So I went with the narrative and asked for an extension on a project because I was struggling to make ends meat (technically I was struggling but it was because I spent all my money shopping and drinking and needed to work overtime haha) and was granted said extension. No regrets 😂

I dont really find Albie to be so kind and pure, he wanted something from her like all the other men in her life did. His 'kindness' was more an act of rebelling against his father's actions. After his speech about the Godfather movies being a male fantasy that he hates, I saw him as a virtue-signalling boy who wanted to rebel against his dad. What albie got out of his relationship with Lucia was a sense that he was morally superior. He said he was attracted to wounded birds, you have to wonder if Albie would still be as kind to Lucia after she became successful with her store. Also Lucia doesn't seem interested in Albie at all she just noticed what kind of woman he liked and played into it. She was never able to be herself around him so it doesn't feel like she fell for him.

He is just another toxic dude pretending to be kind. His view of women is in what they can do for him not seeing them a real people who deserve honesty and autonomy.

@@graciegg24 I agree, but it isnt that easy. The show showed him on a turning point. Will he "choose" the same way his father and grandfather already went or will he be able to hold on to his kindness etc.. It´s the same with Harper and Ethan. They found themself in a complex situation with Cameron and Daphne. At least Harper despised the action of the other couple and Albie despised his dad for his action. It was not one big decision, one big act. One little step after the other they got currupted in the end.

He got played so freakin’ HARD, but that’s the consequence of thinking you can buy someone love & loyalty with money. He didn’t love her either… he was simply following in the footsteps of his father & grandfather’s womanizing lifestyle, without seeing the hypocrisy of his own actions.

Exactly. Thats why I dont feel sorry for him, because he got what he wanted. Well, the thing is, if he believes he loves her like he's the protagonist of some modern-day fairytale then it's the closest thing he has to actually experiencing love. It's therefore a true sentiment, despite his ignorance regarding how it came to be.
Sure, true love is selfless and is not transactional, but he doesn't quite know how to apply that to a real-life scenario, let alone realize that it takes time for something selfish, such as desire (For sex, companionship, validation, and acceptance as a partner), to turn into the real deal.

Albie isn’t that innocent, he was literally trying to buy her. If he wanted to “free” her, he would have given the money no strings attached but it seemed it wasn’t the case. He might not realize it now but he’s just like his family.

    • @sapaulgoogdmen9542
      @sapaulgoogdmen9542 Год назад +20

Exactly!!! At any point in time Albie could’ve said “I don’t wanna be part of your exploitation in that way. Here is how much it would be if we spent the night together, just do whatever you want.
He didn’t do that. He likes the feeling of being around her and understood that she only did that for the money. Even after he saw the “mafia” guy he could’ve said “I didn’t know it was that serious. As a concern for your safety and my family’s, here’s enough money to move away from here” and done the devils deal with his dad for that.
Albie wanted to in a way “have” Lucia. As long as he paid her she’d keep pretending his “I’m a nice guy” thing isn’t transparent that it’s “I’m a nice guy if I’m interested in you and think I have a chance” as his concerns for Porscha quickly disappeared when he found someone new.
At first I was rooting for Albie. He seemed like a great guy all the way up until he tried to pretend that it wasn’t that he didn’t wanna exploit her more when in reality he just didn’t have his own money to keep paying her. He wears the trappings and uses the language of a progressive feminist guy but when it came down to it when given the ability to help a woman get out of a potentially dangerous situation he wouldn’t do it unless he could play the hero that kisses the girl.

The morning she left him for good, you can see he was actually awake and opened his eyes as soon as the door closed; he knew she was gone forever but didn’t even care . The worst part about him is that he realizes he’s a young, naïve, rich simp but it doesn’t bother him since he figures he has helped a less fortunate person out, in this case with daddy‘s money.

It’s funny because Albie told his dad you cannot just pay people for their love but this is exactly what he tried to do to Lucia. I feel that Lucia liked Albie, but not enough to drop her life. Great video! Personally, I hope she didn't care about him. Dude sold out his own mother for a woman he just met. Just like his father chasing instant gratification. Sorry, but he isn't a nice guy. The men in that family treat women as commodities that only deserve protection when they serve them. He is just another version of his father. Though I suppose that is the point, to show that Albie presents as benign and as the sweet "nice guy" who is morally superior, but what he is doing is just a less obvious version of what his father is doing. At least his father knows what he is doing is wrong.

This is slightly off topic from this video commentary but I realized Lucia is parallel to season 1’s Belinda the massage therapist. Both Belinda and Lucia had dreams of starting their own businesses but were short of cash. Both are confronted with rich and powerful people who want something from them. However, in season one, the rich and powerful Tanya takes advantage of the poor and powerless Belinda, while Lucia manages to flip the script and take advantage of the rich (Albie and his family) in her small way. It was a bit of vindication on behalf of the working class.
TBH though, I have a feeling Lucia won’t follow through in her dream of opening up her own shop and leaving the sex work industry… once you get into it, it becomes extremely difficult to get out of it, and and I doubt 50k euros is enough to completely leave the business. Season 2 had a more uplifting ending than season 1, but it still left me with a twinge of sadness.

Albie is a “nice guy” in a way to. He doesn’t lash out at rejection but when he had a few conversations with a girl he was walking up to interrupt her conversation with another guy. When he sees Lucia’s “pimp” I saw that as Albie seeing competition and feeling emasculated by him. Which is why he felt more inclined to pay the money.
Albie saw in Lucia an opportunity to be the hero nice guy that gets the girl. He doesn’t care about who the girl is or her actual situation, he just wants to be the hero who gets the girl. If he wanted to just give her money to get out of the situation then he could’ve but he wanted to keep sleeping with her. I think Lucia played a part in keeping him in the mindset and conforming to the role but in my opinion Albie didn’t truly care for Lucia and Lucia didn’t care about Albie.

I'm with you! I was team Lucia. I didn't even want to consider that she was playing Albie. There are two reasons for that, I believe. Maybe I'm a little like Albie. AND as much as I loved Lucia as a character and believe Simona Tabasco is a fine actress, something was a little off there, probably a red herring on Mike White's part. Despite clues in the plot, Lucia's facial expressions were too sincere, not enough side glances or subtle acting techniques to indicate that maybe something's not as it appeared. Also. I do believe, like all of White's characters, she is complex. She's clearly capable of tenderness and love but has a determination to rise above her circumstances. That was apparently her driving force.
When all is said, I was disappointed but oddly remain team Lucia. The upbeat music at the end, her joy walking down the street with her friend, the GREAT dress, the glance in her dream shop window, showed she's probably going to get ahead, unlike Kai and Belinda in White Lotus season one. Those disappointments were heartbreaking. Also, I think her relationship with Albie will leave a lasting, albeit subtle mark on her psyche. And, in the end, Albie's family really didn't take much of a hit. Albie helped reunite his parents, hopefully he learned a lesson, and Portia was at the airport to soften the blow. I'm usually not the ends justify the means kinda gal, but hey, it's just TV. 🙂

That maybe he actually believed that his father deserved a second chance with his mother? I think the fact that he spoke with his mother about it BEFORE his father agreed to giving the money confirms this. Why wouldn't he have waited until the money was transferred, if it was purely transactional and done out of indifference toward his mother's feelings? To everyone in these comments calling this "blackmail," yeah no. That's not how blackmail works. You don't do the thing BEFORE getting what you demanded. That makes no sense.
As for Lucia's character, I can't say I'm surprised by the comments here. This is YT after all, the comments are always full of misogynistic, "all women are evil gold diggers" incel-types, so of course they are incapable of seeing the MASSIVE grey areas when it comes to Albie and Lucia. I guess if you're autistic enough to be incapable of interpreting her facial expressions, you'd miss the clear regret and guilt that she showed. I believe she 100% used Albie, and knew she was using him the entire time, but I also believe that she did feel SOMETHING for him, and in the end did feel some remorse for how she treated him. I think that was pretty goddamn obvious by the 1000x forlorn looks she gave him during the last couple of episodes.

However, the power/wealth difference needs to be focused on more here. Both Albie and Lucia knew his family's money would change her life and barely make an impact on his, so it's not this big "horrible" thing that she played him. It was justice in a way. Still, I think she felt some tenderness from and for him that might show her other ways to be in relationship. Maybe that's what she felt surprised by, and also sad to leave.

And that’s exactly what happened- she was the karma for the weird way Albie thinks of women. She sees through his bs. And Lucia is not self absorbed, she just found out how to navigate a disgusting society. However, I think that they are still actually a great match for each other and part of me wishes they do still end up together lol. Even if it’s kinda toxic lmao. Lucia needs someone like Albie that will support her even through ridiculous situations she gets herself into because she’s facing a tough world. In the end he really can be a “good guy” (lol) - for someone like Lucia. She deserves someone that can drum up $50K for her at the drop of a dime. For someone like Portia, who is shallow and self absorbed, that would just be a nightmare relationship. Two rotten personalities together. Albie would become nasty, disgusting, and abusive when he projects a bunch of weird ideas onto Portia, who would in turn retaliate. Portia doesn’t need “saving” or support. She needs an attitude adjustment and a reality check, which she kinda got in the end.

Some of the Albie haters puzzle me. Was he flawed? Yes, pretty much like every single character ever. The level of projection on to him by some of these comments are like no other 😂😂😂

No she didn't care about him. She gave him services and she got paid by scamming him. All other theories are BS

No she DID NOT. I think she realized that he was gonna be an easy mark. Not only do I think did she not care about him, I feel she resented him on a deep level because weather he wanted to or not, Albie was a representation of all these foreign men that have used and exploited her. That’s the ironic part, is that for all his high and mighty progressive ideals, Albie was no better then any of the men that came before him. There may have been some acknowledgment of his kindness. Albie was just as bad as his dad and grandfather. I’d say worse. Albie was very codependent and I personally don’t ascribe any virtue to him, ultimately he used his family relationship to extort money from his dad. In a show full of people that show their darker side, I actually think he was one of the worst.

She cared about him and was torn about it. But in the end she chose money. Her and Mia in 30 years are the Quentin and the gays. This wasn't a feel good story about the two Italians. They both crossed some personal lines and a no regrets. Do you think Quentin and the gays were ok with murder for money 30 years ago?

yes - Mia was worse than Lucia IMO - ruthless. She did not care about that man she nearly killed, or that she took his gig. I was married to a musician. They are truly the worse. Heard it all.

I think when she first met him she enjoyed being with a nice guy and just talking to him normally as a typical young girl meets a boy scenario hence why she didn’t care much about not being paid. But I think the opportunity that arose to change her life around was too big a chance to resist and hence went forward with the scam but we still see genuine moments of conflict within her. I think also it probably sits better with her that she knows the money will be coming from his dad.

Nah, she saw a good mark and did her thing. Maybe from the stand point of "oh, you naive little boy, I guess I'll have to educate you on the world", but that's about it.

I don't think many of us think she really liked albie
You read this the same way as albie's character I think, she didn't like him she was running a scam and might feel sorry sometimes for the people she scams or she also feels bad for herself as well as she has to sleep with people she does not want most of the times

She knew she could get away with the plan because the father didn't tell his son that he slept with her. If they had gotten together the truth would've came to light...so take money and run

Yeh - you could see the wheels spinning when he came to her. After that she had him - she could have blackmailed him, and maybe that is why he gave her the money. His son learned a lesson, had a good time, she never told etc.

It was a grift. Plan and simple. Maybe she felt a bit of remorse from it bc he was sweet. But she had a plan and executed with the goal of making as much money as possible. She used Albies hero complex and naïveté against him. She got her male friend to act the part to feed into the lie of her escaping her “pimp”. A good grifter is a good actor. They make you think they care about you when in their mind, it’s all calculated. Every face of concern, action of love, regretful looks, etc was all part of the act. It’s what actors call method acting. She was acting a character so much even the audience thought “maybe she does care about him”. Reality, he was a job.
