the ability of the tuba to lend a lilting quality to the fast passages gives the piece a more mysterious, wintry feel. I had never much liked the piece until I heard Baadsvik play it, probably because the violin is just too strident and edgy a tone to really convey the concept of the rich, deeply silent, eerie peacefulness of winter.
The first time I heard OB my instinct was to walk into the parking lot, place my tuba behind my vehicle, and BACK UP! There were not going to be enough hours remaining in my lifetime to product as sweet a sound as Oystein.
TryHardAgains everyone is saying that playing this type of music on a BBb is hard but I’m playing czardas on my school tuba which is a BBb. Does playing it on other keys like f,c, and Eb make it easier?
He makes double pedal b flat clean and at higher octaves his sound is comparable to that of a French horn or euphonium . His range is amazing yet that is not good enough for the Japanese. They expect him to match a trumpets triple c. Jk this guy is the best Tubist in the world. He makes me want to go out there and purchase my long lost love that I use to play some decades ago in highschool and college band.
After being bored by so many cookie-cutter performances of this Vivaldi concerto, I have at last heard one that captured my interest, impressed and entertained me. Bravo Mr Baadsvik!
Heh. I played tuba through high school and college and toward the end of my college days, there was a contest at some event that involved no-hands digging for jelly beans in a dish full of whipped cream. I finished 3-4 times faster than 2nd place, and the people who set it all up decided that had to be a fluke and reset it and I dominated just as thoroughly the 2nd time. Not sure if had anything to do with the tuba experience but your comment did remind me of it... :D
I couldn't play that piece that well on my euphonium! Great job Mr. Baadsvik! keep posting more videos! I really enjoy your performances! Thank you for sharing them here on RUclips! Dan
What would Vivaldi do? Probably would have gotten around to this arrangement himself if the tuba had existed in his time, and Baadsvik, the Paganini of the pedal tone, had been around.
That should not be possible. It should fry the circuits of the recording devices and lock up the anything used to reproduce the sounds, let alone the video. The tuba itself should annihilate like antimatter. This raises quantum paradoxes that Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein, and Wolfgang Pauli working as a team couldn't parse, with Weinberg hollering encouragement.
The tuba may not be the best sounding instrument by itself but his playing is incredible! Also he has fingering skills that would make a guitarist jealous.
Hes mostly changing notes with his mouth and tonging it. To any brass players, please mistake me if Im wrong as I don't play brass but just know from a friend who does.
Listen to the trumpet lines in a recording of Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto. Trumpets in Bach's time did not have valves. There were vent holes along the air column, but most of the changes of pitch were achieved by varying the embouchure. It is also possible, incidentally, to play the same notes with different combinations of valves. Finally, note that this tuba has five valves, not three or four, and it may be possible that the operation of the fifth valve by the thumb could be so subtle as to go unnoticed by a casual observer. Or maybe not. I'll have to watch this five or six dozen more times.
keyan kaderi I believe he plays a custom-made E-flat Miraphone. For sure, he is the finest tuba-player in the world! He fingers with both hands, and look how fast the valves rebound upon release!
For the tuba, for not sounding the best... This is the most impressive version due to how it works better for woodwinds, but considering the technical performance, this is PERFECT.
i've never really listened to classical music before or had any experience with orchestra/band so i guess i don't know what this piece is supposed to sound like, but i think this is really nice?? i think it sounds good and makes me happy!! it's delightful!!

Just out of curiosity and nothing to do just typed "How fast can tuba play" and found this. It's good to be curious just about anything when you have some free time.
I always thought, Lindberg playing the first movement on a trombone was incredible enough.... But the sheer speed of his tongue is amazing, never mind everything else
I didn't think it would make sense, but it's not a bad idea. I loved the second movement, it sounds better than the normal violin version (and also, being slower, allows for better expression).
I dabble at the tuba. I love the tuba. Mr. Baadsvik is as good as anyone in the world on the tuba. The first movement and the faster segments of the third are excellent reminders that not every instrument should play every piece of music. That velocity makes these segments an interesting curiosity that reminds the listener of what the piece should sound like without actually doing so. The second movement and more lyrical portions of the third, conversely, allows Mr. Baadsvik's musicality to shine. Bravo for giving this a whirl.

I think it's because, when I listen to this with the violin in place of the tuba I hear the ice crackling, the cold splintering air... all that stuff, it's there in the timbre of the instrument and the subsequent balance of the arrangement. There's none of that here, for me and from such a player that seems a bit... careless? All I hear is the tuba, the tonguing, the speed of rapidity of the fingering, the staggering range... But my absorption in the piece as a whole is gone. It doesn't say anything other than 'master class'. Most obviously, the tuba just doesn't sound very wintery, to my ear.
