This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new Infiniti QX55 SUV. This compact crossover is what Infiniti calls a coupe, taking the existing QX50 and making a sportier looking design. Even though this new QX55 compact luxury utility has a sportier look, it still offers a lot of headroom, legroom and cargo capacity. This new QX55 SUV has a 2L turbo-charged 4 cylinder engine matched with a CVT and standard AWD with 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The only main competitor with more horsepower goes to the RDX with 272, but same amount of torque. QX55 design is inspired by the Infiniti FX model, which launched in 2003. This QX55 Shares the same platform, interior, powertrain and suspension with the QX50 SUV. Infiniti did not take the opportunity to update the transmission from a CVT to a conventional automatic or the in-dash infotainment system that looks rather dated compared to the current batch of premium compact SUVs. The main competitors to this new QX55 coupe SUV are the Mercedes GLC Coupe, BMW X4 and the Range Rover Evoque.

    • @nolij7765

Especially once it came out as unreliable. They should've gone back to a traditional auto and then tried reintroducing the CVT in a model after working the kinks out to get people to trust their CVTs again. It doesn't really matter to most people if their current CVTs are better than their old unreliable ones. People associate Nissan CVTs with junk. They needed to make a clean break from their terrible CVT.

Love to see you guys again. Beautiful spring dress Andrea....Lucky man Zack....A few tears ago I was invited to the North American premiere of the NEW QX50 during the annual January Montreal International Car show by Infiniti Canada and my dealer Spinelli in the West Island. Those of you who know me on FB are familiar with my modified Red 2012 Infiniti G37xS Coupe...Anyway, I was impressed but I was also sad to see that this vehicle had IMHO 4 major issues: 1. The biggest, the CVT transmission...it seems almost like Nissan and Infiniti are trying to prevent the boat from sinking while they're clinging on to their life vests! 2. No power folding external mirrors...If you park in a downtown parking lot or on the street you know what I'm talking about. 3. Price or should I say out of the dealer invoice....It's high compared to the competition. 4. Carry over from the Q50/60 crappy infotainment system; it's laggy, slow, and sometimes it stalls. I'm not sure Infiniti besides the looks of this SUV improved much on the new QX55...So far I'm not seeing anything new other than the new rear. I do however like the new Nissan Pathfinder....a lot. I think that you could add the BMW X2 too. Sorry Infiniti, I'm keeping my 2018 BMW X1....

Wow! I love it. I love the look of the rear end and it would sell me on this like it did on both of our 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse SEL Touring’s with S-AWC. Oh and that front grill and front end looks amazing. I love these coupe type CUV-SUV styled vehicles. I also like dual screens even though some say it does seem a lil old school its what I like and I really like it here. I like the 2 screens vs 1 large one as it makes the dash and console styling so neat. As far as the CVT goes after owning CVT’s in all 5 of our Mitsubishi’s I could never go back to a regular automatic, dual clutch automatic or manual. A CVT is so smooth for everyday driving and works so much better on the interstate and climbing mountains and hills. I have owned 2 manuals, 6 regular automatics, and 5 CVT’s and I will take a CVT any day over the others and that is just my preference as it gives me what I am looking for in a vehicle. I like this red but with the red and black and interior. Wow!

It has handling and performance that rivals cars of today. Mine is the last gen of FX45...and was a 1 owner trade in with low miles for its age...its in fantastic condition.
I like the QX55 but also think this is a bridge model. I think CVTs are getting better and fuel efficiency is more important than it was just days ago. Infiniti will sort out where that drive train goes...but I dont think it will be ..away. Thanks for your review.

Great styling on this SUV both inside and out. Infiniti has always done the ride/handling combo very well which is why it's beyond me they used a CVT especially when great off the shelf 8, 9 and 10 speed units are available. The new 10 speed in the Honda/Acura vehicle lineup is brilliant. CVTs have their place in basic sub-compact or compact vehicles like the Nissan Kicks, Qashqai, Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Venue but not in something trying to be premium.

What I like about this car is that it does not have a German engine. They are highly unreliable and I want a luxury SUV without the maintenance cost and issues of German cars. I am not a huge fan of the CVT but it’s not a deal breaker for me bc the exterior styling is EXCELLENT and the interior feels luxurious enough which is what I am wanting in a luxury crossover. I do agree that they should have went with an automatic transmission. I like the feeling in the steering wheel when it’s automatic transmission. Also, I have been waiting for SO LONG for a SEXY and aggressive-looking car that doesn’t look like a soccer mom car and isn’t German and is in my budget. The RDX and NX don’t do it for me personally. Very nice looking but just not what I have been waiting for. The Genesis GV70 is also on my radar. The QX55 definitely is on my list now for next vehicle purchase 😆

The problem is not just a CVT, it’s THE CVT. That particular CVT is really really bad and in some cars it just kept on breaking down again and again. Reliability is virtually nonexistent.
And also this car shares the FWD platform with the MB GLA/GLB class. Not really up to the competition as many others in this price range has a longitudinal engine setup on a RWD/AWD platform.

I said this in another channel and I'll say it again about Infinity because I hope they're listening...I try never to say anything negative on the internet but I do sometimes feel like Infinity is deliberately trying to go out of business with design and budgeting decisions?! The upper instrument panel and dash in that 2022 Qx55 look identical to what was around in the year 2000....when I graduated high school. That dual screen setup wouldn't have even been cool back in 2000 especially considering they look like they're from completely different suppliers, it's even worse when you see it in person. Is it just me? Also why does it have to have "Infinity"spelled out, a foot and a half long across the back hatch in addition to a giant Infinity badge right below the exposed rear windshield wiper which clearly should have been engineered underneath the spoiler?!
The motor and CVT sound like a vacuum cleaner with a fluctuating current.
This car is expensive and would take a lot of someone's hard-earned money especially as shown at nearly 60k!?! I highly recommend anyone look at the competition.

INFINITI can’t put anything other than the CVT with their variable compression engine. They have stated that before. The VC engine is always and will always be paired with a CVT. If they get rid of the CVT then they would also have to ditch the VC engine and they just aren’t ready to do that yet.

Don’t understand all the cvt bashing. It is not a performance car. It is a luxury car that is made to cruise down the road smooth and quiet. Now as far as the tech goes I agree that it is dated. But it does the job at a good price. Infinity absolutely nailed the exterior styling

Great review. Just want to say that I am pretty sure you can"t use ZF 8 speed since it is for longitudinal engine layouts. The QX60 is getting the ZF 9 speed which hasn't had great reviews in Acura, FCA, and Land Rover products. That one is for transverse layouts.

Nice review! Thanks! I lost interest in Nissan/ Infiniti when they stopped competing. The first and second generations of the G were very competitive. Then things went downhill from there. By the way, the FX ages horribly, at least the interior. I have seen a few in which the material on the dashboard bubbles up.

  • @DonFather

Yeah, I love this design, but hate CVTs, but I can understand coz changing anything requires lots of invested capital. They probably figured they could save that capital and keep the price lower in hopes to sell people on design and a much lower price than Europeans who are experts at charging you more for shaving off a part of the rear end.

As impressive as this is. Zack’s use of the word ‘Premium’ is appropriate. I don’t consider cars at less than $50,000 CAN ($60 for SUVs) to be classified as ‘Luxury’ cars. A Brand should not, by default, receive a luxury status throughout it’s lineup. The 3-series, C-class, A4’s and ES’s ... are certainly upscale/premium; but faux leather, heated/cooled seats, HUDs and a German (Japanese) Premium badges are just ‘not quite’ Luxury vehicles. They are simply .... achievable, disposable and generic. True Luxury feels special (like my past 7-series) every time you look at it , drive it or arrive. I like all Brands; but the Badge alone shouldn’t dictate a luxury status - unless your Badge says Rolls Royce, Aston Martin or Bentley. Despite these points; I do very much like this new Infiniti, quite a lot, for an upscale premium model. Great review. Sorry for the rant. Thanks for the video.

Nissan is really missing the mark and they have the engines to make their cars more exciting and performance oriented. The QX55 can easily be offered with the QX60 powertrain for a Red Sport 300 model. In that smaller SUV it'd at least make 300+ Hp. They also should do a sport version of the QX60 as well with the Q60 Red Sports turbo V6 💯

I just got out of a car with a CVT (CH-R) and into one with a regular automatic (Mazda 3). And though I love my Mazda, I kind of like the CVT better in highway driving. The transmission in the CH-R would kick down quickly, and I think holding the ratios without upshifting feels better for acceleration. I think CVT’s get a bad rap because typically they’re paired with economy engines. Give them more power and tune them right, and I think they’re fine.
