Many years ago, a friend worked for a motorcycle/small engine repair shop, and the owner wanted to get out. He sold the business to my friend, with a waning: "You will quickly discover that some customers are just not worth having." And oh, how right he was! I could tell a bunch of stories about "Buddy". My buddy tried to fix it... My buddy said I should do this... My buddy said not to spend money on that... My friend always wondered who and where this mysterious Buddy was, so he could send Christmas cards!
Another excellent vid, Dr. O. E-bay parts make sense if you are doing your own work. The labor involved make the cheap parts not so cheap.. Slick you can access the pump without dropping the tank.
Just replaced a fuel pump on a 2003 GMC suburban and had to drop the whole gas tank with about 6\7 gallons still inside Oh lawd I tells yah, Made me want to turn fresh water into salt water hahahahaha 2am here in LA only Eric and booze keep me up AMEN.
For the sake of clarity, I think I have this right...Car broke down..towed to MSA...diagnosed as bad pump...towed FROM MSA for owner to repair...New but faulty pump installed...towed Back to MSA thinking (understandably) mis-diagnosis...owner then expecting to be reimbursed for a diagnoses AND tow. Turns out to be a faulty, new pump ! Hard feelings all around and time needed to "come to grips" with everything. Such is real life. You live...You learn ! Kudos to Eric O. for posting. And from what I see, he would have posted even IF his diagnosis was wrong. 👍
Must own stock in the tow company. I just did same one a few months ago guy didn’t want to pay 150 for oem so I paid 23.00 and got just the motor not the whole assembly. It’s in and on the road zero issues. Love your customers by the way.
🤣 there’s a lesson or two in there......a) if it’s already at the garage let them do it, b) don’t buy chinesium crud - imagine the walk of shame when he comes to collect it.
OK...by the time everything was said and done, I ended up spending about $500 to save $75. Why yes...I do work for the federal govt., why do you ask???
Eric O: I completely understand where you're coming from. Just did the same job on a BMW a couple day's ago. Seeing that it's an aftermarket pump supply by the customer, I'm wondering just how long it'll last. I too hate aftermarket junk especially electronic/electrical parts. I always recommend OEM parts especially when dealing with imported vehicles. God bless you and your family, have a gr8 day.
Hey! Don’t berate this guy, he helps keep our economy going. Experience is a grand teacher.... eighty percent of our young people don’t know how to jump start a car, much less do anything else.
Hey Y'all Just a little heads up on that sending unit and the hose. That house is a part of the fuel filter. There are 2. One that's the little sock and the second one is almost the whole sending unit. Once you order the main fuel filter (not the sock) you'll get the hose attached to the top with the fuel pump housing, which consequently is the main fuel filter. I also have a hunch that the reason why it was making 6 lb of fuel pressure was in fact the clogged main fuel filter. The one from the junk yard was still good. Anyways just a hunch. But that buddy garage mechanic sure botched things up. Love your vids btw.
A large majority of the fuel pumps being sold right now are knock off name brand Ac Delco, Motorcraft, and Walbro fuel pumps in what appears to be genuine name brand boxes. The issue is bigger than most people even realize. At this point it's best to buy any replacement fuel pump as close to the manufacturer as possible and avoid middle men like Amazon and Ebay no matter what they claim.
I find the level of hind sight 20/20 comments in here to be disturbing. Going aftermarket route is risky business especially since it is nearly impossible to hold these companies accountable for their crap parts. However, I've been in the position of not able to drop $400+ into a 12 year old car (superior Toyota quality or not) only to have to get rid of it 6 months later. In this case, the guy looks (and probably feels) like a fool. He doesn't need us to point it out to him in the comment section.
If you're buying a fuel pump on Ebay to repair a car you've hit rock bottom. Especially in the U.S. You've massive car parts stores all over, & they carry all kinds of everything. If he looked at RUclips for an hour and bought a pump from somewhere sensible, he could have saved the money. The buddy who put it in for him, should have been able to tell (accurately guess) it needed a pump.
A Physics Professor well in this case an OEM or OE equal pump off rock auto was the cost of 2 of his tow bills. A quality pump if he purchased himself isn’t that expensive for this vehicle. Gotta use common sense on eBay a 25$ fuel pump doesn’t even sound right.... a fuel pump is not something you cheap out on.
Well this is part of the learning experience. Sometimes you want to save a buck and take a gamble. Could be based on past gambles that were successful, for example maybe the customer and his friend replaced all the coil over plug connections and got the car started with some spray. Then they ran into the fuel pump problem and a dead end with their abilities. With an honest mechanics help they got a firm diagnosis and figured they could repair themselves. Not really a mistake because it is a simple exchange, except they bought and installed a crap part. Now they've learned a bit more and education isn't free. Learning from Eric at SMA.. Couldn't think of a better teacher to invest with for auto repair. I hope the owner becomes or is a subscriber of SMA.
I have yet to use an Airtex on a customer vehicle...but I have tried them out on my own vehicles where the fuel pump is easily changed (3 different vehicles so far). As of today, I haven't had any issues. Still quite leery about using 'unknowns' like Airtex on customer rigs, though.
Been there with a mopar pump in a 92 Dodge pickup replaced fuel pump 6 times with auto part store pumps.. I could do it in my sleep 40$ pumps just don’t cut it to Dodge dealer I went 389$ later bam 💥 never had it out again... what they don’t tell you is those after market pumps are Guaranteed for life but there not paying you to change it great video I love your stuff
Diagnostics $100/hr. Diagnosing the same vehicle for the same problem the 2nd time $200/hr, installing used fuel pump with I told you so $300+200 2nd diagnostic fee LOL.
I knew that would happen! Now the car will be back in less than 6 months for a dead pump or Evap problem. Maybe he wants the brakes replaced with his ebay parts AND an S.M.A. Video of the brake job! Nice Work Mr. O! !
Being on the YT is a good thing - the customer can go watch the vids and see for themselves... I just ordered timing belt parts for my daughter's Aveo. I got the good Daewoo Korean OEM stuff, not the cheap Chinesium parts. Never thought I'd see the day I'd be actually looking for Japanese and Korean parts for anything...
I bought an e bay fuel pump. Lucky I put it on right the 1st time. And it's still running after a year and only cost me $40 👍👍👍👍👍👍 I get the customers scepticism I been burned and over charged by many POS mechanics so what did I do go on yt and watch mr. O's videos and do it myself. Like Scotty kilmer says to fix it right sometimes you just gotta do it yourself is that not what Eric O always tells us at the ending of all his videos.
I have a 2002 Camry. After hearing about how expensive a fuel pump is, from the video and the comments, I checked online. It's $100 for a Denso pump from autohausaz. This is expensive?
this is a good example of why I try my best to find AC Delco parts for my Chevy g20. It cost more but they are more dependablr. Also I try to get all my parts from a local parts store so I can easily return stuff and they have good warranties!!
I’d say most backyard mechanic makes the “cheap parts mistake” once, mine was a heater core that required the entire dash removal..lasted about 6 months - I just got lucky somebody totaled the truck on month 7 and saved me the hassle of fixing my mistake. Can’t blame the guy for wanting to DIY with a fuel pump this simple..his choice in parts was the mistake!
rickey gresham I’m sure many are good . As a diy mechanic I would use it on my own car . If it’s half the price and I do it twice it’s my time not a shops time. But if I can’t do the job and have to pay someone else I’ll get oem it reputable aftermarket . Then again I put a good pump in Durango dropping a 20 gallon tank when it’s not empty is a Bitch .
The cheap Chinese fuel pump made in Taiwan was in fact cheap junk LOL. I mean some times you can get stuff aftermarket and it works great but I'm going to bet the customer found the cheapest fuel pump they could possibly find that said "New" on Ebay and bought it, and turned out it was one that was garbage to begin with and was damaged by the previous person trying to "fix it".
Reminds me of my ex. "Penny wise, pound foolish". She once took 20 minutes to choose a can of beans based on ingredients, weight, price and god knows what else. A good lesson nonetheless.
Must be frustrating as thunder, watching a customer spend money on a cheaper solution, and end up paying way over what he should have paid in the first place. It happened to me a few times but I learned if ole Tim recommends an OEM part, then get it!! I don’t monkey around with aftermarket, unless it’s non-critical, like a cup holder, cause aftermarket doesn’t know what a specification is, much less meet the minimum required. I have basically learned that lesson. Well, I try to use Dorman for my cup holders as much as possible. 😂😂 Great video and thanks very much for the follow-up. We viewers like to hear the little engine purring like she should when you’re done with it. And, if you can do it, I can do it.... except it takes me a LOT longer. 😳😁
I was burned twice on an ACDelco Water Pump. Proudly made in China. Lasted 8 months. Got a new one under warranty. It lasted 5 months. Bought a NOS OEM Water Pump made in the UK. Never another problem. It was for a 3 0 liter Vauxhall Engine used in 3.0 Saturn's, Catera's, and SAAB 9-5 with 3.0 V6 option. My application was SAAB.
I sure hope you're getting CASH for this job... You knew that the guy was squeaky cheap when he used copper wire to hold down plastic cover over the coils.. LMBO 😀

I have saved a lot of money; yes, it was not always easy work to do, but I do have fun learning and doing it at the same time. Sincerely Eric O, thank you very much:)
Many years ago, a friend worked for a motorcycle/small engine repair shop, and the owner wanted to get out. He sold the business to my friend, with a waning: "You will quickly discover that some customers are just not worth having."
And oh, how right he was! I could tell a bunch of stories about "Buddy". My buddy tried to fix it... My buddy said I should do this... My buddy said not to spend money on that...
My friend always wondered who and where this mysterious Buddy was, so he could send Christmas cards!
400 bucks for a header, Ebay fuel pump cheap, Eric O fix= Priceless! GO OEM!! I see another tow in the near future when that one goes belly up!
I've had alot of Airtex pumps failing too. Less than a year in a new part is unacceptable
Airtex fuel pumps are brand new junk. I have the same experience with them, failures in 3 to 4 months
I runaway from airtex fuel pumps. They are are joke
Try using ratchet straps to lower the tank & left it next time i do it all the time!
Steven Ayala ... "left"???
😉😉 I foresaw this! Lol. Good video Eric! Getting these videos out there, IDK how you do it all! Have an awesome day! 😊🤗
Yes I was about to comment the same thing lol buy cheap and it will comeback!
The only honest mechanic in New York State.
OK...by the time everything was said and done, I ended up spending about $500 to save $75.
Why yes...I do work for the federal govt., why do you ask???
Yet another example where the stingy man pays the most!
Hopefully he learned his lesson. Great job Eric. Obviously he brought it back to you because he trusts you and knows your a good mechanic.
My old man always told me growing up do it right the first time and I learned to live by that
I'd put a special warranty on customer provided/requested Chinesium parts... 30 seconds or 3 feet. Whichever comes first!
Mine is "Line of sight" as I turn around to explain it to them..
Tail light warranty
grobarization so good
I can't warranty customer provided parts.
That's generous? You have more faith in them than I do!
Hey! Don’t berate this guy, he helps keep our economy going. Experience is a grand teacher.... eighty percent of our young people don’t know how to jump start a car, much less do anything else.
Lol I pay up now because of you and those cheapo dollar tree special parts. =)
Hey Y'all
Just a little heads up on that sending unit and the hose.
No Brake cleaner needed :)
I wouldn't of been able to hide my smile when he came to pick up the vehicle!
TrakSpock1 Excellent point. The Chinese are knocking off Apple iPhones, so this comes as no surprise.

I am glad you made this video as customer should have listened to you in the beginning! Thanks
Aftermarket was better before the Chinese started crapflooding it.
Eric, I still like this customer of yours just because we get to watch another video of yours 🤩🤩
Who all saw the eBay pump was gonna be junk? 🙋♂️
If there's anything I've seen that's worse than Dorman, it's no-name eBay parts.
eBay is good place to get parts BUT you need to know to not buy the cheapest made in china - no-name parts. Many reliable merchants also sell on Ebay
I thought his buddy was a mechanic and he could fix it. I guess not. He should've learned to just keep it at your shop and get it fixed correctly
I always use Airtex pumps! Never had a problem!
I have yet to use an Airtex on a customer vehicle...but I have tried them out on my own vehicles where the fuel pump is easily changed (3 different vehicles so far). As of today, I haven't had any issues. Still quite leery about using 'unknowns' like Airtex on customer rigs, though.
@@AKJeeper Closed up shop n retired in 2011, don't know if Airtex is made in China now??? Always had a great warranty too!
Pitty customer....hey I was like that too.....suppose to save money but end up spend more....those are the days....
SMA common sense striking again! Well, some people only learn the hard way. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah but not necessarily the hard way all the time. We all make mistakes at some point. Just hope the owner learned something in this case.
@@danielsimpson8929 Yep! This is true as well.
Your customer reminds me of my mother. She'll spend a dollar to save a dime.
Smartest SMA customer of the year award Congrats !
As a automotive technician for 30 + years
( New ) = never ever worked)
Been there with a mopar pump in a 92 Dodge pickup replaced fuel pump 6 times with auto part store pumps.. I could do it in my sleep 40$ pumps just don’t cut it to Dodge dealer I went 389$ later bam 💥 never had it out again... what they don’t tell you is those after market pumps are Guaranteed for life but there not paying you to change it great video I love your stuff
Also sounds like you'll get an exhaust repair out of him. LOL
Probably two the way things are going.
Woody M
No he will solder soda cans together to make the exhaust pipes. Or maybe duct tape? It does look metal...
It’s a ricer it’s supposed to be like that.
Not as long as Pringle cans are a buck a piece at Dollar Tree
I'm sure he has a buddy with some coat hangers that can fix the exhaust with some gutter material.
That was Nice. I'm not looking forward to fix being fuel pump, but you made it seem quite easy. - after tests. Thanks.
How about giving us some dollar amounts occasionally? I like to know what things cost.
Some people never learn. 🤥
The poor man probably has money problems, is stressed out, and can't think straight !!!
Like Scotty kilmer says to fix it right sometimes you just gotta do it yourself is that not what Eric O always tells us at the ending of all his videos.
cheap chinese/ebay fuel pump..(nelson muntz voice) HA ha
The neatest and tidiest mechanic on you tube!👨🔧👨🔧👨🔧
I have a 2002 Camry. After hearing about how expensive a fuel pump is, from the video and the comments, I checked online. It's $100 for a Denso pump from autohausaz. This is expensive?
But hey the guy saved $80 bucks for the junkyarfd one .Oh wait .......
I don't consider $100 expensive for a pump made by an OEM such as Denso. Pretty good deal, really.
this is a good example of why I try my best to find AC Delco parts for my Chevy g20. It cost more but they are more dependablr. Also I try to get all my parts from a local parts store so I can easily return stuff and they have good warranties!!
Good idea :)
Customer should watch your video part 1 before accusing you of misdiagnosing.
Maybe it wasn't published yet.
I’d say most backyard mechanic makes the “cheap parts mistake” once, mine was a heater core that required the entire dash removal..lasted about 6 months - I just got lucky somebody totaled the truck on month 7 and saved me the hassle of fixing my mistake.
Can’t blame the guy for wanting to DIY with a fuel pump this simple..his choice in parts was the mistake!
just to be fair i have installed Ebay fuel pumps with no come backs.
rickey gresham I’m sure many are good .
Some may be ok but I would not put my reputation on the line for one.
Yeah but you probably have a good idea of who you're dealing with on Ebay. This guy is taking a shot in the dark to a large degree.
Good luck to the customer on sending that pump back...lol....you get what you pay for...great call Dr Eric
And the moral of the story is.....
The curse of the crappy parts. Nice job!
Reminds me of my ex. "Penny wise, pound foolish". She once took 20 minutes to choose a can of beans based on ingredients, weight, price and god knows what else. A good lesson nonetheless.
Ok 20 is too long but quickly looking ONE time and then knowing for next time is ok....still 20min... Wtf?
@@SteedDigital1 To my mind, it was a power thing, She loved shopping and the beans were just an excuse.
Reminds me of my mother after living in remote Canadian town 25 years, and going to her first chain grocery store back here in the USA.
Great video and thanks very much for the follow-up. We viewers like to hear the little engine purring like she should when you’re done with it. And, if you can do it, I can do it.... except it takes me a LOT longer. 😳😁
Exactly why you don't get parts off of Ebay unless their OEM parts sold on Ebay!
I'd still be concerned that the parts are counterfeit. Buy OEM from the dealership.
Unfortunately, even the so-called "OEM" parts on Ebay and Amazon are fake these days.
MTTech They're*
@@TrakSpock1 that is pretty much the same as my comment about parts from other than the dealership being counterfeit. 😎
LMBO 😀
My guess someone lost the nut so wire was used to hold it down the cover on the engine instead of finding another nut to fit.
@@johnhpalmer6098 From the looks of it the whole stud was unscrewed from the head. I wouldnt taken the other stud out, went to the hardware store and bought threaded rod to replace it
@@joshdupont2209 To be honest, that's NOT Eric's job to fix/replace missing parts. Yes, that is what the owner should have done instead himself instead.
@@johnhpalmer6098 no it's not Eric's job to fix that. Just my opinion on what I would've done being the owner of that car. Guess I should've been more specific
I learned to use OEM fuel pumps real quick after my first and only foray with Airtex.
I agree on the Airtex fuel pumps. Horrible brand in fuel pumps....I give them maybe 3 to 5 months and they fail.
