The HARSH TRUTH About Men & Society I’d Tell You If You Were My Sister

  • My dear girls
What happened in Kolkata was horrifying. And the even sadder part is that countless similar acts go unnoticed simply because it was not talked about on the internet or the media didn’t find it hype-worthy. If the media starts focusing on this one topic, it would have to report a case every single minute. Because these monsters are everywhere and such cases are not restricted to just Kolkata. It has started spreading to even the closed homes in the most rural parts of India.
In fact, this issue has become so ingrained in our society that a lot of the time, men’s action are justified even by women - their mothers, grand mothers and this whole argument gets lost in the sea of patriarchal narrative.
Ultimately, we let the core issue slide.
With this video, I just want to make you aware of the things that are in your control, because a lot of things are not, and how you can be part of the change. These are genuinely things I’ve told my sisters and I want you all to know because every girl in this community is like my sister too and being an elder sister, I genuinely feel you need to know this.

What can I do as a man to make a change at an individual level, most of the solutions I find said by today's feminists are not practical to follow(like locking men at home so that women can go out, it's not sensible)

Hey, wonderful question. Here are a few you can start with:
      1. Speak up whenever you see anything like this in action - whether it's a small thing like a sexist joke or a big thing where someone else is making a woman feel uncomfortable.
      2. Educate your peers, men and boys around you about consent - it's simple but a lot of people still don't understand because of lack of education.
      3. When people are sharing their experience/talking about any injustice that happened with them - listen empathetically and validate that experience. Often just validation can help a lot with healing.
      4. If you have female friends, colleagues, sisters, offer to not let them go alone at night if you can - you can offer to accompany/drop them if you have that level of trust with them.
      5. Respecting physical boundaries (especially with strangers/especially at night) is a huge one. A male friend of mine told me this that at night if he's walking about and a woman comes from the other direction, he might switch lanes or just increase the physical distance between them to signal to her that he is trustworthy - it's not a question of "I am not like this" but just an attempt to actively make someone feel safe.
      6. Use your power as a man to create space for women's voices to be heard. This could be something as small as advocating for a coworker or something as big as supporting a woman in her fight for justice.
Hope this helps and again, thanks for asking this question, I'll also make a video on this

And another thing which quite comes under 1 and 2 .As part of my job in public health and various social activities i have visited many schools, colleges across my state. It shook me to core when i saw the disgusting and lewd things written on the walls, counters of almost all mens washroom about thier female teachers and classmates. Shocking thing is none of male faculties who also use the same washroom never thought of doing something about it. Next is the things that boys talk about their close female friends and classmates making lewd and obscene remarks when they are not around. At first i thought it was some kind of sex education thing that we girls talk about in close knitted friend groups, but later realised that its not that. Its a whole different perverted, degrading and sexual slurs about their female classmates. Conversations like that happen so often that is considered normal for many groups to have categorising girls. These young boys literally will grow up sexualizing women and develops perverted sexual interests and you have a group of men validating it.
I hope boys realise that this is not normal. When you see something like that object, educate your peers , stop having these lewd conversations about women.Just respect women as humans.

When I see some chapri or goons standing in group at side of lonely road or street, I change my route. My safety is my priority because from men they can steal or even beat them to death, even if authorities are capable, they cannot recover my health loss. So yes, don't rely on anyone, prioritize your safety first doesn't matter if you are man and woman. Devil is everywhere, its really a sick world we are living in today.

As a fellow woman, I want to add some points to this excellent video:
The aim of patriarchy is to make women(and men) live in a constant state of dissatisfaction and frustration, because the goalpost of what it means to be an ideal woman(and man), keeps on changing according to made-up narratives. Now that I've said this:
The following is just for women. Our systemic oppression is not sexual assault or domestic violence. We are stamped as inferior from the day we are born. There is subtle to not-so-subtle disappointment in the family when the firstborn is a daughter, and there is sadness when the secondborn is also a daughter. The constant push by elders to make ourselves more soft, polite, calm, compliant, and obedient(this is also for little boys), for years, makes us end up like we have no sense of who we are and what we want.
Do this after marriage, do that after you get a job, and again, attempt to make us smaller and take up as little space as we can. This constant tolerance results in us being a doormat to the point of tolerating verbal, mental, and emotional abuse, sexual assault being an extreme case scenario that depends on a lot of factors.
To break this cycle of being a martyr/doormat, we must do one thing. We have to make women turn into biological beings, from sexual ones. What do I mean by this? Have you seen the women you see on TV, ads, music videos, movies, social media? They are almost nonhuman looking. Photoshopped skin, edited features, no pores, no signs of aging. Almost like we are objects of the male gaze. Yet men are lauded when they age, "silver fox", an empowering term given to them. The age-old patriarchy reduces women to their uterus and vagina and makes them worthless after a certain age. And it's so entrenched in women too, that even women themselves make fun of and mock women older than them, calling them derogatory names.
We break the cycle by becoming shameless and converting ourselves into the true biological beings that we are. Our bodies are not sexual objects. We have to openly talk about periods, IBS, diarrhea, pregnancy, childbirth, breast/ovarian/uterine issues, which are biological parts of us, and talk about things that are "taboo and hush hush". We have to start posting unfiltered photos on social media. We have to overestimate ourselves. We have to talk about sex because all the hush-hush has made us a land of high population and sexual assault, so might as well start talking. And we have to start now.
The more we get rid of shame about ourselves, and shame the perpetrators and creeps from the get-go, the faster we can evolve. If a child is being groped in a public bus/auto, she must shamelessly shout, hey look that pervert uncle is touching my boob/butt/crotch, eww what a molester/balatkari uncle chhiiii. The victim should never be ashamed, the pervert/abuser should be shamed in every way possible.
At first, after years of being soft, it'll be tough. But start practicing slowly. If possible, go to therapy, it's an excellent place to unlearn a lot of low confidence.

Great advice dear, I have seen girls targeted in public transport and I’ve raised voice for as much girls as I could because the girls were too afraid to speak for themselves. Because I too have faced these things when I was a school girl. The irony is when you raise the voice not even women are bothering to support you. Because they are afraid of the weird comments that men will make. I’m not generalising here. Yes, there are many women like Adete and there are women who remain silent. At least women should support a fellow woman or a girl in such a situation because the victim can be too shocked or afraid to respond . This is my request to all ladies. SAFETY IS AN ILLUSION .
As a woman we will never be truly safe everytime.
My underrated advice would be to ( from a solo girl experience)
    1. FLIGHT IS SAFER THAN FIGHT. ALWAYS. If you can avoid please avoid and walk away or run. They want your attention, negative or positive if you respond they will get a reason to jump you.(Based on personal experience if you avoid them completely, and walk away they will loose interest and increase your pace, change routes etc)Your life is more important than the embarassed of running away.
    1. LEARN TO IDENTIFY EARLY SIGNS OF HARM, there is always something( eg- stalking? Touched you?staring at you too much? Gave you a threat? Showed you there private part in public?asked to sleep with them? Etc Avoid and Distance yourself! And be wary of them. Don't fight! Flight.
    3. PRACTICE ENDURANCE TRAINING . Practice running 2-3km without breaks.. this will help in case of emergency. They may run faster but they won't run longer like you can if you train.
    4. In early phase of attack when its only talk not physical and not too late.. mention your father/ brother is POLICEMEN politely! We don't want to trigger the aggressor. Be soft. (It happened to me once when i was 8 year old, playing near my school gate while waiting for mom, a man called me , He was in his car. I went there, he showed me his private part and asked my name etc. i nonchalantly told him my name and said my father works in police and he is late today and I'm waiting for him. Then he left. Gone no where to be seen. I told my mother later and she was scared yet proud.)
    5. IF POSSIBLE BE UNPREDICTABLE ABOUT YOUR TIMINGS AND DAILY ROUTES. Don't always use the same walking route(but this can be hard), and change time of your entry and exit sometimes.
    6. GET AWAY FROM THE AGGRESORS RADAR. Run, hide, camouflage if that works. If they keep on following you, even after ignoring and walking away, Make it a mission to distance yourself!
THE COUNTRY WILL NOT BECOME SAFE ANYTIME SOON. THIS COULD TAKE DECADES! IF NOT CENTURIES.
So This comes down to luck. Yes luck! The face of rapist and victim will change but this incident will always happen. So to have luck we have no choice but to become warriers that we truly are. We can overcome this together!
    My mantra
Learn early signs, Avoid, Don't Engage, Run, Be cautious, Distance yourself.
I sincerely pray for everyone's safety and good health!🙏

@@vidhyaanbu9167 You make a valid point that individuals who are at risk of engaging in harmful behavior might not seek out advice, especially if they feel they already know better or dismiss external input. However, addressing this issue isn’t solely about waiting for these individuals to seek help. It’s about creating a broader culture of understanding and respect, where prevention and education are part of everyday conversations.
Even if someone feels they know everything, they are still influenced by the environment around them. By expanding the reach of advice through various channels-community programs, educational initiatives in schools, and collaborations with local organizations-we can work to shift attitudes and behaviors before they escalate to harmful actions. It's about embedding these conversations into places where people who might not be active on social media still interact, such as community centers, workplaces, or educational institutions.
In this way, we're not just relying on social media to solve the problem; we're working to change the broader cultural and social contexts that influence behavior.

As a man, I understand. The frustration of being afraid of All men is normal after seeing how society has mistreated women. As the transformation will not happen overnight, symptoms such as having pepper spray, speaking up, and doing everything to be safe must first be addressed.
However, the root cause of this problem needs to be solved. And there are so many. From a young age, Indian society has normalized following a woman, forcing her to do things out of her will and so much more. Bollywood has only acted as a catalyst for this mindset. Also, I remember that, as a kid, my schoolteachers made sure that we boys didn't talk to girls and the other way around. Most of us men who were part of such schools had a hard time interacting with women, having a friendly connection, and learning to act around the opposite gender later on. The problem starts from childhood and school life itself.
India has a vast human rights issue in the world you can look that up. I have also seen men getting harassed at work and getting their lives ruined by false cases from some women. Honestly, This country needs to work on its citizens' safety urgently, especially women's, and not just plan but implement them to make them safe for everyone, regardless of gender, income, or power. And all of it starts with us!

I would like to add my observation, in some cases women even support the misogynists to demonize the female victims. Maybe you can advise women how to deal with them as well. Because that number seems quite high where some women(specially mother figures) support and encourage misogyny in a family setup. Everything starts at home after-all. I remember, I still remember, I can never forget the haunting experience I felt as a 'Kid' back then.. I was in grade 3 when it all started, to be honest I had zero knowledge about sexual harassment. I used go by van where we were three girls around my age and rest were senior boys who I used to call 'Bhaiya' out of respect. Then there was this boy who was in grade 7, I can never forget his name, my body still gets stiffened when I hear the same name even when it's a different person. I was the last girl to get out of the van with two boys including him who lived two or three lanes away that time. When the last girl was dropped off to her house, the van used to have a lot of space and I always felt so uncomfortable around him like he used to try to sit next to me and when I switched to next seat or shifted a little far away, he used to come even more closer to me. Bringing his nasty hands to my pubic region from the back, it was frightening.. I feel like crying while writing this but I know I have to let it out. I had that school uniform on, even wearing skirts made me feel bad. He always touched or tried to touch me and when once I couldn't hold back, and asked him ' What are you doing Bhaiya?' He replied saying, ' It was an ant creeping inside your skirt' I loathe him and still do but what hurts the most is, the other boys never really tried to help me, because this boy used to shut em up. One was and still is close to my family, it hurts seeing him, I get reminded of everything I felt back as a kid. After two years," that" boy shifted to a different van but I could always see his nasty look creeping me in the school..Finally, after he left our neighborhood and school after two more years, I was relieved. I couldn't explain how I felt relaxed? pathetic of myself? or scared that he might come back? The fact that I didn't tell my family still holds me in guilt. They are still unaware but I hope one day I get the courage to tell them but then I think, what's done is done, what's the use of telling them now? When he left, the other two girls told me how good they felt when he left..they told me another side of the story where it was not only me who was a victim. I'm still in school but I no longer go by a van, I can never.

I cried so much when I heard about this case...cried a lot when I read about nirbhaya, kathua, unnao, hathras, manipur, disha case...and these are just the infamous ones. everyday women are raped and murdered, what happens if she is a lower caste woman with no money? thousands of such cases go unreported. With all this, I still see people against feminism, so many people worried about defending men rather than the woman's life. We know it's not all men but we don't know which men, so we are told to be careful from all men. Yes, even my own father tells me to be careful of men. I have faced harassment since my school days, all of my friends have been through scary incidents, unless we accept that there is something deeply wrong with our society and work together to make it a safe place, nothing will change. The cycle repeats: another brutal case, few days of outrage, then back to mocking women's issues, feminists, and blaming them whenever something like this happens

Don’t know where you have heard from Nordik women that they’re unsafe, i personally know a huge lot of them and have even lived there…none of them complain about feeling unsafe or being assaulted…if at all, they say that, their level of feeling unsafe would be way different from ours…Nd that too because of the recent mass immigration…Of crse, in Korea, it may not not the same…

As a Sri Lankan, my sympathy and condolences go out to Dr. Moumita and her family.
The issue here is that we don't know if men are doing enough to change things because this societal issue is complex.
We can never stop bad men, or all men, from committing such acts. THE MEN WHO WOULD SEXUALLY ASSAULT A WOMAN DON'T CARE MUCH ABOUT THESE CONVERSATIONS. MEN WHO ARE INVOLVED IN SUCH DISCUSSIONS ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE A PART OF THIS ISSUE(but women chose the bear over a man for a reason), but what's happening is that the gender dividence increases every day.
This is why some men end up in jail, while others are in the Olympics-no system is perfect. But sexually assaulting a woman is against the law, is it not?
What I initially saw was a movement for justice for Dr. Moumita. But it soon shifted into a heated gender debate between angry feminists and men. For once, we should set that aside and focus on fighting for justice and, most importantly, addressing the root causes.
Many leftists and feminists avoid discussing the actual root causes of these issues. Making women strong, independent "boss babes (CEOs)" doesn't necessarily make anyone safer. Dr. Moumita was stronger and more financially independent than most people in this conversation, but that did not stop her from being raped and murdered.
EDUCATING YOUNG MEN (although whenever anyone suggests supporting men, many feminists disparage it as a support movement for patriarchy, which it is not), having community programs for men (especially men under 25), sex education, improving communication skills, understanding how women's behaviour and their bodies, addressing addictions, etc., are more important than anything.
This has been a long discussion, and there may be many reasons for women's indignation, but it's time for both women and men to have a different approach to this issue.
Thank you. God bless you all.

I am a well educated woman, coming from family background seeing my mom and myself in constant domestic violence through my father and his family and I had always called out my mom (not blaming her) on why she didn’t leave that marriage. She answered that was because of her children. She wasn’t financially independent and she didn’t want us to have our future destroyed (though I know she was really really intelligent, she would have made a great career if she moved away from that marriage but she was really scared because of constant violence and lack of support from her brothers) and
When the similar happened to me in my marriage (which was a love marriage btw) I did the same, I didn’t take a stand for myself. And though I did take divorce but now I realise that the moment violence was inflicted on me for the very first time, I should have reported FIR against my husband and his mom and his sister right then and there. It’s because I didn’t do anything but suffer by myself to the core, his mother’s audacity increased exponentially and she started doing that every moment she felt convenient. And that so called my love, was blind, literally blind, who said- it was all in my head!! Imagine that someone inflicting physical violence, verbal abuse and constant manipulation on you and your partner says it’s all in your head?? And additionally, There were clear restrictions on me, what I wear, where I go, to inform each and every member of his family etc etc in name of my security while I was not safe in the house itself.
At the end, I would like to say to all the women, please don’t tolerate abuse at any cost!! No kind of abuse, neither physical nor otherwise, emotional, mental.. none!! Please do not tolerate even one instance of abuse. Please.

This was truly a very informative and practical video. I'm a boy in my late teens and listening to my female friends about their encounters with harrassment made me realise that thid is not something rare and those friends i used to meet everyday were carrying so much trauma behind their smiles. But still i see many boys in college or gym having zero respect for women, like they can't see women as humans with feelings. I try to fix the perspective of males close to me and even try to be better myself. I'm ashamed of what women has to go through because of men.
I'd like to request you to make a similar practical video for boys as well to fix their their perspective and learn to respect women. ❤️‍🩹

feminists don't talk enough about the differences between men and women and the importance of family. feminists say that women should focus on their careers when they're young and that this will solve all their problems. If women only focus on their careers, it might be hard for them to have a good family, because as they get older, it becomes harder to have children. Feminists should think about these differences and encourage women to balance their careers with their personal lives, including having a family."

Such songs should be boycotted and such songwriters should be shamed for how they view women and degrade them as a whole publicly.

While this got recommended to me and I am a man, I personally really can't stand the situation of women in this "country" if you can even call it one. And yes it is true that you *really should not trust whatever people comment online* , I would rather do whatever I can to want to help women (I say they are both the form Prakriti and Goddess Saraswati takes) so if there is more than speaking up and being decent then I'll do what it takes. As much as I would request any female reading this comment to be wary of any male including me commenting, I personally am interested in seeing a world and India where women be given the rights they deserve.
Finally, to live in a world where the worst can happen to your and my dear mother, sister, female friends and other females is just... I can't stand it I just want to see this abuse towards women stop.

I don't know if this is a feminist concept or not, but i believe that men and women are not equal at all. Both can do wrong things and crime so you can't blame someone based on Gender.
BUT the equality I demand are the human rights only. Just treat everyone as a human not a girl or boy. If they are wrong noth should be punished equally.
BUT they should also offered equal amount of safety to live.
For example if you think of rape as a kind of physical abuse where someone is using your body for their own pleasures.
So Boys , please imagine a physical abuse on your body where someone is beating you up and making you do a kind of physical work ,you don't wanna do.
    Won't you feel disgusted?
Or imagine (like in movies that the world is taken up by monsters and then a hero saves us)
Imagine that kind of senerio where you can't go out as there are monsters outside your house(in disguise of a human) who can murder you at any point , even walking on road, going to a shop, your workplace etc.
Won't you feel horrified of who to trust?
So it's not about equality or feminism, it's a human right to feel safe.
And we have to eradicate those monsters whether they are male and female.

I think most of the parents should take this ideology off that there raja betas dont just become a grown a$$ man from being a toddler! They need to be taught about things...men are humans too...everything comes at certain because of the learning, bcz these things are taught...a teenager probably is a person with a brain of child and body of an adult...every human should be more encouraged to read good books atleast...and reading shouldn't be considered a hobby but a mandatory thing in people's life...getting educated about mathematics and science is indeed great but its still is done career wise tho reading more about helping oneself or about literally anything boosts the brain and cognition and let one's mind open to ground...

I want to add something....we need to change our focus from the victim to the culprits. It has been enough now to just tell girls about the problems, methods to safeguard ourselves etc from our childhood. The protective measures need to be taken by women but more importantly it is crucial to tell boys about the same, educate them, putting restrictions and treat them equally. From the childhood itself it has been taught that if you're a girl you cannot wear this, can't go out late night while their brothers are free to do anything. It naturally inculcates that "1 ache ghar ki ladki" vala stereotype and restrictions are only for women....its MEN & BOYS who needs focus nd protection from bad influences now!!

Let me tell you my story:
I was going to my coaching class and i was wearing a full length kurta and totally covered. It was just 50m away from the center and since it was afternoon residential area, nobody was around. I suddenly felt a slap on my ass. Mind you i was wearing a fully covered dress. It was a guy with black shirt on red pulsar bike no helmet. He turned looks disgusting and he had a look of "tarak" in his eyes. Absolutely no fear. I still remember his face clearly even though its been 10 years. I screamt he left obviously.. that guy got no real balls ... Not one house opened the door. This is relatively in a safer city Hubli, north Karnataka.
Cut to after 4 years i was walking to meet my friend. 2 galis after the tution wala road. Suddenly light goes off and ofcourse i got scared. It was around 7 pm and no street light. I was running to meet him. I could see him standing in a bike waiting for me. The moment he saw me running he took the bike and turned as i was jogging/walking faster. There must be few meters of distance again same slap, same bike, same guy and this time i froze. Mostly i feel because it's pitch black. My friend followed him and he just disappeared in traffic as that red pulsar guy ran light and went in opposite direction of vehicle. I started crying. Went to a nearby shop with light, called up my parents and stay put.
We went to the police and no use, as we din see number plate itseems. That guy violated traffic signal but back then there were no cameras.
I am still petrified of red pulsar and walking alone on road. I either walk in a park or track. I feel even an innocent man walking behind me, i stop, i let him pass and then i walk. Even though i am in Bangalore currently. Those incidents scarred me deeply. I was not raped, but faced borderline harrasment. and still this is the fear and impact an incident can have despite this happened 7-10 years ago in a different city. I can only imagine what the rape victims across the world must have gone through. INDIA IS NOT FUCKING SAFE.
Ps: when i see a guy in police uniform. I dont feel protected, i feel scared. I shiver.
