    IMPORTANT NEWS FOR RICOH GR III USER: Ricoh finally worked with Adobe and Camera Matching Profiles are now available for GR Cameras inside the RAW Developer! This is huge news! Finally! But Cobalt Profiles are still useful for those who want to use certain looks on different camera systems. But GR users should celebrate because you don't need Cobalt Profiles if you want to use Positive Film, Monotone and so on... :-)

    • @hansheiterkeit
      @hansheiterkeit Год назад +1

      Thanks and great! I can see six Camera Matching Profiles in LR for IPad called Hard Monotome, Positive Film, Soft Monotone, Standard, Vivid and Monotome. Are these the GR3 Profiles? How do they compare to the Cobalt GR profiles?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  Год назад +3

      @@hansheiterkeit Yes they are Ricoh GR III profiles! I compared them with the Cobalt profiles and the Ricoh profiles are more accurate I would say. But the strength of the Cobalt Positive Film Profile for example can be changed and the Ricoh Positive Film Profile can't. So you always get 100% of the look of the Ricoh profiles with the official profiles. Which is fine but it is also nice to play around with the amount slider and use the filters more subtle. I like to use 30% Positive Film with my Nikon RAW files for example. But if you only use a GR than the official profiles are almost exactly the same as the jpeg results :)

    Gut das ich vor einigen Tagen/Wochen noch deine Presets gekauft habe, wollte sie einfach mal auf meiner GR ausprobieren.
    Cobalt habe ich schon mal mit geliebäugelt seid deinem ersten Video aber habe noch gewartet, werde mir die Presets von denen auf jeden fall mal zum testen hohlen.
    Und das Geld das ich für deine Presets ausgegeben habe ist ja auch gut das es jetzt bei dir landet, alleine wenn ich sehe das du so offen damit umgehst.
    Hoffe das du irgendwann die Camerastraps endlich rausbringst :D

    Haha 😂. 7:30 that guy leaved the same comment on my channel when I said about Cobalt Profiles - in how you can get Leica bnw tones on Fuji. I've tried to explain him, but noo... Better talk to a wall. So decided to end the discussion 😎 (but the comment it's identical I believe).
    Cobalt profiles rules! Saved the color for me for my Sony camera.

    Thank you so much for making this video about the Positive Film Emulation, Samuel! I didn't know about this company before. I always wanted my GRII's look for my other cameras because being limited to 28 mm didn't give me enough freedom for other types of photography.
    I created a LR Preset by myself, but it never came close enough to the original GR's colors. In my understanding the reason therefore is that a preset is always a linear change to a dynamic RAW file. But sensors doesn't behave linearly so that two different sensors can't get the same colors and tones with just statically transducing the parameters from source sensor to the target sensor. It's a bit like playing the piano. The softer you strike a key the sound becomes not only quieter but also more dull and less clear. This differentiate from piano to piano slightly so that you have to adapt the force to the keys accordingly to achieve a similar sound.
    Did you ever shoot a Pentax body? I absolutely love the colors from my Pentax Q7 with the "Muted" color preset. Unfortunately a more potential Pentax KP didn't give me exact the same results. Maybe Cobalt Image will bring a dedicated package of Pentax profiles that includes a Pentax Q.

    I feel that a lot, because I know exactly how such a small shade that you just can't get right can drive you crazy. Yesterday, after 4 years, I managed to find a way to convert a Kodak 2383 LUT including the Arri Alexa Film Matrix for our ProPhotoRGB color space that we use in Lightroom. It was adventurous and a wild journey, but I get it now. Now I'm off to Kodak Vision 3 and then hopefully I'll finally have what I've always wanted.

  • @gerrymexx4085

    One thing you should be aware of is that you have to buy a Starter Pack for every camera you want to use the GR look on. For example, I used the Pentax K1, the Fuji H1 and a mobile phone on holiday (plus the GR). That means I would now need three starter packs at about 50€ each. Actually even four, if I also want to process the photos of the GR with the GR profiles generated by Cobalt (in the LR development module). Then there are the actual GR profiles for another 50€. I don't find the pricing model very pleasing and a very clear disadvantage compared to presents, which are globally applicable.

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 Год назад +1

      Presets can't be globally applicable. Presets apply changes with disregard to colour relationships. E.g. common ones just boost blues, oranges, and desaturates greens. Profiles on the other hand are more akin to a LUT that remaps colours and has some of relationship between them. It's the same reason why you could use Fuji profiles on your RAW files and they all look good with zero corrections, but when using presets, you need to fine tune colours.

    I have recently seen your original (or let's say first?) video about Cobalt Image and their profiles. I've been trying to nail a filmic look for years now and have never been 100% satisfied. Then I tried them out, used the Nostalgic Negative Profile that is normally exclusive for the GFX100S on my XPro3 and I've never been more happy. Literally every image is exactly the way I want it to look. These guys do a great job! Also big thanks to you Samuel! Without you I wouldn't have found Cobalt Image and would still be mad while editing - LOL.

      I haven't used Cobalt's film emulations but REALLY like DxO FilmLab 6. I still have gobs of Kodak BW400CN I'm shooting from years ago and other than how film handles highlights (bloom) my M240 files look just like my film scans. The beauty of the Cobalt stuff is that it's a profile IN LR...whereas FilmLab 6 is a stand-alone hook in LR...in DxO PhotoLab5, FilmLab is built-in as a profile.

    cobalt profiles are kind of fine if you do just slight light/shadow adjustments. otherwise your images will have weird artifacts in shadows and/or highlights. I guess the reason for that is most of the camera related profiles based on cobalt modular which is quite contrasty. It feels like cobalt profiles reduces dynamic range of raw images
    I haven’t tried ricoh profiles, but fuji profiles does not look similar to original fuji colors.

    I agree with you 100%. As a BW shooter I've tried it all on digital, and Foveon and the OG Leica Monochrom have been the best tones I could find, but wanted to use my Leica M240...the Cobalt CCD Monochrom profile is SO good! I start of with an "F7 Linear" profile which gives me a flat image that has much more latitude to start with than any other profile I've found. I think my final output is somewhere between an M246 and a Sigma DP Merrill...and that's not too bad. I also think that an M11 with this would probably give the M10M a run for its money.

    So glad you have finally found a profile that can express your feelings after trying to do it by yourself for 2 weeks Lol. I think this is how the thing works, sometimes we need somebody's (who is an expert) help to fulfill our need & desire. Also, people like clients, they care about the result. In Samuel's case, he is his own client. Just imagine if he become my or your client and he asked for a GR positive film feeling photography while our camera is not GR, of course we will do the same to get his feeling satisfied.

    I think eventually people have to realize there are enough good film looks and color grades to stick to, and the rest has to come from the photos themselves. No sense in making 1000 black and white looks for the sake of being “unique” for example.

  • @-grey
    @-grey 2 года назад +6

    I'm not a colour scientist, but I I think part of the dynamic range and contrast that is missing from emulating older cameras, is purely that the new sensor is newer.
    The colour profile can be an exact match, line for line in the encoding, but if the new sensor can read more DR natively the contrast will be slightly different. Those variances will have to be matched by eye.
    This is what I think makes the bulk of "magic quality" loss for Fujifilm across generations. The reason that the X-T1 is so different to the X-T2 is because it's a shittier sensor, but in a charming way. I like shitty highlight and shadow retention it feels nice and bold. That shit is magic.
    I haven't tried the GRs across generations, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is part of it. Low pixel density, and designed DR loss mitigation.
    Same with Canon, because they have notoriously bad DR.
    /conspiracy theory finished.

    • @-grey
      @-grey 2 года назад +2

      It was cool to see that you also raise the mid tone luminance in the colour wheel. ✌️
      This is why I think it's good to intensify the whites and blacks a small amount, while softening the highlights and shadows (the opposite). It gives that smooth tone curve roll of early digital, that was probably the method to increase DR on the old sensors, while keeping the crushed/clipped look.
      I will stop blogging here now. 😂

      I totally agree that sometimes perfection gets in the way of certain beauty aspect because not everything in this world is perfect and some unperfect items are more unique and beautiful than the perfect ones. But even with 13pro files i can't get it to work. 🤷🏻‍♂️ but it works for the gr 👍🏻

    So how does this compare to the DXO film packs?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 года назад

      I am not super familiar with the DxO Film Pack but I had a quick look. Looks like they are offering presets. And nowhere I can find information on how they were made which probably means they were using the editing softwares to create the presets. Cobalt Image should therefore be much more accurate and they can guarantee even results across different systems.

      @@SamuelStreetlife for information, this is an extract from the DXO Filmpack 6 user guide. Hope this is seen as useful. Love your channel even though I’ve not got a GR! (Yet!!)
      “More than 80 high-fidelity analog film renderings
      DxO FilmPack preset renderings are created in DxO’s laboratories using an exclusive scientific process of exhaustively profiling each film. This process is based on a series of shots of specially-calibrated targets and as well as real-life subjects taken with the film being profiled. The film is then developed by the world’s most reputable processing laboratories, notably PICTO and Arka Lab in France, and Duggal in the United States, and is then subjected to high-resolution digitization in order to measure the film response and to extract the grain matrices. This process has allowed DxO to perfectly reproduce high-fidelity rendering of the characteristic appearance, colors, and grains of 83 legendary films - color negatives, black & white, slide, and instant snapshots.
      Fuji and cinema digital renderings
      DxO FilmPack also offers you such preset renderings as the digital simulations of certain analog films available on Fuji cameras, as well as the possibility of giving a cinematic aspect to your images.”

    There is no such thing as "your own look", your starting point is always the color science of the camera brand. These profiles essentially are color profiles with their own color science. They're not presets.
    I have not used these from Cobalt, but when scanning negatives to raw files I use profiles for various film emulsions with the scanner and its software.
    I'll have to try out the Cobalt profiles.

      The beauty thing of the Cobalt profile is that they re-interpret the built in color science of the sensor. Yes, you are getting their "color science" at that point, but they have tried to keep it as neutral and accurate as possible. I'm amazed at what they've done with their "Monochrom" profiles...re-mapping a bayer sensor to "match" what the M9 does is wizardry.

      Moin Eric, du brauchst leider noch ein Base Profil für deine Kamera. Das findest du auch auf deren Webseite. Ich hatte es zwar kurz im Video erwähnt aber haben leider viele überhört. Aber damit klappt es dann👍

      @@erickessner4362 Es müssten Anleitungen dabei gewesen sein. Du musst die Profile als ZIP datei importieren. Dann eventuell PS oder LR neustarten und dann sollte es bei den Profilen erscheinen.

    Anyone else having issues with these profiles? I just purchased them but it wont let me import to the latest camera raw within photoshop, and they don't show up after importing into the latest Lightroom on Mac...

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 года назад +1

      You need to buy the base profile for your camera first and then you can use the other emulation profiles. I know it sucks a but having to buy two things but it only works like that... I thought I mentioned it in the video but probably should have made that clear.
