  • We'll take a look at the many layers of the history of Smallhythe place. From the 16th-century Tudor building, to the home of one of England's finest Victorian actresses Dame Ellen Terry, to the museum and theatre created by her daughter in her memory.
It's hard to believe that this National Trust property was built in a once-thriving shipbuilding community with access to the English Channel. Changing landscapes then turned Smallhythe into a farming community and Smallhythe place into a farmhouse with a barn.
In 1899, the story took an unusual turn, and Smallhythe place became the home of celebrated Victorian actress Dame Ellen Terry, as a retreat from her life in London, and London's West End. She lived her last 20+ years here, passing away at Smallhythe Place.
On her death, her daughter Edith Craig (Edy) turned Smallhythe place into a museum to celebrate the life of her mother, and converted the barn into a theatre to stage productions in memory of Ellen Terry.

Wonderful video ! To learn that Ellen Terry and Sir John Gielgud are related is a great piece of trivia . Acting must evidently run in the family . A very charming house also .

It is a cold, very wet Winters day here in NZ - so thank you Gary and Janis for providing this beautiful video, which brightened things considerably. Sad to say, I never did visit this delightful and fascinating museum, or, indeed Smallhythe, and far too late to change that circumstance now :(
As always, stunningly filmed by Janis, so we have good opportunities to see and appreciate the interior rooms - and the additional theatre was most interesting - so thank you so much :)

Good morning, well our weather is unusual, today looks like it's going to be glorious, and we have had many weeks of rather pleasant weather, but we are missing that all-important rain. However, it now looks like we're going to be getting some over the coming days, fingers crossed because the garden needs it.
We will probably join a few dots and create a little road trip linking Smallhythe to a few other fascinating places where their fortunes have changed over the centuries. Although today we are heading into East Sussex for another road trip with a dash of history.
As always, thanks so much for taking the time to comment, hopefully the NZ winter won't be too dire, and spring will bring a new start (That means we'll be heading into Autumn, but we can handle that 😀)
      All the best,
      Gary & Janis

A lovely tour, thank you. I believe Ellen Terry was the aunt, or perhaps great aunt, to Sir John Gielgud.

Thank you, she was; acting was in her bloodline. When you look at her body of work, it was quite varied, from notable Shakespeare roles, to comedies, amazing woman.
Thanks for taking the time to leave us a comment,

lovely video - hoping to visit this summer - my grandfather made the silver casket that Ellen's ashes are interred in St Pauls Covent Garden. What amazing women these were

How fantastic, what a wonderful story. We love St Paul's at Covent Garden, a real gem hidden in plain sight, remembering so many fine actors & actresses.
Make sure you check the times for Smallhythe place, it's not normally open on a Monday or Tuesday - www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/kent/smallhythe-place
Also take the time to check out Tenterden close by - here's our video on that; ruclips.net/video/0hT95AjXwcM/видео.html
Whatever happens, have a wonderful time.
      All the best for 2024,

Thank you for this, Gary and Janis, I remember visiting in the early 90s with my partner, Alf, by the way the wrist that I broke last year in Iceland has healed, but not quite straight, love your videos, gentle, well informed with no raucous music that doesn't fit with what is being looked at, keep up the good work, hope you are ok

      Hello Linda,
Nice to hear from you again, glad your wrist is all healed.
Smallyhythe is a little special, we would love to get back before the end of summer to catch the garden in it's full glory, let's see if we get lucky?
Thanks for taking the time to comment, take care and hopefully hear from you soon.
