This video was just a masterclass in filmmaking! These two are just so knowledgeable. They're just so meticulous and it makes you appreciate the show even more. I love how supportive they are of one another as Husband and Wife and creative partners. Lisa really did such a great job directing this episode and I hope she does more in the future.
nonon o it's just watched too much kubrik, also watched too much got and td, but being on hbo, there's really no surprise. same themes, also vikings, knightfall and alienist, and couterpart are all of the same subject, duality, which i've been a maestro of since decades ago, it's literally in my name

I’ve stated it many times, but episodes 4 and 8 are the best, episodes in terms of quality put in the history of series and by far. You don’t even see this level of details in every area (photography, music, actors, etc...) in 99% of movies.

Ninel R glad we share the same opinion :). Don’t you feel like the finale in terms of directing was quite I’d say, a bit confused no? I feel like they should have a done a two episodes one or something.
Exactly. I had a feel this episode had a great potential to contain more interesting details, but it did not because of the time constraint. Should be 2 episodes. For example, I was hoping that Clementine, while riding to the Valley, would dig into her memory and by the time she reached the Valley... surprise!.. Clementine would have her own agenda in mind. So it could be more interesting than just riding thru and being shot. And a few other things like that. Akecheta story could have some more development. Feel sorry for the guy who now, being awake, will have to spend the eternity with 20 other non-awake robots walking along the endless green fields and hills :) Maybe Teddy, who seemed to woke up just before shooting himself, would keep Akecheta company, and they will play chess in the evenings while bunch of robots will walk around searching for their loops :)
Couldn't agree more! 4 and 8 are some of the best moments in television history.
The part about the vocal performance and how they went to the lengths of taking each syllable of Jimmys and putting it into Ed Harris overtime...thats insane.
I'm surprised that they didn't have any commentary on the symbolic significance of the record, because to me it was by far the most crucial object in this episode. Both for its continuation of the circular motif and its looping/rotating action, but also for its explicit symbolism of the season's theme of fidelity. Records are copies, recordings, that attempt to capture a moment in time using sound and trap it within a physical medium, but can never be perfect renditions of reality, merely representations of it.

That water reflection / God and the Devil thing that Nolan mentioned connects to Logan’s last meeting w his father when he remembers how he has sunk all the way to the “bottom” of the pool, or of consciousness. Then he asks his father “do you wanna see what I see” which is the exact same thing Delos says to Elsie and Bernard. In his descent into insanity/truth Delos finally understands his son.

Let me splainmen this. I believe Tony’s intention was, “Notice how Jonathan didn’t act like the stereotypical man and talk over Lisa which allowed her to shine in a situation where a jerk would have interrupted her.”
I believe we need to look more at intent. It’s seems clear that Tony believes in promoting women. Let’s not attack people for saying the wrong thing with the right intention.

Oh man i love these two, cute couple and obviously they are great at their jobs. That episode was a fantastic directing debut for Lisa, the amount of thought she put on all of those details is mind-blowing. She deserves a Emmy nomination for this.
Still feels weird listening to Jonathan's American accent after listening to Christopher Nolan's strong British accent. These two grew up together and they have different accents!

“But don’t play with me, cause you’re playing with fire”. Probably the perfect song choice on a lot of different levels. Great episode, one of my favorites.

Having been someone who has has a mental break.... Thank you as producers for projecting this uncertain feeling so well. Having been there I immediately caught the feel of the episode. No one that hasn't been there can understand
This was excellent. I learnt so much, it's great to see just how much thought goes into each scene.
I love how after Jonathan’s Nolan’s extensive filming and movie career, he is still trying to learn how to use three cameras, still trying to learn.
Lisa Joy is a joy to watch. So much detail in one scene. So much knowledge of their craft. And they complement each other very well. 18:40 - So funny, so beautiful. And yes, Westworld for me, is the best TV show ever created. Writing, Directing, Acting, Visuals, Scenery and Wardrobe... Just perfect. I hope they give us as many seasons as they can.
William my boy..... Ed Harris breaking him down was spot on.
They remind me so much of SHIELD's writer/producers (Jed & Maurissa) in a sense that they're both amazing couples that produce great television experiences because of their genius in writing, directing, and overall storytelling. Their genius is often times underrated. Also I guess it's just coincidental that both guy's brothers are major film directors as well, and both women are just absolutely amazing at what they do.
God, I hope they do this with the season 2 finale.
She’s great at directing. I hope she gets more episodes next season.
This is the greatest episode of the season, it feels like a mini movie, it tells a story of its own while taking place in the major story of season 2 especially now that we think William is one of these special hosts.
Part of the reason this show is such a great show and a haven for creativity is because of these two. Love em.

You don’t need to go to film school. Sure it helps but i think it mostly has to do with being creative and having an intent in everything that is put on screen, wether it’s dialogue, cinematography, set design or other.
yeah she went to law school. honestly you just need to know philosophy, history, be smart and creative

This is a great series but man, this episode I ALWAYS come back to it. Can't believe this is Lisa Joy's directorial debut, it's my favourite episode fo the series and this video is PURE masterclass on directing, it may be Westworld - but there's nothing flashy about this episode. It's essentially two characters talking to each other in one room. Those kinds of scenes show what a director is really worth. AMAZINGGG

Love this!! The anatomy of a scene 101. This episode was so f'n epic. The Delos' story line, wow. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan are so f'n awesome. Love Westworld!!! Amazing, super smart and intelligent show. I also just love how Mr. Nolan is letting his better half have her moment. True gentleman.
I assumed that Kurt the goldfish in his bowl was meant to represent the room that Delos is living in... really, no place to hide or be truly private as the observers check on his fidelity.
This was my all time favorite episode in the Westworld series, really sums up the whole philosophical underpinning of the show, brilliantly acted and directed. This break down and seeing the amount of thought put into it is just incredible.

One of the only episodes this season that I really liked. Definitely glad that Lisa did direct it after all. Her approach is so thoughtful, and I loved hearing her describe her process here.

Third best episode of the season, right behind the final two.
I am really surprised this plot wasn't expanded more. I finally got what the whole Delos Program was working toward with this episode. More information about trying to duplicate thoughts, save a lifelong amount of data, build a lifelike robot to insert this data, it's all so fascinating. It makes you wonder- If you had a hard drive hooked into your brain, then that hard drive was installed into a robot body, would you continue to exist? Or would it be a digital copy of an analog soul?

in my opinion westworld is much better than game of thrones when it comes to directing. my only pet peeve with ww is how they play with the time. I mean it was okey in the first season but, i didnt like it that much in season 2, i hope they wont do that again for another plot twist in season 3. I mean there are better ways to create a plot twist imo.
