    All three of them did great in their own way, and they’re all amazing actresses, but, I’m admittedly biased because I’m a HUGE fan of hers, Sissy will always be Carrie to me, her eyes are the scariest part of the whole movie to me, I’ll never be able to get the memory out of my head. They all do a great job at capturing the character’s vulnerability and snapping at the horrible prank at the end

      People give the 2002 movie so much flack...its good to see that you appreciated Angela and her performance! I agree...she was not as innocent and child like as Sissy Spacek(love her portrayal for that reason), but Angela was so tortured that she literally was a walking FLINCH! It was so moving! She was so good at playing a bullied and tortured soul who blacks out when she snaps, killing everyone. I loved it!

    Personally, I love Carrie because it's a revenge, power fantasy. I think we all wish we had the ability to get back at everyone that wronged us. Maybe that's just me. I got picked on when I was younger for various reasons and sometimes, I wanted to more that get even. Sometimes I wanted to destroy everything, go somewhere else or wipe the slate clean. As an adult I understand the implications of this, and I still remember feeling it. You made me remember why I liked this movie. I empathize with what she is going through, even though it goes without saying that it's overkill.

      I have to say, I love that it showed her happily taking the revenge instead of making it seem accidental. It's both satisfying and horrific. Like the way the twins die. At the same time you're horrified but also going "right on!"

    Also something fairly small but that I still find really sad: at the prom in the 1976 version Miss Collins tells Carrie she looks beautiful, and she responds with basically "I know I don't but thanks anyway", even though she IS beautiful.

    • @BetterWithBob

      @@BetterWithBob I guess. To me, it just shows how non-existent her self-esteem must be. I also can't help but wonder if her mother always told her she was ugly so she wouldn't bother trying to get a boyfriend (since she thinks sex is evil for some reason.)

    I think Chloe is the closest version to the book. Even one of the old book covers looked eerily similar to Chloe as Carrie. She may not be chubby with acne (well Chloe did say she had acne while filming but they covered it up) but otherwise I think Chloe looks like how I pictured Carrie in the book.
    Personally my favourite movie version of Carrie is Angela, since as an autistic person, she has a lot of the same traits as me. I actually think all versions of the character show autistic traits, but 2002 Carrie seems to show the most out of them all

    The scene of Carrie bringing down boulders to destroy her house and Sue walking in on her right after she kills her mother were in Lawrence D. Cohen’s original script for the 1976 version, but were left out of the finished film for various reasons. The effects with the boulders raining down on the house didn’t work out due to technical problems and Brian De Palma cut Sue from Carrie’s death scene because he wanted it to be a more private, intimate moment between Carrie and Margaret.

    • @BetterWithBob
      @BetterWithBob  2 года назад +2

      There was also a planned prologue showing Carrie making stones rain on the house as a child, but the stones just looked like rain, so it was cut.

      @@BetterWithBob Yep. There were also a lot of scenes that developed Sue and Tommy’s characters that were filmed, but cut. Amy Irving was very upset when she saw the final cut. There were also earlier drafts that featured the entire town getting destroyed like in the novel and the ending featured Carrie transferring her powers to Sue before she died.

    • @theangelproductions
      @theangelproductions 3 года назад +3

      I actually think that 2013 Carrie didn't go nearly as far as she could have. Over a hundred people were laughing hysterically at her misery, yet she "only" killed the people directly involved in the prank or her bullying, or in the case of the camera guy, were recording it instead of intervening. Also, she doesn't destroy the town and even the fire in the school was put out (you can see white smoke coming from it with all of the survivors outside, when Sue sees Miss Desjardin) - whereas in the book, the school literally exploded. While the kills themselves were brutal, she definitely did less overall damage than the other versions

  • @theangelproductions
    @theangelproductions 3 года назад +24

    I don't think that book Carrie is a villain. By the time of the prom and town destruction, she had completely lost her mind. In my opinion, that's just as tragic as the film versions.
    I don't think she would have hurt anyone if she didn't have TK. Yes she had violent fantasies, but plenty of victims of bullying have violent fantasies that they would never actually act on. But again, that's just my opinion.

    • @BetterWithBob
      @BetterWithBob  3 года назад +10

      Interesting point. I see her as a tragic villain protagonist - since she does after all massacre a town full of people who did nothing to her and did know to an extent what she was doing. But that's the fun of the story; that we can all see these characters so many different ways and form our own interpretations of them :)

    • @theangelproductions

      @@BetterWithBob I think the crucial line in the book was when, after seeing someone getting electrocuted at prom, it said (in reference to Carrie) "conscious thought was lost." So personally, I don't think that Carrie knew the full extent of what she had done, and died before she had a chance to snap out of it and feel remorse (other than for her mother). I guess some could see that as villainous, but I see her more as tragic, period. Like a human tornado rather than a cold blooded murderer.

It was a genius ending including the screen that suddenly goes black and then starts the soothingly beautiful music again rips one's soul apart and forces everyone to think about the film over and over. It is brilliantly unforgettable. By the way, there is what is called "The "Long Version" of the music when Sue is dreaming (which can be found on RUclips) that displays the most beautiful flute soli sound imaginable - and then, of course you know the rest.

    I find the 1976 the most sympathetic, I guess because I like Spacek the most out of the three, and because she's the happiest at the prom, making what happens to her all the more cruel. I would agree the 2002 is the least villainous, as since she's loses conscious control of her self during the massacre, basically she's innocent. It's no different than if a truck driver passes out and runs into a crowd of people IMO.

    • @sweetheartmashupsbabe
      @sweetheartmashupsbabe 2 года назад +1

      Chloe had the most control, but also had the worst bullying. Not only did she get the blood and tampons thrown, but also her embarassing moment being recorded and projected, and the main reason for driving her over the edge was Tommy’s death. I found that really cool and it made the scene the most satisfying

  • @Gimodon
    @Gimodon 3 года назад +7

    I like the 1976 version best, I guess because she's the most sympathetic to me? Also, kind of off-topic but, I've heard people say the prom scene before the blood seems cheesy due to how happy it is (including Carrie crying tears of joy). I actually think it makes perfect sense considering the character: she's been abused and bullied all her life and has finally got what she wanted all along (to be loved and accepted). Plus, before then she probably never thought she would be the Prom Queen in a million years, so it makes sense to me she would be that happy about it.

    • @philspence3073
      @philspence3073 2 года назад +2

      I also think it's really interesting how each of the carrie's get their own story behind the prom destruction
      Sissy Spacek's version has a low-key snapping moment when she believes she is being ridiculed by her friends (Such as Rita Collins, Freida Jason and Helen Shyres) and doesn't kill anyone maliciously (Except Margaret, but Carrie was just trying to defend herself from her religious parent's abuse, and - let's be real, Mags threw the first punch)
      Angela Bettis' version retreats into her own mind and does everything on auto-pilot in a state of catatonia which means that she never did anything on purpose (Things like the fire in the Gym, unscrewing the fire hydrants and destroying the town) The only thing you could realistically say that Carrie did on purpose was Killing Chris and Billy, but they deserved it.
      Chloe Grace-Morett's Carrie snaps, similarly to Spacek's, but unlike the latter who does so unintentionally, the former knows exactly what she's doing and is the most violent of the three renditions as she deliberately causes all the damage (Illustrated by how the actress moves in the scene)

    Awesome summary and comparison of the adaptations! And pretty much agree with you with Carrie from the 2002 version being the most sympathetic.
    Usually I place the 1976 version at first place, but there are elements of the other adaptations that are better than the original, such as how Sue's regret and compassion is being progressed and confronting Carrie at the end.
    For me, the 2002 Carrie portrays better being the outcast and why she is not liked by her peers, and this one is who you can identify more with, although I didn't like her being in trance during the massacre, the 2013 prom version was better for me.
    I didn't like much the Tommy of the 2002 version as well as the musical, Tommy doesn't seem genuine and to have that kindess that you see in the other adaptations and the novel.
    In the end, for me, the novel top all the adaptations, is way better in portraying all the miserable life of Carrie, the abuse at home, her social awkwardness, clumsiness and why all kids at school find her repulsive, is better in the book, and the prom sequence is way better in the book, and you can see why she does what she does, is realistic, as it has happened in real life (minus the telekinetic part)

    I imagine sissy or Chloe are probably a lot different in reality ie popular and beauties and were probably queen bees/alphas(in a good way hopefully) Angela meanwhile has a closer vibe to an outsider but considering they're all 3 Hollywood actors u have to be popular and beautiful to get anywhere in Hollywood lol🙄🤦🏻‍♂️🤷

    The first Carrie was released in 1976 and the book was published in 1974. That’s not well-over 50 years.
