Positive Film - Ricoh GR vs. GR III - SOOC jpeg comparison
The look of the Positive Film effect was changed on the GR III, that is old news. To find out how much Positive Film has changed I've taken side-by-side images with the previous GR model.
*I only own the GR (2013) but the GR II (2015) has the exact same Positive Film look

Is that the GR 10Mg or the 16Mg??
16Mp released in 2013
Excellent presentation and content. Thank you.
I’m with you - love the look of the GR positive film. I have the GRIIIx and have found the positive film a bit flat. I’m going to try your settings and see how I go. Thank you!
I'm still using the GR II the most but I also own a GR IIIx for the 40mm FOV. On the IIIx I've landed on a recipe and I'm quite happy with as long as I'm not using the II and III side by side. This is what I'm using on the IIIx: ruclips.net/video/IVMeK2_t80w/видео.htmlsi=JLU79zCwv69Zbib_
@@JakobIglhautthanks very much for the tip. I’ll give this a try.
Great video thanks 🙏🏼 What would be the best settings to shoot en the GR ?
Hello I have just bought a original GR (thanks to the influence of your videos) I am a beginner photographer and love the nostalgic film look the positive film effect offers, other than the effect tweaking you show in this video is there any other settings you recommend I change on the camera for best results. I’ve noticed the autofocus is not the best not sure if there is anything I can do to help with this. I really appreciate your help with this video makes such a big difference and help to first timers like myself.
This is such a no-nonsense, well crafted video, with a huge twist at the end.
Kinda disappointed when i got my griiix because somehow i noticed that the positive film on it is not the positive film that i want.. first thats the reason why i shift to gr from fuji.. but your vid really helps.. appreciate it ....
This is such a great informative video. I wish every youtuber makes videos this way, personally😅 no flash, no hypes, slow enough, no unnecessary things. Thank you and please keep up your work!
Dear Jakop, which file (Raw, jpeg) do you prefer while shooting positive effect mode.
Only jpegs store the color treatment of effects, raw is only raw data. So you can only get Positive Film color if you shoot jpeg. I however always shoot raw+jpeg so if I want to make adjustments to the jpeg I can use in-camera raw development. Hope that helps :)
@@JakobIglhaut Thank you for your respond...
Great video. I wonder if a custom GR III Positive Film could be made that comes close to the GR/GR II look?
Towards the end of the video I presented custom GR III settings (recipe) to better match the old Positive Film. But if you have a suggestion for a different recipe I'd be happy to try it!
@@JakobIglhaut A right - closer but not the same. Interesting, and interesting that the majority of GR III reviews don't mention this change in look, at least for Positive Film. To my eyes the GR I/II images are much nicer.
Nice comparison Jakob... I too have a GRii... A fun and convenient camera... So much packed in that little body... I'll be sad when mine dies...
It’s sad to think that it will most likely die. My GR1 did but GRDIv still going strong! 💪🏾
Love my GR3. I'll be shooting in positive film. Which white balance do you use? Custom?
Interesting video. I just sold my GR3 because I far prefer the Positive Film setting from my even older GRD IV. This little trouper released in 2011 has out-survived a GRI I owned, but then very shortly after developed the dreaded 'won't focus or fire' fault. Very depressing how poorly these cameras are built/made. My next pocket camera will probably be an Olympus TG-7. But I will never part with my GRD IV, as it is such a beautiful thing capable of such beauty.
Every time I decide I’m going to sell my GRDiv I change my mind. I just can’t do it😊
@@alanpayne7656 I know. It's nuts, isn't it? 😂
@@tomfenn7149 I bought the x70 to replace my broken GR1 but most of the time I grab the grd when I leave the house. I think I might sell the x70 and take another chance with a GR2 😬
Thank you for sharing this, it has helped me choose a camera. Love your instagram feed too. Please produce more!
Really nice video and comparison. Thank you for this.
I came for color comparison - your presentation and commentary were fantastic - but what I loved the most were images in the love story. Thank you!
GR3 looks better for me.
It's amazing how a simple yet instructional video can influence the decision process--thank you! I sold my GRII because the the III was coming and thought that image stabilization would be a great feature to have--I never used the flash. What a mistake! I never bought the III since the price was ridiculous. I went to film for street photography but I never reached the level of shooting I had in a short period with the GRII. How much did I miss my GRII? Years later I contacted the buyer (eBay) asking to buy my camera back; sadly he sold it. Lesson learned. :(
Thank you for your nice comment! I feel you...since I made this video I've tried many cameras but I keep going back to the GR II. Every time I shoot with it I get some keepers. If you're in Europe I'll sell you a GR II. I have some "in stock" ;)
Hey! Would you have another extra by any chance? I sent you an Instagram message request. Cheers
Am I the odd one? To me, the GRIII looks better in almost every photo comparison. I mean that's how I would prefer my shots, slightly darker. It looks more organic/film like.
Thank you for a really informative video. I have both cameras and now will do my own side by side comparison. I love the positive film option but I have never looked at the photo's side by side.
putting the photos available to review in description has been a great value, thanks so much, apreciate that
Still too expensive even use😒
Pulled my old GR off of the shelf after nearly 8 years of not using it. Battery swollen, surprised that Ricoh still sells new DB-65 batteries on their online shop (in Japan).
It’s true that the positive film On GRi looks very nice and special. But I have a GRiii and don’t think I’ll « downdate » lol, I shoot mostly raw btw. Thanks for the video!
i wonder if setting griii's exp. comp. to +2/3 or +1 with the custom settings would give a closer look to the grii. it looks close, just darker still.
Or ++ some shadows maybe, it looks like GRi had more details in the shadows somehow
what setting WB you use ?
Multi P-Auto WB, without any customisation
@@JakobIglhaut THX, nice video Bro <3
I agree with you! I much prefer the look of the original. I’ve recently started looking for a GR but it seems like they’ve made a ton of different ones all with similar names. How do you tell the difference between them all?
There are the older models with a small 1/1,8" sensor called GR Digital or GRD. This series goes from GRD I to IV. Although they also have their qualities they really feel like older digicams, lower Mp count and slow to operate. Then the GR was released and soon after the GR II. The GR and GR II are the first Ricoh cameras with an APS-C sized sensor and they are practically the same camera, except the GR II has WiFi capability. Get either of those if you like the Positive Film look I presented in the video. After that there is the GR III, still with an APS-C sensor and some technical improvements like IBIS, but with less image character. The GR III is the latest camera. When hunting for these online make sure you don't confuse the GR Digital II and the GR II or the GRD III and the GR III ;) Good luck!
@@JakobIglhaut Have you had any issues with dust getting on your sensor?
Great video
thank you for this video!! I'm glad you made this comparison because I too was missing the magic I felt with the GRII in the new GRIII. However, your presets get me close to the images I longed for so thank you for this!!
I have the GRii and to be honest I prefer cameras with a more limited dynamic range. I find that cameras that have such a huge range, the images look to fake and digital, rather than an organic look of a limited range. The GRii looks so filmic especially in black and white. The fact it retains the flash is a huge selling point as well. What on earth were Ricoh thinking off taking it away!
Probably cuz most people don’t use it, and people serious about them want a higher quality flash
They took the flash away to accommodate a larger lens extraction motor on the GR III, allowing faster start-up
A very weird statement to me, because film has the highest dynamic range, and the "huge" DR of GRIII is just a very average one even in comparison to my much older but FF Sony A7II. Higher range just allows you to correct the larger exposition mistake, that's it.
I’ve revisit this video and I see you've got the GRIIIx in other comment. Will you keep GRIIIx or sell it in future?
The gr3 look better
GR wins it for me. GRIII seems very flat and needs more processing work in post.
what would you guys pay for an GRD at the moment? (01/23)
Can you make a comparison between the Bleach Bypass effect of both cameras? I loved that effect on my old GR, but that camera is defect and the Bleach Bypass on my new GR III feels somewhat different. I would love to see a direct comparison.
If I remember I'll take a few comparison shots in the beginning of the new year. I never use that effect myself though
@@JakobIglhaut That would be awesome! As far as I know this effect is not as popular as the Positive Film, though it still has a small but quite enthusiastic fanbase.
Have u tried this? ruclips.net/video/BKRRqsn7m2o/видео.html
Great comparison! I have the GR ii, was thinking of upgrading to GR iii. But GR iii took out the exposure compensation dedicated buttons and the built-in flash. Looks like I'll stick to the GR ii, this video helped. Thank you!
Good choice to hold onto the ii, I have the GR and only because i searched high and low and couldn't find ONE GRii, some times some local shops will list one and it'll be quickly snatched up while the GR and GRiii have plenty of second hand stock so I 'm guessing the GRii so the model that people want to hold onto.
@@dunkyourdonuts2282 Is there the same difference in Positive film in GRii as in GRiii or it is still the same like in the original GR?
The GR 3 looks like it underexposes to be honest.
The GR 3 looks like it underexposes to be honest.
Have you messed with customizing the white balance at all? Or are you leaving WB at factory settings?
In this video I had not yet messed with WB shifts and left it at default AWB. During later tries I had it set to M2,A4 but still wasn't all that happy with positive film on the III(x) so stuck to my GR I
The thing I miss the most about my original gr is the exposure comp buttons. I regret selling it 😢
I get that, that exposure rocker is perfect
Excellent video! The colors in your travel photos look amazing. Are you using any custom settings for positive film with your GR, or is everything left to default (5, 5, 5)? Thanks!
Thank you :) For all travel photos I showed I had the settings on 5, 6, 7.
@@JakobIglhaut Can I ask what settings you're referring to here? (Great video btw!)
@@jacknewthoughts these are my adjustments on the positive film effect on the GR II. On the GR III the settings are different
This or the x I usually shoot on a nifty 50
Thank you for producing this video :)
Has this improved at all in the past year, and is the GR IIIx exactly the same?
I'm not aware of any changes. GR IIIx is exactly the same as GR III.
Great, now I need to take my GR for a burn on Positive Film . I'm a Vivid or Bi pass guy . Damb , got a flat battery . I'll get back to ya .
I was looking to upgrade from a ii to a iii for the ibis, glad I didn't now!
The difference is caused by pixel density. The same thing happens to Nikon DSLR after the D700. To this day, the D700 produces better color and film-like look.
Partly maybe...but the difference predominantly stems from the way sensor output is interpreted and converted from raw to jpeg from the cameras image processor. The difference is thus rooted in software I believe. Newer sensors might also provide better signal to noise ratio and engineers are likely trying to squeeze every last bit of dynamic range out of those. I guess that results in flat looking images and by aiming for neutrality in colours they also seem more dull. With the new Positive Film effect they seem to have gone for that more modern look too...protect the highlights, save the shadows, don't oversaturate... Love my D700 by the way ;)
Was only shooting film before and just bought a Ricoh GR, happy because I hate neutral looking pics
