DO NOT buy a bicycle. You might fall and end up needing medical care. Total money pit if you ask me (the medical care part). Better just walk everywhere.
If ya get a bicycle, make sure to buy a Schwinn. Those Huffys are plagued with bad braking systems in the newer models. The Giants have bad gear shifters and should be recalled. 🤣🤣😂😂
I can't remember a worse time to be an auto consumer. Yeah, we had some pretty crappy cars in the 80's and 90's, but they were fixable, and at a reasonable price. When I was 16, you could go out and buy a used car for $500, and most of the time the thing would run and get you to where you were going. With these new computers on wheels, these cars are basically useless once they reach a certain age. Nobody is going to spend the kind of money it takes to fix a car like that.
@@landonbenford8369 Vehicles are slowly but surely becoming just like smartphones. Literally and figuratively. Once they reach a certain age, they are obsolete. Trade it in for the new model. Mechanics not only say they don't like working on them, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to find mechanics that even know how to fix these things properly. Forget the weekend DIYers, unless you have very specialized knowledge and tools, there is a lot you can't even touch on a modern vehicle.
@@Crayfish- The industry as a whole, government included, is completely out of touch with the needs of the middle class/lower income American. We can't afford what they're selling us, yet people are still financing this crap, because they don't have a choice a lot of the time.
According to both AP and Chicago Style guidelines, always use the apostrophe before the 80s as it replaces the 19. So the correct way would be ‘80s. You would not use an apostrophe after the 80 (as in 80’s) because the decade reference is a descriptive phrase, not a possessive. Hope that helps!
If you want a Reliable Vehicle, it's simple : 1. Turn Off your Pride and Ego... 2. Look for a Good Mechanic to search and buy a Fair Priced Used in Good Condition 90s to mid 2000s Toyota or Honda, with parts available in your country. 3. Fix it gradually to restore it's former glory, maintain it properly, and enjoy it until you die, funny enough, it will definitely out live you!
My ex wife made fun of my 2000 Toyota echo saying I bought a piece junk for taking the kids around and I know I didn't. Even though it's ugly it's a great car.
Scotty, you're a national treasure. I wish there were more people like you giving it straight. You're one of the few people on RUclips content creators I want to meet and have a beer with. I watch your videos religiously and have learned a lot. Please keep these videos coming as long as humanly possible. Thanks.
Not only is the quality assurance dropping in modern cars but the real problem, in my opinion, is they have too much technology to ever be reliable and the maintenance costs are putting a new car out of the reach of most. Making it worse is you have no option, you cant get a manual, simple, non computer controlled everything car even if you wanted one.
@@bradlambe3953 That's true and I don't really have a problem with that especially if they are generic and repairable to some level. It would be very difficult and expensive to do injection without an ECU. Where I struggle is where everything is interconnected and you cant isolate the dependency and where things are overly complex for the gain, I suggest battery management would fall into this. I don't know what modules are in EV's obviously battery management would be essential but I'll bet there are heaps of other modules which are there for functionality that are not required to keep the car going but probably stop the car.
Mazda is quickly becoming the best car company. I don't want another CVT ever, also don't want a turbo or hybrid. That leaves Mazda. They wanted $4K to rebuild my CVT with 80K, never again.
Cylinder deactivation is garbage! They all break! Worse then a Turbo! My last Turbo was good for 218k miles, got replaced 800 bucks! 8 yrs , 100 dollars a year for turbo power, no problem! Cheap replacement cheap repair! The trick, change oil at 4k or max 5k!
Damn that's the same way with my 2018 jeep grand Cherokee had it for 2 years already replace the water pump 3x with a year half luckily I got extended warranty on it 😬🤷🏿♂️🤦🏿😭
I'm old and I remember buying a glass jar (about a quart) of real Carnuba liquid wax. Once a month after washing the 4 cars in our family I'd wax them all with that stuff, probably didn't need to do it once a month but I did. We had the best looking cars in the neighborhood. It was a brownish tan liquid that you shook before using. Easy to apply and easy to buff, wish it was still being made. I always bought it at NAPA Auto.
Wouldn’t consider any other brands but Honda or Toyota except maybe Mazda. Other brands get recalled way more than them eg Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Nissan, Mopar. Honda and Toyota still rank high for a reason.
Nah Mazdas use Peugeot engines on their diesel engines. It's not like they are bad, but you are buying a mazda that's a transgender and wants to become a Peugeot 💀
Scotty will tell you something different tomorrow. It's ALL about getting more subscribers and views. Trust in Lexus, Toyota, Mazda, and Honda. Some Mazda and Toyota are made on the same assembly line. Toyota wouldn't have anything to do with Mazda if they weren't high quality.
Too late to help, hubby wanted to be a ‘Honda family’ (sons and I have always had used Hondas) so he bought a 2025 Honda Pilot. I have driven it but the mirrors deciding to change positions drives me nuts, also idling it ‘starts again’!! Who thinks of such ridiculous ‘improvements’??
Great, we have Scotty as an honest person and mechanic. That is what is lacking today in this day and time a good person with integrity. Jack and Janice DFW Texas October 21st 2024
Most reliable car i've ever had? 2003 VW GTI VR6. Have it 22 years now as my daily driver. No major mechanical issues, no leaks, no oil burning, and original chains! Built like a German Panzer Tank!
They have to compete. Modern market demands for updated technology, features, styling, and performance. More complexity equals less reliability and higher repair costs. Also, government regulations are crazy now more than ever.
It's not just Toyota that's going down the crapper unfortunately everybody's pushing for regulations which require manufacturers to dump more crapola into the car in order to adhere to the regulations thus raising the price to the point where manufacturers are also forced to cut corners and other areas in order to keep the cost down they have to keep their sedans under $35,000 somehow while still making a profit
I just replaced the handles on my wife’s matrix. The fronts were easy, the rear doors were a pita. I use nu finish for years. It’s not the same now. I use griot’s best in show now.
I finally found a 2024 4Runner that I wanted. I simply can’t take the chance on the new 2025 4Runner with all the new electronics, and new turbo motors. The 4Runner was ready for an update, but not all the updates Toyota added. There are a few things the 2024 could be complained about, but not its rock solid dependability.
True , I have a 2023 Toyota Camry SE with only 15 000 miles on it and I' m not happy with the car , every time I go over train rails or some lines on the road the glass in the back of the car rattle and now when I go on some ( not too much ) graving road , the drive' s window rattle , not happy at all. Note , I can take it to the dealership , but most of the times they give you all kind of excuses .
I understand , with only 5000 miles I had to take it to the Dealership because the rear passenger window was rattling , Dealership told me it was improperly made weldinngs and they fixed it , now I' m thinking all these problems are the same it looks like the glasses are not properly adjusted to the body of the car , that's the way it looks to me , engine and transmission were made in Japan , but the car was assembled here in the US , to me that' s lack of quality
As far as I am concerned anyone who doesn't drive 40,000 km a year as I do has no idea about a cars quality and I don't believe any part of their post.
Right now you're only good options are naturally aspirated or Toyota hybrid. Forced induction destroys these modern small displacement engines with direct injection. Oil dilution, oil blow back, fuel pump issues etc. the list goes on.
Thank you for updating us on these recalls that sometimes mainstream media misses or only shows one time. This gives consumers a better idea of which car to buy, and which cars to stay away from.
I would never buy a Toyota made after 2019 year model. Too much computer even in the base model. The base models also either have hybrid or turbos. They don’t give you much of a standard gasoline engine without all the gadgets and gizmos.
Thank you! my bucket list: Stopped considering Honda's when they made the 4cyl 1.5l turbo motor their primary car motor. Turbos will be very expensive for the owner to replace after the original manufacturer warranty runs out. Just like Scotty's customer who opted for the 2l non-turbo motor in his Ford van, he knew the non-turbo motor will be more reliable than a turbo motor. The last verified reliable Toyota from the good old days that still has a few new ones on the lot, the 2024 4Runner. Same 4Runner made since 2010. Regular 4 liter V6 motor, no turbo, all metal construction body on frame, and no turbo replacement, ever.
We had an 89 Ford Ranger that made 411000 miles! It still ran! Had a Mustang convertible with the 2300 that had 379000 miles on it when I put it on the roof one morning on the roof in the in the ditch dodging a deer! I'm sure there are thousands of GM small cars that made it that far!
You're not kidding about Optima batteries. I started buying them back when Gates was making them. The first two i bought lasted 9 and 10 years. Not any more.
I feel there's nothing left to buy. Most ICEVs now have engines made of plastic that will self-destruct in under 100,000 miles. Automakers have no incentive to make better engines, so ICEVs are done. But EVs are simply too expensive and changing too fast. I think the best option is to try to get a few more years out of our 10-20 year old cars, until EVs become cheap and stable.
Great advice as usual Scotty! Keep us informed. I learn a variety of automotive news from you that I don't hear/see anywhere else. You're the Man Scotty!
Toyota generally built something, then perfected it, then stuck to it for A LONG TIME while making incremental improvements, over time. Tried and Tested. Not sure about the new ones..
Going on 135,000 miles on my CRV 1.5£ 4 cylinder turbo. Just changed the front brakes and they still had .125" left on the pads... Change your oil 3 to 5 k... That's all it takes...
I just had my front breaks redone. Had to wait 3 days for brake pad shims which are only located in a warehouse in Cincinnati. I think the Honda turbos are adequate if they are not red lined and quick accelerated from a stop. If you pace the engine to a predictable set of daily drives. I will not touch the 10th generation Honda Civics with the 1.5 turbo as every driver I see wants to red line them all the time.
Old cars are more expensive than ever to have fixed where I live. It sucks cause my old honda transmission is too hard to find. Rebuilds cost a ton. Bought a 2.0 23 civic. Guess I'll find out how good it is down the road. Seems great.
Hi to all you Scotty fans . We were on the verge of buying our fourth Honda and read about a brake simulator issue through online owner forums . Apparently Honda have recalled 500k vehicles in Japan but not other countries as far as I know. It affects the Jazz/Fit, CRV and HRV 2018 -2022. I don’t know whether cars manufactured outside Japan are affected but the forums claim that some owners had to pay 2k pounds for the repair ,others say the dealership paid 40%. Eventually we opted for a Lexus instead after getting no reassurance from our dealership.
Put the blame where it mostly belongs, the EPA. Instead of just focusing on next gen battery tech, all the goofy tech that saves microscopic amounts of gas is required to meet their ever stricter numbers. That complexity makes drivetrains go out 3x faster, and they ignore the carbon footprint of making and saving up for new cars 3x as often.
Recently replaced my 20 year old conversion van with a one owner 2016 Mazda CX5 GT. The wife’s car’s CVT tranny went at 125k..$7k to replace it. Found a 2015 low mileage one owner CX5 GT. Couldn’t be happier with our two Mazdas at less than the cost of one 2024!
I just got maintenance done and a passenger side motor mount for my 2011 honda lx civic coupe with 100,000 miles and it was expensive but now the vibrations gone and it feels like a new car. I hope to keep it for at least a few more years
Scotty you have much good advice. I am driving 2014 Ford Escape with Ecoboost. The Escape has 133k on it and I drive it daily in the worst NYC traffic withe the original engine and transmission. It’s a company car and gets a lot of wear and tear.
I have a kia Soul 2016 with a 2.0L engine. I bought it new, and I was worried because of the reviews and comments on RUclips videos. So far, I don't have any problems mentioned in those reviews and comments. My car doesn't burns oil, the automatic transmission shifts perfectly, and ac throws cold air. The only things I have done are oil changes and change wipper blades and change the brake pads once.
I have the same car. Check engine light came on once at 55k miles. I change the oil every 3k miles and use fuel additive. Currently has 62k miles on it. I don't trust it. Engine recall
@daretodream...898 I guess I was lucky, I have the about the same mileage. I am planning to use it until it starts giving me problems. Maybe the difference between your car and my car is where it was manufactured. Check because mine was made in Korea.
That's the thing tho, you have barely used your car, at all. 62k miles is nothing, I'm driving a 20 year old Buick and have put 120k miles on it in the last year alone, I have yet to have had any actual drivetrain problems with it outside of basic maintenance, it now has almost 200k miles and still going strong. That's what ppl used to mean by a car being reliable
My 2016 Toyota Corolla I had to replace the drivers side cv axle and evap charcoal canister and purge valve because it got stuck closed from a disign flaw letting water and corrosion on the valve replaced with a updated part.
I have a 2016 toyota corolla s and am having the EXACT sale issues. My CV Axle is showing signs of being broken and I had to replace my evaporator purge valve. Im not that upset. The purge valve was 170 and the 2 CV Axles are 340 thats including tax. If it were another car I know I would be paying double. I boight my Corolla at 25k miles and now have 103k miles on it.
Older cars are easy to fix, parts are cheaper, they don't have bunch of gimmicky sounds and annoying alarms (such as the line departure warning), lesser things can break and they are cheaper to insure and THEY COST LESS!
You are so great! I agree hundred percent! My fiancee kept going to autozone over and over for brakes. I finally told him stop! Stop buying cheap brakes they are not meant for your Nissan van. These are rated for light utility and passenger vans which he does own but since he runs a small business snd carries more tools than harbor freight, that weight takes more stopping time and heavier duty brakes. They are not found at auto zone for the cheap price! Take in consideration the weight of the vehicle and total weight capacity and buy the better ones that cost more but stop your vehicle. Yes cheaper parts will save you money but not if you exceed vehicle requirements or capacity because like him. And if you don't understand why the brakes are wearing out so often like every tw o months which in the long run costs much more by far. Do the math! He listens to me now thank God because brake failure will cost more when you end up rear ending someone and there goes that small business! Thoughts?
The best car polish that I’ve ever used was Turtle Wax Ice. It was easy on and off and wouldn’t discolor plastic like Nu Finish does. The problem with that they don’t make it anymore.
I've thought about this too. Cars do need computers for basic functions but I feel like there needs to be a limit. Like I feel like just having a back up camera with a basic infortainment system should be good enough. I don't need an IPad mounted to my car's dashboard 😂
They are not allowed to do it because of the people we vote for that want to keep us all safe and healthy and therefore out of the goodness of their heart demand all the safety and cleanness.
You can buy a brand new Lada Granta for about $8500 USD, it has AC and a 5 speed manual transmission it is built well, and is reliable too. Think a modern day 1990s honest car. Unfortunately in the USA we do not have a free market, so you cannot buy what you actually want here.
Dear MrKilmer You are an inspiration and most importantly a great father figure to all of us fatherless youths.. keep on educating us and sharing such wise and intricate knowledge, Cheers to eternal life and happiest of bdays big dog. LONG LIVE SCOTTY.. forever reving thy engines. Amen
Thanks Scotty, I'm really starting to itch for a new vehicle. In the process of hunting down the best SUV, I followed your videos and suggestions. What I've come to know is the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Grand Highlander (and their high line counterparts) both have issues. The Pilot/MDX has the timing belt issue which has to be replaced at the 100k mark, and the Grand Highlander/TX 350 has a Turbo 4 cylinder which isn't practical considering weight and the reliability. I've also looked at Kia's, Subaru's, Nissan's, etc ... all have some type of reliability concern, like the CVT in the Subaru's. It just doesn't seem to be a good time to buy anything new, especially with the crazy prices! Maybe I'll figure it out, it's still early yet.
The only engine I don’t trust from Honda is a 1.5T. I’ve seen them last in the civics but in the Accords I’ve seen they have had blown head gaskets and other issues.
I hadn’t used Nu Finish for 20 years. Bought some this spring. It’s no longer as good as I remember. In fact I think I can say it doesn’t really do anything. I thought maybe I just had an overinflated memory sense of how well it worked, I guess not.
Nu Finish is intended to be used on cars that were painted in the pre base coat clear coat years. It doesn’t work on cars painted with base coat clear coat. Only paint that was automotive enamel without clear coat.
Very true,I bought a 2022 Lexus RX350, brand new 2 yrs ago.Sold if off within 1 month.Again, bought 2023 Lexus ES350, a year ago.Returned it back to dealer after 1 month.Climate control gave me problem twice in month.I will stick to my 2017 RDX.7 yrs,no problem, beautiful SUV.Never buy any car manufactured after 2020.
If you are ever back in Houston, you should do a video on my 1998 Jeep Wrangler. it has 244,000 miles on it. It still has the original engine and standard transmission.
@scottykilmer… I need to know your opinion on the 3 best new cars to buy and the 3 best new SUV to buy… preferably Non hybrids. Love your videos. Very informative. You’re fun to watch. ❤
I've just bought a 17 year old Lexus GS300, V6, rear wheel drive with 55,000 miles on it. It took me a few weeks to find on the internet, a car without all the hi-tech unproven stuff Scotty talks about. yay...old skool tech, modern car.
Toyota has to compete. Modern market demands for updated technology, features, styling, and performance. More complexity equals less reliability and higher repair costs. Also, government regulations are crazy now more than ever. These things together drive up prices.
Wait a minute the booster works on vacuum it's not ran by computer it's just a hose. That means the manifold vacuum is to low for the booster to work properly.
Thinking about buying a Toyota Corolla Hybrid in 3-4 years. You think they will be better in those times? Mazda still don’t seem to be that good at hybrids, and Toyota just seems to have that much more time of experience there
The can of Nu-Finish I purchased in 2011 has curdled and separated. The fact that I still have most of a can left says something about my interest in car detailing. I do regret that now though because the old truck looks like crap.
My 2012 Caravan engine blew so I got stuck I bought a brand new van sienta Platinum I love it but I'm waiting for the problems I got free oil changes and 150,000 10-year warranty so keep my fingers crossed
I always knew when Toyota decided to modernize their fleet they would have soooo many issues. The price to pay for staying in the Stone Age for 25 years. They emerged without a clue.
I love that people only judge by brand name , I am driving old Volvo and VW and some cars they used to make reliable as toyota and cost same as old ugly Corolla but driving on absolute different level
My best motorcycle battery lasted 6 years or so, then in the 2010s I could only get 2 almost 3 years. Talking about Yuasa, even starting new where You pour in the acid and trickle charge.
Regarding the optima batteries, it reminds me of Harley-Davidson saying that they're only going to temporarily make all their motorcycles with the revolution engine in Thailand.

Give him a week, 😅
Well, not only that, but considering that he's dead for the 17th time, RIP, it's even more difficult for him to recommend a vehicle.
How about a 20 year old Celica?
After all Scottie’s “don’t buy this car” videos, I’m convinced the only safe bet is a bicycle
horse & buggy
And not an electric one.
Carburetor car or 90s to early 2000s fuel injected Toyota or Honda or Suzuki (left America years ago). EFI with or without VVT-I it both are good.
Shoutout to Scotty for ALWAYS keeping it real🫡
I can't remember a worse time to be an auto consumer. Yeah, we had some pretty crappy cars in the 80's and 90's, but they were fixable, and at a reasonable price. When I was 16, you could go out and buy a used car for $500, and most of the time the thing would run and get you to where you were going. With these new computers on wheels, these cars are basically useless once they reach a certain age. Nobody is going to spend the kind of money it takes to fix a car like that.
And I haven't heard ONE mechanic say they like working on this newer junk!!

If you want a Reliable Vehicle, it's simple :

99% of all vehicles worldwide have had ECU's since the 80's

Toyota used to fill the "Affordable and reliable" spot, but now they're expensive and less reliable.
Maybe cost cutting.

Thats just the stiff sport suspension of the SE model bud. The LE has a softer bouncy suspension.
Happy birthday Scotty 🎉
Right now you're only good options are naturally aspirated or Toyota hybrid. Forced induction destroys these modern small displacement engines with direct injection. Oil dilution, oil blow back, fuel pump issues etc. the list goes on.
Most cars today are direct injection turbos, I personally will never buy one of them
@@MrRohanThomas Yes sir, I feel the same.
I have a 95 Toyota cylinder.Just like scottie's I have four hundred thousand miles on it still runs good
We had an 89 Ford Ranger that made 411000 miles!
1.5L turbo with 20psi of boost and 2000psi of GDi making more power than K24 what can go wrong?
That’s because when you look at their new lineup, you can tell it’s run by a new guy changing stuff around. Certainly not Toyota once was.
It's because non toyota customers want all that electrical stuff in their cars.
A few years agim Consumers Union also reported the NUfinish liquid was inferior to te the paste version (less durable, etc).

The first company that decides not to over computerize a car and sell them at a reasonable price will seize the day.
I've thought about this too. Cars do need computers for basic functions but I feel like there needs to be a limit. Like I feel like just having a back up camera with a basic infortainment system should be good enough. I don't need an IPad mounted to my car's dashboard 😂
