SOLVED! My RAV4 briefly shudders when I first start it (rattle, rumble, clatter, knock sounds)

  • (MY ORIGINAL POST) My 2010 RAV4 makes a noticeable rattle or rumble when I first start the engine. It's hard to hear in the video but in person, it's a strong sound and vibration. The only things I can compare it to is the "knocking" sound some cars make when you use the wrong octane of gas in them.
The previous owner told me, "It's a great car, except it makes a loud racket right when you firs start it." He was right. It is definitely coming from the engine (this is not the annoying drivetrain rattle I mention in another video). The sound happens whether the engine is cold or hot. After just a brief racket, the motor proceeds to idle and run smoothly.
My amateur hunch is that the piston firing timing is screwed up and the cylinders are firing at the incorrect moment. You know the piston is still traveling upwards in the cylinder when the fuel ignites too soon, but the piston has to complete its upward path before it can start the trip back down.
I think this happens for just a moment before the onboard computer detects the bad timing and corrects for it. But if that's what's really happening, then the engine components are probably beating up on each other briefly, every time I start it.
Anyone else hear this noise? Any other theories or suggestions?

That rattling sound is nothing to be afraid of it's just the sound of dry lifters moving. With the car off, the engine oil that is keeping everything in the engine lubricated is just sitting at the bottom on the oil pan. When you start the car, the oil pump will disperse the oil everywhere to lubrice your lifters and what not. Which is why you only hear that sound for a few seconds before it stops. You can also watch your dash lights for the oil pressure light. It should stay on for a few seconds, and then dissapear along with the noise.

That symptom you described is yet another different issue when start up from cold. Nothing to do with this video of a warned up engine actually driving.

Mine does this sporadically. 2012 base model. 2.5 liter.
It feels like the timing is off when I start it. It will do this for 2/3 days then just go away for a while. I've also had a problem where under heavy throttle it feels like it gasps for air then takes off like it should. I also have a uneven idle at some stop lights with a horrible low idle. But it's all intermittent. Some days it runs like a clock and some it feels like it's going to fall apart or stall. No check engine light on and no hidden stored codes found in the ECU. Been dealing with this for 4+ years now.

Don't panic. This is a very common sound on many Toyotas. It is not as serious as it sounds. Search for VVT (variable valve timing) issues. This video is a good example of many: ruclips.net/video/21o6PcGFH7w/видео.html (Camry and RAV4 share this same issue.)
Bottom line from one commentor: "I've read every single post and comment on this page and other pages relating to this issue and I have only read about ONE case where the rattle (supposedly) led to engine failure. There are numerous comments about driving the car for many, many miles without an issue other than hearing a harsh noise at startup. This is one I am not going to fix. I'll bet there are people that can drive 300,000 miles with this issue. Love to see any posts about this."

My 2010 RAV does the same thing

My 2010 Rav4 just started doing same too. I suspect there was a time it ran on low oil for some times. It is like that is when it started. When i turn on the key and hold for about a minute, the rattle is minimum. Otherwise without doing that, it rattles very loud for a second then runs great the rest of the day. Could it be the timing calm shaft sprocket that needs changed? I did that for 2012 Honda CRV and it solved the problem

I have same car, wish I got the V6 lol noise won't hurt anything though. These engines are solid.

I have a relative who knows cars like Jimmy Hendrix knew the guitar. He insists that the 4 cyl Rav4 is far superior to the 6 cyl. He did not elaborate (he is a man of few words).

@@JRInnes he's probably right. I've heard the v-6 is expensive to do certain repairs and maintenance on

    • @Maxx134a
      @Maxx134a Год назад

The V6 is much much harder to work on as it is crammed in one side. Longevity may be similar but maintenence /repair is worse. Most V6 have been abused and have higher insurance as well. More Front end suspension wear and more gas mileage too.
Both engines are quite quiet. It's just suseptible to tire road noise.

I have a 2007 Toyota rav4, 2.4 liter that just started doing the cold start knocking sound. Only lasts for a 5 to 10 seconds. As for your tire pressure light, check your spare tire. I had same issue awhile back finally figured out to check spare tire and light went out.

I'm having same issue. Is there sensor on the spare tire? 🤔And is the fast rattling sound fixable? Or leave it alone?

It could be nothing a really worry about, it could just be your battery not sending enough juice. You can test it with a car battery charger or with jumper cables and another car. Now what you're going to do is turn the car on, now with whatever method you chose, connect the cables to the battery, and see if it stops the noise. Might just be an old.

I have a 99 RAV 4, 4 door. I have had a thrumming sound intensifying over the past few weeks. A rattle in the front end dash but that might be an issue with the windshield and dash ( windshield replacedna few years ago).
    Any ideas?

So much for Toyota being reliable. They can't figure out that they need a pre-pump to move oil around before the vehicle starts.

I read all the comments and fixes, and yes there was a fix for the rear, but THIS noise is 100% the torque converter, period. The proof is flipping that gear from "D" to "3", plus other tricks like letter foot off gas and re-applying. Also,
Another symptom not mentioned, but most probably there, is a slight jerk when applying gas from a standstill.
Torque converter is a true fix, not just tranny oil & filter, because although true toyota says that tranny filter is meant to last, the issue is that the torque converter wear cause tranny oil & filter to become full of debree, and the magnets in the pan cannot attract it all...
So those with this issue, that don't correct it, or at least change the filter/oil, will be a fault for neglecting the tranny issue to become worse and eventually needing major transmission work.
I just bought a Used Rav4 from toyota dealer, and they took it in for this EXACT same issue, and they stated that have to replace the torque converter.

nah you're wrong its a cold start rattle/knock from a vvti cam gear sprocket. I have a 2011 rav4 same exact issue, was resolved by replacing the cam gear sprockets.

I thought I was the only one with this issue , the only reason I haven’t taken it to the mechanic is because after a while during a day of driving that loud noise seems to diminish. But every morning I wake my neighbors up because it’s that loud and bothersome

I wonder if you have the Toyota variable valve timing vvt-i variable valve timing ignition or maybe it's just called VVT variable valve timing

I do have VVT. It is embossed in large letters on top of the engine cover.

Here's a guy who takes his whole engine apart to show you what's going on. Since he's already done all the work, you might as well learn from his pain. You could remove, clean, and replace the offending Variable Valve Timing Gear, BUT DON'T! This is not a threat to your engine according to all of my research. ruclips.net/video/gwJ5BBHb9W4/видео.html

Wow - thanks so much for this help. Our 2010 video was in the same situation just past month - was going to go to Toyota to check it out (they'd probably charge us $1K for that !!!) Now we know just to live with it and save our money.

The thinner oil pumps quicker to the cam phasers on the cold start up. This is common My daughter also has the same vehicle, sometimes it still clatters about how yours did on your first start up. When I had the 5-20 in the engine it would last at least 8 seconds but I changed the oil and I can live with it. Also there is a updated cam phasers I checked with my local Toyota dealership they said 5 months back ordered and they are not cheap but I can get a dorman brand from Oreillys for 81$ the kid behind the counter said it was updated and lifetime but if it goes out your engine is wrecked anyways. I’m still trying to find someone who has used the doman brand . I’m with you partner I don’t much care for that sound either but thinner oil has made a huge difference. I use the mobile1 0-20 in my Tacoma and my wife Lexus it’s great oil
