#3 Featured Artist: David Qualey
#2 Fylde Guitars
#1 ToneTalk - Хобби
I played in a band with my dad for 10 years. We both bought a Ibanez 950 in 1976. When my dad passed, I got his. I gave it to my son. Then my sister sent the other one to me. Yesterday I gave it to my grandson. I know they were cheap guitars, but they were what we could afford at the time. I recently changed out the saddles and nuts to bone and WOW! they never sounded better! Thanks for all the shows!
Love the positivity of this show. So many folks are jaded and cynical on the internet and in life. Nice to get away from all of that. I was just gone for 7 months and have a lot of acoustic tuesday to catch up on. Thanks guys!
Tony, I love the story about your dad's guitar. It has the DNA from both of you, no one else can ever say that.
#smallwin Went to my very first ever TAC guitar jam. It was awesome. Even though I've only been playing for about a year everyone made me feel right at home. Met some incredibly talented folks. There's such support in this community. Can't wait for the next jam.
so nice to meet you there.. looking forward to the next one
#smallwin A short while ago I got together with an age old friend to play some music. He pulled out an original tune to play - a nice little ditty with an alternating bass. I immediately pulled out a capo and decided to play up the neck for a nice blend of different voices (think Milk Carton Kids and many others). I immediately came up with a repeatable riff that seemed like it was just made for the song. My friend thanked me for creating a signature sound that defined the song. It was very humbling and gratifying.
I have been hooked since the first show I saw, probably a year ago. I have learned so much. Too much to even remember it all. I have two great # small wins. I got a dream gibson sj200. Along with several other great guitars. I have my shirt and I will send you a guitarsinal. # small win #2 is I struggled with bar chords for a couple of years and in your ten minute learn the top string lesson I am now a master of bar chords. Thanks to both of you so much.
Greetings from Evington VA guys! I am back from my trip to Korea and surprisingly am not feeling too jet lagged! Man I cannot thank Tony enough for reviewing the Klos travel acoustic as it was one of 3 or 4 reviews I looked up before buying mine! It was soo nice to have a guitar to play when I had down time visiting family and touristy sites lol. I think I missed my Godin A12 the most while I was gone. Another great episode as per usual guys! Also loved the rant about the plastic bridge pins on more expensive acoustics. ^_^
Hi guys! Cheers from Buena Vista, Georgia! Big kudos on this weeks Tone Talk segment, and thumbs up on calling out CF Martin, for their use of plastic bridge pins! Replaced my D 35 plastics with ebony, some time back. They are a very economical upgrade. About $28.00, and they make a world of difference in sound! I hear the new “comfort neck” profile is a joy to play. I’ll find out at the Summer NAMM and will give you a report, if you’d like. I have a case of GAS, over the new Martin OM 28 Modern Deluxe, so I may come home with a new guitar. Great episode, Tony, and Noah. Keep up the great work!
Loved David Qualey, gonna listen more .. and great to know that maybe we'll see more about Will ! He's awesome ! :)
Cheers from Brazil !
Love the show guys, from cereal to Brad the face licking hockey player.Im from Boston and we call him the little ball of hate! It's so much fun listening to other guitar geeks.Keep on keeping on. Louie G.
Watched Tuesday evening from Boston, Massachusetts. I knew Ry Cooder had something to do with the Crossroads movie, but that cost me the trivia. Back to '0'. Thanks again for a fun show. Noah, get well soon. Given the tape delay, hopefully you already are.
I use F-One oil on my rosewood fretboard, and have noticed that it does darken the wood. However, I think this is more an effect of the wood being too dry, and actually needing oil. It will be interesting to see the impact on the black walnut fretboard on my D-18 Model America 1.
Ditto your comment on plastic bridge pins! It's not so much that they are bad, but they wear out quickly! Great show - again! Steve - Brazoria, TX
Plus one on the F-One oil 👍
Another amazing artist using fylde guitars, John Smith. Incredible guitarist!
Absolutely agree. Wonderful guitarist and can sing the birds out of the trees. Great songwriter too.
just to add you can use the pickup through a valve amp so you don't need a acoustic amp , great pickup changed my playing
Great show indeed Tony and Noah! Thanks Kindly! LINSEED OIL AND MAPLE FINGER BOARDS: I've been a cabinetmaker for over 50 years and rosewood and ebony are definitely harder than maple. And linseed oil will darken the wood and I used a few drops on my bridge and fret board twice a year. Linseed oil has been used as a finish for centuries. I apply a few drops, wait and few minuets and rub the excess off. And plastic bridge pins? Yuck! Love, Light, Peace and Pickin! DaveyJO in Lancaster Co. Pa.
Noah, your hats are so crisp and your brim's are so flat, I just cry.
Hi there always looking forward to the show every tue! Tuning in from singapore! 😊✌🏻
The Taylor service dept. uses linseed oil to condition and recommends it in a video. I've been using it after cleaning and string change but only once a year, not every string change.
Also thanks for mentioning Qualey I love him! I play it when I do things around the house Thanks
#smallwin You might remember featuring a comment of mine a few months ago about meeting Tommy Emmanuel and picking the guitar back up. Anyway, finally, after 10 months of playing fingerstyle guitar my thumb independence is finally starting to kick in and feel natural. And just in time too since I bought meet and greet tickets to see Tommy again in September (this time to hopefully play with or for him). September can't come soon enough!
play with him? That would be amazeballs
Great episode guys!
Btw.. I got the Guitarsenal shirt in the mail today. Who knows, maybe i'll submit a picture some day. That is if i can fit all the guitars in..
Have a great acoustic week!
I could listen to David Qualey all day defo gonna check him out
Like that traffic jam on the way home from work when I have time to hear the AT episode xD
La Croix is good. Have you tried "Talking Rain"? It is made in Preston, WA. Sold by Costco in the PNW, also Winco Foods. It is Zero Cal, 0 sugar, etc, comes in natural, lime, tangerine, peach, etc. Carbonated water....Good stuff. My favorite. .....Russell D.
Morning everyone from Tacoma, Washington
In my experience, 50+ yrs of guitar, the bridge pins don't have much of an effect on the sound of the guitar. But, protecting the bridge plate is a good reason to change the plastic pins to some other material. I tried a "platemate" and they are a option also.
James Morrison: Hey James, I have felt that way having changed to bone or ebony a few times and noticing only a small difference but, last week I put a set of Martin Liquid Metal pins on my D28 and, wow, the added projection in very noticeable! Just thought you might be interested in hearing that. Also, with 50 years+ experience, I'd sure be curious to what brand(s) of guitar you play/recommend.
@@rtgray7 I have a 1995 HD28, 2006 HD28, 1978 Taylor 855 12 string,(my favorite!), and a 2010 Taylor 855ce 12 string. I will have to try those liquid metal pins. I have plenty of holes to try them in. lol I switched the saddles on the HD28s to Fossilized Mamoth Ivory. They magnified the warmth and sustain. I put a bone saddle in the 2010 Taylor. Taylor guitars come from the factory with "Micarta", (plastic I think), saddles. Every guitar has a different voice and being a major guitar geek, I love every one I have! I think there's a Martin OM or a round neck resonator in my future. :}
Thanks James. Wow I also have Martins and Taylors and I love them all. Great to see someone else who plays Martins but doesn't hate Taylors! Sure they are different but, that's the point am I right? Variety... I put a bone saddle on my 2009 416LTD and it tightened it up noticeably, helped with the sustain and even the volume a bit. So now I've got to do the same for my 514ce and 812e of course! Currently I'm jonesin for a Larrivee OM but my wife doesn't know it yet lol!
@@rtgray7 You are correct! It doesn't matter what kind of guitar you have or how much you paid. It only matters if it speaks to you or has many memories you share with it. My wife passed away 2 years ago, so I have no one to keep me in check when it comes to spending money on music. Two of my guitars need pickups. That's my next expense. So many pickups to chose from. LR Baggs Anthem, K & K pure mini, or a Trance audio Amulet are the ones I'm considering. Anyway, it's nice talking with you. By the way, Where abouts do you live? I live in Dover, PA. Near York, Pa.
@James Morrison Very sorry to hear about your wife. Reminds me to cherish every moment with mine. I live in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Nice talking to you also :)
Hey Tony + Noah. I love the David Qualey feature. Such a wonderful guitarist, I'll be sure to listen to the rest of his material.
Btw, when I saw the miniature, I thought you were featuring Dan Ar Braz (must've been the bald head hehe). If you haven't heard of him yet, oh, you must! He's a breton acoustic + electric guitarist, a master of celtic music, the main guitar force in Alan Stivell's band, and very respected by the late great Rory Gallagher. #featuredartist
As always, thanks for the show, keep it up! Cheers from São Paulo, Brazil.
String material has a big effect on a magnetic pickup. I use aluminum core medium light that has a better balance than phosphorus bronze. You should compare strings with a mag pickup
What brand
Greetings from the Cayman Islands....for now. ...almost fell out of my chair when Noah said he's not dating his friend sister
I’m in the process of buying a Takamine I have not heard anyone mention anything about them I just want to make sure I’m buying the right guitar. Help Tony and Noah
Greetings from Gloucester, Va. By the way, she said the wedding march sounds more like funeral music to her.
Ha! You think Will McNicol looks like Levi? You should check out Collin Hill, yet another under-the-radar, awesome guitar player who can probably pass for Levi's son (not that Levi's wife has anything to worry about). You'll likely get an AT Artist submission on Collin Hill in the very near future from me (if no one else had submitted him already).
you will get a +1 from me on Collin Hill as a suggestion for a featured artist too. Think Tommy Emmanuel skill and styling.. amazing
How is it when you go percussive (using the body as a drum)? Please let me know...
I know the dual tone nv is ideal for this, but here in Belgium no shops/wholesalers have them... I need something all in 1 as a percussive (body/snare) and fingerstyle player. Thanksssss
(Non electric Taylor GS Mini)
I hope you try those from S Duncan. Those have real wood veniere finish. Visually looks really attractive
#smallwin Just finished my first month with TAC and can say that I haven't been this excited about playing guitar since I first picked one up in 1990. Can't wait to see what next month brings. I think I'll celebrate with a wonderfully peaty #Scotch.
Thank you Tony for the rant about cheap bridge pins on very not cheap guitars. I'm behind you 100%, along with most other guitar geeks I'm sure. Martin should know better. In fact, you could say #youknowyoureaguitargeekwhen you stand up and start randomly cheering in your house, scaring your roommate into thinking that something crazy is going on, but it's only you freaking out about little plastic pieces you stick into your guitar.
Speaking of Martin guitars however...
If you're going to tell us that your dad's Martin has an exceptional piece of rosewood for the back, don't just leave us hanging! Turn it around! It only takes a second! You can't tease us like that, man.
Rant over. Thanks for show.
Hello from Knoxville, TN. You gotta show some love for the more grown cereals like Honey Bunch of Oats which is healthy while still sweet enough to satisfy the child in all of us.
Thank you
Hello from the Tampa, FL area! It’s HOT!!!
Sorry my comment sent you guys so far down the cereal rabbit hole. Unintended consequence, but it is a reminiscent topic. I'll try to be more careful with my commenting going forward. ;-) In all seriousness, I think you are right about giving the guitar improvement time.
Greetings again from Missoula, I have a couple small wins to report from the past week and a half, #smallwin I got to go to Spokane the weekend before last to see Neil Young solo, one organ, three pianos, eight guitars and a six string banjo kind of thing, he played everything except the 12 string. Then Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs' new album showed up in the mail yesterday. Life is good.
So, assuming you don't add any more guitars, how many years will it take you to show us all the guitars in your guitarsenal?
Wow...lowest price I could find for a new Fishman Blackstack is $249.95.
Seems a bit ridiculous doesn’t it?
Made Fishman Classical Guitar Pickup?
Felix Mendelssohn wrote the Wedding March in 1842 to go with Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream.
#adandd1stedition that outro was like a spell cast by a high level wizard. Must find cereal! (It’s 11pm)
"Sonic Mush" - great name for a band!
#small win You said pick an easy song to play I picked Mother and it’s been taking me a long time but now I’m singing to it as well. Thanks to Tony ad Noah you’ve gave me the confidence too play an easy song
Blackstack vs Dimarzio Black Angel, besides the 100 dollar difference, how do you think they match up?
The wedding march was written by Mendelssohn in 1842.
#smallwin I just acquired a 1978 Taylor 855 12 string. I already have a 2010 855ce. The 1978 is the best 12 string I ever played. Neil Young has two of them. Now I know why! I'm going to have to get a Trance Audio Amulet pickup installed. Can you demo one and give your opinion on it?
Where can I get one of those jerseys???
Well I’m in Maryland closer to DC so I love my CAPITALS
So, you like this one better than the Dimarzio Black Angel?
I actually do like them both for different reasons. The Black Angel has a bit of a more pronounced higher frequency presence, where as the Fishman is subtly more balanced.
#youknowyoureaguitargeekwhen You pay for the purchase of latest guitar with the sale of your used car. (true story)
I'm back! From Dover Pa. Cheers!
Greetings from Richburg, N.Y. Quisp cereal and Rob Raye.
#tonetalk #askthebeard concerning Brazilian Rosewood (or any other tonewood for that matter) - how much of a difference does flatsawn vs quartersawn actually make (on back and sides). I read an article by Dana Bourgeois that tops are not really quartersawn, but rift-sawn! Steve (Brazoria, TX)
Good morning from PR
have you compared it with the Fishman rare earth blend
# you might be a guitar geek when you purchase a guitar and set up payments of 65.00 until your wife says when you pay this one off you can get another one so you increase your payments to 400.00 a month to get one in less than a year.
#tonetalk; Tony is their a difference in buying cheaper ebony bridge pins on the web vs. from Taylor where I bought mine or bridge and saddle blanks etc. When they look the same.
Checking in from Kannnnnnnnnnnnnnsas City
You know your a guitar geek when, your at a kids birthday party and theres ice cream cake but someone forgot spoons so you go into your wallet, pull out a guitar pick and use it to eat said icecream cake much to the disgruntlement of children who are awaiting spoons
#1petpeeve When you get an expensive guitar and it has plastic bridge pins. I actually commented to Martin with their new vintage 17 models that come with plastic bridge pins. Like in the 30's they used plastic bridge pins??? Ha ha wrote this before Tony mentioned the same thing.
You know I think I read in ToneQuest that Neil Young uses bone on the high 3 strings and ebony low 3 strings.
Great show, keep up the tone talk!
Thanks Gordon from Cincinnati.
How about Cheeri-Ovechkins as a cereal?
Nice
I stopped eating cereal, SNAP CRACKLE AND POP, goes to other parts of your body and when you get older, you get to have them when you get up in the morning just getting out of bed.
Count Chocala ( spelling?)
I grew up on Pat Lafontaine and Alexander Mogilney from the Sabers, and the incomparable Theo Fleury. And Lucky Charms, NO MILK.
ProStars sounds like star-shaped Cheerios.
#tonetalk How does humidity affect a guitar? What if there's too low humidity or high humidity? I kept my guitar in an air-conditioned room. Then noticed that my bridge is getting kinda brittle.( I didn't have a hygrometer at the time and was new at guitar) So not doing that again. Also, do you have some tips on how to make a room get the right humidity for guitar?
If you don't have a way to keep your guitar in a humidified room, you should keep it in the case and use a case humidifier. There are several options and your local music store can likely help you with that. We have our guitars in rooms with the doors closed and use appropriate room size humidifiers along with inexpensive thermometers/humidity readers to ensure we are at about 45% to 55% humidity
#youknowyoureaguitargeekwhen you have been not only with Acoustic Tuesday since day 1, but you've seen every single Tony P's review on Music Villa as well.
#smallwins...I got a surprise delivery in the mail at the end of last week.
Treepicks guitar pick makers in Calgary, sent me some wooden guitar picks with my name engraved on them. They are awesome picks and a fantastic company to deal with
We refer to the great grandchildren as little petri dishes ..cause you know
#youknowyouareaguitargeekwhen You wear your guitarsinal t-shirt on your weekend family camping trip to your favorite amusement park in hopes you will connect with another guitar geek to talk shop; no joy this weekend, but the family trip was awesome 😎. And yes a guitarsinal picture to come soon. #DND
Damn, that story about your dad's guitar and what it means to you ..I'm not crying, you're crying. Just saying.. I love your parents..
#youknowyoureaguitargeekwhen you online looking at baby name websites because you got a new guitar and want to find a name that really captures the essence of the newbie
So Tony, about the Acoustic Life Hockey. Only 2 things to say. #smallwin BRUINS!!

#learneditonlooneytunes
Aahh yes. I remember when my children were school-aged, and brought a plethora of sicknesses home. Once it was a stomach flu so severe, I was hospitalized for 3 days😥. And I agree on the 'Wedding March'; one of the crappiest pieces of music ever written😱. Love the show!!...and Tony, I can't stand the Bruins either. Go 🎵😘
My birthday was earlier this month too. It's hard to get anything for mothers' day, when your birthday is just days earlier.😡oh well😘
