  • A walking tour around the historic medieval town of Sandwich, close to the Kent coast, in the south east of England.
We start at the historic Quayside, One of the ancient Cinque Ports, where in 1520 Henry VIII's fleet set sail for the historic Field of the Cloth of Gold in France, watched by the King himself. From here, many left England for good to set up in the American colonies, landing in Virginia.
Time has changed the landscape, and now it's the course for the River Stour as it makes its way out to Pegwell Bay, and the English channel. Now you can take trips out Seal watching - 🔗 www.cptcolinsriverbus.co.uk/
Briefly crossing the river, we take the view back from the Old Toll Bridge to the 14th-century Barbican Tollgate and the Bell Hotel on the quayside.
Heading into town, we explore the medieval Strand Street, before passing along the Old City walls or The Butts, past Sandwich Town Cricket Club, and onto Loop Street and Delft Street (One of the many of the town's links to the Dutch).
Following Delft Street, we arrive at Sandwich Town Centre and its Guildhall. The Guildhall is home to The Sandwich Town Museum. 🔗 www.sandwichguildhallmuseum.c...
From here we get a view of Sandwich's historic nature, and the buildings that surround the old Cattle Market.
Our journey through Sandwich takes us up New Street, past the former home of Thomas Paine, whose work 'The Rights of Man' inspired the American Declaration of Independence.
We continue to explore the town, taking in King's Street, Holy Ghost Alley, Market Street, Potter Street before returning to the quayside to take in the Fisher Gate.
Thanks so much for watching, and we'd love to hear from you so please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of our travels: 🟢-

I must give a vote for The Sandwich Shop a great place for breakfast, lunch or tea. I have always found the staff there very pleasant indeed and well worth their tip.

Awww brings back so many memories for me. I would ride my bike there every day as a kid and grew up fishing there and all over there when my dad took me and would go to all the parks and the many other things and then on the walks my parents loved going on there, then as time went on I had my own kids and I took them there for years as they grew up and I hope that they will take their kids there and enjoy the place as much as me. It has always been such a beautiful place to me from a little kid right through my 40s and even though I now live in NRW Germany, it still is and always will be my favourite place to be, what ever I am doing there. I love how it just has not changed in so many years, I mean I walked around sandwich as a kid over 40 years ago and apart from the vehicles being new, the place itself is almost identical to the first time I went there. I cant wait to take my German wife and my new son there, if truth has to be known, I wished I had moved there rather than Germany, maybe I can talk her round some day, we will see lol

      Hi,
It will be lovely to visit Sandwich with your family. You're right; it probably hasn't changed a huge lot over the years, and on a sunny day, there really isn't a bettre place to visit in Kent for a good dash of nostalgia.
I hope you all make it back here someday, really soon.
      All the best

1:25 Thank you for this excellent video of the town I live in. Allow me just a minor correction; the P22 patrolled the River Rhine, a long way from the border between East and West Germany.

      @OurWorldForYou  Год назад +1

Thanks so much Joe; I am glad you liked our video of your town. A beautiful place, and of course, you are correct the P22 was a Rhine patrol craft, and the Rhine is nowhere near the East/West Germany border. I meant to say between a divided country, rather than on the divide, my mistake.
Thanks again for taking the time to comment,
      Happy & safe travels,

Hello my friends once again :) As a medieval historian, I have visited Sandwich on many, many occasions -such an important port from early Saxon times. A few mentions - the Fisher Gate, originally the main gateway from the port, with the custom house just further up. The Guildhall still retains the wooden paneled courtroom within. Do take the steps up to the top of the tower of St.Peters Church - only recently installed with the additional wooden steps during my last visit in 2016 - tight fit in places - but the view is well worth it - and people should explore the alleyways that connect most of the streets - wonderful place and endlessly fascinating. Very nice tour - top shelf as always, and thank you :)

🙏 Thank you again. I have seen Sandwich described as one of our Medieval treasures, but as I researched using Historic England's excellent resources (historicengland.org.uk/), I noticed many amendments over the later centuries. I would have loved to have seen the guildhall in its day.
After Janis watched the video, she remembered why we didn't climb the tower - face masks. Face masks & spectacles don't mix, especially on a climb. One for next time, perhaps?
      Thanks again, take care.
      Gary

@@OurWorldForYou Yes, face masks and spectacles are a tricky combination at any time :( I only need to wear a mask for about three hours a week- to complete my shopping, as I live out in the wop wops and fairly reclusive at that. difficult for many retail staff though - all day, every day !!!
      Thanks again !

Just outside Sandwich either side of the Deal road are two villages, Ham and Worth. The sign post has all four names on it. So Ham Sandwiches are Worth a great Deal. I was born and brought up in a small village 1.1/2 miles from Sandwich and went to secondary school in Sandwich.

      Hi Carolina,
That's a good question, and it depends on how much you want to see. In 3 - 4 hours you can have a good look around; however, if you stop for lunch, and pop in a few places, you could spend a whole day. (The video was shot over 2.5 hours, but we've been to Sandwich many times)
