I’m with Liz: I’m glad Biden is our president.
As a german, I'm horrified about what's going on in the US. After 1945, the sentiment of a german mindset was "never again". And I - as well as the german majority - am deeply disturbed about the current fascist trends that can be observed in the US. A country, we - proudly until now - deemed as a founding father of modern Germany.
I'd be horrified, too. Some Arabs joined the Allies to defeat the Nazis during that period.
Unfortunately, this strain has always existed in the US. James Whitman's "Hitler’s American Model" is a good starting point for exploring how fascistic/racist has always pulsed through the country's veins. Indeed, in the 1930s, Hitler was popular with a sizable portion of the US public.

@@charleskramer7062 In the 1930s Hitler’s fascism was easily accepted by lots of folks listening to Father Coughlin (out of Chicago) who publicized the old canard of Jews responsible for the death of Jesus and therefore a “people apart.” Ironically, in Germany Nazism was intentionally stripped away from the Catholic religion because Hitler’s Germany had to be Protestant- not simply Christian. In the US that wasn’t the case and the philosophy of blaming, isolating and hating others for whatever your problem was also easily included of POC.
Perhaps the most difficult of all Christianity’s imperatives is to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” It’s for sure that Ron DeSantis and the men shouting “Sieg Heil” are neither Christian nor loving.
We are not going to let these cowards win at anything, period, never again you pos cowards.
As an independent, I always had a level of respect for the Republican Party, until trump. Now with Gaetz, Cruz, Bobert and the rest of the clown show…it’s a lost party.

I just watched Ruth Ben-Ghiat. She's written a book called Strongmen. She brilliantly depicted the several stages of fascism that the States are experiencing. A must read.

We lost family in the camps had one survivor that my father found through the Red Cross. I was old enough to understand some of what I heard. My mother never let me speak Yiddish or German I had to be American. I grew to understand how frightened she was and I kept telling her this would never happen here. I was wrong

My old neighbour, a Canadian Battle of Britain pilot, stayed in Europe immediately after the war, and was shown through one of the camps.

Democracy is unsustainable by nature. The only economic system available to a society that wants to be a democracy is free market capitalism. This system creates wealth inequality that becomes more and more polarized the more "free" the economy is (think of the Industrial Revolution). Wealth inequality creates an unequal social power dynamic. Once this dynamic is established, equal opportunity ceases to exist. The separation of government from the ultra wealthy ceases to exist. Democracy ceases to exist.
Democracy is for women and homosexuals.

Angers me so much. My husband and I had one of the many small businesses that were destroyed due to predatory practices of banks and the 2008 crash. One thing that particularly annoyed me was how the town assessed our property for tax purposes versus what the bank valued it at. And then when we lost it due to bankruptcy, they couldn't even sell it for years. It went to auction and showed its real worth. The town was/is also guilty of gouging.
They all are greedy !

One of my pet peeves about that same crash, where I lost my mortgaged farm & engineering career (mortgage because of the increasingly impossible payments & the career due to the crash), that- unlike the pandemic bailouts- they only bailed out the same ruthlessly greedy corporate ruling class that lobbied for the same deregulations that lead to the financial risks taken resulting in the crash. Sure, in both cases, the bailouts made the rich people richer while essentially leaving the masses to starve, we at least got token payments to help string out that starvation a little longer. It is also funny how when I signed that mortgage in '03, it was valued at $80k, then- after installing all new appliances, it was valued at $48k in '08 when it was foreclosed (after that, the last load when moving out took those appliances including the new furnace & water heater), then the house sold for $20k at auction. In comparison, when I signed on the mortgage I owed $48k. when I lost it they said I owed $60k after all the refinancing.

They forget that anyone can find those books on the internet. Different times. When books are forbidden it is like an advertisement for them to be read.
DeSantis is not legally permitted to ban school books. To those living in Florida purchase Jodi Picoult's The Story Teller book privately, if you would like to read it, and be sure to vote DeSantis out of office the first chance you get.

How historians described german Nazies: the Nazis were not smart people. They were more ruthless than they were intellectual. They did learn to use smart people either through intimidation or by appealing to their ambition or greed. In general, their message did not appeal to intellectuals but to the mob. Working people who had lost much in the Great Depression and were looking to place blame. These were the people who made up the bulk of the Nazi's early followers. The Nazis betrayed these followers in order to receive favours from the government and military. A classic trading-up move (see Sturmabteilung and night of the long knives ). Once inside the government through appointment, the Nazis seized power, but they never won a national election. They were never a majority political party. They were not voted into national office. They were always a minority party, that used their minority political support along with their propensity for violence to seize power.

Rachel’s opinion about more women in politics was a great one too. So many double standards. As a woman who doesn’t think about my gender until I’m demeaned, I’m happy to move that convo forward.
I believe in biological women and equality. Democrats want to replace women with men in every aspect of their lives. That should infuriate all women.
As a woman who has worked in engineering and managing engineers, it's tough out there.

Had a lot of crooks in 2008 been forced to trade pinstripes for prison stripes and wingtips for prison slides, the current crop of greedy bankers would never have happened.
