    Thanks for a no non-sense review. I had a QX50 loaner while my G37S was in for some maintenance, and I left with the same surprised feeling. Within the first pull getting on the freeway leaving the dealership, I immediately came to the conclusion that people were making a bigger deal than it really is. I'm not saying I'm going out to buy a CVT, and I would still highly recommend that Infiniti swap in the 9-spd auto... but the CVT is PERFECTLY fine for the people that will drive these things. Not every car is designed to be a performance machine. This is not, but it does surprise you when you toss it in a corner. Despite its plush ride it stays relatively flat in corners. And the VC-Turbo is very torquey and smooth. Also people rag on the interior because of the dual screens, but it is actually very nice and has great materials... even on the base models, just about everything is wrapped in leather. Also most people that complain haven't actually been in one of these and you can't really get a sense of the depth and dimensions of its design and the layers in pictures and video. Also, I totally agree with Kirk on adding AA/CarPlay to the top screen really changed the game for their dual screen setup. It's actually pretty functional now, and is ideal. And YES the top screen is a matte finish, but they updated it's resolution and it was very sharp in the loaner I had. The price is a bit much, but in normal times you won't be paying that much.
    As far as Infiniti overall, the QX60 is a good showing. Starting to see them on the streets and they look good. I think their real statement of who they will be is going to be the new QX80. I heard somewhere that they're aiming to wow with it... I hope they do. As much as I'm rooting for the brand they can't take anymore hits to their rep. C'mon Infiniti.

    Excellent review. I think you nailed the benefits of the items most reviewers complain about. That being the dual screens and the CVT. I’ve had a vehicle with the large single screen and it took me all of 10 minutes in my Q60s to appreciate the dual screen setup. And as far as the CVT in the QX55 I purchased a couple of weeks ago (essential trim in red) it’s punchy and always has power where I need it. Taking a road trip this weekend in it and looking very forward to it because it’s such a comfortable and quiet place to spend time. I am loving this vehicle. People need to drive it before criticizing it.

They need to ditch that tranny ASAP and lower the price to be competitive. They have no brand equity to stand on.

    It’s going to be difficult buying something like this after learning the company’s CVT transmission woes of the past.
    Meanwhile, driving the eCVT from the Toyota/Lexus hybrids is a blast, after learning that it’s more reliable than the manual transmission, with instant response in Sport mode and using B mode without fear of breaking anything.

    @DJG37S 2 года назад +15

    The CVT is 100% the achilles heel of the QX55 or any brand that has over 200 BHP or 200 tq. The amount of people whop bring in their Nissan/Infiniti into shops because of CVT issues is like nearly several thousands a year.
    The reason why the CVT is bad for high HP and torque is because the amount of stress it puts on the chain. There is a reason why the QX60 went with the 9 speed auto this year. The QX60 transmission (CVT) is one of the worst transmission ever built on this planet. There have been customers who bought in a 40,000 mile QX60 where the CVT transmission just went out.
    Now cars with low horse power like economy cars (civic, corolla, yaris, etc..) is fine with a CVT because it doesn't deliever too much HP/tq to the transmission so it makes sense to have CVT in those cars, but for cars and SUVs that have 200+ HP this is a great way to kill a CVT transmission.

  • @damieg82

    2:37 I beg to differ that the simulated gears are a waste of time. Some of Honda's CVTs with manual modes are configured the same way, and once you assess the logic behind them, they're actually very decent. Other automatics (not only CVTs but geared automatics too) will override your manually selected gear based on your throttle input, and downshift by itself. On the other end of the spectrum, they automatically upshift once you've reached redline, although you have not manually selected the next gear. The sportiest geared automatics do not do this, ie once you've manually selected a particular gear, that's it! It will not downshift if you floor the pedal, and it will not upshift when it reaches redline, but rather it'll leave the engine to endlessly bounce off of the rev limiter. Porsche for example, and even some Mazdas, are this way. So at least for the downshift aspect, it's clear that Infiniti tuned the CVT to behave like a very sporty automatic.. so once you're in manual mode, you must downshift yourself, otherwise the engine will lumber on while the revs slowly build for the 'gear' you're in. Having driven quite a few cars with manual mode CVTs which are programmed in this sporty way, I rather like it because it gives more of a believable manual feeling (after all, with a real manual gearbox, there's no auto downshifting whatsoever). When the transmission takes over and downshifts or upshifts while I have it in manual mode, CVT or not it is a very underwhelming experience and you feel like you're not actually in control of what the car does.

    I haven't liked Acura designs for many years. But this is a breakthrough exterior design for me. The interior is classy. By adding horsepower and racy handling you inevitably add some harshness. That that may be a great tradeoff for the driver and enthusiast, but not terribly enjoyable for most passengers. In the luxury with reliability class, it's still Lexus for style, comfort and reliability...with a proper level of performance for me. Acuras (first cars I sold) are just a small step below Lexus.
    Therefore, Lexus would probably be my first look, but you can bet there will be a long test drive in this Acura.

    Never will buy Nissan CVT....this thing will sell, even Nissan puts back in the old 7 speed auto and re-tune it. CVT is just a giant experiment deem to fail. Even Mazda uses 6 speed auto with comparable fuel economy as those stupid faulty CVTs...with fuel prices are so high, the purpose of CVT is not there anymore. the QX need to update the software, it's old. Nissan can contract out all the transmission work to ZF, or just use the reliable Lexus 8 Speed. Nissan can also contract out the software side if they have difficulties. I personally dont think Infiniti will exist any longer...

    2 things
    1. you can't take off in the wrong gear in manual mode and expect it to be quick all the time. You as the driver that has control need to actually put it in the right gear for acceleration. You were in about 4th gear when you should've been in 3rd but thats your fault m it locked into a ratio that you selected.
    2. On the bose audio system sometimes in my altima when the GPS talked and lowered the music sometimes the volume doesn't go back to where it's supposed to be after the GPS stopped talking. Thats happened to me before so that's probably the problem.
