  • Kevin Harvick holds off a hard-charging Jeff Gordon, on the final lap, to capture his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory in only his third start. Harvick's win was the first win for Richard Childress Racing after the passing of Dale Earnhardt. The finish to the 2001 Cracker Barrel Old Country Store 500 was only .006 seconds. Jeff Gordon would take the points lead after this race.

    I think, as far as "Best Finish" goes, Darlington 2003 still takes it.
    But as far as "Best Multi-Car Racing For the Lead", the last 10 laps of this race takes it in a landslide. At one point, the top 5 cars were racing inn the same formation as the dots on the "5" side of a die. Unbelievable. I love it.

      Noonecanknow Miner What are you watching? Back then they could race side-by-side beyond the first 2 laps after a restart, likely for a debris caution. The racing was so good back then they didn't need to have debris cautions for every little piece on the track.

      @davedaniel11 9 лет назад +1

      Noonecanknow Miner oh, well yes that's what I was referring to. But even in the 90s the drivers had more personality, things were less corporate and vanilla. Even without late-race restarts it was enjoyable to watch the races play out. Look at Atlanta '92, even today's chase couldn't manufacture a championship finish that exciting. You'll never see an owner/driver do something like that again (Tony doesn't really count, he's only half owner and it isn't a small team).

  • @retrocny5625
    @retrocny5625 6 лет назад

    Look at the racing that was going on for the lead with about 6 laps to go. 5 cars all side by side, all very much capable of winning. Compare that to today's GEN 6 car and the racing it produces, and it's no wonder the sport is losing popularity. You simply don't see this kind of racing anymore because the new cars are so reliant on aerodynamic grip. These cars were too but not nearly to the same degree. They relied more on mechanical grip from the tires and their suspension package. The cars weren't as sealed to the track like they are now, and you can see it in this video when they run down the straights, they're jacked up on the springs and they look like pickup trucks lol. They get lower in the corners thanks to the suspension travel but again, not like they do now. Now they use extremely heavy duty springs and pretty much bind them up so there's very little travel and the splitter stays right on the ground. I'm talking like 10,000LB front springs. They're tiny in length but the coils are massive.
    It's one of my pet peeves with the current cars and the rules package. They are trying to fix it but until they take away that front splitter and take away the no ride-height rule, the "dirty air" phenomena is going to keep ruining races by making it extremely difficult to drive in another car's wake without losing a ton of aero grip and therefore performance. That's also why you see just a few cars dominant from week to week because they've figured out the current package better than anyone else and if you can get out in clean air, the only way you're gonna get passed is via pit strategy or tire fall off. It's not uncommon to see someone like Harvick or Truex Jr get out to a 3 or 4 second lead over everyone else and just run away with it, even with the stage racing arbitrarily pausing the action. I truly wish NASCAR would go back to a similar rule package like they had in this era. You can keep the cars looking like the modern production vehicles, but you can go back to similar rules regarding the chassis and front suspension. They need to take a big swing at it otherwise the racing isn't going to attract new fans, and bring back the old ones. Oh, and bring back the unrestricted engines with 750-900HP at most tracks. You can still run the more restricted 550HP(give or take) engines at places like Michigan or Atlanta where you want to keep the speeds reasonable. Ideally you want to increase the straight away speed but DECREASE the corner speed...and taking away that front splitter would do that.

      They can't advertise tobacco in sports anymore because the liberals were more concerned about kids using tobacco instead of worrying about illegal narcotics. Tobacco sponsors in sports is banned world wide. RJR doesn't own Winston anymore, it is now owned by an Imperial Tobacco subsidiary. The British own it in other words. Reynolds American bought out Lorillard Tobacco Company for $27.4 billion, in order to alleviate antitrust concerns, Winston, along with the Kool, Maverick, and Salem cigarette brands were sold to Imperial Tobacco for $7.1 billion.
