  • A tour around Sissinghurst Castle Gardens in Kent. This Elizabethan manor house surrounded by beautiful gardens is part of our Historic England series of videos. 🔗 • Historic England
We will take you on a tour of 'the Castle', and more importantly, the grounds and gardens redesigned in the 1930s by Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson, the last private owners of Sissinghurst Castle, before being handed over to the National Trust in 1967.
However, the history of Sissinghurst dates back to Saxon times when it was known as Saxenhurst, and stated as a pig farm. Its current buildings date from Elizabethan times, and in its day, the manor house was extensive. However, in the 18th Century, it was leased to the British government, who used the buildings as a makeshift prison for French sailors in the 7 Years War. They revolted at the squalid conditions and burned down the majority of the original manor house.
The environment you see before you today is the vision of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson, who created a series of gardens that are now the main attraction.
As mentioned in the video, you can stay onsite at the Sissinghurst Castle Farmhouse - a great location to explore the Gardens

Wow Martin, so sorry to hear that. It must have impacted your visit outside of the cities at lot; I remember the countryside being badly affected. Sissinghust Castle Gardens are a beautiful place, and I hope you get the chance to come back someday. If you do, check out Scotney Castle too.
Anyway, best wishes from the UK on a beautiful spring day,
      Gary & Janis

Oh thank you so much for this delightful video of Sissinghurst Castle - as you have taken me back to my childhood :)
Although I was born in Cheshire, I was raised by an Aunt and Uncle ( the Major ) in nearby Royal Tunbridge Wells, so with my Aunt being a fanatical gardener there were many, many visits to Sissinghurst - although the gardens were not quite as expansive as they appear now I think.
Anyway, absolutely super - and something for everyone's interest, be it buildings, history or gardening - marvelous !

🙏 Thank you so much. Royal Tunbridge Wells is on our list to capture, but it is a challenge of how to get the best out of it. I would imagine you spent many an hour on the common, climbing & exploring the rocks. Anyway, back to Sissinghurst; I always remember it as Sissinghurst Castle, but I think it has been 'Rebranded' by National Trust to add the garden, and they are exquisitely maintained. Fascinating story over time too. We have a few more historical homes & sights planned as we are now armed with our National Trust Membership.

@@OurWorldForYou Oh I say, a visit to Tunbridge, that would be fun, but yes, not a great deal to see - The Pantiles I suppose ( 1700`s ) for it`s Italianate elegance. RTW became a favoured retirement town for the military officer class - hence my Uncle ( Major ) but I rather think the lower town offers little to look at.
Ah yes, the sandstone rock outcrops - perfect for a growing children. Let me see, can I recall some names ( no, I refuse to Google such things ) er, Toad Rocks, High Rocks, Bowles Rocks, Harrison Rocks ( I think - does that seem correct ? ) and so on. The wonderful thing about RTW was it`s central location to two wonderful castles - Hever Castle to the North West, and Bodium Castle to the South East - considered the most ' fairy ' castle in England :)
Anyway, thanks ever so much once again for bringing the delights of Kent for anyone to enjoy - simply superb !!

Ahh, you mention Bodium, yes. that is on our list, possibly later this week, We will post the video in a few weeks time. We have another Kent Country home before that. We will wander around RTW and see what we can capture, not sure when that will be. Anyway, take care and keep tuned in.

@@OurWorldForYou Bodium Castle is on your list ??? Absolutely super :) The sort of ruined castle most people can imagine - not overly large, and perhaps not as historically important as many other castles, but it ticks many boxes - turrets, drawbridge, large moat, fabulous location, not over restored and so on.
Can`t wait, and thank you :)
