According to this approach, why does the Torah instruct one to fast on the 9th of Elul if it's a day of preparation and specifically preparation by way of eating. Any why does the Gemara conclude "one who eats on the 9th it is as if he fasted"? If the whole חשיבות of the 9th is that it is a day of preparation for the fast of the 10th why is the 9th connected to fasting? If it has no חלות יום מצד עצמה, and it's whole חשיבות is הכנה then why describe it in a way which suggests parallels with the 10th rather than in way which highlights it's utility for the 10th?

The Rav's answer is that eating on the ninth (of Tishrei) is a kiyum for the tenth in the same way that the mitzvah of עונג שבת takes place through preparing food on Friday for Shabbos. The kiyum is not a Friday kiyum - it is a Shabbos kiyum - although the preparation takes place on Friday. By preparing food on Friday and by eating it on Shabbos one fulfills the Mitzvah of עונג שבת - it requires two days. The Rav does not say this, but its almost as if preparing food on Friday and eating food on Shabbos is as if he ate לכבוד שבת for two days.
