My clutch is letting out 1/4 of the way out its almost but it's not slipping at all do I have too take the tranny completely out like I did before because don't think I can get it slid over its a 2003 cavalier

boi _ boi _ rough idling could be a few things, when the car is warmed up and stationary, the revs should stay around 1000rpms, any lower than that you’ll get a bumpy idle, if your car is turbo’d, try locate the bov or diverter valve and make sure the spring is tight enough so it doesn’t open when decelerating

First timer here. 14 hours in, about to pry off tranny but gotta figure a way to support it since I have no transmission jack. There were lots of bolts that were in tight spots I had to get out plus the subframe . :S
The job is extremely easy. And $600 for your clutch? Wtf? Who are you buying it from? That better be an upgraded clutch, cause there is no way an OEM clutch will cost you $600. I have a 2012, and that clutch is about $200 i also have an 85 MR2, and that clutch is about $150.
Sometimes, it’s just easier to leave it to a mechanic. Drop it off and it’s done In a day, and you still get your weekend to spend with family. Do an overtime shift or flog some crap from around the house online to pay for it.
@@mattevans1643 $600 for a clutch job is a steal. The parts are probably only $150. That's 450 for labor. Most shops charge $1,000 for the job at least. Some up to $1500.

One guy watched this video, his car did exactly the same (revs come up put the car won't go). so he bought a new clutch kit and took out the gearbox and then realized that an automatic gearbox doesn't even have clutch. :D
I don't know what he said exactly, but it is his first car that has an automatic transmission, he probably was thinking that automatics also had clutches and Yaris models came with automatic and manual tranys, so he bough a clutch setup
Scotty, I just wanted to say thanks for the video. My car needed a new clutch, and your video was more accurate than the instructions in the manual. It recommended dropping the subframe, which would have taken a LOT longer. I still had PLENTY of room to do the clutch from the top without removing the subframe. Thanks again! - Mike

I had to do this with just a breaker bar, 5 sockets, a clutch aligner, a jack and axle stands, a set of open ended spanners and a ratchet. I just used some old hose pipe to refil the gearbox. You make this look way easier than it was for me haha
You are a genius doing that complicated job in your back yard on jack stands. What about the torque standards ? the wrench down pattern ? the shims and spacing tolerances? In any case you did it made it looks easy and I thank you.

Just try to do it yourself. Dont be afraid. I've learned and done a lot of things I thought were impossible for me to do. I've saved a lot of money and I know more about car repairs now.
Only thing I've done with a car before was change oil. Did a whole clutch kit with this video as reference. Only $95 and 3 hours with the right tools. Could probably do it in an HR next time. Thnx Scotty 👍😁👍
My throw bearing starting acting up Yesterday and I have a 2003 honda civic si. This one place I called alone tried to charge me 789.95 in labor alone. Hey scotty, Remember me from a while ago?. I just wonted tell you that the racing clutch I put in my car really works for me. I don't stall it much and it helps on a hill around my home town. It catch's faster, so I don't have worry bout hitting other cars behind me on a hill. keep up good work n I love your lil shows on here
It is. On my daily driver, you remove 3 engine mounts, unbolt the slave cylinder, remove the battery, remove the air cleaner assembly, disconnect the shift linkage, unbolt the starter, remove the tie rods and CV axles. So yes, it's a pain in the ass.
GreatYue this was done on a what appeared to be a 98-02 Honda Accord EX. The trans is fairly easy to get too. What amazed me about Scotty was he did most of the work from the top, I do it under the car.
I've changed 2 clutches on 2 different vehicles and, while it looks intimidating, it's not that difficult in real life. The first clutch I replaced was a 1982 Datsun 210 station wagon. That was ridiculously easy. Just had to disconnect the drive shaft (most Japanese cars prior to the mid 80s were rwd) a couple of wires, and the tanny itself. Whole process, from start to finish, took 5 hours. Transmission only weighed about 70lb dry. I could lift it with my bare hands but still used a floor jack and Jack stands for clearance. Unluckily for me, a garbage truck backed into that car two weeks later, totaling it. God I miss that car. (On a side note, if you want a car that is super easy to work on, Buy an older rear wheel drive Japanese or European Vehicle. Small engines and massive engine Bays with few wires, hoses, Etc. Everything is very easy to reach.) Second clutch I did was on a 1991 Mercury Tracer, basically a rebadged Ford Escort. It took me a couple of days to do it because it is front-wheel drive and everything is cramped in the engine bay and I had to take more stuff out of the way to get to it. But I still did successfully. The most difficult part was getting the transmission to fit back on to the engine
I had a 75 Chevy luv and did the clutch to it. But when i had pulled the transmission out it had an “ inner bearing” that i didn’t know was there and had a heck of time putting it back together. My dad had to help me take it all apart and borrowed a pulley to take out that inner bearing and replace it with a new one😂👍thank God he showed up to help👍

I have that exact same car. I was worried about a $1000 bill when I burn out my clutch (I am just learning how to drive stick) but you make it look so easy I will do it myself. Funny part is that I bought this car cause I had the automatic version and I know that the car is easy to fix . I have done axles tons of times and they are very easy.

Scotty MSU lol when I first started tinkering around with my car. I did the spark plugs. Had no clue where they were on my old 95 Mercedes, I was pulling on the fuel injector rails thinking the spark plugs were under the injectors lmao and taking bolts off the engine not knowing wtf is going on. Till one day, under the black cover just a few inches to the side of the rails, where the spark plugs lived, I found them. Took me 1 day to figure that out and the second day to actually finish it, should’ve been a like a 30 min, (maybe a tad bit more, since mine was a v8 and there was little room to get to the back part where the plugs were). But then again, I bought the cheapest tiniest socket wrench set for 15 bucks outside my local junkyard, and the set was garbage to begin with and it was just hard not having proper tools. I was mad but relieve and felt proud I did something. Just recently I changed my starter, took me two day too, but since I got a new job, wasn’t able to have time to change it, was about 3hrs, only cause I didn’t have 10mm hex bit, and again, there was no room for my large hand to fit. Point is, I was just glad to get it done hahah😂
Mine just went out,I could just take it to the shop and give them $1500-2000 to do the job or I could spend $200 and do it myself following Scotty’s video.I’m smart enough to know if I tried to do it myself I’ll end up paying the mechanic the $1500-$2000 to replace the clutch and another $1000 from the other stuff I’ll break trying to do it myself.

I am going to state the blatantly obvious, but often overlooked tidbit of common sense: Don't EVER try doing this unless you're extremely advanced with cars. Yes, it is quite expensive to be done at a mechanic, but you will have absolutely no car if you screw something up, or just plain can't get things back together. Dropping a transmission is no novice task, getting it back into place is EXTREMELY difficult, this video doesn't show just how hard it can be. There are certain things that are absolutely worth paying a big price for to get them done at a shop, unless you're extremely proficient at cars, this isn't something you want to be getting into. I know this is all common sense, but I can't even count how many people I've seen fuck up their cars trying to do very difficult repairs by themselves, all because they didn't want to pay to get it done right.
***** I'm not telling people to depend on shops for everything, I'm a person who does nearly all of my own car work, and learned that way. I'm just telling people to be very careful what they get into, make sure they know what they're doing, or have someone around who is. Like I said, I have seen so many people fuck up their cars because they were trying to do something way other their head. Say you need your car for work, if you can't get your transmission back into place, you aren't going anywhere. It's definitely a great idea to work on your own cars, saves a ton of money, just make sure you have the necessary experience before delving into the advanced stuff, that's my whole theme here.
***** Hey in that case you had nothing to lose, I'd say go for it. It absolutely depends on the car, no doubt about it. For instance, I think anyone could agree a RWD is much easier to change a clutch in over a FWD or especially an AWD. My point is for people to always make sure they do their research beforehand; you don't want to jump in to suddenly realize you're absolutely screwed, have no idea what you're doing, and now have an inoperable vehicle that you cannot get back together. When that occurs, there are only two likely outcomes: They just put things back together despite being lost, and wind up screwing up their car, or they have no car to drive until they tow it to a shop, or find someone who can help them.
***** In my personal opinion, I think the best idea is to have someone around who knows their stuff to shadow you. Everyone knows of someone who is good with cars, most people will be happy to help you if you respect them, show genuine interest, and most importantly listen to them. My neighbor was a mechanic, I began going over there on weekends when he did side work. As a condition for him to teach me, I offered to assist doing all the "bitch work" so to speak, grabbing and returning tools, collecting trash, disposing of fluids, you name it. I figured that was fair, considering he was taking his personal time to sit and explain things to me. In a very short period of time I went from not knowing how to change oil (I was never taught anything about cars in my family, every problem was take it to the shop) to changing my own brake pads, struts, fuel filter etc. If you gain a mechanic's respect, they will eventually usually let you bring your car over and work on it, and you always have them there for when you run into a jam. You then have the ability to be a go getter and dive into projects, with peace of mind knowing you have someone there to help. Manuals can be a great tool, I just personally think nothing beats learning hands on from another mechanic. Jumping into projects is great, just make sure you have someone available to assist you if you run into a jam. Eventually you can pretty much become self sufficient, but until then it is wise to err on the safe side.
***** Na, my father could barely tie his own shoelaces, he played bridge and won money playing the ponies. My grandfather, his father, was the mechanic. One of those skip a generation things.
How on earth can you slip a clutch alignment tool in with the transmission input shaft in the way? You did not address supporting the engine ether. I wonder how many weekend warriors have torn their hair out over this one. And what is with all those rocks on the ground surrounding your work area;-)? No offense intended Scotty! I just put a clutch in a 1988 honda civic and now it wont shift, did I accidentally put the clutch in backwards? or could it be a faulty throwout bearing
start over - you know the procedure now so it will be quicker second time through - take it all back apart and check it's the right way round - when its opened up give the flywheel a good look over make sure it's not blued anywhere or scratched badly - also make sure you rebuilt the each assembly correctly and keep checking here for an answer from someone more qualified than me... im no mechanic... hope you get sorted

Hi Scotty, 1) What's the difference between a drive shaft, CV joint, and axle? 2) Is there a specific side of the clutch disc that should face the transmission (and the other side facing the engine), or does that not matter? 3) Is it only with your jack that held your transmission up? If so, how did you balance it to prevent it from falling off? 4) Where in your video did you use tie rod separator? It was one of your "Things used in this video".

Just another repair! I’d have someone on standby for that who had done one before, I know you have to lift the engine a few inches on a vw engine. All the same if it’s old you might as well take a chance. I did a timing belt/pumpearly in my amateur mechanic career, I reasoned if I trash the engine I haven’t lost much the van only cost 900 €. It was fiddly but I got it all lined up ok going carefully and gained in confidence. I think I would do it with thorough preparation, it kind of doesn’t make sense to run old vans if you won’t take a chance on doing repairs. Scotty the great can do man👍

Jesus u make it look so easy. Idk how you removed the old clutch and installed the new one with that little bit of room. I have done this job as well before and was not as painless as you make it look. You sir!!!...........are Talented. 👍
This took 3 evenings on my car. I would suggest you have a piece of paper to tape the bolts/nuts/screws to and label them. It's very easy to forget where they go. Use a torque wrench for the big nuts on the hub if you don't have an electric drill with adjustable torque. Removing the gearbox from the car takes more time, but it makes it a lot easier to work on (fewer tight spaces). If you do remove the gearbox, you also need to take out the speed cable, and unhook the shifting clips.

Scotty, on my civic the clutch pedal would make a popping noise one day and the next day the shifter is super stiff and hard to put it in gear. Still turns on fine and still engages but the engagement point is lower and hasnt lost any fluid

I’ve done it without a lift. I tied a pulley to a hook in a joist in my garage and it helped lifting a transmission out.

I just wanted to say thanks for the video. My car needed a new clutch, and your video was more accurate than the instructions in the manual. It recommended dropping the subframe, which would have taken a LOT longer. I still had PLENTY of room to do the clutch from the top without removing the subframe. Thanks again!

I had to do this with just a breaker bar, 5 sockets, a clutch aligner, a jack and axle stands, a set of open ended spanners and a ratchet. I just used some old hose pipe to refil the gearbox. You make this look way easier than it was for me haha
You are a genius doing that complicated job in your back yard on jack stands.
What about the torque standards ? the wrench down pattern ? the shims and spacing tolerances?

Just try to do it yourself. Dont be afraid. I've learned and done a lot of things I thought were impossible for me to do. I've saved a lot of money and I know more about car repairs now.
Only thing I've done with a car before was change oil. Did a whole clutch kit with this video as reference. Only $95 and 3 hours with the right tools. Could probably do it in an HR next time. Thnx Scotty 👍😁👍

It catch's faster, so I don't have worry bout hitting other cars behind me on a hill. keep up good work n I love your lil shows on here
it's fun getting all the bolts off, I personally find room to get one off, then turn the flywheel as I work so I can access all the other ones.

It is. On my daily driver, you remove 3 engine mounts, unbolt the slave cylinder, remove the battery, remove the air cleaner assembly, disconnect the shift linkage, unbolt the starter, remove the tie rods and CV axles. So yes, it's a pain in the ass.
GreatYue this was done on a what appeared to be a 98-02 Honda Accord EX.
The trans is fairly easy to get too. What amazed me about Scotty was he did most of the work from the top, I do it under the car.
I've changed 2 clutches on 2 different vehicles and, while it looks intimidating, it's not that difficult in real life. The first clutch I replaced was a 1982 Datsun 210 station wagon. That was ridiculously easy. Just had to disconnect the drive shaft (most Japanese cars prior to the mid 80s were rwd) a couple of wires, and the tanny itself. Whole process, from start to finish, took 5 hours. Transmission only weighed about 70lb dry. I could lift it with my bare hands but still used a floor jack and Jack stands for clearance. Unluckily for me, a garbage truck backed into that car two weeks later, totaling it. God I miss that car. (On a side note, if you want a car that is super easy to work on, Buy an older rear wheel drive Japanese or European Vehicle. Small engines and massive engine Bays with few wires, hoses, Etc. Everything is very easy to reach.) Second clutch I did was on a 1991 Mercury Tracer, basically a rebadged Ford Escort. It took me a couple of days to do it because it is front-wheel drive and everything is cramped in the engine bay and I had to take more stuff out of the way to get to it. But I still did successfully. The most difficult part was getting the transmission to fit back on to the engine

I had a 75 Chevy luv and did the clutch to it. But when i had pulled the transmission out it had an “ inner bearing” that i didn’t know was there and had a heck of time putting it back together. My dad had to help me take it all apart and borrowed a pulley to take out that inner bearing and replace it with a new one😂👍thank God he showed up to help👍

I have that exact same car. I was worried about a $1000 bill when I burn out my clutch (I am just learning how to drive stick) but you make it look so easy I will do it myself. Funny part is that I bought this car cause I had the automatic version and I know that the car is easy to fix . I have done axles tons of times and they are very easy.

Scotty MSU lol when I first started tinkering around with my car. I did the spark plugs. Had no clue where they were on my old 95 Mercedes, I was pulling on the fuel injector rails thinking the spark plugs were under the injectors lmao and taking bolts off the engine not knowing wtf is going on. Till one day, under the black cover just a few inches to the side of the rails, where the spark plugs lived, I found them. Took me 1 day to figure that out and the second day to actually finish it, should’ve been a like a 30 min, (maybe a tad bit more, since mine was a v8 and there was little room to get to the back part where the plugs were). But then again, I bought the cheapest tiniest socket wrench set for 15 bucks outside my local junkyard, and the set was garbage to begin with and it was just hard not having proper tools. I was mad but relieve and felt proud I did something. Just recently I changed my starter, took me two day too, but since I got a new job, wasn’t able to have time to change it, was about 3hrs, only cause I didn’t have 10mm hex bit, and again, there was no room for my large hand to fit. Point is, I was just glad to get it done hahah😂

Mine just went out,I could just take it to the shop and give them $1500-2000 to do the job or I could spend $200 and do it myself following Scotty’s video.I’m smart enough to know if I tried to do it myself I’ll end up paying the mechanic the $1500-$2000 to replace the clutch and another $1000 from the other stuff I’ll break trying to do it myself.

I am going to state the blatantly obvious, but often overlooked tidbit of common sense: Don't EVER try doing this unless you're extremely advanced with cars. Yes, it is quite expensive to be done at a mechanic, but you will have absolutely no car if you screw something up, or just plain can't get things back together. Dropping a transmission is no novice task, getting it back into place is EXTREMELY difficult, this video doesn't show just how hard it can be. There are certain things that are absolutely worth paying a big price for to get them done at a shop, unless you're extremely proficient at cars, this isn't something you want to be getting into. I know this is all common sense, but I can't even count how many people I've seen fuck up their cars trying to do very difficult repairs by themselves, all because they didn't want to pay to get it done right.
depends on the car, and the person doing the work. I was putting clutches in cars when I was 14 years old, any mechanical person can do it.
***** I'm not telling people to depend on shops for everything, I'm a person who does nearly all of my own car work, and learned that way. I'm just telling people to be very careful what they get into, make sure they know what they're doing, or have someone around who is. Like I said, I have seen so many people fuck up their cars because they were trying to do something way other their head. Say you need your car for work, if you can't get your transmission back into place, you aren't going anywhere. It's definitely a great idea to work on your own cars, saves a ton of money, just make sure you have the necessary experience before delving into the advanced stuff, that's my whole theme here.
***** Hey in that case you had nothing to lose, I'd say go for it. It absolutely depends on the car, no doubt about it. For instance, I think anyone could agree a RWD is much easier to change a clutch in over a FWD or especially an AWD. My point is for people to always make sure they do their research beforehand; you don't want to jump in to suddenly realize you're absolutely screwed, have no idea what you're doing, and now have an inoperable vehicle that you cannot get back together. When that occurs, there are only two likely outcomes: They just put things back together despite being lost, and wind up screwing up their car, or they have no car to drive until they tow it to a shop, or find someone who can help them.
***** In my personal opinion, I think the best idea is to have someone around who knows their stuff to shadow you. Everyone knows of someone who is good with cars, most people will be happy to help you if you respect them, show genuine interest, and most importantly listen to them. My neighbor was a mechanic, I began going over there on weekends when he did side work. As a condition for him to teach me, I offered to assist doing all the "bitch work" so to speak, grabbing and returning tools, collecting trash, disposing of fluids, you name it. I figured that was fair, considering he was taking his personal time to sit and explain things to me.
In a very short period of time I went from not knowing how to change oil (I was never taught anything about cars in my family, every problem was take it to the shop) to changing my own brake pads, struts, fuel filter etc. If you gain a mechanic's respect, they will eventually usually let you bring your car over and work on it, and you always have them there for when you run into a jam. You then have the ability to be a go getter and dive into projects, with peace of mind knowing you have someone there to help.
Manuals can be a great tool, I just personally think nothing beats learning hands on from another mechanic. Jumping into projects is great, just make sure you have someone available to assist you if you run into a jam. Eventually you can pretty much become self sufficient, but until then it is wise to err on the safe side.

How on earth can you slip a clutch alignment tool in with the transmission input shaft in the way? You did not address supporting

Doing a clutch now it's way more involved than what's shown in the video you'll most likely have to drop the trans all the way out

start over - you know the procedure now so it will be quicker second time through - take it all back apart and check it's the right way round - when its opened up give the flywheel a good look over make sure it's not blued anywhere or scratched badly - also make sure you rebuilt the each assembly correctly and keep checking here for an answer from someone more qualified than me... im no mechanic... hope you get sorted

1) What's the difference between a drive shaft, CV joint, and axle?
2) Is there a specific side of the clutch disc that should face the transmission (and the other side facing the engine), or does that not matter?
3) Is it only with your jack that held your transmission up? If so, how did you balance it to prevent it from falling off?
4) Where in your video did you use tie rod separator? It was one of your "Things used in this video".
I like these videos because it's short all you really need is a recap of what needs to come off and everything goes smooth from there

Just another repair! I’d have someone on standby for that who had done one before, I know you have to lift the engine a few inches on a vw engine. All the same if it’s old you might as well take a chance. I did a timing belt/pumpearly in my amateur mechanic career, I reasoned if I trash the engine I haven’t lost much the van only cost 900 €. It was fiddly but I got it all lined up ok going carefully and gained in confidence. I think I would do it with thorough preparation, it kind of doesn’t make sense to run old vans if you won’t take a chance on doing repairs. Scotty the great can do man👍

This took 3 evenings on my car. I would suggest you have a piece of paper to tape the bolts/nuts/screws to and label them. It's very easy to forget where they go. Use a torque wrench for the big nuts on the hub if you don't have an electric drill with adjustable torque. Removing the gearbox from the car takes more time, but it makes it a lot easier to work on (fewer tight spaces). If you do remove the gearbox, you also need to take out the speed cable, and unhook the shifting clips.

Scotty, on my civic the clutch pedal would make a popping noise one day and the next day the shifter is super stiff and hard to put it in gear. Still turns on fine and still engages but the engagement point is lower and hasnt lost any fluid
