Thanks Aaron. Great info, as usual. I’m surprised just how much I like the system. I have blended in a magnetic pickup for playing lead at acoustic gigs many times but the whole system works really well for the acoustic sound. Intelligent implementation of the TRS option.
I’d given up on Fishman but this pickup peaks my interest.
As you say, it’s good for the guitars that don’t need a permanent pickup.
This could be Fishman’s best pickup… it ticks a lot of boxes.

I go to a lot of gigs to see artists / bands ... and play regularly at my church.
By far, the BEST acoustic sound I heard at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen was from a solo performance about 15 years ago by singer / songwriter Mark Erelli playing a Martin HD28 with the Fishman Rare Earth Custom Blend (a sound-hole pickup with a mic on a goose neck that you can position in a sweet spot inside the guitar) ... found this out by talking with Mark at the gig .... did my research and found this pick-up was the preferred choice of Gordon Giltrap (amazing player) ... so I put one of these in a Guild D50 ... played through a Marshall AS100D Acoustic Amp ... sounds great ... you need a bit of the "woodiness" that the mic provides ... (electric guitar amps are not voiced for this set up so use an acoustic amo) ... I have a Collings with a Highlander IP 2 in it (Martin Simpson uses an IP 1 - no mic version, piezo only) ... The IP 2 has piezo and internal mic combo ... I am just NOT a fan of the piezo quack and would happily replace the set up with a Fishman blend pick-up set up to get the acoustic sound I like (and which works great in the church - any setting) ...To date I have put the Fishman blend in 4 acoustic guitars (the Guild plus 3 x K. Yairi models (great guitars btw)) and would always have that as my go to choice. The Fishman works great too with the LR Baggs Para DI or Fishman Aura if you fancy dinking with sounds ... as well as the Marshall, I use / have used SR JAM 400 combo and AER Acousticube 2 amps ... all sound great ... I did put an LR Baggs M1 sound hole pickup in a smaller bodied Guild ... but, I hated - really hated - that pickup! Just horrible to me ..... Some players love it ... not for me. I'd be interested in hearing a K&K set up sometime ... I have tried Cole Clark Fat Lady 3 with its unique system but did not keep the guitar ....CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland

If you miss the addition of the piezo sound, note that the JGM5 comes with the Fishman Rare Earth Mic Blend combined with the Fishman Tap PowerTap Earth Blend. So, there are 3 pickups: Microphone, humbucker, and Tap Body Sensor. It gives an overall better sound by bringing back some of that piezo sound and capturing the low ends. Also, it helps alot with percussive elements.

Nice video I liked the 50/50 if I ever use a pick up in my Martin 000-28 EC this would be the one I used not a permanent install pickup guy
I have that guitar and that pickup. I elected the permanent installation option since I will never sell this guitar. I bought it on 2003 for I think $2200.
My favourite sound live. A mag with a mic blend. I use a SD mag mic. Altough they lack that piezo bass, so for solo artists or for anyone playing without a bassist I would combine it with a piezo of some kind and EQ the piezo with a low pass filter.And they do rob your guitar of energy when playing unplugged. It is not a question of if they do. They do hinder the top from vibrating. In a big way.

I think the hindering depends on the size and weight of the Soundhole pickup but the great thing is you can remove it if there’s any fear of that. I just wish it had a detachable cable so it could be permanently installed but still removable (just leaving the cable inside the guitar).

Have you tried the Mojotone Quiet Tone NC-2 which is a magnetic sound hole pick up with a mic blend feature. There’s a video comparing the Fishman with Mojotone
I have and I found it too noisy where I play (as I do with most other single coil pickups). I believe there is now a humbucker version which I would be interested in checking out.
I think this pick up sounds great! Thanks for doing this demo Aaron. I just recently have gotten into magnetic pick ups again. I was using a Fishman premium blend. But the microphone kept getting picked up in my loops. It makes that pick up virtually unusable. I decided to go with the sunrise pick up. It’s a single source, but the quality of that source is so high
Yes a mic can bleed the sound back and it’s harder to use a Soundhole cover. Good point!
Since this Fishman has stereo splitter options you could run them in 2 separate signals? Wouldn't that eliminate the mic bleed?

I've tried that before but it adds more gear and time and I think it sounds pretty funky to my ears. After 55 years off playing, I am a true minimalist when it comes to setting up my rig. I also only play battery powered. They always put me in out of the way locations in wine bars and cafes. Of course everyones needs are different. @@aaronshortmusic

It would be interesting to hear what you could do with this system and a good outboard blender. It would also be an opportunity to demo the blender.
Yes or you could run it into two channels of a mixing console which would give a lot of tone shaping options!
@@aaronshortmusic That’s possible if the mixer has guitar appropriate EQ capability AND you aren’t running vocals or other instruments on the other channels. Otherwise, you’ll have to fiddle with both mixer channels (trying to maintain the pickup balance) every time you want to adjust the blended signal level.
I was very impressed with the internal mic. 50/50 sounded pretty good too. I might have opted for a 60/40 with 60% Mic. But that's nit picky and the ratio of mic to magnetic PU would be a matter of preference and opinion. I have heard from others who use sound hole Pickups say they sometimes hit the pickup with their pick. That would be bothersome to me. I might be challenged with a pickup in the sound hole but not certain. Just something else to consider.
I think those people are talking about larger pickups that are not mounted at the front of the Soundhole. I pick more towards the bridge.

This system is really interesting to me for all the reasons you mentioned in this video. I have one question though and since you made this video about 9 months ago, chances are you might not remember the details. But I’ll ask it anyway, because maybe the subject of my question is inherent to this pickup system itself and if it is you would be able to give me an answer that’s actually really helpful (I’m sorry for my wording - English is not my native tongue).
Anyway, here we go. Question: When I heard the magnetic pickup on 100% it sounded better than I expected. And when I heard the little mic at 100% it sounded pretty good too and warmer than I thought it would be, especially since this didn’t seem to be the case in other videos I just watched. But after that you demonstrated the 50/50 blend and I noticed a significantly higher output volume and maybe because of that it didn’t sound as pleasant to my ears as any of the 100% settings. I’m sure a well balanced blend would give the best result almost by definition, but it sounded unpleasant to me because of the volume boost. Here comes the real question (or questions): could it be that it’s only my ears deceiving me and is there no volume boost at all, or is this just a logical outcome of a system where you have two sources (one magnetic pickup and one tiny mic) that automatically leads to an increase of volume when you use both sources instead of just one? One of the reasons I’m asking this is the fact that I can only see one little ’wheel’ to control something and I assume that would be the blend control, which would mean that there’s no overall volume control. I ask myself, have you ever noticed this? And if so, did it ‘bother’ you? And if so, how do you manage this ‘problem’?
I’m fully aware that the chances are very high that you never thought of this as a problem that needed to be fixed. For all I know it might very well be your favourite setting. I’m just curious, because I was extremely excited until I heard the 50/50 blend. What I mean by that is, as I already mentioned, I thought both 100% settings sounded very good, but not necessarily better than what I use myself. So I expected the 50/50 setting to give me a HALLELUJAH moment. But that moment never happened. Which is a bummer, because everything else was perfect. The fact that it sounds good and that it’s easy to install without the need to permanently alter your expensive guitar and that it’s so easy to use it on any guitar you would like to play at any given time.
I’m so sorry for the long story. This is my handicap. I can’t help myself. I really want to keep my comments and questions short, simple and direct, but I really struggle with this. Please forgive me! I do like to ‘hear’ your thoughts on this, based upon your own experiences with this pickup system.

I don’t remember but it certainly didn’t bother me. Remember the wheel has many possible positions. I would scroll through them until I found the best for me and leave it there. All pickups have a sweet spot for the player.

When the mic came in at 50/50, my ears are overwhelmed.
The soundhole to me is an instant attack and the mic to me sounds boomy and everything then becomes muddy and really intense.
It's too much for me. Id rather one or the other.
The mic sounds like it's behind a muffled pillow and slower, I am no expert, but I feel what I feel haha.
Soundhole gives the instant attack and clarity of a piezo without the quack, mics sound the most real but feedback... (yes it rhymed haha).
So I reckon hearing this pickup just with magnetic pickup vs M80 for me would be a great one, remembering the M80 then has that extra sensor which wouldn't feedback, I'd guess the M80 then wins?
@@oliverbones8966 I prefer the Fishman. Remember that these demos have no EQ applied so the sound can be further shaped by the player.
I have this pickup in a Martin OM 28 custom with a thru saddle. The mic is great until you get on a stage and then it's unusable. The magnetic is feedback proof, but doesn't sound great solo. It's pretty good with a band. Also the sound-hole mount seems to lessen the vibration of the top which is not desirable when playing unplugged.
Waiting for the hi-fi duet. Really hoping it sounds good and doesn't feedback on stage.
I'm 100% with you in my dislike of UST pickups, though I have 3 Anthem systems. They seem so far to be the best sounding overall especially when paired with a good IR.
Sounds great. But I must ask, what mic was used for the room mic that we hear first? Has its own sound.

Do you think it’s taking away the unplugged sound of the guitar when you don’t use the pick up, that’s what scare me if I consider to install it permanently.

I would use this over the K&K any day and the mic makes it more ‘natural’ than the HiFi for me. I didn’t notice any effect on the acoustic tone. It’s very small and light. If it did bother me I would modify it with a detachable cable so I could permanently install it but remove it when not in use, just leaving the cable inside the guitar which I would secure with some additional clips.

It really does sound great, and I agree this is a good option for a sound hole pickup. Expensive though.

@@aaronshortmusic I’m really considering this one. It’s a toss up between this and the new Mojotone NC-2. I know you review the NC-1 and didn’t like the noise, but my use would be primary live in a loud band and running a DI to FoH mixer. I have a DI with a ground/lift switch a phase switch. What would you recommend having tried both? I also play solo fingerstyle amplified too (the Fishman probably wins with the low noise factor there)
@@smandez2023 I really love this pickup and I like the mic option and the stereo output. I would choose this one (I haven’t tried the humbucker version of the Mojotone yet).

There were 2 additions to the Mojotone lineup since you reviewed the NC-1; the first (NC-2) is the same exact pickup you reviewed but has a mic built in and a blend wheel much like this Fishman, the second a is a humbucking passive design called the NC-Passive. I'm guessing you won't like the Passive based on my own experience. I bought one and it does sound good, but it is noisy and I cannot determine where the noise is coming from. I think even the cable itself produces noise. Great review!

Aaron, what would you recommend between this and the Anthem SL for a gigging 000 Martin guitar?
I currently recommend both. It depends on which style of pickup you prefer. For a gigging stage guitar I would probably go for the Anthem SL but again it depends on the guitar and your needs.
My Martin has a horrible Fishman Sonitone. The Nux Optima Air improved it a lot, I was quite impressed, but still… I was about to order the LR Baggs Anthem before I came across this video. To my ears, I think for strumming, I really like this Fishman better than the Anthem. Thanks for the review Aaron.
This system is one of my favorites for strumming! I do like the SL as it doesn’t block the Soundhole but they are both great depending on your needs.

I'm entering the acoustic pickup world and unsure of what I want. One day I'm sure about soundboard tranducer pickups. But now I'm considering this one again. With SBT pickups, i dont like the idea of maybe having to use glue if, it could be that I dont like it and would like to remove it. Removing i guess won't be easy, plus I understand it won't be usable to sell second hand. I seem to like the fishman because of this,easy to install and remove and even sell if I dont like it. Would it be a good idea to use it with an IR, like the nu optima? Thanks for all your videos, very enjoable, i like that they are also straight to the point and genuine, things which lack on many youtube channels.
Welcome to the bottomless pit of acoustic guitar pickups lol! Soundhole pickups don’t tend to work well with IR but if you only plug in occasionally they are a very god option as they avoid installs and glue like you mentioned.
@@aaronshortmusichaha!! yes, indeed, so much information!! and so many opinions, a little overwhelming. Sometimes I think it just might be easier to get a Maton and use it for playing plugged in. In the end I've decided for the K&K mini for my Furch based on all the positive reviews it has, also as it seems like the least invasive. I'll see how to improve the sound after...I haven't received it yet

How does this sound on a nylon string? I would think the mic would work but not the humbucker. I would use it for my classical and steel string parlor.

Which one has better acoustic sound, Fishman REMB or LR baggs M80?
If it is used in street performances, which one would you recommend?
Does Fishman REMB have feedback issues during performances?
REMB because it has the mic. If it does start to feedback you can always dial the mic all the way to minimum.
Is there any way to add an aftermarket, sound hole volume knob?
Not that I know of. You could use an external volume pedal.
Think this would work decently on a 12 string? Can’t seem to get anyone to commit to an answer on acoustic sound hole pickups for 12 string….thanks!
I would email Fishman directly and verify it with them.
Sounds ok! But a Fishman Prefix Pro, Plus, Blender, includes ALL of the needed controls. Phase, notch, contour, frequency, eq, etc. It's well worth the investment.

Yeah, they're kinda pricy, but if you hunt you can find one for half the new price. I have a 20 yr old Prefix on my 114ce-found for 50 bucks!
@@joelkevinstewart5594 I like the Fishman matrix and mic systems but a Soundhole pickup is for people that don’t like an undersaddle pickup in their guitar. It’s just a different approach. I personally prefer a system installed permanently in a guitar that I use regularly.

I haven’t tried it. I guess any pickup will make some noise if you hit it. I can’t say I’ve noticed it.
