This vid is so biased nerds do one bad thing after being treated like shit constantly and all of a sudden everyone is moral beacons and they deserved there treatment all along
It reminds me of that quote from the social network “you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole”
It's giving the Penguin comic where he fell in love 😭😭 I don't wanna spoil too much but he gets rejected because he's a criminal and an awful person - not because he looks like a- well, penguin
This. Marvel, Game of Thrones, anime, K-pop, nerd culture has become pop culture. Some people might make fun of others, but people in general don’t care as long as you’re not weird about your hobby
@@theshire9173I honestly think a big part of it, besides the internet making connecting with other hobbyers so much easier, is our maximalist tendencies. We own a lot more things, tend to decorate more individually, and marketers see that as a way to sell you more merchandise! There’s a lot more stuff available to purchase for more casual enjoyers, I remember in high school anime and “nerdy” stuff was sold almost only at places like hot topic or specialty stores, and that meant they were expensive! I think part of the openness comes from seeing these hobbies reflected in everyday life.
I think everyone's a nerd, one way or another. A nerd is just someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about a particular subject they like, right? I feel like that's most people, regardless of the subject.
@@mynameisreallycool1I would say the levels are now just more extreme. You like Marvel? Well do you watch the movies or read the comics? You play video games? Do you play mostly games from big studios? Most women don’t even like guys for being nerds. They like guys who are attractive and maybe have a few nerd hobbies. For example when people say “I love nerdy men.” they think of Michael B. Jordan but even he as a kid/teen/young adult was bullied for his interests. The only difference now is he is rich, famous, and generally attractive. Same goes for other famous types who led the charge in making these things seem normal and popular.
They deserve to be treated well by the woman that chooses them. They deserve to be honestly looked at and not just brushed off because of surface level. But they're not entitled to the affections of women who don't want them, whatever the reason. People like what they like.
@ashleycnossen3157 you had me in the first part. The problem with the second part is that by saying that you're justifying shallowness. Which isn't nice or good for society. If a guy likes a girl she should have a good reason why they can't be together, otherwise they are just bad people. It's called rewarding good behavior, and don't nice things for people. Give people a chance, there's nothing wrong with giving people a chance, could make your life all the better. They like what they like and they should be open about them being shallow.
@@senister14 There's nothing wrong with giving someone a chance, but it's their choice. Absolutely no one, male or female, rich or poor, attractive or not, popular or nerdy - absolutely no one is entitled to affection or romance or even TIME from anyone else. That is something that is freely given. It's called consent. If not, it's called harassment.
@ashleycnossen3157 yes, choice to be a terrible shallow person. Yes, but at the same time it's not okay to take advantage of people or lead them on. And everyone deserves some decency of respect. Freely is a strong term. More like horded and only given out to a select few. Yes but concent in modern times is a joke. Actually the quote is It's flirting, unless she finds you unattractive, then it's harassment. That is the quote.
@senister14 That's the quote that guys who lack self awareness use. Everything you said sounds like you don't view women as individual humans, but as collective "WOMAN." Maybe if you change that, your luck will change. Respect is not deserved, it is earned, and if you are not treating women with sincere respect, you're not going to get respect from them. Free advice.
@ashleycnossen3157 quite the opposite actually, more like someone who knows the truth about Woman. No I do, I just know a majority of them are really picky and it's bringing down society. No, the only thing that changed my luck was when I got my gimik. Because God forbid women can't accept me or any other guy as we are unless we look like Ryan Gosling or some other really good looking guy. You can even tell in the video. I have no idea why they included griffin in this, he's good looking he hasn't had to go through the same pain as the rest. Freddie would have been a better example. No, it should be. Half of all society problems would be solved if people respected each other mostly. I do treat them that way buy they don't return the favor. Quite the opposite, they exploit and take advantage of weakness, which usually used to mean beating me. Your free advice needs work.
The whole “girls don’t like nerds” idea completely disregards that girls can be nerds too. If you’re a video game nerd or DnD nerd and want a girlfriend, I guarantee there are girls who are into video games and DnD, but those same male nerds tend to interrogate those girls as “fake fans”
Or will shout down women who are super into the same interests but also comfortable talking about the sexism or other discrimination a lot of the subcultures or media may have, and how they approve of attempts to make progress in that area. I’ve had men get mad at me for saying the original Star Trek series did have some sexism and even for the times could have done better in a few ways, and it’s understandable if some women feel uncomfortable watching it. Even though I said I liked it despite that and Roddenberry and most fans of the progressive values would probably approve of that being discussed and us using it to grow and avoid sexism in future.
I think you’ve nailed it. I enjoy dnd a lot and video games from time to time. I luckily haven’t had any first hand experiences with bad nerdy dudes. I have heard of ppl having those experiences so I know it’s true
The weird thing is that there is some acknowledgement that nerdy girls exist, but that acknowledgement often comes from people who aren't necessarily nerdy themselves who fetishize them in a way that is imo quite cringey: take Velma Dinkley for example. There's also talk that not even nerdy girls want anything to do with nerdy guys 🤷♂️
@@maem7462 I have too with many queer people across the gender spectrum. I'm just annoyed that shows almost never portray people like us in the nerd group. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Ruth from Nerdy Prudes Must Die and Nerris from Camp Camp
As much as I love Carly I will NEVER get over her doing Griffin dirty like that. Him having a hobby that he was he was really passionate about was a green flag to me. I blame the show's bad writing for his character taking a nose dive. Him being a bad boy with a soft side was perfect. There was no reason for them to dial his obsession up the way they did
Fully agree. As a kid I think I did think his hobby was weird but that was likely due to the shows writing. Like you said they dialed it up way too much and I think that made it off putting to me. As I got older I’m like that episode is ridiculous. It’s also strange how a lot of the time the show would make fun of guys for being nerdy or smart. Carly never got that treatment even though she was smart enough to be able to get a spot at a fancy school if I remember correctly the other students there were shown to be smart. It’s a weird double standard that the show has
Honestly, yeah it could be taken as the writing but with the way it was written, Carly did not do him dirty. He had a persona he presented to the world and that is who Carly fell for, it is really important to acknowledge this because then you realise how abrupt it must have been for Carly to suddenly see this whole other side to him that really clashed with the persona she fell for. He made her talk to the figurine for goodness' sake. Things would have been better had Griffin been more self aware and gently introduced this interest he had. Perhaps then Carly may have found this other side to him not half bad and probably endearing. Taking this into consideration, Carly absolutely did not do Griffin dirty.
Let's not forget Leonard's biggest atrocity: Not wearing a condom during sex with Penny in the final couple episodes leading to her getting pregnant(while she was drunk mind you) when she had said many, many times that she didn't want kids. 🙃
Woah, holy shit. I know BBT can be pretty bad when it comes to respecting or depicting women, but this is another level of creepy af. I'm glad I stopped watching before I ever found that out.
Media making all the female characters end up with a man and as mothers can die out imo. Like I hate when writers pet themselves on the back by writing "unique" female characters and then strip them off everything that made them special just so they can end up in the "perfect" marriage with kids.
I hate how he happily admitted that he wore her down to the point to where she married him. Also hated how he’d insult her boyfriends when they didn’t do anything to him
The bad boy isn't a nerd, he's a geek. The chategories overlap but nerds are agreed to be smart usually anti social or otherwise introverted bookworms, geeks are primarily known for their obsession and wealth knowledge of whatever topic they're geeks about.
I always found it funny how media almost completely ignores nerdy women's existence. As a nerdy black girl growing up I was almost always in these spaces along with other nerdy girls. But according to media we don't exist at all, especially poc nerds. The fact that TBBT ,a show about nerds, didn't have any nerdy women with similar hobbies or interest to the guys is a little crazy. Most of the nerdy guys in these tropes always going after women they have nothing in common with and wearing them down over time. Not to mention most of the nerdy guys in these shows are just the typical 'nice guys' and are just as bad as the guys they claim they're better than. Either way, good video! You always come up with fun topics.
This video doesn't exactly help; he seems to take for granted that any girl would kick a guy to the curb if he played live action RPGs or collected plushies, like no woman likes those things herself. And those guys weren't even being creeps or assholes like the guys on TBBT, yet we're supposed to think it's right and okay for their love interests to mock and cruelly dump them for their hobbies.
@@PhoenixRising87 I don't disagree with you. I personally really liked Griffin and would've thought his collection was enduring (until they ruined it of course). If someone dumps you for your hobbies, its their lost at the end of the day. They weren't the one for you anyway. I was moreso saying I liked the topic this video. Its an interesting conversation to unpack at the very least.
While I agree that a lot of nerds in media are misogynistic creeps and that deserves criticism, I do take issue about your assumptions when you said to the audience, "come on, you wouldn't want this either". There are female nerds out there who themselves LARP, I think they'd enjoy doing so with a loved one. Same with Griffin's peewee baby collection - if someone damaged my kpop album collection I'd be as angry as he was. My bf and I met through being anime fans. I would personally find someone without ANY nerdy hobbies to be incredibly boring to spend an extended amount of time with.
I think he was speaking more to the abnormal obsessiveness concerning the nerdy hobby/collectable - not so much the hobby itself. If someone became that kind of feral over nearly any physical item, it could understandably be very off-putting. It’s up to what you value as an individual. For example, I think damaged music vinyls/albums are worth getting upset about… but I definitely think there’s a limit.
Speaking as a LARPer, I actually fully agree with his comment that nobody would want that, but that has more to do with the fact that it was a genuinely terrible depiction of the hobby and the people in it than the idea that LARPers are to be avoided. If you can see yourself enjoying LARP, I recommend giving it a try, whether you have a loved one that's into it or not, most LARPs are super welcoming to new players and it's a great way to form strong bonds relatively quickly so you can quickly feel like part of the group.
I don't have a lot of things in common with my GF sometimes, but the stuff that we do have in common with is cool. We're both technically nerds, but we do show interest in the hobbies that we don't have in common sometimes as well, but that's only because of how we feel towards one another and even if it's not our hobbies, does not mean, we should just flat out dismiss them.
Looking back, Carly is not a great character. She started off fine in the beginning but then got really mean spirited & shallow. But then again this is Nickelodeon.
Honestly that's one of the major things I love about the revival. All it took was one line to completely fix Carly's character. Her conversation with Spencer about their mom changes everything. Every single of her shallow moments and relationship fumbles is recontextualized as a traumatized kid scared of becoming like her deadbeat mother.
@@thecabbageman1 trauma is all it takes for people online to like/forgive a character's actions, feels easy and unearned to me, the problem is not that they act shallow and mean spirited, they just never get the consequences of their actions. Since the icarly crew are like pre-influencers, them becoming more mean seems right to me, but its never explored and are just mean for being meam (like sam to freddy)
I think the Griffin scenario is particularly egregious because of the way they degraded his character. I genuinely believe in his first appearance he is genuinely a dude with a bad attitude who just so happened to have a strange hobby. He never did anything wrong to deserve being incessantly mocked, or have his character flanderized so much. And the show doesn't make it seem like Carly is being shallow, they try to make it seem like she DID dodge a bullet because he likes stuffed toys. I remember watching the episode as a kid and feeling like I had to get rid of my pokemon collection because clearly that would ruin any chance I would ever have of getting a gf. It's messed up to teach kids that someone's interests are a valid interest to be mean to them or ignore them.
As a nerd myself for as long as I have been, if there is the type of nerds I hate it is the ones who change themselves into in an attempt to be liked by some girls they like. Throwing away your own self respect like that for the hopes of a girl like you is pathetic.
I understand that I'm not really a nerd, but I'm a fat person, and I keep on trying to change myself just to be liked but I realize it's stupid I shouldn't change myself to empress others.
I wouldn’t say I hate them, or dislike them. It’s more so I hate what they do rather than them. Theirs a difference between hating someone vs hating the things we do (I say this with much respect as possible).
@@NezukoKamado-li3fvthrowing personality and improving health is a different thing, unless you see being fat as your personality. Have fun being miserable.
These narratives also push the idea that the nerdy guys SHOULD be with the hot girl who has absolutely nothing in common with him, just because he’s “nice”. As many other commenters have noted, there are plenty of women with similar interests that would likely be better suited to the nerds. But no, they need the popular girl because it’s merely an underdog power fantasy.
I agree with the premise of the video but I think two examples in the video aren’t really fair. If you liked someone before knowing their innocent interests and stopped liking them because of those interests that is pretty unfair and shallow.
Agreed, it was confusing to hear him siding with Carly in that whole thing. She's just extremely shallow in her pursuit of and disconnection from Griffin, yet we're supposed to be on her side? Doesn't make a lick of sense.
I agree, especially because you don't get to know the person in their entirety right away in a relationship, that's why it's a relationship. It takes time to get to know one another. So if there's an interest that he wasn't showing to her or publicly, then it would make sense for him to reveal it to, his partner in a relationship because it's his partner, it's someone you're supposed to have trust with and show a lot about to try to get to know each other and grow closer.

I grew up nerdy and in geek, band and anime fandom and i can tell you nerds are nice. They bully each other too, I was told I wasnt a real girl in middle and highschool but I grew into my looks and the same nerdy guys that called ne ugly and not a real girl are asking me out as if they didnt trash me through out school. Alot of then think their better than the 'normal' guys but sometimes they have more in common with their bullies or are worst
Honestly though. I'm a former band kid and I've spent a lot of time in nerdy spaces as a not particularly flamboyant queer and autistic man. I've met a lot of nice people in them. I've also met a fair share of people who were bullies or just straight up bigots. Mainstream nerd culture still has a huge bigotry problem to be honest, and a lot of them refuse to acknowledge it.
I don't know why people spotlight nerd culture like this when EVERYONE thinks they're special and "not like the other ones". Everyone thinks that their hobbies make them different when in reality it's only the hobbies that are different, the people are the same.
Steve Urkel and Laura shouldn't have been a couple in the end. Their relationship is Very Toxic and shouldn't exist. @@NebulaSon She did those things (most of them) after a shitload of flanderization/character derailment to try to push the Steve/Laura pairing. Happens to a lot of perfectly fine love interests in media, sadly. That's the only way some writers know how to solve a love triangle.
Back in highschool some girls asked my out but I rejected them. I refuse to date because I found my grades to be far more important. I used to be such a failure when I was younger but changed my life around after becoming a teenager. Younger me was all play and no work. I changed all that. So many classmates say I was too serious. So much so in fact that teachers mistook me for a teacher and other adults say I don’t act my age. Now, would any tv show ever portray a nerd character like me in tv of my experience? No. These writers only follow a one dimensional view of nerds and won’t make the nerd make a responsible decision because it doesn’t create drama.

Leonard and Penny are really an awful couple even the show had a running gag about How they only ended up together because Leonard basically weared her down overtime funny enough despite that eatly season 1 episode were she says his interest makes him who he is and she accept it, fast forward several seasons later with them being married and its revealed that penny has secretly been moving all of his nerdy thing into storage without him noticing because she dislikes it that much.
The show is extremely misogynistic and written through the lens of "nerds are like this" without actually engaging in genuine nerd culture. It's like mocking nerds more than it is a supposed love letter to them, so you can't really expect too much from it.
That episode always bothered me how she never apologized for going behind his back and removing the things he had invested his money and time into she even doubled down and said she wasn’t going to stop getting rid of his stuff I would never date some one that was actively forcing a change on me I was not ready or wanted to make.
Leonard was only trying to help Penny be more realistic It came across as hurtful, but let’s not pretend Penny never said anything hurtful to Leonard. The reverse is far more common but most of the time they are a wholesome couple.
Something I think its worth mentioning is that Carly was kind of a hypocrite because she is also kind of a weirdo because of the Icarly show. Like how are you expecting someone to be fine with you doing freaky shit for the world to see but draw the line at plushie colections
I’m sorry but where did Carly do weird things on her webshow besides the comedy aspect, let’s see she was the idiot cowgirl, the cheerleader in space and….. just because she has a webshow doesn’t make her a hypocrite, she’s an Internet personality who makes a comedy show with her two friends, how is that weird?
@@caramelcoffee706 It's not less hypocritical just because Carly was the 'right' type of strange to be profitable in the show's universe. Carly has straight up commited crimes for content but somehow can't comprehend a guy liking animal plushes.

I want someone to do a video about how no one in Victorious seems to have like a stable home life. It's kind of insane. iCarly is like this a bit too but there's more characters in Victorious so it's even more jarring in that show. Even Tori and Trina have pretty neglectful parents. 🙃
Funny enough cobra kai flips this a little bit where one of the nerdy, engineer kids not only gets the attractive popular girl, she admires him when she sees him as a confident version of himself. Geek and all.
Man i never liked that "Robbie assaulted Cat" joke, not only because realistically the friends would all cut ties with him but also I find Matt Bennet really attractive so I can't really not like this pairing (I just ignore that stupid fucking joke).
I just hate the fact people made up the lie that Robbie assaulted Cat. I get that in most Dan Schneider shows there’s always jokes or hints that could be twisted to make it seem like someone was sexually assaulted or whatever someone wants to twist it in to but let’s me realistic here, Cat isn’t fully developed mentally or emotionally. She’s a literal child in a teenager’s body. For all we know her not liking the way Robbie “plays pirates” can mean any number of things that are the complete opposite of whatever sexual assault bs people try to spin. Yeah she screamed “NO!” when he suggested it but again, she’s mentally an elementary school kid. That’s how they always react to things they don’t like or want to do. I don’t have an end to this.
It's kinda weird how much Dan Schneider hates nerds when he definitely fits the stereotype and then some. I don't know if it is some kind of self-hatred he is projecting onto those types of characters but it is strange the amount of vitriol he has towards nerds despite being one.
He also made many fat jokes for Josh Peck and Noah Monk, giving them major body image issues, when he was also the subject of fat jokes that gave him body image issues
I agree on all except the Griffin one in iCarly. Carly was just judging him, and I feel like the writers made his obsession with the peewee babies go to a 10 in the iBeat The Heat episode to justify her for judging. And the iCarly revival did not do a good job explaining for that. It just doesn't make sense to me how Carly can be superficial like that, when the whole point of her web-show is to be able to let people be weird, like what they like, and express themselves. Carly definitely does judge the nerd kind of characters, she did it to Freddie all of the time (no matter what the revival series is tryna gaslight us, she doesn't like them)
The pear store episode was one of the most shocking things I’ve seen on icarly. The fact that the incident with Carly and that store employee aired Nickelodeon really makes me rethink everything that I’ve seen on TV as kid, and teenager because THAT was insane! 😧
I watched that episode when I was older since it was reairing on teennick or something and that shit made me scratch my head, genuinely concerning to have it be made so lightly. The whole ordeal felt out of character for Carly as a character too. Just awful vibes from that.
I'm surprised that the fact that they felt entitled or only felt attraction to the conventionally pretty girl wasn't brought into the conversation, the fact that they often are repulsed by girls with the same interests or hobbies as them because they aren't skinny or what is considered "hot" by the show's standards, reflecting that incels do tend to dislike a lot of nerdy girls for being Not Skinny™, or for being "fake fans" of whatever the topic of interest is, in high school I wasn't considered attractive in a lot of male eyes (no biggie because I'm gay) but the moment I became unavailable to them, I got more attention. I think the factor of attractiveness and availability are a big part of this topic, because it's very obvious in media that all of the "main" nerds are going after the hot and/or unavailable (either due to lack of interest, or already off the market) girlies
@@Galactic_Kitty Well there so many things that are wrong with your post. Many of them is just not true at all. I will start off with the fact that they're so many nerds who will love a nerdy girl. A woman who has the same interest is like a dream come true for most nerds that I know. I don't know any nerd who just go after hot women. Most men know when they're leagues below. And tbh even the nerdy girls don't seem to be into nerdy guys.
@@NebulaSon that's fair, I was mainly talking about media and people who are more influenced by said media, plus my experiences on top of that, I don't think all nerdy men purely go for or are solely attracted to the hot woman archetype, because that would be very narrow of me. The amount of times that nerdy girls in media were portrayed poorly doesn't help, but I know humans as a whole are complex and nuanced irl
What I hate the most about that TBBT episode is that they were just so close to make a good point about the percieved "geek culture" in a contemporary setting. Sheldon confronts Penny for what she said to Leonard, pointing out that there isn't anything inherently wrong about collecting toys responsibly and that, technically, ahe also collects stuff in the fashion that stereotypical 80s culture would consider "geeky" and "worth ridiculizing". They were so close to saying something about the fundations of what this show stands from (that is, outdated stereotypes), but they just scoffed that away quickly to go back to the same cheap comedy.
It's because it was played for laughs, if you don't think too deeply about it and follow the queues of the laugh track it can be easy to miss stuff like that, he was a creepy weirdo and they didn't try to hide it or cover it up, but it was presented as a thing to laugh at and dismiss rather than a thing to be bothered by so a lot of people weren't bothered by it when they normally would be.
It’s always a trend in nerd movies, they what the popular girl who isn’t interested in them and often times uses them to get what they want but they completely ignore the nerdy girl who’s been there for them the whole time and can’t see she’s the better option, its become a trope at this point
The Goldbergs is a perfect example of this. Throughout the show the main character Adam complains about being a socially awkward nerd despite the fact that it doesn't actually hinder his ability to make friends and form relationships. He's awful to every girl he dates to the point in one episode he ruins his girlfriend's opening night for a play she got the lead role in because he's jealous of her. the girls never break up with him because of his behavior but instead it's because of them moving away and going to different school
But if the works of fiction are portraying nerds as creeps all the time, aren't they actually given more arguments towards negative preconceptions than to positive ones?
Outside of Dan Schnieder's weird hate boner for them, It's less that the shows are intentionally painting them in a bad light, and more that the shows are written by nerds who think the behavior showcased is okay, it's bad behavior excused by the shows.
Artie also shames tina for faking her stutter because he "can't fake being disabled" but at the same time... she faked a stutter for over 10 years because she's shy and doesn't wanna talk to people. The fact that majority of the examples of nerdy characters are boys/men brings up the point of misogyny to me. Even when ppl talk about the mistreatment of nerds, they always point to the nerdy guys, mostly the white cisgender heterosexual nerdy guys, and the women, lgbtq+, and bipoc nerds are always overlooked in mainstream media.
I figured you're overlooked classified instead as geeks. Nerds are stereotyped as unattractive, unpopular, unwanted, and possibly lacking in personal style/inexperienced socially/poor physical hygiene/shabby at grooming, etc of ugly characteristics. Nerds are considered inhuman addicts to a certain extent. Basically neglecting all areas of their outwardly existence except what interests their inward soul. Geeks on the other hand are considered likable, strong, beautiful, compassionate, and honorable. A nerd is deemed a weak, worthless, laughing stock deserving nothing except ridicule and callous mockery. Do you really want the spotlight on you as nerds is what I'm getting at?
What? People always talk about the the mistreatment of women. And whenever someone talks about the mistreatment of males, people like this always make this video.
The reason the majority of examples are nerdy people are men is because that's what makes up the majority of that demographic. Nerdy women are rare to come by and these same women go after the more popular men, also women being nerdy isn't seen as a bad thing but men being nerdy is seen as then being less of a man so women don't like them.
@@JuliAuditore Women nerds are not that rare, they're just often made to feel excluded because of some of the exact behavior demonstrated in this video. Carly was absolutely just being shallow and rebellious, her illusions were shattered when Gavin showcased that he was an actual human being and not a bad boy caricature. She's a teenager so this is understandable but, and this is important, absolutely not agreeable behavior. It's also increasingly obvious to me that he was flanderized in his final appearance to make her seem more reasonable, but that's just bad writing and he still wasn't written in a way that was off-putting or disturbing enough to justify siding with her like this show wants you to. If anything, he dodged a bullet despite the show's portrayal otherwise. Bad take.
To be fair, its still very strange, he barely even let Carly touch them without being super strangely attached to them, I agree it was unnecessary that they dialed up his obsession to the extreme but only because there was an abundance of undertones that could be seen as weird, it seems normal at first but once you start peeling off the layers, it’s strange, and Carly never automatically hated him because he had a strange hobby, she thought he was a cool dude but just didn’t want to pursue in a relationship anymore because she thought it’s weird and couldn’t understand why a teenage boy was so attracted to such strange things, she’s not completely against nerds with weird hobbies because her best friend is a nerd who she actually starts to like and reciprocates his feelings towards him, but people have limits to what they can handle in a relationship, that was hers and it’s totally fine, she should find a guy she actually likes. I agree she shouldn’t have brutally dumped him because of this, she should’ve have just asked his why he likes to collect them, so maybe she could understand him better but if she still decides not to pursue anything romantic, then that’s her choice and it’s fine, she’s not obligated to date him if she never likes him for him in the first place
Icarly overall was to me a show that feld it was made for mentally ill people and it makes me mentally sick because how uncanny and psychotic these characters are
Ok, you make a good point about the trope of nerds always being presented as the good, nice guys, when they can often be just as problematic as the jocks or bad boys, but you're neglecting the bad writing of these shows being the true problem of these nerdy characters' creepiness. The horrible way these nerdy tv & movie characters are written is the true issue here. It paints all nerds as being weird, creepy guys, who obsess over girls they are into, & who ultimately have no respect for them. That's total bullshit, & it's incredibly dangerous to paint any group of people, that way. Particularly today, in the social media age. As a nerd myself, though not the stereotypical kind, I take great offense to us being portrayed that way, or it being insinuated that we're all creeps, & therefore don't deserve love. It's also laughable that the writers of iCarly were insinuating that if he chose tools as his new hobby, that that would automatically make him a better dating choice. LMAO, it's not like, guys who are experts with tools, can't also be controlling, abusive, or obsessive creeps! Anyways, the real issue here is unrealistic, & shitty writing, & also fantasy archetypes of both people, & relationships. Also, the shitty writers on these shows seem to ignore the fact that girls can be nerds too, & can also be interested in collecting toys & replicas, playing D&D, etc. Yes, there are nerdy guys, like this out there, but you can find those kinds of guys, in pretty much any kind of groups or walks of life. In the case of Steve Urkel, I'd argue this his main issue is falling for the wrong girl, & letting himself become obsessed with her. Also, I got a big issue with the title of this video. It's incredibly misleading, & sends the wrong message.
It’s also a bad thing to categories all nerd as being social awkward but well mannered people who deserve women, that’s just as bad because there are bad nerds out there
I am SO glad I'm not the only one who noticed how absolutely creepy most of these guys are especially Urkel. It drove me insane how people would think Laura was wrong for rejecting him when really she was way nicer to him than I would've been
I am not that familiar with iCarly, but that episode with Griffin proves that the show was written by men because in real life, no girl is going to reject a guy like Griffin for collecting beanie-baby-inspired stuffed animals (unless the guy prioritizes collecting and caring about the stuffed animals over her and their relationship, which seems like the show tried to do but did it so sloppily). The random nerd that tried to kiss carly without her consent is a much better icarly example of a misogynystic male nerd women encounter in real life. Big bang theory is a trash show and hits too close to home when it comes to portraying how sexist, cruel, and entitled nerdy guys can be towards gals (especially nerdy gals). I am not familiar with victorious, but seems like robbie was Dan's and the male writers' self-insert character, which makes it worse considering how creepy he was. Steve urkel's obsession with Laura was annoying and cringy to look at (made even worse when laugh tracks were added in). Didn't watch glee or good luck charlie, but the male nerd becoming a womanizer and bad boyfriend and husband later on after dating a girl that is conisdered "hot" is unfortunately a very common experience, along with gals being forced and pressured into liking and tolerating their male partners' interests and beliefs but never having the vice versa happen in return.
What wasn’t mentioned in the video that for the rest of the episode there a running gag that those dolls are for little girls. Other characters who found out thinks Griffin is a loser. So it wasn’t just Carly being uptight.
@@JohnWilliams-wl9px I see. Some of the clips shown implied that, but those points probably weren't too relevant to the theme of the video. Beanie babies being only for little girls is news to me though.
Sorry I disagree with your Icarly take. Yeah she is a teenager and teenagers can be immature but that doesn't mean she isn't wrong. I don't get where she comes from. I really liked the fact that there was a bad boy who had non a bad boy character trait. It showed that everyone is far more complex than what their image is. And I really hated how they portrayed Carly as the one in the right for not liking beanie babies
It was still weird tho, I agree she shouldn’t have dumped him but it was wasn’t a innocuous hobby, it was a strange infatuation, an obsession and I got a little weirded out when griffin cared so much about his plush pets that he barely let Carly near them or even touch them, that’s like having a boyfriend but realizing he has a collection of body pillows, it’s a little more than an interest. And she never hated him after or had a problem with him as a person, she just couldn’t wrap her head around why a teenage boy would be so obsessed with something so strange, I do agree Carly could’ve taken the time to understand him better rather than brutally dumb him, I feel like the best solution is for them to talk more
Fictional nerds and geeks as a whole deserve nothing, because they're horrid. I think actual nerds and geeks as a whole are "deserving" (for lack of a more preferable word) of just as much as any other demographic. "Deserving" is such a loaded word that tends to illicit a sense of entitlement. No one is entitled to attention or affection, besides children from their parents (and even then, only to a healthy extent.) Everyone has the right to their preferences; I'm a nerd and geek who's fine with not being everyone's preference. What I'm not okay with is hurting others for having harmless interests. It does not need to be that serious
22:23 if I actually like him & he gave me a heads up with rules before the LARP began I might not have broken up with him. Doesn’t mean I always have to play with him but I’m showing interest
As someone who would be classified as a nerd, always pissed me off how nerds were always depicted as either 'nice guys' who are obly interested in generic hot girls (i mean generic as in they always the hot chick self described by the show( and that girls had zero intereste in 'nerdy things' , but then theres the other half where were depicted as pathetic push overs who are mocked for being 'virgins ' but called creeps for merely existing near a girl....well to be fair when a 'nerdy' girl is depicted she usually gets the same treatment of undesirable pathetic and butt of the joke. Its only recently where ive seen nerds just depicted as actual characters.
2:17 this episode is fun but Carly hating Griffin’s hobby was a terrible plot line I absolutely hate 7:13 I wouldn’t have broken up with him. That actually would’ve made me like him more
As far as Griffin goes, two things can be true. She dodged a bullet and she dumped him for having a nerdy hobby. I agree that his character degraded by the next time we see him but it's odd to include that as her reason for dumping him. She isn't Raven Simone, she can't see the future. She probably just liked the idea of a bad boy at that time and didn't like him not living up to the fantasy she had in her head of him. I do agree that it doesn't mean she hates nerds, but it does mean that that wasn't what she was interested in at that moment. As for her being interested in a nerd later, she's a teenager. It's common for them to go through phases, mature and think differently year after year. What she likes when she's 14 may not be what she's interested in at 16. Anyway, people hating on a kid for having an emotional reaction or desire that doesn't make sense to them is silly. When I was a teenager, I thought a girl was cute until I noticed that she constantly said "Slap" in a weird drawn out way. "Ssssllllaaaap". No idea why it bothered me so much. Anyway, I just wanted to say that what we do as kids doesn't always have a rational explaination. Either way, no one should judge people for dating preferences as long as they aren't hurting anyone.
My favorite example of the nice guy netd being flipped on it's head is Hal Stewart a.k.a. Tighten from MegaMind who at first just seems like a nice guy nerd but once he gets superpowers he turns out to be a creepy incel.
Yeah your explanation makes Carly sound a lot worse when it comes to dating. It sounds like she consistently decides who a person is and dumps them if that doesn't match. She doesn't bother to get to know any of them before pursuing and dating them.
In all honesty this video feels very hypocritical, you were going out of your way to disprove negative stereotypes such as the Angry Black Women trope, however when in the face of another social stereotype of media that is just as negative your only argument is “it is what it is” you don’t give any argument as to how extremely negative this stereotype type is especially to any nerdy young men whom only form of “representation” are these creeps you mentioned in the video. Anyone is capable of good and bad behavior doesn’t matter if you’re a nerd or a jock and yet you’re only argument to this negative trope is “if a girl wants a nerdy creep okay then you do you girl”
@678fireplace I agree that race is a much more serious issue and I should have been much more careful with my wording, sorry. I think my main problem with this video is with the examples given, everyone here has negative traits to them (or just straight up awful) and instead of saying “hey maybe we can try to change things going forward” there’s only just “hey date whoever you want idc but these guys are really weird”
I never liked them together, especially once she got pregnant in the end. The second that baby is born I can see their marriage disintegrating. And the implications of how she got pregnant (Leonard refusing to wear a condom with her, while she was drunk, when she's said several times she didn't want kids) are... icky.
I just hate that most storylines with nerds revolve around the girls just changing them from liking what they like and never having anything like that in their “normal home.” Like the entire episode where Bernadette had an entire competition to get rid of Howard’s doctor who closet? Like girl who the fuck are you to diss your husband’s interest like that?
Okay, but I don't quite understand what you're trying to do with this video. Your leading question is whether nerds deserve love, and then you show a series of examples of fictional nerds that behaved in bad and sometimes misogynistic ways. But that tells us nothing about how nerds behave in real life, only how screenwriters believe nerds should behave - and it's not a secret that TBBT wasn't as much a celebration of nerd culture as it pretends to be. In the screenwriters' minds there might exist this image of the good natured nerd who deserves love but gets overlooked because girls are not into that, but then they get to interpret what good natured behaviour looks like (and that isn't exclusive to nerds; eg Ted Mosby is also portrayed in a very positive light), or on the other hand, turn up someones obsession to show that yes, actually a niche interest is a good reason to turn someone down. Fictional characters behaving badly is absolutely not a reason to say real life people don't deserve love, but then again, of course, it's not like problems with misogyny or generally shitty behaviour don't exist with real life nerds. This is actually a point where media criticism can come in handy, because what is the message that popular media sends to nerds? That girls will not be into them, but that they deserve love more than the jocks, no matter what they do, because they are just generally kinder people. I think we are in agreement here, and I can see how such depictions of nerds can lead to things like the 'nice guy' phenomenon. But then the appropriate thing to do would be to criticize the media and cultural attitudes that create such mindsets (perhaps a better ending to Leonard's story would have been him cheating and belittling Penny, and her breaking up as a result, teaching the right lesson that you can't get away with being an asshole just because you are a nerd), not to criticize fictional characters, say they had it coming and call it a day. Oh, and one last thing. Regardless of how media portrays nerds, and how things have changed in the last decades with more and more girls getting into nerdy stuff, the trope that girls don't look at the geeks probably didn't come out of nowhere either. Many nerds probably DID have a hard times finding romantic partners, though the reasons may be more that people who have very niche interests are also often not the best at socializing and communicating; so the cause for girls (or boys) not looking at nerds may not have been what they interpreted it to be. We can only speculate. But there was a social climate that made movies like Revenge of the Nerds possible. And I do think a lot has changed since then, with nerd culture being practically mainstream now (though socially awkward people still struggle with dating, naturally). So to answer your question: Do nerds deserve love? Yes. All of us do. Just not unconditionally.
When I was a teenager, my group of friends liked anime, video games and the usual geek stuff. I didn’t have much in common with them, but I hung out with them mainly because my oldest best friend was one of the group. But as the years went by, they started becoming very mean. They had a lot of resentment for the posh or cool boys in our generation, but they would still buy designer clothes from the same brands they derided the cool guys for wearing. Neither had had a girlfriend (let alone sex, as far as I know) and were very bitter that the pretty, cool girls didn’t pay them attention…even if the geek girls were still available. They referred to women in very misogynistic ways, rating them by their boobs and butts…and I get that teenagers are horny and say dumb stuff, but the way they talked made them look shallow and awful. In one particular instance, they made fun of me for liking a pretty girl just because her boobs were small, “true straight men like big boobs” apparently. Speaking of straight men, they also were very homophobic. The worst of them all, named Ricardo, once said something like “being homophobic means that you are afraid of homosexuals, but I’m just disgusted by them!”. Ironically, another guy named Alejandro was also homophobic but years later came out of the closet and is now a proud supporter of the LGBT movement, so at least he matured. As for me, I was still unaware of my homosexuality, yet I was a special target for their bigoted jokes and humiliated me with their gross pranks. Once they recorded me in my sleep while staining my face with a mayonnaise-filled cucumber, pretending it was cum. In another occasion, they got on top of me and recorded me while they twisted my nipples and threatened me with uploading it on the then emerging RUclips platform, but admittedly they never did. And as friends, they really weren’t supportive, especially to me. At the time, I was part of the swimming team and competing at state and national levels. I can only think of one time when they congratulated me, and it was very coldly. They were never caring or empathetic as true friends should be. As the time went by, I sought them out less because I felt uncomfortable with them, and they became very passive aggressive in response. Things eventually boiled up and I exploded and beat them and shouted at them. We didn’t speak for months. We tried to resume the friendship, but it was clear they hadn’t learnt anything and eventually I left in bad terms. Years later, we would kind of reconcile, but I avoided them from then on. Looking back, I wonder if maybe they were going through tough times in their upbringing; if they had some sort of trauma they were processing; or if they too were closeted gays or bi, ashamed and coping negatively. I hope they matured and that it was just a dumb, adolescent phase. But they were the classic example that nerds and geeks can be just as horrible, if not more, as the archetypical popular men.
I am a nerd myself and often got bullied in school and never fought back. My reasons for not fighting back was never because of being a nerd and therefore weak. I refuse to fight back for 4 reasons: 1. It won’t solve anything. 2. Even when the victim fights back justifiably you still get shit and the victimizer gets a slap on the wrist. 3. My elders will always say it is my fault. 4. I have been a martial artist since age 11 but as a teenager I never fight back against my bullies because it is a teacher’s job to maintain order in the classroom and if a fight broke out, the teacher will be blamed by their superiors. I wasn’t going to jeopardize my teacher’s jobs just because I wanted to make myself feel better. Teens may not care about the well being for their teacher’s but I do.
Any elder telling you it was your fault is an idiot and shouldn't have their "opinions" take seriously. The other reasons honestly need a more in depth conversation because those reasons can be seen as problamatic when you think about it.
On the other hand, as I was watching this, I felt so attacked! I’m so sad to hear these things but some of my favorite characters. The kind characters I’ve been rooting for because I have been on the able to find love myself, because each time they do it gives me hope that I can. Right now, I guess it’s hard for me (and I might get over this eventually over time) to learn that nerds are just as flawed as anybody else. They’re not always harmless, ignored victims that want love but can’t get it.
Okay being a geek who did sports growing up made me a well rounded guy to notice that the age range of some girl from 17-25 can be shallow where girl 26 and older can respect that you can have a life outside of the relationship has who what’s a desperate&clingy guy that also gave me a leg up now
There are countless examples you could use that would serve perfectly to explain your point, and yet you chose Griffin and Carly? Where the guy did absolutely nothing wrong, he just had an unusual hobby and Carly was the superficial one in the situation. Even Freddy and Carly would be a better example for this, since he likes her to an almost obsessive level in the first seasons and everything he did was not to be a good friend, but only in the hope that Carly would fall in love with him someday.
I got turned down. For years, I acted like I was the victim. Made her look like she was the cold one. Well... the more religious I've become, the more I realize how much of a hypocrite I was. How much I was in the wrong. I don't deserve her. I never did. I wish I could take it all back. The guilt of who I was, that gonna linger in my heart. I don't know if it will ever leave. I want a family. I want a wife and children. But... I feel like I don't deserve that. Not after all the things I said and wrote. The lies, the accusations. I have sinned. And that shame has brought me down further than anything else in my life. My heart still feels heavy when I enter church. Right now, I'm just focused on passing nursing school. Still got three years ahead of me. I'm making friends, but... I don't pursue. I can't. I just exist now. Devastated by the realization, I was never the good guy who deserved to be loved. I just wanted to feel something, I guess. Now I feel I never will.
One thing I wish you talked more about is how much Dan Schneider hates nerds. All of the nerds in all of his shows are presented as either weird creeps with mental issues or completely unpopular social pariahs that deserve a world of pain constantly thrust on them, simply because they're nerds. Craig and Eric only exists to be hurt or taken advantage of by Drake. Josh and Freddie are both insane karma magnets that constantly get hurt or have their things ruined because they're nerds. Jasper in Henry danger is the same. Even Robbie in victorious when the show gets a revamp post season 1 changes from an obsessed creep, to someone who deserves to constantly lose in every scenario to the point we even have a throwaway line of his mom leaving the house because she can't stand him being a nerd.
Peter Parker’s a nerd and look where he got in life. Not all nerds are horrible, and terrible. You can be a nerd and still be a genuinely good person deep down. The only character type that doesn’t deserve love is the Neckbeard stereotype. The Neckbeard stereotype is the opposite of a nerd and are more unpleasant, disorganized, and less intelligent than nerds are. As long as you’re not hurting anyone, you can enjoy whatever you love doing. No one has the right to judge you for that. Also, having girls love men for their muscles and appearance alone is shallow and really stupid. Nerds do in fact deserve love because they are smart and are capable of learning from their mistakes, and are very intelligent. If all men were the same handsome looking and muscular guy, it wouldn’t just be boring, but there would be a lot of problems like there not being any form of medicine, inventions that help us in life, heck, even technology wouldn’t exist! They don’t get enough appreciation for that and the kind of person they are outside of being intelligent. Tails is a nerd and he’s one of the best video game characters of all time. Just because sitcoms portray them as weird and creepy doesn’t mean all nerds are, which is like saying that all girls are weak and helpless.
I see u did more biased towards bad side of nerds. Agreed there are bad nerds out there but bad boys are just bad as bad nerds. I do think women should choose what they want but some time women are shallow towards nerds guys are not bad
I don't know if nerds deserve love, but their depiction in media definitely doesn't do "nerdy interests" any favors. A widely heard statement in fandom spaces is that "X isn't really that bad, it's just that the fanbase sucks" and I feel like it holds true for the relationship between nerds as a collective and their interests, especially in this video where their interests include women.
Okay, i was going to say that griffin can one day sell his collection of little stuffed animals to make money but, when you mentioned that he was a scammer, went to prison and only sold his collection to pay off his debt it's clear that the creators of icarly... the updated version anyway, just simply don't like griffin and made him a terrible character on purpose.
As someone who has a nerdy fiance, respectfully but firmly, I rolled my eyes through most of what you said. For nerdy guys, even genuinely kind-hearted and respectful nerdy guys that any girl would be lucky to have, most girls do in fact never even look their way because of their status as a nerdy outcast or because of how they look. Even nerdy girls are like that as well. As you said that's people's right to date whoever they want. But I don't like to pretend the world isn't extremely shallow. Smart people, both men and women are never appreciated. Of course there are smart people who are complete jerks and don't necessarily deserve appreciation. But smart people who are also kind and down-to-Earth are so deserving of appreciation. It's the geniuses who literally change the world. The ones who (usually) end up making the world a better place. Doctors, scientists, engineers, etc. They create all kinds of new amazing things, they save lives. And how many of them probably have the same story of having never found love at all or having found love but it took practically forever for them to because only one special person was able to open their eyes to how amazing those people were and give them a shot. Or even there were ones like me who knew how amazing someone was from the very beginning and wasted no time in jumping in head first and fell in love with them hard and fast. So no. I disagree with you. Nerds do deserve more love. They deserve all the love in the world. You can acknowledge and happily call out the rotten apples in the bunch that are jerks and even predators like some of the guys on your list. But you can do that and still acknowledge that the nerds of the world as a whole deserve the best. If this rubs anyone the wrong way, I would apologize but I wouldn't really mean it.
As a nerd who’s always been called a good friend, really sweet, but has been friend zones for the past 17 years I have 2 words to says to you… Thank you
@@PatrickWaadah you're welcome, dear. Just saying what's right. I felt this way long before my fiance and I got together but our love has only made that feeling stronger. I'm sorry you've had a rough time in love. My fiance and I both know how you are probably feeling. He spent his whole life believing he would die alone and so did I. You'll find that special someone cause I can tell you're one of the good ones. But whatever you do, do not waste time on any girl who does not appreciate you or is only using you for something. Don't you dare fool yourself into thinking you can't have any better than that because you can. I fell into that trap and ended up being emotionally abused for 2 years. Trust me.🤝
@@PatrickWaadah "freind zoned".........😑😑😑😑 so somone calling you their freind is something wrong for you? "Freindzone" is not a real thing and it's defenitly not a dicrimination if u think ur entitled to women's bodies or affection just because ur " nice" you are literally showing the point that the person made in the video
Actually, it was Ryder not Dean on Victorious. I saw a vid where Matt Bennett called Robbie (a character he played) an unlikeable weirdo and criticized those who say that Robbie reminds people of themselves. I'm 50-50 with Robbie. I felt bad for him at times but he doesn't help himself. He's lucky Tori and Trina's Dad didn't shoot him (or simply arrest him). Yet I feel like he could have dated each other of the ladies. It seems like the nerds aren't much better than the jocks and that the ladies were as shallow as the guys. Granted, each of the Big Bang Theory guys outside of Raj got married and weren't Artie and Tina together in the end.
The classification of nerd and geek are not real classifications anymore. People who used to fall under these categories were probably neurodiverse, which is not a choice; it's the result of certain mental disorders and mental illnesses, and picking on someone for something they can't control is obviously not something people should do.
Fun fact a Nerd isn't just someone who is very into comics and games but is better defined someone who is very knowledgeable and geek out about their interests which means you can have: Sports nerds Video game nerds Manga and anime nerds Marvel and DC nerds Etc
Larp as portrayed in media is not even close to what it is over here. The costumes here are cool as heck... and you're definitely not allowed whatever they were wearing in the video. Also, you never see the 400 vs 400 open field battle matches, or the ones in some french castle ruin with torches on the walls and you waiting in the dark for the enemy by an open fire. And if you can't actually fight with your weapon you'd better study on those death scenes. You also never see the work the npcs do. Like, waiting in a bath of blood while it's hecking cold outside, just to surprise a bunch of players as you rise form the "water". Remember to hold your breath until you can hear them close by :). Or setting up a whole dungeon just for the group to walk past. I don't think the people writing about these things have every listened to more than half a sentence about the subject.
We all are passionate about things, sports (teams, players, flow of the game, cough CARDS are allowed but when nerds have cards oh no), fashion and more but when it's entertainment fans oh that's too far. Or instincts as their own factor. Some mediums and hobbies people just don't understand, then do and the next generation gets it then the next nerds of a different hobby, or other emotional/social expectations of things then how they look or feel or whatever. iCarly it's weird she does an internet show, that's niche till big now. Does random stuff on it. About different things, their hobbies but that's ok..... In Big Bang Theory Penny has a stuffed bear collection in one episode but not in the Time Machine episode Leonard chamges his mind to selliy, then continuing his passion for them. It varies. Also the 'can't see other guys the same way again' either was interesting but whether believable no idea just for the show situations well'. But yes manipulation, honesty and more do happen in such a case study of situations. Thtat and the girls nerdy or probably more normal personalities but got into nerdy jobs. People see things, use terms/labels, bend them, have new words, new meanings/secret languages words or body language. It's all a load of nonsense emotional/social garbage to say nonsense and make easy to pass on to others then think what they mean or care because anything simple, whatever social group, whatever expectations. Can't be too passionate or persistent, but they can about other things in life of higher importance or other hobbies uh huh..... Or other accepted things. The personality/desperation sure but the passionate for something but controlled not stereotypes of too passionate. Some people seek the validation others don't and have better things to do with their lives. I mean people are passionate/emotional in a conversation and need to calm down and not overthink it. Nerds have the knowledge and will either say it or store it. It can be education but also entertainment. Tough guys have the confidence, smooth talkers have their social skills. But nerds just focus on other passions or knowledge then social knowledge/creativity to convince, emotional intelligence to manipulate or be caring in certain ways or whatever. Other factors apply. Nerds can do a lot inside and not need people. People needing people can't balance themselves and need validation/emotions/whatever social nonsense to be convinced. Nerds can do it with other nerds or just do their own thing. Nerdy girls are a thing and get just as much questioning yet anyone can be a nerdy, sporty, social group connected, fashion, expert at many knowledge or creative based things. The norms/different types are there.
And what doesn’t get talked about enough is that the nerdy girl always has to change her looks and becomes super hot to get either with the hot guy or the other fellow nerdy friend she always gets the makeover. Meanwhile the nerd boy just stays who he is and still gets the “”perceived hot chick.
Yes, irl male nerds are pretty toxic and horrible. Especially to female nerds, unless you yourself are hot, you get dismissed pretty often. Even if you are good-looking, you're pretty much just sexualized. But, just like how all jocks aren't just meat head bullies. Some nerds can be pretty nice. Not all male nerds are socially awkward creeps that are incels. Most but not all. You just have to weed out the bad people and find the good ones. Just like what you have to do with everyone on this planet. But i just wish media would expand on the nerd character. Have some be girls, have some be poc, have some actually be likable. Like in actual nerd groups these days.
I’m a nerd (I prefer the term, geek, personally) and honestly these kinds of archetypes I feel have unnecessarily damaged so many peoples self esteem. Including mine. Especially since ‘getting girls’ was something I was able to achieve just by being me. But I was always so in my own head about it, especially when I was younger. I think these social ideas are subconsciously planted into us, and we end up living up to the stereotypes unintentionally out of fear of the stories we see becoming reality. Maybe not that far, lol. But I remember being absolutely AFRAID of coming across as any number of these stereotypes. Especially the nerdy creep, and nerdy loser. It made me severely self conscious about my approach to women, sometimes I come off too strong then others I just give up at the idea and never pursue. All because I was fighting (what I thought were) their preconceived notions about me.
7:04 you do realize this is fictional right, I myself maybe a nerd but I don’t personally collect anything, but I heavily doubt that anyone would be so self centered on a physical object, heck my older brother has a book collection of these graphic novels he likes but he never yells at me when I don’t wear gloves to read them
Leonard definitely has some issues with his relationship with Penny. But at the end of the day I did feel the two worked well together and we’re a pretty good match. I will never forgive the writers for having Leonard cheat on her though. That is massively out of character. Though I do feel the show is not only about nerds finding love. But also showing them as normal people. They can be just as flawed as anyone else and the challenge for them is to work past their flaws… or do what Bernadette did and never do that instead opting to be worse and worse to the point the guy who started out as the biggest creep in the world is the guy we feel bad for being tied to your verbally and emotionally abusive ass.
Obviously, yes...there are problems with any nerd in media. However, this is usually written by comedians and jocks on their perspective of what a nerd is and is not. A lot of nerds are left out of that process within those comedies. Nobody denies that some male nerds can be as horrible as some of the jock assholes. As a nerd, I know how terrible the jocks are. I know full well what flaws I have. I don't deny that younger me, especially made some mistakes in dating in part because of how socially awkward and shy I am. I have self awareness of my flaws. But, as I have matured into a middle aged adult, I have gotten a lot better when it comes to how I address someone I am interested in dating. It is all a matter of growing up and trying to do better. Nerds need help with social skills a lot of the time. Jocks often need to remember to seek intelligence and not just athletic abilities. But there are also nerdy women and other people, not just nerdy men. Steve Uerkel, improves a lot as the show goes on because of his relationship with Myra. Still a little clumsy and annoying, but one can see he is trying to be a decent person and only wants to be a good guy. He fails at it sometimes, but he keeps trying to do better. Eventually he figures out that there needs to be a balance between his ultra nerdy self and Stephon who is way more attractive to women, but is even worse than Eddie as a playa. He find confidence, but stays true to himself... allowing him to grow and mature. That results in Laura finally finding Steve Uerkel the guy she wants to be with. Screech from Saved By The Bell. He can come off a little stalkery towards Lisa Turtle, but one does know...he means no harm and unlike Zach Morris, actually has a good heart. He just isn't self aware of his behavior towards women. Sometimes it takes someone to point it out in order to see it. Revenge of the Nerds... nobody in their right mind can excuse a lot of their behavior. They take it too far. But, so do the jocks in the movie. It makes the women out to be a prize won in a claw machine instead of a person. It takes a balance of nerdy and normal to really get a person to have interest in you. Come across as the stereotype of nerd or jock with sexism thrown in..most women are just going to be turned off. But, Eddie...a guy who tends to attract a lot of women, never really sees that growth from high school playa to adult as he goes through college. He just continues to see women as a disposable play thing. I am just saying...there are flaws each way. The key is knowing which people are the ones who keep trying to get better vs the ones who never learn. Leonard progresses a lot as the show goes on in the Big Bang Theory, but still has his flaws. Howard goes from demented sex freak to a family man because he realized he was being a creep. Self awareness can help a lot as a person grows and matures. This goes for anyone who wants to date someone else. If you hope that they will like you back, show them who you are and why they should want to be with you. If they tell you to shove off, listen to it. This doesn't mean in a year or two you can't approach again and see if things have changed. Sometimes with enough time, feelings do change. But, be respectful of their boundaries, period. If they say no, move on. Take the time to get past those feelings and move on. If you need advice on what you are doing wrong, most people I think would give good advice on how to do better in the future when asking someone out. But some people are assholes and will just destroy you. You have to be prepared for that as well. Love, it has always been and always will be a complicated thing. But respect should be a constant thing no matter what.
Nerds deserve some love. They may not be fit or good looking, but at least they’re smart, funny and understanding of a girl’s feelings. Do most girls like the ones in these shows love to go out with some moody serious guy who turns out to be a really bad boyfriend in real life? I guess Abe Simpson was on to something about the concepts of love, “Women like jerks”.

Honestly, nowadays everyone has a "nerdy" hobby and these classifications don't really apply anymore

Actually the quote is
It's flirting, unless she finds you unattractive, then it's harassment.
As a "nerdy" girl I can tell you from first-hand experience that I've been treated with way more respect from guys who aren't into the shit I like.
It’s a weird double standard that the show has
I fully believe the writers flanderized him as a way to make Carly look less despicable and shallow. As it stood, she was just incredibly shallow.
Same I would’ve liked him even more
Honestly, yeah it could be taken as the writing but with the way it was written, Carly did not do him dirty.
@@boxingelfis1499 That is fist since it was very different than the other sides of him that were shown. I can understand being shocked by it.

You want to root for them because they're underdogs. Plain and simple.

@@thecabbageman1 trauma is all it takes for people online to like/forgive a character's actions, feels easy and unearned to me, the problem is not that they act shallow and mean spirited, they just never get the consequences of their actions.

Carly definitely does judge the nerd kind of characters, she did it to Freddie all of the time (no matter what the revival series is tryna gaslight us, she doesn't like them)
Did you forget that Freddie had a bad habit of watching her through his peephole?
The pear store episode was one of the most shocking things I’ve seen on icarly. The fact that the incident with Carly and that store employee aired Nickelodeon really makes me rethink everything that I’ve seen on TV as kid, and teenager because THAT was insane! 😧
Literally!!! Like and the laugh track behind the scene where he comes onto her as if it’s supposed to be funny is soooooo weird
I watched that episode when I was older since it was reairing on teennick or something and that shit made me scratch my head, genuinely concerning to have it be made so lightly. The whole ordeal felt out of character for Carly as a character too. Just awful vibes from that.
@@bobtheball5384 luckily I saw this episode recently and not years ago. But still it was insane for Nickelodeon to allow this
I'm surprised that the fact that they felt entitled or only felt attraction to the conventionally pretty girl wasn't brought into the conversation, the fact that they often are repulsed by girls with the same interests or hobbies as them because they aren't skinny or what is considered "hot" by the show's standards, reflecting that incels do tend to dislike a lot of nerdy girls for being Not Skinny™, or for being "fake fans" of whatever the topic of interest is, in high school I wasn't considered attractive in a lot of male eyes (no biggie because I'm gay) but the moment I became unavailable to them, I got more attention. I think the factor of attractiveness and availability are a big part of this topic, because it's very obvious in media that all of the "main" nerds are going after the hot and/or unavailable (either due to lack of interest, or already off the market) girlies
This just isn't a true at all
@@NebulaSon care to elaborate?
Men are allowed to have preferences?
Since when?
Wasnt the last 10 years everybody trying to shame men into dating people their not attracted towards?
Jesus, I do _not_ remember Robbie being that bad.
Sinjin was worse
@@flashfunk0373 He's more of a perv, but Robbie is more unhinged and delusional.
Jocks can be caring and respectful, just like nerds can be douchebags.
Just starting the video, but it's funny how the nerds only want the popular kids and think they are too good for other nerds.
The nerd stereotype has been disastrous for non traditionally masculine men
Artie also shames tina for faking her stutter because he "can't fake being disabled" but at the same time... she faked a stutter for over 10 years because she's shy and doesn't wanna talk to people. Anime makes better representation of what is like being a nerd and is treated better instead of discriminating them
The fact that majority of the examples of nerdy characters are boys/men brings up the point of misogyny to me. Even when ppl talk about the mistreatment of nerds, they always point to the nerdy guys, mostly the white cisgender heterosexual nerdy guys, and the women, lgbtq+, and bipoc nerds are always overlooked in mainstream media.
That's because the majority of nerds are straight white men
I figured you're overlooked classified instead as geeks.
Do you not see the amount of fanfiction the majority of women have made about their favorite media? The voice actresses, coders, artist? The developers? Writers?

I think the title is supposed to rage bait or something like that so others click on this video

@@sungod1384 Definitely. There's a difference between dedication and obsession.
Griffy wasn't a nerd, he was a bad boy with a sweet side and unfortunately that sweet side was plush toys.

No one is entitled to attention or affection, besides children from their parents (and even then, only to a healthy extent.)
Everyone has the right to their preferences; I'm a nerd and geek who's fine with not being everyone's preference.
What I'm not okay with is hurting others for having harmless interests.
It does not need to be that serious
So fictional needs don't deserve anything?
I honestly felt bad for Griffin in that episode of icarly, like imagine breaking up with someone all because they have weird hobbies
It is weird tho, it was very obvious that he was strangely attached to them even bordering on obsession
You thought Robbie was creepy, did you see Sinjin?
Let's be honest they both were
Everyone who is loving, kind, caring and thoughtful deserves love
2:17 this episode is fun but Carly hating Griffin’s hobby was a terrible plot line I absolutely hate
7:13 I wouldn’t have broken up with him. That actually would’ve made me like him more
2:22 something quirky like this would be celebrated on tik tok like “look how cute my bf is bc he’s secretly soft but also very handsome”
Yes nerds do deserve love like a lot of people. Why is this a debate?
I dunno
Yeah your explanation makes Carly sound a lot worse when it comes to dating. It sounds like she consistently decides who a person is and dumps them if that doesn't match. She doesn't bother to get to know any of them before pursuing and dating them.
She’s in middle school btw
I don’t like when I’m films & shows even the teachers are usually mean towards them
The second Penny stops drinking she's going to divorce Leonard. Deservedly. Then I think Leonard's going to get redpilled and become terrifying.
I never liked them together, especially once she got pregnant in the end. The second that baby is born I can see their marriage disintegrating.
And the implications of how she got pregnant (Leonard refusing to wear a condom with her, while she was drunk, when she's said several times she didn't want kids) are... icky.
I just hate that most storylines with nerds revolve around the girls just changing them from liking what they like and never having anything like that in their “normal home.”
Like the entire episode where Bernadette had an entire competition to get rid of Howard’s doctor who closet?
I refuse to fight back for 4 reasons:
You should fight back
On the other hand, as I was watching this, I felt so attacked!

Fictional ones no....real ones yes.
Everybody deserves love tbh it should be more about the person not what ppl are in to or what they looked like
I see u did more biased towards bad side of nerds. Agreed there are bad nerds out there but bad boys are just bad as bad nerds. I do think women should choose what they want but some time women are shallow towards nerds guys are not bad
I noticed that to as the video went on. Not all nerds are creeps just like not all jocks are

As a nerd who’s always been called a good friend, really sweet, but has been friend zones for the past 17 years I have 2 words to says to you…
Thank you
@@PatrickWaadah you're welcome, dear.
Maybe not dated, but they'd both probably think better of him. I just don't see either being interested in a better Robbie.
Love can not be deserved, it can only be given.
15:32 based Trina behavior tbh
The framing of this video is very strange
The classification of nerd and geek are not real classifications anymore. People who used to fall under these categories were probably neurodiverse, which is not a choice; it's the result of certain mental disorders and mental illnesses, and picking on someone for something they can't control is obviously not something people should do.
Fun fact a Nerd isn't just someone who is very into comics and games but is better defined someone who is very knowledgeable and geek out about their interests which means you can have:
Sports nerds
Video game nerds
Manga and anime nerds
Marvel and DC nerds
Etc
I’ve never seen a Morgan and Morgan sponsor a youtube video.. I thought it was some convoluted metaphor for the video’s theme at first
Yes, irl male nerds are pretty toxic and horrible.
Wait is it wrong to be socially awkward? And many female nerds are also toxic and mean towards male nerds.

Howard, Leonard and Robbie would probably end up having restraining orders against them, or would end up in prison with how creepy and pushy they were
Leonard definitely has some issues with his relationship with Penny.
