Really good diag. Clear for us to follow. Alarms bells rang when I saw the twisted wire!! Coil packs had been changed, why? Was there an intermittent fault. Quick fire the parts cannon. Someone had been to the wires by the fuel pump but one assumes failed to diagnose the actual problem. I know you can't comment too much Mr. O but we all know these guys. Get it done as cheap as possible because the dam car keeps letting me down and is costing me a fortune. That is because it is now 50% Chinese and your paying hacks who don't know how to Diag
Amazing they wanted to do it themselves however, the wire tie to the shroud over the top of the engine to the exhaust header was the first tip I noticed that "cheap" was in the car budget. Just the towing fee's ate up any savings for DIY unless they had the AAA towing twice for the same breakdown. Also, knowing this, it's likely the driver rarely fills the tank opting for $10 here and there at filling stations which pretty much will get the fuel pump on the road to failure much faster. Drive it almost empty a few times over and it will fail fast they say.
Hi Eric, Toyota OEM parts are reasonably priced, usually. So, after he pays for another tow and the after market parts and his downtime, does he actually save enough to make it worthwhile? But, besides that, I guess the experience will serve him well when he has to replace the Dormaan part next year, 😍
Don't you just love it when you do the hard bit of diagnosing them problem and they want to fix it cheap themselves ! Oh well they end up regretting it sometimes.

He's opinionated and seems to think he's the only voice of reason and honesty on YT when in fact he's sometimes just plain wrong. He obviously edits his videos to show believable results too. The thing is, he is often right about things as well, and I think the trick is to not worry about how he steers those who are ignorant about cars and instead worry only about what you know. That way you can extract the useful info and toss the BS. Plus, I like the way he conducts the symphany with his arms and talks with sand in his throat.
I've done just the opposite on my mothers Toyota. There was a sensor that you need to get from underneath and I took it to Firestone. Told them what I thought it was and they replaced it. Same with the rear struts. The car was sitting funny. Broken spring. I had them use strut assemblies. It cost just a tad more then me buying them and doing it myself.

A few years i had a 520bmw come in on a tow truck Hard to start and stalls. I did the same as you with a squirt of "Start ya bastard" and it fired up and stalled. I sat in the car and tried starting it and i could smell burned plastic insulation. You could hear the fuel pump grinding in the tank I thought to myself, Why it it still turning it sounds awful. I pulled the seat base out and the last 3 feet of the wiring into the pump mount had melted burning a hole in the mount its self. I went and checked the fuse and someone had put a 30 amp fuse in the block. I pulled the pump out and got a new pump and a second hand pump mount. Then replace 3 feet of wire that i got with the pump mount before i found good wire. That way i got an original plug that fitted the pump mount. He was lucky it didn't go up in flames.

"Ring the bell" perfect timing with the phone ringing, like it was planned! Great diagnosis!
SO, is it goings to Ivan’s garage for a 2 part video fix?
About right but it will be a $1 to watch it, As Eric did the first part for free - he needs to pay for the parts and his $200 an hour labour rate some how...………...
Oh man that's raw
You made my day when I saw you taking off and reinstalling the wire holding the plastic coil cover. You could not beleive your eyes.
It tickles me how these guys will pay a guy to diagnose it, but then they have a buddy who is a master mechanic and can fix it cheaper.
Brake clean sound on a fuel pump diagnosis video????? Am I dreaming? Nice work
Really good diag.
I love to watch your videos. You sure do know your job. I'm a mechanic myself and would love to learn from you.
Damn, bro!!!!! 300k subscribers!!!! Treat yourself to some icecream. Thanks for the content....
Hi Eric,
Toyota OEM parts are reasonably priced, usually. So, after he pays for another tow and the after market parts and his downtime, does he actually save enough to make it worthwhile?
But, besides that, I guess the experience will serve him well when he has to replace the Dormaan part next year, 😍
the actual advantage to OEM parts is :"They'll FIT with out alterrations"
Don't you just love it when you do the hard bit of diagnosing them problem and they want to fix it cheap themselves ! Oh well they end up regretting it sometimes.
Superspeed diagnostics, the bulb of truth :-D
I have seen alot of those coil clips taped they break easy and no one wants to replace them ... nice video
Toyotas are still great vehicles though and highly reliable but no vehicle is truly bulletproof.
Depends on the caliber!
I like the Fluid Film test light! Thanks Eric!
Bet his friend's name is "Scotty".
best comment! "Don't buy from this auto parts store!"
Meal in a can for a guy like me. Thank you ! I'm growing more knowledgeable thanks to your post.
people kill me..tow truck expense..buddy's house..cheap ass aftermarket pump..and a sorta EFF you to your work and honesty..SMH..hope you get to say to him..I TOLD YOU..someday..

the difference between Dr. Eric & beam me up Scotty is all talk & Dr. Eric actually works & fixes vehicles!
Things I learned from Eric O. Today... you can use brakleen as starting fluid
You have to be careful, there are some kinds that are not flammable.
@@michael931 good point...
Your wife (or you, if that's your thing) can use it to remove nail polish too!
@@FaustoTheBoozehound good call out :)
Back in the 90's they started coming out with that water based crap, And I do mean CRAP.
I'm not sure why I like Scotty Kilmer, but I can see why many think he's just full of himself.
Sometimes it better to just take the diag money and run
Cliff Hawthorne very true....
Sometimes but that fuel pump is gravy
I've done just the opposite on my mothers Toyota. There was a sensor that you need to get from underneath and I took it to Firestone. Told them what I thought it was and they replaced it. Same with the rear struts. The car was sitting funny. Broken spring. I had them use strut assemblies. It cost just a tad more then me buying them and doing it myself.
Remember, it’s the customers money, so it’s his choice who and where the work gets done. However, cheaping out with parts and substandard labour, just ends up costing you more. With SMA doing it, it gets done right, the first time.👍video🇨🇦
Figured by the butt connected coils the owner went to the $1 mechanic. I wouldn't be surprised if the tow truck was a regular truck with a tow strap.
Mrs. O calling the shop to please us with the ringing phone. Oh boy what a treat having brake cleaner and ringing phone =)
Loved the alternative fuel. Also, since we got the fluid film bulb holder/stabilizer, but was only half of the can, shouldn't we have gotten a 1/2 Sheep sound effect? lol
First words out of my mouth were fuel pump.
Thanks for the video. 👍
Did any notice the mileage? Close to 200k and needs a fuel pump not bad!
My daughters demolition derby ride is exhibiting fuel pump symptoms, fired with a squirt of starter fluid. Checked the fuse, and swapped the relay w the ac relay still no go. My plan is to as you did pop the cover and plug and test for juice. Just for an added twist she reports mice have shredded everything in the glove box, praying the didn't munch on the fuel pump wire!!!!!! Job for tomorrow!
Fluid Film can lampshade for the win! Dude is probably having towed to Kilmer's place for further bailing wire installation.
Never in a jillion years would I thought to use brake cleaner to turn my car over. Why even use gas anymore. Thanks SMA!
Never could understand why someone who buys a Toyota for its reliability chooses to replace parts with cheap Chineesium garbage.
If you keep doing it you will end up with a Chinese car with Chinese reliability.
With you on this one
Everything comes from China anyway. Also the oem is an assembly, the cheap pump from O'Reillys is just the pump it's self.
I had an issue using a aftermarket part. intake cam sensor on my bmw. My original one that was apparently throwing a code actually worked better than the replacment with no code! Once replaced with known good no more issues. After that few $ mistake I only buy oem/eo parts. Not worth the trouble.
Yes, I have learned with my Camry and Jeep - if you purchase Chinese parts they only last 1/3 as long as OEM.
@@FishFind3000 I think years ago you could get away with none OEM parts but the shit coming out of China makes it like Russian roulette
Still gotta love those Toyotas, since all you have to do for access is pull the back seat cushion.
First year for oil starvation generation. 2007 2.4L
I loved the "that's it needs a fuel pump" head fake only to see you in the next shot getting ready to troubleshoot the wiring leading to the fuel pump followed by the line "now don't go making that mistake."
Hey Mr. O, do you charge a nominal fee for diagnostics? I hope you do. Sometimes the diagnosis is more involved than the fix and can save $ and headaches. All the best, appreciative fan- Chris from Ca
Very good... compression seems good, so then check spark, then SUBSTITUTE FUEL TEST!
Thanks, that's one trick I'll definitely remember!
Owner could have dropped a dime & spurged on a zip tie...
It's right above the engine, who's to say it doesn't get too hot for those cheap dollar store zip ties? Also zip ties aren't reusable so something tells me this guy wouldn't buy them.
Some zip ties are reusable - the lock widget has a little tab you can press to release it.
DaddyBeanDaddyBean but those cost more. This wire he could steal or just find on the ground.
Yeah put a zip tie around the exhaust manifold. That'll work.
@@jamiebales8394 Oh, come on now, it'll work just fine! (Until you fix the fuel pump and start the car.) ;-)
Thank you Eric. Good job. As always brother, appreciate your videos. Have a blessed and safe week.
The good ol I have a friend who can fix it cheaper trick lol. So he pays towing to your shop. Pays you for Diag. Pays tow bill to buddies house and he’s saving money seriously customers sometimes make no sense all that to save 75-100 bucks. Do as we do charge them for time spent ship it out the door then 2 weeks later there towing it back in because there friend is a Hack jobber. On to the next !!!!!
Darrel Booth I saw a video where a friend was helping another and because some other place had brake pads for $2 less he wanted to return his and make him drive 1 hour to get the cheaper ones. After that they got into a fight and are no longer friends.
Reminds me of a coworker that was going to do a drum brake job on his old rusty Volkswagen Bug. Unfortunately he was unable loosen the axle nuts to remove the drums (no air tools). He saw that Pep Boys was having a free special on checking brakes. They removed the drums and told him that he needed brakes. He said he wouldn't be able pay for a brake job at this time. Went home and did the brake job himself.
best mechanic on RUclips keep up the good work learn so much keep up the good work one of the best Diagnostics I've watched you a d scanner Danner love watching your videos
Yep i would not be trusting cheap/ aftermarket parts from ebay. Oem would have been my choice for a fuel pump.
Sometimes you can find cheep OEM parts on eBay. From a dealer.
@@dav8388 Yes true however you can buy copies of OEM too causing more trouble that it's worth, a friend got caught out big time, But i do use ebay ALOT for other things.
Liked it for the Scotty Kilmer dig. You win.
go ahead and keep roasting scotty kilmer every video you make and I don't think a single one of us would mind.
The comments would be so alight with burns, the channel would be in breach of some policy or other
Q: Did Scotty work for Toyota? lol
Or more likely Sears for forty years; Oil/filter changes, tires, batteries, wiper blades, and perhaps brakes and mufflers. Scotty wrote the book!
@Bobby Brady you sound like you're a real hoot at parties.
@Bobby Brady go have some pork chops and applesauce and shut up please.
cool story
Quick and easy diagnoses. Why they put fuel pumps in the tank is beyond me, but at least you can access it without dropping the tank. Because when the pump fails you have a full tank and huh hun, thats right you have to drain the tank and ain't no easy way to do that!!!! LOL!!!! Nice video Eric.....
“Too expensive” - *calls tow truck to move vehicle and still has to buy part* hmm I wonder what’s more expensive in the end
AAA?
MrEeeaddict while admittedly I don’t have a ton of experience getting my car towed, I’m fairly certain that you have to have one of the higher tiers of membership (and seeing as how cheap the guy is my assumption is that he doesn’t). Plus I’m not sure that they would cover someone moving their car from a professional shop to a backyard, especially considering that said shop didn’t already try and fail at fixing the problem.
@@adampoconnor He could just use his friends membership. In Canada CAA tows 5x 300KM for like $60 a year.
This is how people in Canada often do a safety inspection
He mentioned ePay. Quality part for sure...
The wired on engine cover and butt connected coils were the signs of a real quality minded customer. Never have money to do it right but always money to do it over.
Is his buddy named Jerry Rigg? Cause it sure looks like he's been working on that before. LOL....hacks.
Now, that's funny.
Been there, done that!!! Had a customer "STRONGLY request" an aftermarket install of an el cheapo fuel pump they brought with them on a '93 Camry. Yup, I was back under that seat in 2 months replacing it. TWICE!!! Having to replace the cheap part 3X ended up costing them a little over twice what an OEM pump would have cost on the initial install. DO NOT SKIMP ON SKETCHY PARTS!!!
I soooooo wish I could find the comments that got SMA banned from Scotty's channel....
I thought it was just the UK where you have to deal with customers like that lol
Woah....thanks mate.......experiences kicked in.....Hannah is learning.....better learn Hannah while good teacher in front of you....tidying, house keeping, familiar with tools, parts, part number....telling him to put on mask while brushing, grinding, sanding....thanks
