If you are new to mechanical keyboards, you may find if quite confusing and difficult to choose a key color! What do they all mean? There are so many! Well today I take you through a journey where we learn everything there is to know about all the different kinds of mechanical keys, and how to choose your next mechanical key board!
    Cherry MX Colors and Attributes
    Cherry MX Blue
    50g Spring
Has Audible Click and Tactile Bump
    Cherry MX Brown
    45g Spring
    No Click
    Has Tactile Bump
    Cherry MX Red
    45g Spring
No Audible Click or Tactile Bump
    Cherry MX Green
    80g Spring
Has Audible Click and Tactile Bump
    Cherry MX Clear
    55g Spring
    No Audible Click
    Has Tactile Bump
    Cherry MX Black
    60g Spring
No Audible Click or Tactile Bump
ProTip - There are really only 3 different kinds of switches, they just happen to be available in two different weights, The best way to think of it is like this.
-Blue and Green are the same, only green is a stiffer spring than blue
-Brown and Clear are the same, only clear has a stiffer spring than brown
-Red and Black are the same, only black has a stiffer spring than red.

I know this is an old video now but it is really well done with good explanation and humor. My one and only complaint which actually applies to everyone who has even recently made this type of video is you talk normal and we have volume set then you do a couple of key presses and we have to turn up volume to here what we are listening for; then suddenly you are talking again and we are rapidly turning down volume again and so on it goes.
It would be really awesome if you and everyone who does these instructional videos put the keypad right up to the microphone to do the key depressions so we can here the actual key click. I appreciate it also that you did not just mash the keys making us here the overly loud bottoming out key sound which masks the click we are listening for like so many others after you have done. It would be actually nice to have a period of time where you go through all the keys depressing them without talking with the keypad near the microphone.
Good explanations and humor though. Thank you for the video.

personally cant beat red switches... when you type you fingers can learn to just lightly dance across the keyboard... I went from like 75wpm to 85 solid, 110 bursts on red switches but I also use a keyboard professionally and bought an identical one to use both of which are like classic US layout I'm used to... for gaming yeah, you're gonna press keys like thousand times in a session right so a light switch is the way to go to avoid fatigue in the wrist

  • @AirIUnderwater
    @AirIUnderwater 10 лет назад

Another really big difference for gaming is that the actuation point and reset point of the keys are a bit different. The biggest difference here for people looking at gaming mechanical keyboards is that the MX Blue has a much lower actuation point than the reset point. All of the other ones are basically about .1 mm from actuation and reset. So you can press until it actuates, then release it a bit, then press it down again and there is only .1mm difference. The reset point on the blue is ABOVE the click and tactile bump about .6mm off. So to rapidly feel and rapid fire the blue it is harder to do as you're rapid firing potential is stuck to the depressing limit of the key itself. Also, the moment of actuation for the keys are different. So, assuming all things equal, if you press each key with the required actuating force at the same time the red and black will actuate before the brown and red. And the brown will actuate before the blue. Clear and green subbed in for brown and blue. I know these things don't matter to many people but I play fighting games on the PC with a keyboard. I've been doing it my whole life. These things matter greatly to me and I can hit a keyboard through my favorite fighting game and get annoyed. I would never game with a blue/green. I hate red and black because you can end up bottoming out too much and that means wasted effort because you never really know when you've actuated the key. So brown and clear are the only ones I like. I'm actually greatly looking forward to what Razer has claimed to be able to do and see if they managed to get an even tighter reset and actuation ratio in with the tactile feedback of a blue. :)

I bought a Ducky Shine 3 with MX Blues, it's awesome for typing and gaming. I don't get why people say Blues suck for gaming.

    • @Genos_25
      @Genos_25 10 лет назад +4

They don't suck for gaming, they just aren't "optimal" because you have to be deliberate with every stroke. Some people prefer that but other people prefer to have the linear switches like the red and black because they can keep the switch hovering over the actuation point and it makes double tapping somewhat easier... but at the end of the day its a very personal thing and it comes down to personal preference :P Personally I prefer brown because I enjoy the tactile feel without the audible click (which I find somewhat obnoxious), and I find it is great for both gaming and typing :D

Nope, it's not a MX Green. The green switch that Razers uses is a Kalih switch.

Toxic You're neither Right or Wrong, they don't use Cherry MX or Kalih, they use their own Switches :)

KloudAlpha you're wrong. they are kailh switches, they are just marketed as "razer switches"

we're both wrong, Pre-2013 Model was Razer Switches, and the Post-2013 Model is straight up Kailh switches

KloudAlpha 2014 was the one with kailh switches, the 2013 one has the true cherry switches

VERY good video. I have a much better idea of what I want now even though I can't tell the difference in how they feel.

I brought a "sampler kit" from WASD Keyboards and wired them to leds so I could see the actual switching point of each type of key, it's good to know where each key activates.
btw, I got browns... Blue's was just way too noisy and clears were so firm that you might as well just stick with membrane keyboards and I like the feedback feeling which reds don't provide.
One last recommendation, I brought gold looking keycaps for just the was and d keys, they cost about $35 with shipping (steep, I know), but they look mint. I can't look at my keyboard without smiling, seriously. F*****g pimp.

Awesome man. What switch is your personal favourite? I think I might go with brown as I've found an awesome quickfire tk in white :)

my first mech keyboard ever was the k90 with the mx reds. i enjoyed the reds, but found that they were too squishy for my taste. I've been using lots of blues and browns lately, but with PBT keys

I have chosen the cherry mx brown myself because it does not sound so loud at first. and secondly, I find this much nicer. I do not know if the cherry mx blue sounds pretty sharp. That also has to do with the fact that I am pretty sensitive to very high and very low sound. A very high beep or a very heavy bass does not sound so good in my ears. Even if a heavy engine of a stationary truck runs, I just get pain in my ears.

Even tho I already knew how mechanical keyboards worked I still checked this video out cuz your videos are awesome. Anyway my 2 cents on these is a lot of ppl really like the brown switches. I think the black switches are the best for gaming. The red switch is also good but pretty bad for typing. The black switch has a great balance to both typing and gaming imo
