Amanda hart, YOU ROCK!!! Thank you for making this video. You exemplified how and why the scientific method works at getting to the facts. You made my day! = )
THANK YOU for a great how-to video. I'm wanting to clean three 100 year-old silk minister stoles of my grandfather. They're very fragile and have some stains. Also hand embroidery. I will now be trying the DAWN method. And I appreciate the comment to not fold or wring the fabric!
+Jeff Lebowski Thanks for watching. Based on my results, the final laundry detergent washing did improve almost all of the solvent stain remover's performances. However, my intention was to hand wash, as a last resort, only after routine dry cleaning was not removing the stubborn stains on my silk skirts.
I watched a silk cleaning video recently and she used dawn to pretreat but then added a little amount of hair conditioner to her wash machine...helps keep the fibers...silky!...
THAT was amazing! Thank you for taking so much time. I recently purchases a second hand Hermes Scarf that had more than a few “barely noticeable” stains as described. I’m going to try your method to see if I have any luck. It can’t be worse. Lol. I will report back with a before and after.
Oh my goodness! Thank you so very much Amanda! You've saved us a lot, I mean A LOT of work and showed what does work and what does not work on removing stains from silk clothing. Kathy from Arizona
Thanks for watching, Kathy. I am so glad it helped you. It took me a whole month to make this "documentary". I most recently used DAWN on my carpet stains and it worked fabulously. Hey?! If DAWN is that strong, maybe I shouldn't be eating off of my washed plates and possibly digesting it?
You should of re used butter or some other grease, which is many times something that won't come out. But you're brilliant with a scientific mind. I love it.
Thanks so much for this video! I have a black silk blouse that has oil stains on it from food oils. I plan to try some dish detergent (don't live in a country where Dawn is sold) on it tonight.
Thank you so much, Amanda for this controlled experiment. Great job! I'm not really surprised by Dawn because it seems to get so many stains out. I've been using it in a spray bottle with water & vinegar as my "Shout". That's all I use now. I'm worried about silk scarves that were very expensive because they are prints and could bleed. Any ideas? Blessings...
If you look closely, there is color loss in all swatches. These are the lighter rings she refers too as circles. Dawn is an excellent product for removing grease from washable colorfast fabrics since it is a water based product. Spot removal on a fabric swatch is a whole different ball game than cleaning an entire garment. This process would leave a ring and color loss on a garment.
FRED WILEY Hi, Fred. Thanks for watching. I did not attempt to do spot removal on my swatches, nor did I use grease as a stain. As shown (see 6:55) the swatches were totally submersed in the solvent for 15 minutes and then rinsed. My full garments soaked in Dawn for 15 minutes (see 24:35) rinsed, and were then washed in laundry detergent before air drying. Dawn actually removed the color rings/color loss, left by other solvents or stains, (see 25:42).
Amanda Hart Olive oil is grease or an oily stain. Most cooked food stains contain an oil component, I don't see how rubbing the silk fabric with Dawn and a tooth brush bristles did not cause damage . I do admire your diligence and video abilities,
FRED WILEY Hi Fred, thanks for your comments. Oh, I see...you mean grease, as in cooking oil. ok, yes, Dawn removed it. I did clean my entire garments (the 2 skirts) in the video. They both came out great. I used a soft bristle tooth brush and a plastic knife, so not to damage the silk fibers. Thanks, again.
The color difference is due to not having the control sample in the same orientation. The black threads should have flowed in the same direction. The light reflects differently. Excellent video.
The Sharpie would come out with 90-91% alcohol- The video showed a 70% solution I think. You could use the alcohol after the dawn to get the tumeric out first. Or you could skip the sharpies while you are eating turmeric ? Time to make some hard choices here..lol...just kiddin'
I have a Oscar de la renta silk, runway short sleeve shirt with grease on for year, even though I had tried to have a professional dry cleaning couple of times.
Diane Von Furstenberg’snthe best! I have a feeling the quality of silk she uses will be able to handle a gentle cycle, garment bag with some woollite. That’s how I launder my silk pillowcases... I’m about to hand wash a bunch of other silk stuff in the bathtub...wish me luck!!!
Great review! I have silk roman shades in my daughters room WE LOVE THE FABRIC so we would like to take them apart re-line them with new lining and put them back up. Can I Put them in cold hand wash cycle in wash machine???? than line dry??
+Chelsea Upholstery Thank you for watching. I did not wash my silk in the washing machine. I did it by hand, because I believe the "hand wash" cycle in the machine agitates more, than by hand. I would not line dry, but towel dry flat, so not to stretch or dent the fabric. Or, try your ideas and make a video?! Good luck with your project.
what about vinegar or just hot water???? once i washed my silk dress in cold water with soap, it was OK. does it also mean baking soda sucks for all silk?
Netty S Hi, Netty. Yes, in my experiment baking soda was terrible. Not only did it not remove the stains, it actually set the stains, making them impossible to remove with other solvents. Thanks for watching.
You spent a lot of time showing us club soda and bleach processes, but I did not see the process you used for the #1 results with Dawn. I do not feel that I could Dawn with any ease of mind because I don't know what you did with it and the steps you took. And please ditch the music. I want to hear you, and the music is unhelpful for those with hearing loss. Can you please do another video with just the Dawn?
The process for all 10 solvents was the same. 1) SCRAPE off solid with plastic knife 2) BRUSH in circular motion with solvent 3) SOAK in solvent for 15 minutes 4) RINSE with cold water 5) PRESS and blot on cotton towel 6) DRY laying flat 7) IRON
Your dedication and thoroughness is incredible

Wow that video had me as interested as a true crime story. Thank you!
Dawn is good for all purpose cleaning, it's great on oily stains. Never use laundry detergent on silk, the enzymes will destroy the fabric.
+Jeff Lebowski Thanks for watching. Based on my results, the final laundry detergent washing did improve almost all of the solvent stain remover's performances. Came to find a way to clean my tie without ruining it, stayed for the excellent use of scientific method! 👍🏽

Thank you!!!! I shared this video with my sewing FB group.
The use of a brush is to tap gentley on the stain (careful on delicate fabrics) as it penatrates the fabric weave to push the stain on through.
I’m about to dive in and give it a whirl! Thank you for taking the time to do this. 👍🙂
Thank you for your time, for constructing this video and this helpful information.
You should of re used butter or some other grease, which is many times something that won't come out. But you're brilliant with a scientific mind. I love it.
naanaa1111 Thanks for watching! Great idea. I will use butter on my next experiment. I'm guessing Dawn will have no trouble removing butter.
100 stars!!! I will go wash shirt with confidence now.
What an amazing result! Never think of that.
Great job. You would make a great researcher.
Mary Walton Thank you! I exhausted every test to make sure I would clean my silk the best way.
I agree. Great job. I am curious how Woolite delicates vs Dawn would fare now. Would the Woolite delicate preserve the color?
Thanks so much for this video! I have a black silk blouse that has oil stains on it from food oils. I plan to try some dish detergent (don't live in a country where Dawn is sold) on it tonight.
kaloingie123 Another thing to try if the stains are fresh is to put some baking powder on them because it will absorb the oil.

Excellent video.
You should have used 'Tide' in one of your samples. It is by far the best washing detergent out there
Very informative videos! I loved it!!!
Thanks for watching!
Impressive video!
skip to 21 min to see all results final #1 is Dawn
I use Dawn and cleaning vinegar on all of my silk from fitted sheets to camisoles. Thanks for your video.
Wonderful!
Pretty awesome. Thank you!

what a great experiment!
Donita Crudup Thank you! It worked on my silk.
Thank you for a very informative video
I need more vids like this.
I'm about to try this with a 100% Diane Von Furstemberg Dress.
+Cari Rangel Awesome! Please let me know if you have the same success I did. Thanks for watching.

very detailed video, thank you!
I don't live in the US and Dawn is not available in my country - just wondering if 'any other regular' washing up liquid would work the same?
What a great expariment ... its aws..
Cool.liked your video.really helpful.
Kiran Tellapelli Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.

Disappointed in Woolite... Not surprised though. How does Dryel dry clean at home do?
Why not try dawn with vinegar and water?
What was the ratio of dawn to water that you used?
Did I miss the dawn treatment?? Didn't see it
Diane Just spent 10 mins lQQking for it!! Lol

Thank you for this video it was very helpful! I do have one question. Did you use the Dawn undiluted when you first applied with the brush?
Great job and great help but can you pls abit speak faster and off the music?
There was no 'dawn' process shown!! Very disappointed.
The same exact process was followed for all 10 solvents.
cool
Netty S Thank you! Hope this helped.
Why is the intro like a horror film 😅
Wt a thing
The material you use, it is not silk
Yes, Dupioni silk.
what about lighting the swatches all on fire after a 5 minute soak in gasoline? that would work, no?
THANK YOU!!
