Appreciating the AR10 content. Here in South Africa I bought the Smith & Wesson M&P10 Sport and its a great 308 AR platform. Never jammed or failed on me after about 500 rounds, even with some cheap ass Norinco ammo. Yes, I had to replace all the furniture with Magpul options but furniture is a personal choice thing. I feel with the M&P10 you get the perfect reliability and well made metal parts but suffer with trash-tier furniture. Biggest problem with gun buying in SA is the price! My M&P10 Sport cost the equivalent of $2 000 USD which puts it way outside the price range of a budget AR10. But in a country as dangerous as South Africa you need the firepower.

I've played around with a few of the lower-end (3 PSA 10's, 2 M&P10's, various DPMS's of both gens, DB10's from Diamondback as well as some 716i's POF's, Armalite's, Colt's, etc... Not all mine, just troubleshooting for other people, friends, that sort of thing) and there are three issues I've noticed that I've since started rec'ing to others getting into large-frame AR platforms: moving to the heaviest short buffer you can find (at least 5.4oz... I believe this is what the AR Stoner is), upgrading to Springco .308 spring, and if you intend to run a lot of rounds, a JP "High pressure" LR308 bolt + firing pin combo. All together it's about $260 in parts, but it can really boost the reliability & longevity of the platform, even the cheaper ones.
Oh, and make sure the bolt catch/release is heavy/strong enough to handle the mass/pressure of an AR10. Some companies will use a standard AR-15 catch that WILL break at the worst possible time, so that's another part to check immediately. Sucks the customer has to do these things, but this is what happens when there is no industry standard...
I'd bet the aperture on the bolt for the firing pin was too large for this Anderson (probably a Toolcraft BCG or one of the other companies that makes BCG's for many different companies) and that was where you were running into problems. The aftermarket bolt/pins specifically marked "high pressure" (not the same as HPI stamped on the bolt) solve this. Even if you aren't having an issue with the standard one yet, wait until you get a few thousand rounds through it & you'll probably notice it becoming a problem.
One other thing that seems to be hit/miss even amongst different examples of the same model: some guns don't run well with Magpul's M118 or their standard LR/SR mags (M118 has longer COAL for longer/heavier bullets with a purple/maroon follower, standard has a brown/tan follower) as the case mouth snags on the edge of the magazine when the bolt is stripping-off a round. I've seen it cause stove-piping and all kinds of issues... If you ever start having feeding issues while using Magpul's, dremel a little crescent shape out of the bullet-end of the mag. Load a few rounds in & push a cartridge forward (one for each "side" since it's double-stack) to check if it's still catching on the polymer and remove material until the rounds strip cleanly.
First time I ran into this I spent hours checking headspace, checking feed ramps, etc thinking I had a major issue and it ended up being a bit too much polymer on the magazine, lol. You don't need to remove much material so start small and work your way up. This isn't an issue with Hexmag/Lancer or any other polymers I've used, just Magpul. After this is resolved (if it's an issue) they're extremely reliable mags, but I'd say the Lancer's are the best for this platform. If you like steel and can find them (not made anymore but some hit the market from time to time) the DPMS steel mags are built like a tank and are dead reliable. When they pop up you can usually get them for $15-18, so buy all you can when/if you see them.
I know, overly long post... Just trying to pass-on some of my observations as I got into the AR10 and LR308 game a long time ago, back when they were not very reliable guns (especially the DPMS's, and I mean even more issues than now, lol), so users kind of had to figure it out on our own. It's still largely a DIY platform, but once you get enough experience with them you can get them running really well. Sig 716i, POF's, and the higher-end CMMG's are probably the best out-of-the-box guns I've ran into that aren't 4k+ like a Knights or SCAR17, but none of them are as reliable as a mid-tier AR-15 or AK. 60+ years of battle testing tends to breed reliability...

Assembled my own 16" Aero M5 w/ a BA barrel (so, also Aero) and a Toolcraft Nitride BCG. It did require some tweaking - adjustable gas block and I upgraded the buffer to a H3 JP SCS. It works great now. Have several hundred rounds through it (my own reloads) and it's humming along well enough. My takeaway: AR-10s are finicky creatures that require more TLC than a standard AR-15. Anyone getting into the platform should either build their own (and expect to tweak) or buy a proven model from a reputable manufacturer. I have never personally seen a budget AR-10 that didn't have issues. 2 pennies.
Edit: even Stoner's OG AR-10 had issues. Eventually it was tuned into a very fine rifle (albeit, a bit brutal on the shooter), but it was built around a specific cartridge standard. Most shooters will fire off many different budget cartridges, which will inevitably lead to inconsistent results. Same can be said for the AR-15, but it's a much more forgiving platform.

I have to say my saber m110 at home In 308 has had no problems. I'm about 500 rounds in it now. Haven't tried too many brands of ammo. Mostly aac. It really likes the aac Sierra match King load coming in at .75 moa. Federal Gold medal match Sierra load also did about as well.
Only problem i had was a failure to eject and failure to feed but it was user error. Forgot to adjust the gas settings after changing ammo.
But that is just my experience. I've been happy enough with mine to put a magpul prs,a Vickers sling, swapped the magpul bipod for an atlas, and a vortex viper pst gen II 3-15 on it.

One was fine from the git go and the other had a bad extractor right out of the box. PSA quickly sent me a new BCG under warranty and a label to ship the bad one back. Both rifles have been functioning fine for me.

I've had my fair share of M14 style rifles. It's just a poor optics platform. You'll never be centerline over bore with a mount. The bolt roller assembly wasn't a upgrade compared to the M1 Garand. That split ring has a tendency to come flying off the bolt roller. No bueno. (My uncle talked about the gas cylinders rusting in Vietnam.) Chassis systems are heavy. Making it basically the weight of a M249. And bedding is a no go any time. Not inherently accurate either.
I met Ron Smith of Smith Enterprise. To my surprise he made mention that in the modern era of the early 2000's that the M14 was not that good. And he was reworking all the Army's M14's. He just said it was happenstance the .mil needed a answer right now. They they were ushered back into service.
Marine corps and Navy had chassis varients. Basically the M39. I was at SOTG when both the M14 DMR and M39 was being tested. As was the SAM-R and then Mk12. Mk12 was the superior platform.
I had a Smith Enterprise rifle. I used it in competition. Cast reciever varient. All USGI parts. Sold it. For a premium. Bought it in 1997 for $1,100. Sold it for $2,400 in 06. I was always getting offers above and beyond from the CMP guys. 😂
Not a good gun. It is better reliability wise than these low rent AR10's. But both are garbage in reality. It takes money to get good into the .308 game. The M14 costs money too. And you'll never get to the good part, with that system.

I bought mine pre-covid in 2019 and I broke it in as if it was a competition long-range rifle, totally unnecessary I know-but I wanted it to be as accurate as it was going to ever be. It’s a consistent MOA rifle with the occasional sub-MOA with the right ammo, atmospherics and trigger puller. So I’m quite happy with it, needless to say. And if some folks have minor issues with the SFAR, it's a platform worth making work right. Hop did the hard part figuring out how to superize the gas system. Thank You

Between myself and many other people whom know how to check spec on ARs, as far as lowers go, Anderson seems to have the most in spec receivers out there of anyone. Seen lots of Daniels and Knights and Blacks put expensive brand here, they all are selling a lot of out of spec or edge of spec receivers. A forged lower is a forged lower. Spec is what matters. Andersons more often than not are center tolerance. Just thought I'd throw this info out. Not saying all their components are perfect. But if you want a perfect lower buy an Anderson.

Thanks for the great review! I can imagine how expensive it is but especially so with the glorious 308 ammo needed. I think the achilles heel to consumers getting good info on these rifles is that NOBODY fires them enough to get them to the breaking point (which I have decided is the 2-3k round mark) So everyone is walking around with their "great" 308 AR's that they put 150 rounds through and then replaced in the safe waiting for said rifle to be waiting and ready when the foreign army needs to be repelled, but the surprise is waiting when they need it to survive beyond that magically fail point. We can all go to a weekend carbine class running 556 and put a gun through its paces, but 308 with its recoil and cost usually get left at home. So long story short thanks for taking the time, I will run over and drop a few bucks in the plate. Please keep us abreast as the gun gets more use.

The best budget battle rifle I've seen to date is a PSA lower combined with a BCA upper. Mine ran flawlessly, just pulled them out of their respective shipping boxes, slapped 'em together for the first time right there at the range and went at it. I did have a pair of bolt-overs on the first 10 rounds, which I determined after some research was caused by being overgassed. An adjustable gas block took care of that permanently. I understand that overgassing is a common issue on the "AR-10" platform.
My only other complaint was that the gas key wasn't staked properly. A minute with a hammer and punch corrected the problem. Both my BCA uppers had this issue (and I've seen some other reviewers saying the same thing about their BCA's) so I highly reccommend checking the stake job on your BCA gas key.

I got my PoS on sale for 500, its a 16 inch right hand side charging rifle in .308. Its been reliable-ish, so long as it's not suppressed. It can't handle all the extra gas. Pretty accurate from what i could tell, but BCA is also a coin flip company. They also sell 6.5s and 22-250s for around that same price point though. So it might make for an interesting review along the lines of "the cheapest 6.5"

The main difference is in the quality control of assembly; which is why I like to buy kits and put them together myself; plus you save a lot of money that way too. I always drill and pin the gas blocks also; which is where most budget rifles fail, by the gas block coming loose.

With the bent cotter pin and the primer issues, it looks like the bcg is having a lot of sizing issues. Undersized bolt, oversized firing pin hole, etc etc. That cotter pin specifically is a sign of too much gas pressure acting on the bolt and driving it back inside the bolt carrier.

That cotter pin being bent is a sign of poor bolt tail seal at the rear of the piston. Gas is leaking by and slamming the firing pin into the cotter pin every shot you fire.
The bolt was also short (or the firing pin too long) if you measured the protrusion, it’d likely be far longer than intended.
The “break in period” is largely a myth. The gun is either usually built correctly or not. Although, they can “smooth out” after the parts mesh together with many hundred rounds of firing. But that’s only something you can feel when cycling the rifle.

I just miss buying 2 MOA steel case wolf for just above 7.62x39 prices (at the time) 😔 Hornady Black shoots good, and both Hornady 123 SST's and Barnes Vortex shoot great with impressive terminal performance, but blasting away 15rd or 25rd mags all day out to 600 yards without losing sight picture even while standing/supported will be missed with no more decent steel option... I hear the last batches of Wolf were terribly inconsistent, and at $0.70 per round you might as well find some $1ish brass FMJ that hopefully shoots decently and can be brass goblined back up, although not high quality like Hornady brass... 6.5G doesn't seem to be very picky, no matter if it's the ultralight 16" build or the AR-10 weighted 18" larue 😂 everything has shot well enough to suit my capabilities... Just glad I never hopped on that 6mm ARC train and bought ammo and barrels just for Hornady to update/upgrade it already 🤣 Apparently the ammo orders for those DOD contracts didn't expand into making a hot new affordable civilian 6.5G replacement like they expected? 🤷‍♂️ I just looked at the numbers and realized factory loads wouldn't really provide much advantage, honestly worse for a hunting caliber... Maybe the DOD just didn't want military cartridge compatibility with Serbia? 😆 Or maybe some random requirements that made 6.5G a non starter? I have no other reason why the DOD wouldn't have just used 6.5G instead of paying Hornady big money for marginal gains with 6mm ARC development and production while they already produced 6.5G?

Running a PSA lower with an upper i put together myself. 18" HBAR from Ballistic Advantage, Sharps BCG, with a PA SLX 4-16 in HUD DMR with a top mount Holosun 407c. It eats a steady diet of 155 grain HPBTs. Weighs around 12 lbs fully loaded w/ light. It holds sub MOA groups out to about 500. No brake, all flash hider.
I'll gladly take the extra pound of weight on the shorter HBAR to gain accuracy. I carry 10 mags between my chest rig and my pack, and carry a comped Glock 19 with 5 18 round mags with that setup.
It's heavy, but its accurate out to about 800 yards. It does have some close quarters capability, but its very hard to run up close. I recommend if youre going to run a 308 as a primary, you focus on mid to long range with your optics setup and carry a reliable, tested pistol for close quarters. It adds to your overall weight, but improves your overall capability if you can carry it all.
I also have a lightweight build w/ polymer TN Arms Co lower on a fluted stainless 24" .243 Winchester upper. The barrel came from X Caliber. Its running the J Comp v2, an adjustable Sharps Rifle Co BCG and an Armaspec Stealth Recoil buffer. It has less recoil than my 5.56, and the drop at 1000 yards with my match loads is less than 8 mils. It houses a US Optics 2.5-20 34mm scope and a top mounted Holosun 507c. With scope, it weighs just under 11 lbs.

have something very similar, ditching the STR since the Viper Pst 1-6 is so heavy... might just ditch the Viper too.

I've beenn looking for a 308 semiauto ( DMR ish) , and after way to fucking much research the most reliable modern options I've decided on tracking down and testing before purchase are the Sig 716 and the Zastava m77/ Riley rak 308C. Generally DI 308 Ars Ive seen are nowhere near as reliable as Id be comfortable with depending my life on, So I'm leaning towards the 308 AKs, a used Zastava m77 if I can find it around 800-1k or a Riley Rak308C which to be honest I was put off when I first heard about it, but turns out they are literally Surplus M77 parts kits that Riley assembles on US Milled Recievers. So I hope this comment helps other Big Chimp Brain dudes like me and saves yall time.

Sig just started sending out Romeo 9Ts to influencers and says it has super special reflector stuff so the enemy cannot see your red dot reflection from the front end.
That gave me an idea for a new video. Test the light emissions out the front of all red dots and holos and illuminated LPVOs and prisms you can get your hand on under night vision.
Is it just fudd lore that an enemy with NVs (or even without) would be able to see your scope emissions even when "passive" aiming? Or does it make sense that Sig wants to sell their $4k red dot without front reflection?

It's a gimmick imo, outside of maybe cqb?
You can see if it you mistakenly leave it on a daylight setting. But the NV settings are exceedingly faint.
Think of it this way. How far away can you see the glow of NV on your eyes? Or the LED on a LAM to indicate that it's on? Both are significantly brighter

BCA side-charger in 6.5 (on an Aero lower). The side-charger is such a better buddy to a scope, which is why I chose it. No problems. Just shoots. You have me thinking I will get their 18 or 20" 308 upper (

I have the Sig 716i tread snake bite se. It was 1500 bucks a few months ago now it’s 1899 mark but you can still find them cheaper. It’s the best budget ar10 I have seen. Hop seemed to like the first version. The snakebite se has upgrades. Check it out. Pretty sweet two toned black and fde match lite trigger. Flash/muzzle break combo. As soon as my can gets out of jail I plan on taking it out and seeing how well I can run it fast. I might upload a few videos. Hard to find time for anything nowadays

For a budget option to have one glaring problem that was fixed pretty easily by sending it back, that's not half bad in my book

I mean my first gas gun was a full ar308 from bear creek arsenal I got last March. Got it on sale for somewhere around $575. Went to battle with 2 whitetail bucks this fall and emerged victorious..
