  • The look of the Positive Film effect was changed on the GR III, that is old news. To find out how much Positive Film has changed I've taken side-by-side images with the previous GR model.
    *I only own the GR (2013) but the GR II (2015) has the exact same Positive Film look

    Thanks for your comparison and custom settings. I only own GR iii so couldnt really compare after reading on forums that earlier GRs has better +ve film. I think you are correct in saying the new tech have changed how the picture look on the same setting. Been experimenting with the custom settings myself and haven't found the sweet spot yet so will give yours a try.

Like you, my GR II broke down (but my fault, glass milk bottle broke and I had thewn my GrR in the bag between the car and home and the bottle broke when dropping the bag on kitchen tile, sinking my GR in milk befiore I could retrieve it...) and although I could have gotten the III for couple huundred more, I went on eBay and got another GR II. Later, if it or I brake it, I'll attempt the 3 (still ridiculously cheap for what it is) for the ibis, suposedly better DR, Mpx count and lower noise. But I can't wait for an hypothetical GR IV, see what they'll come with this time...

  • @frstesiste7670
    @frstesiste7670 2 года назад +1

    Interesting comparison. I didn't see the higher DR of the MK III (it might have been there), but it looked like the GR III exposed darker. Since you used manual exposure it could just be the tone curve, but it could also be variation in the ISO. Exposing darker will of course protect highlight at the cost of darker shadows, but it was difficult to judge/compare details in really dark areas.
    I dont have any GR III raw files, but Adobe make "camera profiles" for many models. It might be worth checking if they have that for GR and if so how it compares with JPGs from the camera.

    • @JakobIglhaut
      @JakobIglhaut  2 года назад

      I believe you're right about the tone curve. It seems that Ricoh has changed the default setting of the effect on the GR III resulting in a darker image. This can be adjusted with the high/low key setting of the Positive Film effect making the two cameras more comparable in terms of exposure.

    To me it looks like the GRIII needs to be exposed higher than the GR (or perhaps as you say the older one lifts the shadows). From the photos you cannot see that the GRIII has more dynamic range as even if it has colours in the skies, it has darker shadows. I prefer the greens on the GR positive film, not sure about the other colours, but I don't have the GR or GRII to compare. Would have been nice to see comparison where the GRIII exposure was lifted.

    • @mipmipmipmipmip

    • @JakobIglhaut
      @JakobIglhaut  2 года назад +1

      Actually, I agree. Indoors the GR 3 outperforms the GR 2. The step-up in high iso capabilities is really noticeable, though I don't see a significant difference in autofocus performance. Auto white balance is better on the GR 3 indoors too, which becomes very apparent for skin tones.

    Great comparison! I actually went through the same thing over a year ago I purchased the GR III and did not really like the Positive film on it so I purchased the GR II for the Positive film. I love the GR II but unfortunately it is having the same symptom as your GR I towards the end of your video. My GR II is under exposing by 1 to 1.5 stops in bright daylight. I have tried everything including doing a complete factory reset but nothing has helped and yes I have the ND filter turned off in the settings.

    It’s very interesting that all of the gr 3 shots seem like they’re taken 3 hours later in the day (very close to dusk in many shots) and that the colours in the gr 3 seem very dull and have no pop, kind of sad but is it more realistic? Your custom settings were very good but there is definitely something very odd there. I owned a gr original and a gr 2 but I had so many sensor dust issues (despite loving the image quality) that I gave up and have ordered a Fuji x70 as an alternative that I hope I will enjoy just as much.

    • @alanalain4884

      Have both the GRII (agree with the dust, what a pain...) and X70. X70 is a nice camera too, you should enjoy it (and you can use the Nisi filter kit, or circular ND/else filter on both, same ring adapter size).
      Better noise and DR on the Fuji, and I kind of prefer the Jpeg colors out of the box. The GR has always more difficult with color rendering in post vs the Fuji, be it Raw or Jpeg.

    Hi Jakob! Thanks for the video! Great trips and even greater images you took on them! I just picked up a used Ricoh GR II for 200€ and am in love. I believe it still has the same colour profiles as the original GR and has Wifi, so you wouldn't even have to carry a SD Card reader, to transfer images onto your phone. So I wondered, wouldn't the GR II be the sweet spot between the GR I and GR III? Also I wondered wether you had the internal ND turned off on the GR III for your tests? Since it can mess with the dynamic range a lot? ... I agree though, that the positive film looks a lot more film like on the GR I and also GR II i guess, compared to the GR III. The GR III's image looks almost like a sony :-D Beste Grüße und danke auch für das Lightroom preset!

    • @JakobIglhaut
      @JakobIglhaut  3 года назад +2

      Hi Simon! That's awesome, 200€ for a GR II is a sweet deal! I've paid about 250€ on average for my GRs.
      At one point I owned a GR II and the files looked pretty much identical to my older GR, however the screen was rendering colours differently so I switched back to buying used GRs. It's not worse, just wasn't what I'm used to. Wifi is a nice addition on the GR II although compared to a USB C card reader connected to my phone transfer speeds are really slow. Image transfer speeds via Wifi was improved in the GR III though.
      For the comparison the ND filter was off on both cameras, although I now found out that knocking my GR it randomly activates so I'm thinking of replacing it.
      I agree, the GR III's are leaning towards the digital look, maybe even sonyish ;) I would still prefer it over any Fuji though!
      Grüße!

      @@JakobIglhaut Thanks for your reply! Yes I got really lucky, but I was on the look out for almost a year now for an affordable GR II. I would have gone for a GR I as well, but there wasn't any cheap one popping up. I guess except the WiFi, they are pretty much the same aren't they? Maybe I'll get one in the future for a comparison. I totally agree, I haven't used Fujis much, but I much prefer Ricohs colour profiles over the Fujis. Fuji to me looks more like a filter, also a bit overdone in some cases. Ricohs colour profiles look a lot more organic and natural, more film like. I usually shoot quite a lot of film too. Have you ever used a Ricoh GR Digital, the predecessor of the Ricoh GR? In my opinion they produce the most beautiful colours despite their smaller sensor. CCD sensors in general produce amazing colour when compared to CMOS sensors. Also it's grain noise isn't too ugly. Great cameras and a lot cheaper than the GR if you get lucky. If only the newer GRs where more reliable when it comes to malfunction, dust, rain and so on. And I wish they would shoot decent video but I guess, this would increase the body size to a point, where it wouldn't be the same concept anymore.
      Oh and another thing I'd miss on the GR III is the built in flash. Which by the way, sony's build in flashes and the fact that you can tilt them upwards with one finger in my opinion is one of the best inventions since the invention of the camera. To be able to quickly bounce flash, wether it be for a quick image of something you want to sell on eBay or in portrait situations, makes for a much more pleasing look if you need it.

    • @JakobIglhaut
      @JakobIglhaut  3 года назад

      @@daurye92 GR and GR II are the same camera except for Wifi and when I compared them side by side I noticed that the screen on the back renders colours differently. At one point I owned a GRD IV and loved the outputs but the on/off and autofocus speed was a step down from my GR so I sold it. Weather sealing on a GR would be the dream of course but I get why they can't do it with the extending lens design. Regarding video....well Sony RX100's are known for decent video and as far as I know they are even smaller than the GR.
      For images with flash I sometimes take my FlashQ Q20 II with me, which is an awesome little flash that you can shoot off camera or on camera, tilt up for bouncing light off ceilings and I love that it can be charged via USB.

    • @daurye92
      @daurye92 3 года назад +1

      @@JakobIglhaut I'll definately look into the Q20 flash, the only downside though to me is, that for travels, it takes almost as much space as the camera itself. The RX100 and many other sony cameras are great for video indeed, but the RX100 has a much smaller sensor compared to the Ricoh GR and it has the "sony colours" unless you want to shoot in log and then post process. Also the RX100 is pretty expensive in my opinion. Not sure if Ricoh will even bother developing the video capabilities of the GR any further since it is a tough market. And even Smartphones can take pretty decent video these days. I want to move away from post processing though and want to try to use a digital camera more like an analogue film camera. It's just a lot more fun to shoot in my opinion and it is not much fun to post process.

      @@JakobIglhaut For the sake of being complete, the GRII also has a bigger buffer than the GR.
      Shooting in JPEG it would be very hard to feel the difference, if you shoot RAW and tends to shoot a lot/quickly it may fix the lag blamed in some reviews of the GR.
      I use the WiFi on my GRII a lot, I think it works good. The original webapp was criticized back then but it's actually really evolved and can be used on any device with a browser, including your Linux computer if you don't want to use your smartphone or a proprietary OS.
      But people prefer dumb native app that favorise the uniformity of the smartphone industry, oh well. Image Sync works ok to simply download the images on your smartphone. I find the speed perfectly fine for images, it may feel slow for videos download.

      There are the older models with a small 1/1,8" sensor called GR Digital or GRD. This series goes from GRD I to IV. Although they also have their qualities they really feel like older digicams, lower Mp count and slow to operate. Then the GR was released and soon after the GR II. The GR and GR II are the first Ricoh cameras with an APS-C sized sensor and they are practically the same camera, except the GR II has WiFi capability. Get either of those if you like the Positive Film look I presented in the video. After that there is the GR III, still with an APS-C sensor and some technical improvements like IBIS, but with less image character. The GR III is the latest camera.
      When hunting for these online make sure you don't confuse the GR Digital II and the GR II or the GRD III and the GR III ;) Good luck!
