  • The book calls them 'Mortimer Snerds'. The 2002 film calls them 'The Ultras'. But it's safe to say a Carrie adaptation is not complete without a girl posse for Chris to torment her nemesis with.
    Our actresses:
    1976
    *PJ Soles (Norma Watson)
    *Edie McClurg (Helen Shyres)
    *Noelle North (Frieda Jason)

    Also, something I never noticed until recently: aside from Norma/Tina, most of the girls AREN'T mean to Carrie when Chris isn't around, i.e in all the versions there's one girl who is nice to her and compliments her dress. They also mostly seem genuinely happy for her when she becomes Prom Queen. This makes me think that maybe most of them don't actually have ill will towards her and are just succumbing to peer pressure and the like.

    • @BetterWithBob
      @BetterWithBob  3 года назад +22

      Yeah especially since Chris is such an oppressive presence that they fear she might do bad things to them if they don't go along with her.

    I completely agreed with the fact the 2013 Remake of Carrie needed more screen time from all the girls, in a way to be “cheering up” the death scenes, we needed to know more about them, not being just a simple background characters.
    They did a poor job developing more complex characters like we saw in the 2002 version (that’s why I really enjoyed this movie).
    PJ Soles, Katharine Isabelle and Chelan Simmons are well know “scream queens” and I’m very happy they are part of the Carrie Universe.

    In the 2002 version u could see how much Helen started to like Carrie. I like how she stood up for her when Kenny was laughing & pulling faces at her. What a shame she was killed. In the 1976, the people who Carrie couldn't c floating around in her head. Was the ones who wasn't laughing without a doubt. Freida was shocked & appalled u could c it in her eyes. Miss Collins looked like she was going to break down crying. No way were they laughing at her. Only the main bullies & their gangs were. In the 2013 I think had the worst humiliation scene going. U can really c why she made their deaths so painful

    • @BetterWithBob
      @BetterWithBob  4 года назад +11

      It's interesting how the 1976 got around the laughing. In the book, everyone was, including Miss Desjardin. But they weren't mainly laughing because they found it funny - but the sort of nervous laughter that comes when something shocking happens. So Carrie interpreted that as everyone laughing at her expense. Obviously you can't really convey that in a film, so imagining everyone laughing was a nice touch.

    Miss Collins didn’t bring it on herself, beyond making the understandable mistake of not listening to Sue when she was trying to warn her about the prank. I can’t fathom how anyone could reason she bears any culpability in the tragedy or her own death. She also happened to inadvertently save Sue’s life by throwing her out of the gymnasium. That said, this is a really interesting and well done video and I think it’s a testament to the lasting power and relevance of Stephen King’s story and its themes. Though I will say Brian De Palma’s amazing original film is probably the single biggest reason the story is so embedded in the public consciousness.

    • @alanstevens1296
      @alanstevens1296 Год назад +2

      I saw that as social backwardness and use of obsolete language.
      I was in high school in the 1970s and then telling someone to "shut up" was a forceful way of telling them to "stop talking." In general use it still is.
      In circa 2002 the slang meaning of “shut up” often meant that you don't believe or are surprised by what someone just said. You are surprised or amazed.
      That is what the girl meant when finding out that Carrie made her own dress.

    I love the 2013 prom scene the best. It is just so satisfying and replayable because of how it has the most brutal deaths out of the 3 movies, and Carrie actually targeting them. However, I would’ve loved if the other girls got more development since even though the deaths were fantastic, it did feel a bit odd for some underdeveloped side characters (borderline background characters) to have such prominent deaths.

      @@BetterWithBob There was allegedly supposed to be a scene where Chris and the other girls bully Sue in a director’s cut version of the film, which I’m not 100% sure I believe because Sue and Heather were kinda friends during the movie and Heather wasn’t really being rude to her at the prom, but who knows.

    In the original book and 1976 film, Sue showed up to the prom ONLY to make sure Carrie was okay. Sue had constantly seen how Carrie was treated by classmates, teachers and other characters in the book and was really the only character (Save for the gym teacher) who felt sorry for her after the tampon harrassment so, she wanted to make sure that Tommy was treating her with nothing but kindness.

    Norma was very cunning and sadistic as much as Chris . She even hangs with Chris all the time in the 76 movie . When collecting ballots I noticed off the bat , The snickering voice , And she knew by listening in that Carrie was going to prom because she knew through the meeting with miss collins Tommy, Sue and told Chris . Norma 1976 was a big player in the blood prank . And she laughed hard enough for all to hear when the bucket was dumped.

      I'm not sure. In interviews, Sissy has said that she was auditioning for Carrie and really lobbying for the role - even rubbing vaseline in her hair to make it look greasy and wearing an old dress. Supposedly Brian DePalma tried to discourage her but she pushed for Carrie anyway. I do know that Amy Irving was a leading candidate before she got cast as Sue, and there was an unknown actress called Betty Slade in the running too.

I read the original script and I wish they had kept it the final film closer to that. I wish they would have released all the deleted scenes. The mean girls have so much potential in the film but feel like glorified extras. It's especially frustrating because as you said in this version Carrie singles them out and they get pretty brutal deaths. Imagine Tina in the 2002 version getting 2013 Tina's death. I had one written for him but at the time Ansel Elgort had some statutory rape allegations, and I felt a bit odd discussing the character at that time - since his version is the one I liked best. I might revisit that video sometime in the future though

      @@BetterWithBob Ansel was my favourite Tommy too, so hearing about his allegations was extremely disheartening. At least there are two other versions of Tommy I can appreciate.

      @@theangelproductions I did like Tobias Mehler's version too, though I'm a little lukewarm to William Katt's, if that's not heresy to say 🙈

      @@theangelproductions He also bodyshamed Chloe grace moretz too. Basically he was saying how he’d never date her in real life, saying she was too big for him. I never liked Tommy in the 2013 remake, Ansel comes off as a creep to me.
      I found this info from this video, its near the end when she talks about the characters ruclips.net/video/7xxzF4-pmE4/видео.html

      Highschool popularity doesn’t actually care about looks as much as most people think. It’s more-so your demeanor and personality, and Carrie being shy, timid, sheltered and religious, those qualities would get her bullied.
      And personally, I knew some very good looking people that were bullied
